An extensive analysis of iron-nitrogen-carbon(Fe-N-C)electrocatalysts synthesis and activity is presented concerning synthesis conditions such as initial Fe content,pyrolysis temperature and atmosphere(inert N_(2),reducing NH_(3),oxidizing Cl_(2) and their sequential combinations)and the influence of an external magnetic field on their performance in oxygen reduction reaction(ORR).Thermosetting porous polymers doped with FeCl_(3) were utilized as the Fe-N-C catalysts *** pyrolysis temperature was varied within a 700-900℃*** temperature and atmosphere of pyrolysis strongly affect the porosity and compositi on of the resultant Fe-N-C catalysts,while the in itial amount of Fe precursor shows much weaker *** under NH_(3) yields materials similar to those pyrolyzed under an inert atmosphere(N_(2)).In contrast,pyrolysis under Cl_(2) yields carbon of peculiar character with highly disordered structure and extensive *** application of a static external magnetic field strongly enhances the ORR process(herein studied in an alkaline environment)and the enhancement correlates with the Fe content in the Fe-N-C *** Fe-N-C materials containing ferromagnetic iron phase embedded in N-doped microporous carbon constitute attractive catalysts for magnetic field-aided anion exchange membrane fuel cell technology.

We report the first high-repetition-rate generation and simultaneous characterization of nanosecond-scale return currents of kA-magnitude issued by the polarization of a target irradiated with a pW-class high-repetition-rate titanium:sapphire laser system at relativistic *** present experimental results obtained with the VEGA-3 laser at intensities from5×10^(18)to 1.3×10^(20)W cm^(-2).A non-invasive inductive return-current monitor is adopted to measure the derivative of return currents of the order of kA ns-1and analysis methodology is developed to derive return *** compare the current for copper,aluminium and Kapton targets at different laser *** data show the stable production of current peaks and clear prospects for the tailoring of the pulse shape,which is promising for future applications in highenergy-density science,for example,electromagnetic interference stress tests,high-voltage pulse response measurements and charged particle beam *** compare the target discharge of the order of hundreds of nC with theoretical predictions and a good agreement is found.

BACKGROUND Tourniquets are commonly used in elective extremity orthopaedic surgery to reduce blood loss,improve visualization in the surgical field,and to potentially reduce surgical *** is a lack of consensus in existing guidelines regarding the optimal tourniquet pressure,placement site,and duration of *** is a paucity of data on the relationship between the site of a tourniquet and postoperative pain in foot and ankle *** To explore the relationship between tourniquet site and intensity of post-operative pain scores in patients undergoing elective foot and ankle *** Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data on 201 patients who underwent foot and ankle surgery in a single institution was *** tourniquet duration,tourniquet pressure and site,and postoperative pain scores using Visual Analogue Score were collected in immediate recovery,at six hours and at 24 h *** plots were used to analyse the data and to assess for the statistical correlation between tourniquet pressure,duration,site,and pain scores using pearson correlation *** All patients who underwent foot and ankle surgery had tourniquet pressure of 250 mmHg for ankle tourniquet and 300 mmHg for *** was no correlation between the site of the tourniquet and pain scores in recovery,at six hours and after 24 *** was a weak correlation between tourniquet time and Visual Analogue Score immediately post-op(r=0.14,p=0.04)but not at six or 24 h *** This study shows that there was no statistically significant correlation between tourniquet pressure,site and postop pain in patients undergoing foot and ankle *** choice of using a tourniquet is based on the surgeon's preference,with the goal of minimizing the duration of its application at the operative site.

