Essential oils of Origanum compactum increase membrane permeability,disturb cell membrane integrity,and suppress quorum-sensing phenotype in bacteria

The aim of this study was to investigate antibacterial activity of Origanum compactum essential oils collected at three phenological stages on Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. The antibacterial activity was evaluated using the agar-well diffusion assay. The MIC and MBC values were determined using the micro-dilution assay. The investigation of the antibacterial action was carried out by the evaluation of the effect of O. compactum essential oils on the antibacterial kinetic growth, the integrity of cell membrane and permeability of the cell membrane. The anti-quorum sensing activity was tested by the inhibition of the biofilm formation. The findings of this study showed that O. compactum essential oil has potent antibacterial activities against E. coli and B. subtilis. The lowest inhibition value against B. subtilis was obtained with O. compactum essential oil at the post-flowering stage (MIC=MBC=0.0312%(v/v)). The antibacterial mechanisms of O. compactum essential oils are related to the disturbing of the cell membrane integrity and the increasing of the membrane permeability, which leads to the leakage of genetic materials (DNA and RNA). Moreover, O. compactum essential oils inhibited the formation of the biofilms, a phenotype that has been known to be quorum sensing regulated.

Chemical composition of Mentha suaveolens and Pinus halepensis essential oils and their antibacterial and antioxidant activities

Objective: To determin the chemical compounds of Mentha suaveolens(M. suaveolens) and Pinus halepensis(P. halepensis) essential oils(Eos) and evaluate their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Methods: The chemical composition of P. halepensis and M. suaveolens EOs was determined by GC-MS analysis. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH,ABTS and FRAP assays. The antibacterial effect was tested against 6 bacterial strains using the well diffusion method and micro-dilution assay. Results: The major components of P. halepensis EOs were β-caryophyllene(28.04%),myrcene(23.81%) and α-pinene(12.02%). However,piperitenone oxid(56.28%),piperitenone(11.64%) and pulegone(6.16%) were the major components of M. suaveolens EOs. M. suaveolens EOs showed remarkable antioxidant activities compared with P. halepensis EOs,showing antioxidant capacity values of IC50=(64.76±2.24) μg/mL,IC50=(82.73±3.34) μg/mL,and IC50=(93.35±4.45) μg/mL,revealed by DPPH,ABTS and FRAP assays,respectively. However,P. halepensis EOs showed interesting antibacterial effects against all bacterial strains. The most sensible strains to P. halepensis EOs were Staphylococcus aureus [(34.00±0.50) mm],Listeria monocytogenes [(31.00±1.50)] mm and Proteus mirabilis [(29.00±2.25)mm]. Furthermore,the lowest minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration(MBC) values were revealed by P. halepensis EOs against Staphylococcus aureus [MIC=MBC=0.125%(v/v)] and Listeria monocytogenes [MIC=MBC=0.25%(v/v)]. Conclusions: P. halepensis and M. suaveolens EOs contain bioactive compounds that could have potential applications against bacterial infections and oxidative stress related diseases as well as for food conservation. However,further investigations are necessary to isolate and investigate the action mechanisms of these bioactive compounds.

Traditional treatment of infectious diseases is based on compounds that aim to kill or inhibit bacterial growth. The bacterial resistance against antibiotics is a serious issue for public health. Today, new therapeutic targets other than the bacterial wall were deciphered. Quorum sensing or bacterial pheromones are molecules called auto-inducer secreted by bacteria to regulate some functions such as antibiotic resistance and biofilms formation. This therapeutic target is well-studied worldwide, nevertheless the scientific data are not updated and only recent researches started to look into its potential as a target to fight against infectious diseases. A major concern with this approach is the frequently observed development of resistance to antimicrobial compounds. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a current overview of the quorum sensing system in bacteria by revealing their implication in biofilms formation and the development of antibiotic resistance, and an update on their importance as a potential target for natural substances.

Antioxidant Activity and Total Phenolics Content of Montpellier Cistus (Cistus monspeliensis) Extracts

To determine the antioxidant activity of the water (WE), methanol (ME), ethanol (EE) and ethyl acetate extracts (EAE) from the leaves of Cistus monspeliensis, several methods such as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging assay, 2,2’-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical cation decolorization assay, reducing power assay, metal chelating assay, Thiobarbituric acid test (TBARS) and β-carotene linoleic acid system assay were investigated. Because of the important roles of total phenolics and total flavonoids as antioxidants, the amounts of total phenolics and total flavonoids in the extracts were also determined. The WE and ME showed a higher scavenging activity on the DPPH and ABTS radical. Both extracts also exhibited a strong chelating effect on Fe2+ and performed the best in the reducing power assay. On the other hand, the WE and ME were found to have the higher total phenolic contents (23.13 and 23.25 mg GAE/g of extract respectively) and total flavonoid contents (55.08 and 47.77 mg rutin/g of extract respectively). Thus, both extracts are promising alternatives to synthetic substances as food ingredients with antioxidant activity. The ME and the WE showed the similar levels in phenolic content.

