The objective of this study is to investigate the potential causes of widespread Larix sibirica *** observed in the Khentii massif of northern *** ratio of deadwood to living trees in affected stands in the Goricho region,the southernmost study site situated close to the Gobi Desert,was as high as 3.6:*** fluctuations monitored over 2 years using electrical impedance spectrometry revealed that the Goricho study site had higher soil moisture levels than the two less affected sites Barun Bayan and Dzun *** soil moisture was recorded in an area characterized by highly skeletal soils,ones with more than 35%by volume of rock fragments,and comparatively shallow soil horizons,from valley to *** layer of permafrost influencing hydrogeological processes is much deeper in the Goricho region compared to the undisturbed study *** analysis confirmed a significant number of dead *** on sites with developed *** forest stands,however damaged,grow in this region on well-drained scree slopes or on rocky *** mass mortality observed for *** may be directly linked to accelerated permafrost thaw in the area bordered by the Tuul and the Terelj *** assumption is that *** root system necrosis occurred as a result of long-term waterlogging of developed soils with high spatial heterogeneity,normally able to absorb high quantities of *** areas unaffected were scree fields and rocky bastions characterized by adequate *** of our findings support the primary stages of large-scale permafrost thaw,i.e.,correlating increases in soil moisture with increasing permafrost active layer thickness.

BACKGROUND： The differential diagnosis of many neurodegenerative disorders depends primarily on clinical symptoms together with imaging methods. Recently, increased importance has been placed on the use of biomarkers for diagnosing various neurodegenerative disorders. OBJECTIVE： To assess the feasibility of tau-protein, phosphorylated tau-protein, beta-amyloid 42 （Aβ42）, and 14-3-3 protein as biomarkers for diagnosing several neurodegenerative diseases complicated by cognitive deficits. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A non-randomized, concurrent, case-control investigation was performed in three medical centers in the Czech Republic （Department of Neurology at the University Hospital in Hradec Kralove, Department of Neurology at the 2rd Medical Faculty, and the University Hospital Motol） between October 2000 and November 2006. PARTICIPANTS： Eighteen patients with probable AIzheimer＇s disease, 4 patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, 10 patients with frontotemporal dementia, 9 patients with clinically isolated syndrome suggestive of multiple sclerosis, and 7 patients with multiple sclerosis, as well as 38 race-, nationality-, and age-matched cognitively intact controls, were included in the study. Diagnoses were established based on the following criteria： the criteria for Alzheimer＇s disease proposed by the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke/Alzheimer＇s Disease and Related Disorders Association, WHO criteria for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Neary criteria for frontotemporal dementia, and McDonald＇s criteria for multiple sclerosis. All included patients were confirmed to suffer from various degrees of dementia. METHODS： Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure concentrations of tau-protein, phosphorylated tau-protein, and Aβ42 in cerebrospinal fluid （CSF） samples collected by standard lumbar puncture from each patient. In this paper standard techniques for characterization of HgCdTe liquid phase epitaxial layers (LPE) were presented. The performance of long wavelength p on n HgCdTe photodiodes fabricated by arsenic diffusion was described. The correlation between LPE HgCdTe material parameters and properties of the infrared photodiodes was demonstrated.

A novel metal matrix composites(MMC)with Mg matrix reinforced with natural filler in the form of Didymosphenia geminata frustules(algae with distinctive siliceous shells)are presented in this *** plasma sintering(PPS)was used to manufacture Mg-based composites with 1,5 and 10 vol.%ceramic *** a reference,pure Mg was *** results show that the addition of 1 vol.%Didymosphenia geminata frustules to the Mg matrix increases its corrosion resistance by supporting passivation reactions,and do not affect the morphology of L929 *** of 5 vol.%the filler does not cause cytotoxic effects,but it supports microgalvanic reactions leading to the greater corrosion *** content than 5 vol.%the filler causes significant microgalvanic corrosion,as well as increases cytotoxicity due to the greater micro-galvanic effect of the composites containing 10 and 15 vol.%*** results of contact angle measurements show the hydrophilic character of the investigated materials,with slightly increase in numerical values with addition of amount of ceramic *** addition of Didymosphenia geminata frustules causes changes in a thermo-elastic properties such as mean apparent value of coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE)and thermal conductivity(λ).The addition of siliceous reinforcement resulted in a linear decrease of CTE and reduction in thermal conductivity over the entire temperature *** the increasing addition of Didymosphenia geminata frustules,an increase in strength with a decrease in compressive strain is *** all composites an increase in microhardness was *** results clearly indicate that filler in the form of Didymosphenia geminata frustules may significantly change the most important properties of pure Mg,indicating its wide potential in the application of Mg-based composites with a special focus on biomedical use.

