Batesian mimicry is the process in which harmless species adopt the appearance of a dangerous, aposematic *** some prey species,both Batesian mimetic and non-Batesian morphs coexist,presupposing that both morphs have to be evolutionarily *** viperine snake, Natrix maura,exhibits a zigzag dorsal pattern and antipredatory behavior that mimics European *** snake also has a striped dorsal pattern that coexists with the zigzag *** have examined whether individuals belonging to different geographically structured clades were more likely to exhibit a certain dorsal pattern,and whether the zigzag pattern has a protective function by exposing artificial snakes to predation in natural environments,in addition to comparing antipredatory behavior between zigzag and striped snakes also in natural *** results indicate that the striped pattern was not geographically structured,but *** predators less frequently attacked zigzag plasticine models than striped or unpatterned *** detected a shift in antipredator behavior between the 2 morphs,as Batesian mimicking *** responded to an approaching potential predator by remaining immobile or fleeing at shorter distances than did striped *** conclude that Batesian mimics maintain the cryptic and aposematic value by resembling vipers,whereas in open habitats the non-Batesian mimic has altered its antipredator behavior to maintain its fitness.

Punctual mutations in 23s rRNA gene of clarithromycinresistant Helicobacter pylori in Colombian populations

AIM To characterize punctual mutations in 23s rRNA gene of clarithromycin-resistant Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) and determine their association with therapeutic *** PCR products of 23s rRNA gene V domain of 74 H. pylori isolates; 34 resistant to clarithromycin(29 from a low-risk gastric cancer(GC) population: TumacoColombia, and 5 from a high-risk population: TuquerresColombia) and 40 from a susceptible population(28 from Tumaco and 12 from Túquerres) were sequenced using capillary electrophoresis. The concordance between mutations of V domain 23s rRNA gene of H. pylori and therapeutic failure was determined using the Kappa coefficient and Mc Nemar's test was performed to determine the relationship between H. pylori mutationsand clarithromycin ***23s rRNA gene from H. pylori was amplified in 56/74 isolates, of which 25 were resistant to clarithromycin(20 from Tumaco and 5 from Túquerres, respectively). In 17 resistant isolates(13 from Tumaco and 4 from Túquerres) the following mutations were found: A1593 T1, A1653 G2, C1770 T, C1954 T1, and G1827 C in isolates from Tumaco, and A2144 G from Túquerres. The mutations T2183 C, A2144 G and C2196 T in H. pylori isolates resistant to clarithromycin from Colombia are reported for the first time. No association between the H. pylori mutations and in vitro clarithromycin resistance was found. However, therapeutic failure of eradication treatment was associated with mutations of 23s rRNA gene in clarithromycin-resistant H. pylori(κ = 0.71).CONCLUsION The therapeutic failure of eradication treatment in the two populations from Colombia was associated with mutations of the 23s rRNA gene in clarithromycinresistant H. pylori.

An Inactivated Vaccine from a Field strain of Bovine Herpesvirus-1(BoHV-1) has High Antigenic Mass and Induces strong Efficacy in a Rabbit Model

Bovine Herpesvirus-1 （BoHV-1） is a DNA virus belonging to the family Herpesviridae, subfamily Alfaherpesvirinae; it is a worldwide pathogen, causing serious economic losses in livestock. In Colombia there have been multiple isolates of BoHV-1 that have been subjected to molecular characterization, classifying most of the country isolates as BoHV-I.1. In the present study we developed and evaluated an ethyleneimine binary inactivated isolate from the native BoHV-1 strain （C6rdoba-2） in a rabbit model of vaccination and infection. The vaccine was evaluated in two phases, one of immunogenicity with vaccination and a booster after 21 days, and an evaluation phase of protection against challenge with a highly virulent reference strain. The results demonstrate optimum serum-conversion, with protective neutralizing antibody titers 28 days post vaccination and optimal protection against challenge with the reference strain with decreased clinical signs of infection, protection against the onset of fever and decrease of virus excretion post challenge. In conclusion, our results show the enormous potential that an immunogenic inactivated vaccine has produced from the native BoHV-I.1 strain, which produces a high antigen mass to the vaccine to induce optimal immunity and protection, and it is a strong candidate for evaluation and possible future use in different cattle populations.

The flowerpiercers interactions with a community of high Andean plants

Background:Flowerpiercers(Diglossa)are traditionally considered as“parasites”of the pollination processes,as they can access the nectar without entering in contact with the reproductive structures of the ***,the effect of flowerpiercers seems to vary according to their behavior and the flower’s ***,in this work,we aimed to explore the floral characteristics that may determine the susceptibility to robbing and pollen transport by ***,we identified the potential types of interactions and studied interaction network ***:We collected the information of 16 ornithophilic plants regarding their floral traits and robbing ***,we captured 4 species of flowerpiercers and evaluated pollen transport(frequency and loads).We tested the correlation between floral traits,robbing frequency,and pollen ***,we used these variables in a cluster and principal component analyses to identify the potential types of ***,we analyzed and com-pared the structure of the plants-flowerpiercers interaction ***:Nectar production significantly influenced both nectar robbing and pollen *** the corolla length was only correlated to the robbing ***,we found that particular flowerpiercers species trans-ported higher loads of some plant pollen,which can be related to the differences in behavior and morphometric *** proposed the classification of five different types of plant-flowerpiercer interactions,that showed differ-ent potential mutualist or antagonist relations based on the affectation of nectar robbing and the service of pollen *** interaction networks consisted of 49 links,with 2.4 links per species,and presented indicators of a medium to high resilience,stability,and resistance(nestedness,connectance,and robustness).Also,the network presented medium to low specialization and substantial niche ***:The ecological role of