In Li and Luo(2007 ***.A 76032327),the inequality(1/2)T≥Q was identified as a fundamental postulate for a consistent theory of quantum versus classical correlations for arbitrary measures of total T and quantum Q correlations in bipartite quantum ***,Hayden et al(2006 ***.26595)have conjectured that,in some conditions within systems endowed with infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces,quantum correlations may dominate not only half of total correlations but total correlations ***,in a two-mode Gaussian state,quantifying T and Q respectively by the quantum mutual information I~G and the entanglement of formation(EoF)ε_(F)^(G),we verify thatε_(F)^(G),is always less than(1/2)I_(R)^(G( when I~G andε_(F)^(G) are defined via the Rényi-2 *** via the von Neumann entropy,ε_(F,V)^(G),may even dominate I_(V)^(G) itself,which partly consolidates the Hayden conjecture,and partly,provides strong evidence hinting that the origin of this counterintuitive behavior should intrinsically be related to the von Neumann entropy by which the EoFε_(F,V)^(G),is defined,rather than related to the conceptual definition of the EoFε_(F).The obtained results show that—in the special case of mixed two-mode Gaussian states—quantum entanglement can be faithfully quantified by the Gaussian Rényi-2 EoFε_(F,R)^(G),.

Factors affecting farmers'choice to adopt risk management strategies:The application of multivariate and multinomial probit models

This study investigates the factors that impact farmers'adoption of risk management strategies(RMS)in Pakistan during times of *** study examines farmers'adoption of RMS using both multinomial probit(MNP)and multivariate probit(MVP).Data were collected from 382 farmers sampled from four districts in KhyberPakhtunkhwa(KP)province of Pakistan via a multistage sampling *** study utilizes the MNP model,considering the assumption of Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives(IIA)and incorporating correlated error *** objective is to understand farmers'behavior in risky situations and determine if there is *** are compared with the MVP model to assess robustness and gain deeper understanding of farmers'decisionmaking *** research findings reveal that our results are robust,and farmers behave homogeneously in various RMS *** adopt RMS individually or in combination to mitigate the adverse effects of natural calamities on their *** risk-averse farmers,who perceive weather-related risks as a threat,access credits and information,and have farms close to a river are more likely to adopt RMS,irrespective of the format of the strategies ***,the predicted probabilities and correlation of the RMS and RM categories have strengthened our model *** findings provide insights into the behavior of farmers in adopting RMS which are helpful for policymakers and stakeholders in developing strategies to mitigate the impacts of natural calamities on farmers.

Learning a Deep Predictive Coding Network for a Semi-Supervised 3D-Hand Pose Estimation

In this paper we present a CNN based approach for a real time 3 D-hand pose estimation from the depth *** discriminative approaches have achieved remarkable success but are facing two main challenges:Firstly,the methods are fully supervised hence require large numbers of annotated training data to extract the dynamic information from a hand ***,unreliable hand detectors based on strong assumptions or a weak detector which often fail in several situations like complex environment and multiple *** contrast to these methods,this paper presents an approach that can be considered as semi-supervised by performing predictive coding of image sequences of hand poses in order to capture latent features underlying a given image without *** hand is modelled using a novel latent tree dependency model(LDTM)which transforms internal joint location to an explicit *** the modeled hand topology is integrated with the pose estimator using data dependent method to jointly learn latent variables of the posterior pose appearance and the pose configuration ***,an unsupervised error term which is a part of the recurrent architecture ensures smooth estimations of the final *** on three challenging public datasets,ICVL,MSRA,and NYU demonstrate the significant performance of the proposed method which is comparable or better than state-of-the-art approaches.

A Generalized Accelerated Failure Time Model to Predict Restoration Time from Power Outages

Major disasters such as wildfire, tornado, hurricane, tropical storm, and flooding cause disruptions in infrastructure systems such as power and water supply, wastewater management, telecommunication, and transportation facilities. Disruptions in electricity infrastructure have negative impacts on sectors throughout a region, including education, medical services,financial services, and recreation. In this study, we introduced a novel approach to investigate the factors that can be associated with longer restoration time of power service after a hurricane. Considering restoration time as the dependent variable and using a comprehensive set of county-level data, we estimated a generalized accelerated failure time(GAFT) model that accounts for spatial dependence among observations for time to event data. The model fit improved by 12% after considering the effects of spatial correlation in time to event data. Using the GAFT model and Hurricane Irma's impact on Florida as a case study, we examined:(1) differences in electric power outages and restoration rates among different types of power companies—investor-owned power companies, rural and municipal cooperatives;(2) the relationship between the duration of power outage and power system variables;and(3) the relationship between the duration of power outage and socioeconomic attributes. The findings of this study indicate that counties with a higher percentage of customers served by investor-owned electric companies and lower median household income faced power outage for a longer time. This study identified the key factors to predict restoration time of hurricane-induced power outages, allowing disaster management agencies to adopt strategies required for restoration process.
