The progress in the understanding of cancer progression and early detection has been slow and frustrating due to the complex multifactorial nature and heterogeneity of the cancer syndrome. To date, no effective treatment is available for advanced cancers, which remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Clearly, there is urgent need to unravel novel biomarkers for early detection. Most of the functional information of the cancer-associated genes resides in the proteome. The later is an exceptionally complex biological system involving several proteins that function through posttranslational modifications and dynamic inter-molecular collisions with partners. These protein complexes can be regulated by signals emanating from cancer cells, their sur-rounding tissue microenvironment, and/or from the host. Some proteins are secreted and/or cleaved into the extracellular milieu and may represent valuable serum biomarkers for diagnosis purpose. It is estimated that the cancer proteome may include over 1.5 million proteins as a result of posttranslational processing and modifications. Such complexity clearly highlights the need for ultra.h.gh resolution proteomic technology for robust quantitative protein measurements and data acquisition. This review is to update the current research efforts in high-resolution proteomic technology for discovery and monitoring cancer biomarkers.

The use of sewage sludge on agricultural land provides an alternative for its disposal. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of using industrial sewage sludge produced in Pakistan, as an agricultural fertilizer. The agricultural soil amended with 250 g kg^-1 sewage sludge with or without lime treatment was used for the growth of the common local grain crop, maize （Zea maize）. The mobility of the trace and toxic metals in the sludge samples was assessed by applying a modified BCR sequential extraction procedure. The single extraction procedure was comprised of the application of a mild extractant （CaCl2） and water, for the estimation of the proportion of easily soluble metal fractions. To check the precision of the analytical results, the concentrations of trace and toxic metals in every step of the sequential extraction procedure were summed up and compared with total metal concentrations. The plant-available metal contents, as indicated by the deionized water and 0.01 mol L^-1 CaCl2 solution extraction fractions and the exchangeable fraction of the sequential extraction, decreased significantly （P 〈 0.05） with lime application because of the reduced metal availability at a.h.gher ph, except in the cases of Cd and Cu, whose mobility was slightly increased. Sludge amendment enhanced the dry weight yield of maize and the increase was more obvious for the soil with lime treatment. Liming the sewage sludge reduced the trace and toxic metal contents in the grain tissues, except Cu and Cd, which were below the permissible limits of these metals. The present experiment demonstrates that liming was an important factor in facilitating the growth of maize in sludge-amended soil.

Silica‐bonded N‐propylpiperazine sodium n‐propionate(SBPPSP) was found to act as an efficient solid base for the preparation of a series of 4h‐benzo[b]pyran derivatives. SBPPSP was used as a recyclable heterogeneous solid base catalyst for the synthesis of 3,4‐dihydropyrano[c]chromenes, 2‐amino‐4h‐pyrans, 1,4‐dihydropyrano[2,3‐c]pyrazoles, and 2‐amino‐4h‐benzo[e]‐chromenes via the condensation reaction of dimedone, ethyl acetoacetate, 3‐methyl‐1‐phenyl‐1h‐pyrazol‐5(4h)‐ one, and α‐na.h.hol, respectively, with aromatic aldehydes and malononitrile in refluxing aqueous ethanol. The heterogeneous solid base showed similar efficiency when reused in consecutive reactions.

Comparison of Different Extraction Approa.h.s for heavy Metal Partitioning in Sediment Samples

Three extraction methods, ultrasonic assisted extraction (USE), microwave assisted extraction (MSE), and conventional single extraction (CSE), in conjunction with the modified three-stage BCR sequential extraction procedure (SEP) were applied to examine the contents of Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn from lake sediment samples, to know whether these techniques can reduce extraction time and improve reproducibility. The SEP and developed alternative single extrac- tion methods were validated by the analysis of certified reference material BCR 601. By the use of optimized sonication and microwave conditions, steps 1, 2 and 3 of the BCR sequential extraction methods (excluding the hydrogen peroxide digestion in step 3, which was not performed with sonication and microwave) could be completed in 15-30 min and 60- 150 s, respectively. The recoveries of total extractable metal contents in BCR 601, obtained by three single extractions ranged from 93.3%-102%, 88.9%-104% and 81.2%-96.2% for CSE, USE and MSE, respectively. The precision of the single extraction methods was found in the range of 3.7%-9.4% for all metals (n = 6).

To the Editor：I read with great interest the article by Cao et al[1] re- porting a potential therapeutic utility of p38 inhibitors for acute pancreatitis. Using a preclinical mouse model where acute pancreatitis was induced by administra- tion of cerulein （a cholecystokinin analog derived from the tree frog Litoria caerulea）, the authors reported that the p38 MAPK inhibitor SB203580, administered intra- peritoneally before and after the first administration of cerulein, relieved signs associated with acute pancreatitis, including decreased hSP60 and hSP70 expression, and serum IL-6, amylase and lipase activities. Although the study remains descriptive and pharmacodynamic aspects were not examined in depth, it still has a merit as it undoubtedly provides a basis for further investigation into the potential utility of targeting p38 signaling for acute pancreatitis, a common serious condition that can be life-threatening.

AIM: To assess h pylori seroprevalence in lung cancer and determine whether there is a potential association between lung cancer and h pylori infection. METhODS: The study was conducted on forty consecutive patients with lung cancer, confirmed by pa.h.logy (32 men, 8 women; mean age 55.50 ± 11.91 years, range 16-77 years). Forty healthy subjects (25 men, 15 women; mean age 43.08 ± 12.60 years, range 20-79 years) from the patients’ family members were matched to ea.h.case subject on the basis of age and socioeconomic status. h pylori infection was detected with a commercially available immunoglobulin G (IgG) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Trinity kit, Biotech co., USA), previously validated in adults (86% sensitivity, 96% specificity) against a gold standard of culture and histology. RESULTS: h pylori seropositivity was present in 52.5% of patients with lung cancer in comparison to 45.0% of healthy control subjects. Although h pylori seropositivity was more frequent in lung cancer patients than in controls, the difference did not rea.h.statistical significance (OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 0.56-3.25; P = 0.65). In addition, there was no significant difference between cases and controls in terms of gastrointestinal symptoms. CONCLUSION: The earlier described association between h pylori infection and lung cancer was not supported in this study. Further studies with larger sample sizes should be undertaken to assess the frequency of h pylori infection in patients with lung cancer and their potential association.

Dolomitization Mechanism Based on Petrogra.h. and Geochemistry in the Shotori Formation (Middle Triassic), Central Iran

Middle Triassic carbonate sequences of Shotori Formation have a thickness of 70 m and are deposited Robat-e-Kalmard region of Tabas city in Central Iran basin. Gradationally and conformably overlying Sorkh shale Formation, Shotori Formation, mostly composed of medium to thick dolomites (50 m), interbeded with thin lime and sandstones, is disconformable by a laterite horizon at its upper boundary. This Formation mainly consists of fine-to-coarsely crystalline dolomites. According to petrogra.h.c (fabric and grain size) and geochemical (elemental analysis of Ca, Mg, Na, Sr, Fe, Mn) evidence, five various types of dolomites were recognized in Shotori Formation. This variety results from early and late diagenetic processes, triggering a change in dolomitizing fluids and thereby forming various dolomites. Geochemical studies have revealed that the dolomites of Shotori Formation have formed under meteoric diagenesis and reducing conditions. Various dolomitization mechanisms are proposed for various types of dolomites;that is to say, Sabkha model is considered for type 1 dolomite, mixing zone model for type 2 and 3 dolomites and burial model for type 4 and 5 dolomites.
