Quality and Crop Yield Potential of Moderately Degraded Alfisols Under Different Nutrient Inputs and Cropping Patterns

Crop performance on degraded soil needs special management practices to overcome soil quality limitations. In a 2-year(from summer 2006 to winter 2007–2008) field trial on a moderately degraded Alfisol in Swabi District(34°7′12′′N, 72°28′20′′E), Pakistan,the effects of three cropping patterns, cereal-cereal(CC), cereal-legume(CL), and cereal-cereal and legume intercrop(CLI), were tested in main plots under four fertilization treatments in sub-plots, including no fertilization(control), farmers' practice(FP, 60:45 kg ha^(-1) N:P_2O_5), recommended dose(RD, 120:90:60 kg ha^(-1) N:P_2O_5:K_2O), and integrated nutrient management(INM, 20 t ha^(-1) farmyard manure integrated with 50% N, 100% P, and K of recommended dose), using a split-plot randomized complete block design. The performance of CL was superior than CC in plant height, leaf area index(LAI), cob length, grain yield, biological yield, and grain protein(8%, 26%, 8%, 5%, 10%, and 8% increases, respectively), while CLI confirmed significant improvement only in LAI(25%) over CC. Response to nutrient inputs from all sources was in the order of INM > RD > FP > control, and the maximum net economic return by INM(23% and 2.5 times higher than RD and FP, respectively) indicated severe deficiency of both macro-and micro-nutrients in the soil as well as degraded physical properties. Increases in soil organic matter, total N, total mineral N, available P and K, total porosity, and available water-holding capacity by 6%, 34%, 24%, 50%, 13%, 5%, and 7%, respectively, and decrease in soil bulk density by 4% after four crop seasons indicated optimistic changes in soil quality as a result of the combined effects of fertilization from organic and inorganic sources and legumes within crop rotation. Successful immunological treatment of gallbladder cancer in India―Case report

Gallbladder cancer has a poor outcome because of its anatomy and location. Often, the diagnosis is made very late due to its silent course. Post-operated cases do respond to chemotherapy but the survival is counted in months and the quality of life is further hampered due to toxicity of drugs. Immunotherapy holds good promise in non-responding cancers treated by conventional chemotherapeutic agents. Among various therapies, dendritic cell therapy is growing at rapid pace due to its acceptable rationale. It has been utilized in treating successfully resected stage Ill （T2, N1, M0） gallbladder cancer in one of our patients. A 48 years old lady treated with this therapy is free of metastasis with ten doses of autologous dendritic cell vaccine constructed by utilizing resected tumor lysate antigen. She has received ten doses of therapy in 14 months of her treatment. This therapy has proven to be safe and without apparent side effects. The positive clinical response obtained supports that autologous dendritic cell-based immunotherapy is a promising therapeutic approach for refractory gallbladder cancers.

Malignant gliomas are the most devastating tumors in clinical practice and nave poorest survival, Immunological treatment of such patients may likely increase the survival and quality of life. Dendritic cells （DCs）, most potent antigen presenting cells in combination with oral chemotherapeutic agents may be tried for patients giving consent to such treatment. We have successfully combined the two therapies in an adult male patient who was on downhill course after being operated on once with post operation chemotherapy and radiotherapy for glioma in the left parietal area. He received five dendritic cell therapy vaccines in combination with oral chemotherapy and responded dramatically having near normal quality of life for an additional five months with this regime, increasing the survival after operation to 11 months. This therapy is continuing with radiological betterment of the lesion. The DCs are matured with antigen extracted from wax embedded tissue at 6th day of culture. We feel that the treatment can be given to more number of patients to establish its efficacy for the dreaded cancer glioblastoma multiforme.

Market-oriented housing reforms and the rapid urbanization process have led to spectacular growth in the Chinese real estate sector(RES).However,the changes in the role played by this sector in the structural dynamics of the Chinese economy have not been examined ***,we analyze the intersectoral structural changes to the Chinese RES,its linkages with the rest of the economy,and its growth sources,using four Chinese input-output tables from 2002 to *** depart from existing work on the RES by using the causative matrix approach and structural decomposition analysis,and obtain three main ***,the RES,which received little non-RES feedback during the 2002-2007period,has subsequently received much more substantial ***,the impact of the RES on China s economic growth stems mainly from its forward ***,the growth in the RES has been driven mainly by domestic demand *** results highlight that the Chinese RES,which plays a key role in value chains,is highly dependent on its own final demand and a fall in its demand would impede economic *** important implication of these results is that developing the national economy by stimulating the RES would not be as effective as developing the RES through stimulating the national economy.

针对财政压力下刺激消费的资金来源问题,本文根据转移支付的拉弗曲线,认为政府可以将部分财政收入以消费券的形式补贴居民消费,通过合理设计消费券的杠杆,确定消费券中政府补贴和居民支付的合理比例,能够使得新增税收完全弥补政府先前的转移支付,从而既刺激了消费,又保证了财政收入。本文通过对这一假说的阐述,构建了消费券最低杠杆的估算模型,并基于中国投入产出数据,测算了消费券中应设置的最低杠杆。研究发现,当消费券中政府补贴和居民支付的平均比例为1:5.54时,政府转移支付的资金既能促进消费,又能使得新增税收完全弥补政府先前的转移支付,从而在财政压力下解决了刺激消费的资金来源问题。

Cardiovascular magnetic resonance(CMR) imaging uniquely characterizes myocardial and microvascular injury in acute myocardial infarction(AMI), providing powerful surrogate markers of outcomes. The last 10 years have seen an exponential increase in AMI studies utilizing CMR based endpoints. This article provides a contemporary, comprehensive review of the powerful role of CMR imaging in the assessment of outcomes in AMI. The theory, assessment techniques, chronology, importance in predicting left ventricular function and remodelling, and prognostic value of each CMR surrogate marker is described in detail. Major studies illustrating the importance of the markers are summarized, providing an up to date review of the literature base in CMR imaging in AMI.
