Smoking and Serum Lipid Profiles in Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is associated with a high preva- lence of cigarette-smoking and abnormal lipid profiles. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the profiles differ between schizophrenic smokers and non-smokers and whether the lipid profiles are related to psychopathological symptoms. Serum lipid profiles were measured in 130 male inpatients with DSM-IV-defined schizophrenia： 104 smokers and 26 non-smokers. Symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale （PANSS）. Our results showed that positive PANSS symp- toms were fewer in smokers than in non-smokers, while the negative symptoms were fewer in those who smoked more cigarettes. Total protein and globulin levels were significantly lower in the smokers than in the non-smokers. However, there was no significant difference in total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein choles terol （HDL-c）, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, apolipoprotein A1, or apolipoprotein B between the smokers and non-smokers. However, the PANSS positive subscale had a significant negative correlation with the HDL-c levels （a protective factor） in the smokers but not in the non-smokers. Our findings suggest that schizophrenic patients who smoke have fewer psychotic symptoms, but contrary to expectation, smoking does not alter lipid profile levels.

Minimally Invasive Surgery for Necrotizing Pancreatitis: A case Report

Introduction: Necrotizing pancreatitis management is complex and varies significantly among clinicians. Minimally invasive approaches like transgastric necrosectomy via laparoscopy are emerging as effective treatment options. This case report underscores the technique’s efficacy, clinical outcomes, and role in reducing complications. clinical Observation: A 59-year-old male with a history of smoking and alcoholism presented with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Over the following weeks, he developed symptoms including asthenia, weight loss, and melena. Diagnostic workup revealed severe anemia and Balthazar E necrotizing pancreatitis, with significant intra-abdominal fluid collections and signs of infection. After initial conservative management, the patient underwent transgastric necrosectomy via laparoscopy due to deteriorating clinical status. The procedure involved removing necrotic tissue and performing a cystogastroanastomosis and jejunostomy. Postoperative care included fasting, parenteral nutrition, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and enzymatic replacement. The patient recovered well, with reduced necrotic tissue on follow-up imaging, and was discharged twelve days post-surgery [1]. conclusion: Transgastric necrosectomy by laparoscopy is a valuable first-line surgical option for patients with symptomatic necrotizing pancreatitis, particularly in cases without prior interventions. This minimally invasive technique helps reduce major complications and mortality, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional open necrosectomy. The multidisciplinary approach and careful postoperative management were crucial to the patient’s favorable outcome. The case highlights the potential of transgastric necrosectomy as an effective treatment strategy in managing complex pancreatitis cases, including those with associated duodenal perforation [2].

Effects of porosity,dry unit weight,cement content and void/cement ratio on unconfined compressive strength of roof tile waste-silty soil mixtures

One of the conventional ways to improve the mechanical behavior of soils is to mix them with cementing agents such as cement, lime and fly ash. Recently, introduction to alternative materials or sub-products that can be adopted to improve the soil strength is of paramount importance. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the effects of porosity(h), dry unit weight(gd) of molding, cement content(c)and porosity/volumetric cement content ratio(h/civ) or void/cement ratio on the unconfined compressive strength(quor UcS) of silty soileroof tile waste(RT) mixtures. Soil samples are molded into four different dry unit weights(i.e. 13 kN/m^3, 13.67 kN/m^3, 14.33 kN/m^3 and 15 kN/m^3) using 3%, 6% and 9%cement and 5%, 15% and 30% RT. The results show that with the addition of cement, the strength of the RT esoil mixtures increases in a linear manner. On the other hand, the addition of RT decreases quof the samples at a constant percentage of cement, and the decrease in porosity can increase qu. A dosage equation is derived from the experimental data using the porosity/volumetric cement content ratio(h/c_(iv)) where the control variables are the moisture content, crushed tile content, cement content and porosity.