Leaf area index estimated by direct, semi-direct, and indirect methods in European beech and sycamore maple stands

Leaf area index(LAI)is one of the most important characteristics of forest stands that affects the fundamentals of tree physiological processes,biomass production,and mechanical *** LAI results obtained by the semi-direct and indirect methods(the needle technique and an LAI-2000 pCA)in three European beech(Fagus sylvatica L.)stands and one sycamore maple(Acer pseudoplatanus L.)stand were compared with LAI estimated by litter traps during the 2013 growing *** LAI was estimated using an LAI-2000 pCA which showed similar trends among the stands and strongly corresponded to phenological phases of deciduous stands in Europe,with the fastest rate of leaf area increment occurring during the first month following bud *** the growing season,maximum stand LAI value was on June 19th and reached 4.5–5.1,and 4.0 in the beech and maple stands,*** needle technique significantly underestimated(pple stands,*** LAI-2000 pCA insignificantly underestimated(p>05)LAI on average by 15.1%and 5.8%in the beech and maple stands,*** methods for LAI estimation at the stand level could be applicable in deciduous forest stands(beech,maple)with similar site and stand ***,calibration by direct method is necessary to obtain the required precision.

Antinociceptive effects of novel melatonin receptor agonists in mouse models of abdominal pain

AIM: To characterize the antinociceptive action of the novel melatonin receptor (MT) agonists, Neu-p11 and Neu-p12 in animal models of visceral pain. METHODS: Visceral pain was induced by intracolonic (ic) application of mustard oil or capsaicin solution or by intraperitoneal (ip) administration of acetic acid. Neu-p11, Neu-p12, or melatonin were given ip or orally and their effects on pain-induced behavioral responses were evaluated. To identify the receptors involved, the non-selective MT1/MT2 receptor antagonist luzindole, the MT2 receptor antagonist 4-p-pDOT, or the mu-opioid receptor antagonist naloxone were injected ip or intra-cerebroventricularly (icv) prior to the induction of pain. RESULTS: Orally and ip administered melatonin, Neu-p11, and Neu-p12 reduced pain responses in a dose-dependent manner. Neu-p12 was more effective and displayed longer duration of action compared to melatonin. The antinociceptive effects of Neu-p11 or Neu-p12 were antagonized by ip or icv. administered naloxone. Intracerebroventricularly, but not ip administration of luzindole or 4-p-pDOT blocked the antinociceptive actions of Neu-p11 or Neu-p12. CONCLUSION: Neu-p12 produced the most potent and long-lasting antinociceptive effect. Further development of Neu-p12 for future treatment of abdominal pain seems promising. This report presents the case of an 8.5-year-old boy with Down syndrome after experiencing extensive caustic injury to the oesophagus and stomach resulting from the accidental ingestion of concentrated sulphuric *** patient had undergone 32 unsuccessful endoscopic oesophageal stricture dilatations and stenting procedures performed over a period of 15 mo following the *** reconstruction of the oesophagus was not possible due to previous gastric and cardiac surgeries for congenital *** referring the patient for salivary fistula surgery,the patient received a nasogastric tube with perforations located above the upper margin of the oesophageal stenosis for the passage of saliva and *** tube was well tolerated and improved swallowing;however the backflow of gastric contents caused recurrent infections of the respiratory *** overcome these problems,we developed a double lumen,varying diameter,perforated tube for protection of the oesophageal *** nasogastric tube was found to be safe and decreased the need for hospitalization and further endoscopic *** newly developed tube can thus be considered as a treatment option for patients with recurrent oesophageal stenosis and contraindications for surgical oesophageal reconstruction.

Magnesium (Mg) alloys have become a potential material for orthopedic implants due to their unnecessary implant removal, biocompatibility, and mechanical integrity until fracture healing. This study examined the in vitro and in vivo degradation of an Mg fixation screw composed of Mg-0.45Zn-0.45Ca (ZX00, in wt.%). With ZX00 human-sized implants, in vitro immersion tests up to 28 days under physiological conditions, along with electrochemical measurements were performed for the first time. In addition, ZX00 screws were implanted in the diaphysis of sheep for 6, 12, and 24 weeks to assess the degradation and biocompatibility of the screws in vivo. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), micro-computed tomography (μCT), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XpS), and histology, the surface and cross-sectional morphologies of the corrosion layers formed, as well as the bone-corrosion-layer-implant interfaces, were analyzed. Our findings from in vivo testing demonstrated that ZX00 alloy promotes bone healing and the formation of new bone in direct contact with the corrosion products. In addition, the same elemental composition of corrosion products was observed for in vitro and in vivo experiments;however, their elemental distribution and thicknesses differ depending on the implant location. Our findings suggest that the corrosion resistance was microstructure-dependent. The head zone was the least corrosion-resistant, indicating that the production procedure could impact the corrosion performance of the implant. In spite of this, the formation of new bone and no adverse effects on the surrounding tissues demonstrated that the ZX00 is a suitable Mg-based alloy for temporary bone implants.

