Evaluation of Pesticidal Activities of Lignans Isolated from Piper cubeba Fruits

The identification of natural, plant-derived compounds with pesticidal properties is crucial for developing environmentally sustainable alternatives to synthetic pesticides. In this study, four major lignans—dihydroclusin, cubebin, clusin, and yatein—were isolated from the crude extract of Piper cubeba fruit. Phytotoxicity assays revealed herbicidal activity against Agrostis stolonifera, with dihydroclusin and clusin exhibiting the highest efficacy, inhibiting seed germination by 50% and showing IC50 values of 2.9 µM and 45 µM, respectively, against Lemna paucicostata. Additionally, all compounds, except dihydroclusin, demonstrated fungicidal activity against the strawberry anthracnose pathogen Colletotrichum fragariae. Moreover, only dihydroclusin exhibited larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti, causing 96% mortality of mosquito larvae at the 100-ppm concentration tested. These findings highlight the broad-spectrum bioactivity of Piper cubeba lignans, suggesting their potential as alternative agents of synthetic pesticides for managing agricultural pests.

Dear Editor,The severe coronavirus disease 2019(COviD-19)is associated with ***,such as low-molecular-weight heparin,warfarin,thrombin inhibitors,and factor Xa(FXa)inhibitors,are thus recommended by the American Society of Hematology and national Institutes of Health for COviD-19 patients(Wenzler et al.,2020;Adam et al.,2021).Clinical trials with anticoagulants have shown the increased survival of critically ill COviD-19 patients under non-invasive and invasive ventilatory assistance(Wenzler et al.,2020;Adam et al.,2021),along with decreased consumption of platelets and clotting factors and a reduced risk of hemorrhage(Adam et al.,2021).Among the anti-clotting agents,early use of orally available FXa and thrombin inhibitors(Chowdhury et al.,2020;Rentsch et al.,2021)prevented high levels of D-dimer,which is the final product from the clotting/fibrinolysis cascade and is directly implicated with severe COviD-19(Rentsch et al.,2021).

First isolation and identification of H1n1 swine influenza viruses in Colombian pig farms

The pig industry in Colombia has grown 30% in the last decade achieving high levels of technology and efficiency;in spite of that, respiratory diseases remain a constraint. Since 1970, serological evidence and histological findings suggested the role of swine influenza virus (SIV) as part of the porcine respiratory disease complex;nevertheless, elusive and molecular typing isolates are missing. This study was aimed at isolating SIV from intensive pig farms and to achieve molecular characterization to determine strains circulating in the field. In order to accomplish this goal, 242 samples were taken from nasal swabs, 25 from bronchial washes and 8 from lung tissue. Samples were collected during a period of three years, between 2008 and 2010 and were originated from 78 farms of the three main pig production regions of the country. The samples were transported in BHI broth with 2% antibiotic and antimycotic solution and stored at –70?C until processed. The swabs were inoculated in 9 - 11 days old embryo chicken eggs and in MDCK (Madin Darby Canine Kidney) cell cultures with the addition of trypsin. The isolates were identified by the HA (hemoagglutination) test and by RT-PCR targeting the HA (hemagglutinin), nA (neuraminidase) and M (Matrix) genes. Full length sequence of the HA and nA glycoproteins from four selected virus isolates was conducted (Macrogen?. USA). As a result, fifteen SIV isolates from nine farms distributed in the three regions were obtained. Twelve of the isolates are related to the swine origin H1n1 virus that caused the 2009 influenza pandemic. The remaining three viruses were related to classical swine influenza viruses.

Autoimmune hepatitis in human immunodeficiency virus infection: Case report and literature review

The infection due to human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) is characterized by the progressive reduction of CD4+ T lymphocytes and the compromise of other cell lines of the immune system, resulting in immunosuppression. In this context, autoimmune diseases could be considered contradictory, however, cases of autoimmune diseases during this infection have been described, including autoimmune hepatitis(AIH), which is uncommon and has few case reports within medical literature, none of them from Latin America. In this case report where a patient with an HIV infection on combined antiretroviral treatment developed acute elevation of transaminases, hyperbilirubinemia, and deterioration in hepatic synthetic function. Although initially an antiretroviral drug-induced liver injury was suspected, during the study a diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis was proven, which required treatment with corticosteroid and azathioprine, obtaining a satisfactory response and managing to continue the antiretroviral therapy. Autoimmune diseases in HIV infection must be taken into account. In the case of hepatitis in patients with HIV on antiretroviral treatment, the differentiation between viral hepatitis caused by autoimmune diseases or medications is essential to establish an adequate treatment, and avoid the suspension of the antiretroviral therapy.