Acute appendicitis in a patient after a uterus transplant: A case report

BACKGROUND Acute appendicitis in a solid organ transplant recipient is a rare occurrence, and experience remains limited. Appendicitis in uterine transplant recipients has never been reported. Immunocompromised patients with acute abdomen often present late and with attenuated symptoms. The differential diagnosis in a transplanted patient is broad and challenging due to possible existing complications associated with the graft, effects of immunosuppression, and altered anatomical *** SUMMARY A 26-year-old woman suffering from absolute uterine factor infertility received a uterus transplant. In the post-transplant period, she suffered from leukopenia and recurrent acute cellular rejection. Her compliance was suboptimal. She travelled to an exotic destination despite the physician's recommendation not to do so. Following her vacation, she presented with abdominal discomfort, nausea and diarrhoea. There was no sign of acute abdomen;the abdominal ultrasound was negative on day 0. Clostridium difficile colitis was verified and treated with perorally administered vancomycin. On day 4, the discomfort changed to pain;the ultrasound scan revealed a finding suggestive of appendicitis. Surgical exploration revealed perforated appendicitis, and appendectomy was *** a surgical point of view, the patient's follow-up was uneventful. The patient underwent a successful embryo transfer 6 months after the appendectomy. The patient gave birth to a healthy boy at the 35 th week of *** A high index of suspicion of an atypical course and symptomatology of acute abdomen should be maintained in immunosuppressed patients.

Electric Buses in Urban Transport, The Situation and Development Trends

A study called ＂E-mobilita v MHD＂（e-mobility in urban mass transit） has been conducted by the author＇s private consultancy to inform Czech public transport operators about the technologies and operational experience to date and stimulate the e-bus utilization as well as their involvement in e-bus research and development projects. The study covers trolley-buses, diesel hybrids and e-buses including fuel cell buses. These electric urban buses have been compared with combustion engine vehicles represented by diesel and CNG （compressed natural gas） buses, in terms of energy consumption and cost, greenhouse gas emissions, noise and life cycle cost. Relations between urban transport e-mobility and the ＂smart grid＂ concept have been presented as well. Comprehensive reports prepared on the European Union and the USA levels have been the basis for the study, completed by information from the field research, focused especially on the bus operational reliability and other parameters important for a transport operator and covering, interalia, 12 case studies. The results show electric buses as a promising urban transport mode with massive technology development overcoming their operational limitations. Synergies between electric buses and other urban systems, such as power supply, are notable as well.

Biochar surface functional groups as affected by biomass feedstock, biochar composition and pyrolysis temperature

By testing 92 different biochars,this study had the objective to determine the relations between simple physico-chemical characteristics of biochar(elemental composition,ash fraction,specific surface area,process parameters)and infrared sorption characteristics revealing the presence of specific functional *** results of Diffusive Reflection Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy were statistically analyzed with multiple linear regression techniques and Principal Component Analysis(PCA)with the biochar characterization parameters as model *** dominant parameters affecting the functional group signals were the pyrolysis temperature,the H/C-ratio and specific surface area of the biochar and the ash *** models were able to explain 60-90%of data variance for specific peaks in the *** application of PCA could further reduce the input parameters to three main factors explaining 70.8%of total data *** of the first two main factors showed the similarity of infrared spectra of biochars produced at 300 and 450℃,whereas a pyrolysis temperature of 600℃ lead to a partial and a 750℃ to a nearly complete loss of biochar surface functional groups.

Cerium dioxide as a new reactive sorbent for fast degradation of parathion methyl and some other organophosphates

Cerium dioxide was used for the first time as reactive sorbent for the degradation of the organophosphate pesticides para-thion methyl, chlorpyrifos, dichlofenthion, fenchlorphos, and prothiofos, as well as of some chemical warfare agents-nerve gases soman and O-ethyl S-[2-（diisopropylamino） ethyl] methylphosphonothioate （VX）. CeO2 specimens were prepared by calcination of basic cerous carbonate obtained by precipitation from an aqueous solution. The CeO2 samples containing certain amounts （1 wt.%-5 wt.%） of the neighboring lanthanides （La, Pr, Nd） were prepared in a similar way from pure lanthanide salts. It was shown that ceria accelerated markedly the decomposition of parathion methyl causing the cleavage of the P-O-aryl bond in the pesticide molecule. A similar reaction mechanism was proposed for the degradation of other organophosphate pesticides and nerve agents. The degradation times （reaction half-times） were in an order of minutes in the presence of CeO2, compared to hours or days under common environ-mental conditions. The reaction in suitable organic solvents allowed conversions of about 90%for parathion methyl loading of 20 mg pesticide/g CeO2 within 2 h with a reactant half-life in the order of 0.1 min. The key parameter governing the degradation efficiency of CeO2 was the temperature during calcination. At optimum calcination temperature （about 773.15 K）, the produced ceria retained a sufficiently high surface area, and attained an optimum degree of crystallinity （related to a number of crystal defects, and thus poten-tial reactive sites）. The presence of other lanthanides somewhat decreased the reaction rate, but this effect was not detrimental and permitted the possible use of chemically impure ceria as a reactive sorbent. A fast organophosphate degradation was demonstrated not only in non-polar solvents （such as heptane）, but also in polar aprotic solvents （acetonitrile, acetone） that are miscible with water.