Correlations between skin lesions induced by anti-tumor necrosis factor-α and selected cytokines in Crohn's disease patients

AIM:To investigate the correlation between the appearance of skin lesions and concentration of interleukin(IL)-17A,IL-23 and interferon-γ(IFN-γ)in Crohn’s disease(CD)patients during anti-tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)therapy METHODS:A prospective study included 30 adult patients with CD of Caucasian origin(19 men and 11women;mean age±SD 32.0±8.6 years)during biological therapy with anti-TNF-αantibodies from January2012 to March *** patients were treated with infliximab,seven with adalimumab and five *** criteria were exacerbation of the underlying disease,Crohn’s Disease Activity Index over 300 and the ineffectiveness of previously used non-biological *** with a history of psoriasis,atopic dermatitis and other autoimmune skin lesions were excluded from the *** control group consisted of 12 healthy subjects.A diagnostic survey was carried out,blood tests and careful skin examination were performed,and the serum levels of IL-17,IL-23 and IFN-γwere measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays *** that have developed in the course of biological therapy in patients who had no pre-existing skin lesions of similar character were qualified as skin lesions induced by antiTNF-α***:Skin manifestations occurred in 18 of CD patients during the anti-TNF-αtherapy(60%),in the average time of 10.16±3.42 mo following the beginning of the 52-wk treatment *** lesions observed in CD patients during biological therapy included psoriasiform lesions(44.4%),and eczema forms lesions(22.2%).In CD patients with drug induced skin lesions significantly higher levels of hemoglobin(13.3±1.5 g/dL vs 10.8±1.9 g/dL,p=0.018)and hematocrit(39.9%±4.5%vs 34.3%±5.4%,p=0.01),as well as a significantly lower level of platelets(268±62×103/μL vs 408±239×103/μL,p=0.046)was observed compared with CD patients without skin *** concentrations of IL-17A and IL-23in CD patients with skin lesions developed

Cerium dioxide as a new reactive sorbent for fast degradation of parathion methyl and some other organophosphates

Cerium dioxide was used for the first time as reactive sorbent for the degradation of the organophosphate pesticides para-thion methyl, chlorpyrifos, dichlofenthion, fenchlorphos, and prothiofos, as well as of some chemical warfare agents-nerve gases soman and O-ethyl S-[2-（diisopropylamino） ethyl] methylphosphonothioate （VX）. CeO2 specimens were prepared by calcination of basic cerous carbonate obtained by precipitation from an aqueous solution. The CeO2 samples containing certain amounts （1 wt.%-5 wt.%） of the neighboring lanthanides （La, pr, Nd） were prepared in a similar way from pure lanthanide salts. It was shown that ceria accelerated markedly the decomposition of parathion methyl causing the cleavage of the p-O-aryl bond in the pesticide molecule. A similar reaction mechanism was proposed for the degradation of other organophosphate pesticides and nerve agents. The degradation times （reaction half-times） were in an order of minutes in the presence of CeO2, compared to hours or days under common environ-mental conditions. The reaction in suitable organic solvents allowed conversions of about 90%for parathion methyl loading of 20 mg pesticide/g CeO2 within 2 h with a reactant half-life in the order of 0.1 min. The key parameter governing the degradation efficiency of CeO2 was the temperature during calcination. At optimum calcination temperature （about 773.15 K）, the produced ceria retained a sufficiently high surface area, and attained an optimum degree of crystallinity （related to a number of crystal defects, and thus poten-tial reactive sites）. The presence of other lanthanides somewhat decreased the reaction rate, but this effect was not detrimental and permitted the possible use of chemically impure ceria as a reactive sorbent. A fast organophosphate degradation was demonstrated not only in non-polar solvents （such as heptane）, but also in polar aprotic solvents （acetonitrile, acetone） that are miscible with water.