Genomic variability of Helicobacter pylori isolates of gastric regions from two Colombian populations

AIMTo compare the genomic variability and the multiple colonization of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in patients with chronic gastritis from two Colombian populations with contrast in the risk of developing gastric cancer (GC): Túquerres-Nariño (High risk) and Tumaco-Nariño (Low risk).METHODsFour hundred and nine patients from both genders with dyspeptic symptoms were studied. seventy-two patients were included in whom H. pylori was isolated from three anatomic regions of the gastric mucosa, (31/206) of the high risk population of GC (Túquerres) and (41/203) of the low risk population of GC (Tumaco). The isolates were genotyped by PCR-RAPD. Genetic diversity between the isolates was evaluated by conglomerates analysis and multiple correspondence *** proportion of virulent genotypes of H. pylori was 99% in Túquerres and 94% in Tumaco. The coefficient of similarity of Nei-Li showed greater genetic diversity among isolates of Túquerres (0.13) than those of Tumaco (0.07). After adjusting by age, gender and type of gastritis, the multiple colonization was 1.7 times more frequent in Túquerres than in Tumaco (P = 0.05).CONCLUsIONIn Túquerres, high risk of GC there was a greater probability of multiple colonization by H. pylori. From the analysis of the results of the PCR-RAPD, it was found higher genetic variability in the isolates of H. pylori in the population of high risk for the development of GC.

Cementite Characterization with Chromium and Vanadium Contents Using Indentation Technique

Cast irons with some kinds of cementite with different chromium and vanadium contents were character- ized. Fracture toughness was determined by using an indentation technique, along with microhardness and elastic modulus. The results show that at the load of 1 N, microhardness of the cementite with 5.1% Cr is 10.53 GPa, the microhardness for cementite with 9.2% Cr increased to 11.25 GPa and for cementite with 4.5% V the microhard- ness is 9.18 GPa. The cementite with 9.2% Cr presented the highest elastic modulus of 230.4 GPa and the cement- ire with 4% V presented the lowest value of 201.32 GPa. Cementite with 5.1% Cr presented higher fracture tough- ness than cementite with 9.2% Cr; however, cementite with 4.5% V presented the highest fracture toughness of 2.74 MPa ·m1/2 and the lowest brittleness index of 3.35 μm-1/2.

Colombia aims to boost the utilization of mass transportation systems in its major cities while simultaneously reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20%,in alignment with the commitments of the COP21 *** 2020,the transport sector in Colombia accounted for 34.4%of the country’s energy demand and was responsible for~49%of its total CO_(2) *** article presents an assessment of energy consumption,environmental effects and the fuel costs of Bogotá’s bus rapid transit system based on the Activity,share,Intensity,Fuel methodology.A long-term analysis spanning from 2021 to 2040 was developed using the long-range energy alternatives planning *** conduct this assessment,the tool was calibrated using data from 2019 and *** distinct scenarios based on energy policies implemented in Bogotáwere examined:Business as Usual,Fast Transition,High Growth and Low *** energy consumption and environmental effects,the results underscore the pivotal role of diversifying energy sources and reducing reliance on fossil fuels such as ***,the analysis emphasizes the urgent need to accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources such as natural gas and electricity.

Molecular and in vitro Characterization of Field Isolates of Bovine Herpesvirus-1

Bovine Herpesvirus-1 (BoHV-1) is distributed worldwide and is a major pathogen in cattle, being the causal agent of a variety of clinical syndromes. The aim of this study was to isolate and to characterize (molecular and biological characterization) BoHV-1 from 29 immunosuppressed animals. It was possible to obtain 18 isolates, each from a different animal, such as from the respiratory and reproductive tracts. In some cases the cytopathic effect was visible 12 hours post-inoculation, and became characteristic after 36-48 hours. Biological characteristics were evaluated and compared with Iowa and Colorado-1 reference strains, and differences were found in plaque size, virus titer measured by TCID50 and PFU/mL, and one step virus curves. These results showed that some isolates had a highly virulent-like behavior in vitro, compared to the reference strains, with shorter eclipse periods, faster release of virus into the supernatants, and higher burst size and viral titer. There were no differences in glycoprotein expression of BoHV-1 isolates, measured by Western blot on monolayers. Moreover, using restriction endonucleases analysis, most of the viruses were confirmed as BoHV-1.1 and just one of them was confirmed as BoHV-1.2a subtype. These findings suggest that some wild-type BoHV-1 isolates could be useful as seeds to develop new monovalent vaccines.
