Bimrocks are characterized by their geotechnically significant blocky structure,presenting complex shear *** study investigates the shear behavior and dilatancy of bimrocks featuring a rock-like matrix,such as *** study addresses a gap in current research,which has predominantly examined the shear behavior of soil-matrix bimrocks(bimsoils).Laboratory direct shear tests were performed on idealized models with varying volumetric block proportions(VBPs).The results highlight that blocks exert both positive and negative effects on shear strength,dilation,and block breakage factor(BF),depending on *** indicate 40%and 60%as critical VBPs,revealing distinct shear strength trends within this range,contrary to the dominant downward *** positively impact dilation and BF between 20%and 50%VBP,while negatively affecting them beyond this *** skeleton inherently promotes stable dilatancy under normal stress increments and intensifies stress dependency of shear *** in dilation angle concerning normal stress and VBP suggest the potential for characterizing this factor using equivalent strength and roughness,akin to rockfill *** assessments of equivalent strength revealed positive effects of blocks when VBP was between 30%and 70%.Lastly,the findings indicate that blocks notably impact pre-and post-peak behaviors by reducing shear stiffness and inducing local hardening *** study also discusses the similarities and distinctions in the function of blocks within soil-like and rock-like *** offers new insights into the exact role of blocks in bimrock shear behavior beyond the traditional interpretation through the variation of friction and cohesion.

A new analytical solution for calculation the displacement and shear stress of fully grouted rock bolts and numerical verifications

In presence of difficult conditions in coal mining roadways, an adequate stabilization of the excavation boundary is required to ensure a safe progress of the construction. The stabilization of the roadways can be improved by fully grouted rock bolt, offering properties optimal to the purpose and versatility in use. Investigations of load transfer between the bolt and grout indicate that the bolt profile shape and spacing play an important role in improving the shear strength between the bolt and the surrounding strata. This study proposes a new analytical solution for calculation displacement and shear stress in a fully encapsulated rock bolt in jointed rocks. The main characteristics of the analytical solution consider the bolt profile and jump plane under pull test conditions. The performance of the proposed analytical solution, for three types of different bolt profile configurations, is validated by ANSYS software. The results show there is a good agreement between analytical and numerical methods. Studies indicate that the rate of displacement and shear stress from the bolt to the rock exponentially decayed. This exponential reduction in displacement and shear stress are dependent on the bolt characteristics such as: rib height, rib spacing, rib width and grout thickness, material and joint properties.

An exact algorithmic method based on trigonometrical relations to predict the rock quality designation

In core logging, each joint set intersects borehole into some segments. In this research, it has been shown that length of the borehole segments created by each joint set could be computed by trigonometrical relations. By realizing the lengths associated with joint sets, an algorithm has been designed to compute the length of borehole pieces (created by all joint sets) and to calculate RQD. Effect of some factors have been analyzed and applied to the abstract model of the rock mass to have the most similarity to a real rock mass. The program proposed in this study, is a robust platform to calculate the RQD in all directions inside a rock mass without having to deal with the labor of core logging and wrestling with difficulties and inaccuracies of the traditional processes. This is the first algorithmic method for estimating the rock quality which could be employed to develop a new and far more reliable measurement for the degree of jointing inside a rock mass.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of bolt profile configuration in load transfer capacity between the bolt and ***,five types of rock bolts are used with different *** rock bolts are modeled by ANSYS *** show that profile rock bolt T_3 and T_ with load capacity 180 and 195 kN in the jointed rocks,are the optimum ***,the performances of the selected profiles are examined in Tabas Coal Mine by FLAC *** is good subscription between the results of numerical modeling and instrumentation reading such as tells tale,sonic extensometer and strain gauge rock *** to the finding of this study,the proposed pattern of rock bolts,on 7 + 6 patterns per meter with 2 flexi bolt(4 m) for support gate road.

Analysis profile of the fully grouted rock bolt in jointed rock using analytical and numerical methods

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of bolt profile on load transfer mechanism of fully grouted bolts in jointed rocks using analytical and numerical methods. Based on the analytical method with development of methods, a new model is presented. To validate the analytical model, five different profiles modeled by ANSYS software. The profile of rock bolts T3 and T4with load transfer capacity,respectively 180 and 195 kN in the jointed rocks was selected as the optimum profiles. Finally, the selected profiles were examined in Tabas Coal Mine. FLAC analysis indicates that patterns 6+7 with2 NO flexi bolt 4 m better than other patterns within the faulted zone.

Prediction of face advance rate and determination of the operation efficiency in retreat longwall mining panel using rock engineering system

A new approach for prediction of face advance rete (FAR) prior to mining operation and determination of the operation efficiency after mining operation in retreat longwall mining panel is presented based upon the concepts of rock engineering system (RES). For this purpose, six longwall panels considered in Parvadeh-I coal mine. Seven major effective parameters on FAR was selected including coal mine roof rating, gas propagation, safety factor of longwall face, ratio of joint spacing to cutting depth at longwall face, longwall face inclination, panel width, floor rock mass rating. To performance evaluation of the presented model, the relationship between the average vulnerability indexes of advance operation with FAR was determined in considered panels with coefficient of determination (R2) equal to 0.884 that indicate relatively acceptable correlation and compatibility. Investigations of the research indicated that it is possible to determine the actual operation efficiency under fair conditions by a RES-based model. The inevitable reduction of FAR for each longwall panel was determined by presented model that the difference amount between the maximum possible practical face advance rate (FARmpp) and recorded actual face advance rate (FARa) indicate the operation efficiency. Applied approach in this paper can be used to prediction of FAR in retreat longwall mining panel for same conditions that can have many benefits, including better and more accurate planning for the sales market and mine operation. Also, presented method in this paper can be applied as a useful tool to determination of actual operation efficiency for other sections and extraction methods in coal mines.

Optimization of Fairhurst-Cook Model for 2-D Wing Cracks Using Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), Particle Swarm Intelligence (PSO), and Genetic Algorithm (GA)

The common failure mechanism for brittle rocks is known to be axial splitting which happens parallel to the direction of maximum compression. One of the mechanisms proposed for modelling of axial splitting is the sliding crack or so called, “wing crack” model. Fairhurst-Cook model explains this specific type of failure which starts by a pre-crack and finally breaks the rock by propagating 2-D cracks under uniaxial compression. In this paper, optimization of this model has been considered and the process has been done by a complete sensitivity analysis on the main parameters of the model and excluding the trends of their changes and also their limits and “peak points”. Later on this paper, three artificial intelligence algorithms including Particle Swarm Intelligence (PSO), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) and genetic algorithm (GA) has been used and compared in order to achieve optimized sets of parameters resulting in near-maximum or near-minimum amounts of wedging forces creating a wing crack.