Production of Peanut Intercropped with Forage Palm in Pernambuco State, Brazil

The greater use of crop fields by increasing plant population is an alternative to minimize losses to the farmers who use crop intercropped provides other benefits such as lower incidence of diseases and pests, and better exploitation and enrichment agroecosystem. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the population of peanuts with and without inoculation and intercropping with forage palm on growth, productivity and biomass peanut. The treatments consisted of different populations of peanut (one, two and three rows of peanut row spacing of two meters of cactus pear), with and without inoculant, analyzed in subdivided plot scheme (3 × 2), totalizing six treatments in a randomized block design with four replications. The variables evaluated were plant height, number of branches, shoot dry mass and root nodule number, nodule dry weight, biomass productivity and legumes. The largest population of plants in number of lines of peanut intercropped with forage cactus promotes greater total biomass production and yield of beans and does not alter the height, branch number, dry mass of aerial part roots and nodules. The inoculant application did not result in to increased productivity biomass and growth of peanut plants, their use is not indicated. The planting of a row of peanuts between the rows of palm is not economically recommended.

The determination of available phosphorus(P)in soil is essential to the evaluation of the current fertility status,and therefore,for recommending the required phosphate fertilizers for the cultivation of *** mostly used extractants around the country are Mehlich-1(M-1)and anionic resins(AR)and mixed resins(MR).However,there are still controversies in relation to the method that should be used,due to of particularities of each ***,the main objectives of this work was to assess the applicability of films of binary combination between cellulose acetate(CA)biopolymer and calcinated layered double hydroxide(LDH-c),named CAF-LDH-c,as a new extractor of available P in *** this,two experiments were set *** the first one,sub-samples of an Oxisol layer 0-20 cm were used and submitted to increasing doses of total P(0,250,750 and 2,250 mg/dm3)in the form of monoammonium phosphate(MAP)at different incubation time(5,30,60 and 90 d).In the second experiment,samples of 20 soils from different origins and contents of available P were used with distinct chemical and physical *** analysis of available P by M-1,AR,MR,Mehlich-3(M-3)and CAF-LDH-c extractants was done in both *** efficiency of the extractants was evaluated by Pearson’s linear *** correlation between values of P extracted from soil in the first experiment was highly significant among all extraction methods used,including for *** the second experiment,CAF-LDH-c showed significant correlation(pnd ***,the significant correlations of the extractant being tested(CAF-LDH-c)with those usually used indicates the possibility of this new method of routine laboratories for assessing the P availability of for the cultivation of crops.

Modeling Groundwater Levels on the Calera Aquifer Region in Central Mexico Using ModFIow

A conceptual model for the Calera Aquifer has been created to represent the aquifer system beneath the Calera Aquifer Region （CAR） in the State of Zacatecas, Mexico. The CAR area was uniformly partitioned into a 500 x 500 m grid generating a high resolution model that represented the natural boundaries of the aquifer. A computer model was calibrated and validated to verify output from the model corresponding to situations that matched the historical aquifer performance. Predicted groundwater levels were compared with measured data collected from nine observation wells between 1954 and 2004 to evaluate model performance. The main objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a groundwater modeling system using ModFlow-2000 for the CAR. Performance statistics indicated that the model performed well in simulating historic groundwater levels in the central part of the CAR where irrigated agriculture was concentrated. Results evaluation yielded average coefficients of determination of 0.81 and 0.67 and root mean square error values lower than 25.1 m and 25.9 m for the calibration and validation processes, respectively. These results are indicative of a good agreement between predicted and observed groundwater levels. However, further improvements in the conceptual model may be needed to improve predictions in other parts of the CAR for evaluating alternative groundwater management strategies.

With demand increasing for phosphate recovery,a considerable share of current research is dedicated to elaborate multifunctional *** this way,the objective of this work was to produce hybrid films from the combination of cellulose acetate(CA)biopolymer and magnesium and aluminium layered double hydroxides(LDHs)and investigate their performance for phosphate *** this work,the following materials were prepared and characterized:LDH,calcinated LDH(LDH-c),CA film(CAF),CA film with LDH(CAF-LDH)and CA film with LDH-c(CAF-LDH-c).The produced materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction,thermogravimetric analysis coupled with differential scanning calorimetry and mass spectrometry,attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electronic *** thickness,H2O absorption(AH2O),stability in H2O and phosphate adsorption of the produced films were *** adsorption capacity of films was compared to LDHs in powder *** CAF-LDH and CAF-LDH-c increased film thickness,where CAF-LDH-c was thicker than ***-LDH-c had higher AH2O than the other films,because of its increased thickness and mainly because of the H2O sorption process of these materials.H2O stability of 98.97%for CAF-LDH and 96.81%for CAF-LDH-c suggest the produced films can maintain their structural properties even after a long contact period with aqueous *** the CAF-LDH-c,the maximum adsorption capacity of phosphate,according to the Langmuir-Freundlich model,was 6.98 mg/*** adsorption value suggests that this film can be used as an efficient phosphorus(P)adsorbent from wastewater or a eutrophicated source.