Optimizing the evolution of strength for lime-stabilized rammed soil

In the present study,unconfined compressive strength(qu)values of two lime-treated soils(soil 1 and 2)with curing times of 28 d,90 d and 360 d were *** influence of void/lime ratio was represented by the porosity/volumetric lime content ratio(η/Liv)as the main parameter.η/Liv represents the volume of void influenced by compaction effort and lime *** evolution of qu was analyzed for each soil using the coefficient of determination as the optimization *** at providing adjustments to the mechanical resistance values,the η/Liv parameter was modified to η/Livc using the adjustment exponent c(to make qu-η/Liv variation rates compatible).The results show that with the decrease of η/*** increases potentially and the optimized values of c were *** mechanical resistance data show similar trends between qu and η/Livc for the studied silty soil-ground lime mixtures,which were cured at ambient temperature(23±2)℃ with different curing times of 28-360 ***,optimized equations were presented using the normalized strengths and the proposed optimization model,which show 6% error and 95% acceptability on average.

Genetic Variability of Brachiaria ruziziensis clones to collaria oleosa(Hemiptera:Miridae)Based on Leaf Injuries

collaria oleosa causes leaf injuries to the main forage grasses used for cattle feeding in Brazil. The aim of this work was to determine resistance of B. ruziziensis clones against c. oleosa. Eighty B. ruziziensis clones were maintained in greenhouse, in which c. oleosa natural infestations have been occurring in previous years. After 40 days, damage score and chlorophyll content reduction were assessed for all clones. By using these parameters, genetic gain was estimated based on REML/BLUP mixed models. We observed significant differences for damage scores and chlorophyll content reduction among B. ruziziensis clones, evidencing genetic variability in this forage specie in regard to resistance against c. oleosa. Gain derived from selection of the 10 best clones was 18.2% and 5.80% when considering the damage score and chlorophyll content reduction, respectively. The clones cNPGL BR 10, cNPGL BR 64, cNPGL BR 97 and cNPGL BR 40 presented the highest genetic gain for both damage score and chlorophyll content reduction, and then they will be selected to continue the B. ruziziensis breeding program with the possibility of maximizing genetic gain for the next generations.

In this paper, a novel solid state Nitric Oxide (NO) sensor made of a spin trap (iron(II)-diethyldithiocarbamate complex, FeDETc) encapsulated in a siloxane-poly(oxypropylene) (PPO) matrix was developed. Nitric oxide (NO), a free radical molecule, has numerous roles in various physiological functions, such as the regulation of blood pressure, immune response to bacterial infection, and nervous systems. Siloxane-polyether hybrid materials, for example siloxane-poly(oxypropylene) (PPO), are easy to prepare, transparent and flexible. The combination of all these characteristics in a unique material allows it to be used in several scientific and technological areas, including human health. NO radical is trapped in FeDETc, which allows its detection by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). FeDETc was added while PPO was a sol, which was then left in air for gelation. The novel sensor was dived directly into a solution of NO, when the NO-FeDETc complex was formed. Our results show that the novel sensor responds to NO, with similar sensitivity as previously published sensors. PPO sensors present a strong EPR signal and a high stability, keeping its signal for 45 days. We have studied ways to accelerate the NO release from the sensor, in order to study its potential as a drug delivery system. We observed an acceleration in NO release by using a modulated magnetic field of 40 G at 100 kHz;as well as by UV irradiation. Thermal induced NO release was also tested by heating NO-FeDETc PPO up to 50°c, with good results.

Geostatistics as a methodology for studying the spatiotemporal dynamics of Ramularia areola in cotton crops. Geostatistics is a tool that has been used to study plant pathology, by modeling the spatiotemporal pattern of diseases, generating hypotheses about their epidemiological aspects in order to use tactics and strategies of rational control. The objective of this study was to use geostatistics to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of Ramularia areola in cotton crops. The experiment was conducted at the experimental area of Mato Grosso State University-Tangará da Serra campus, and arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial design, with randomized blocks, with two spaicngs (0.45 and 0.90 cm) and three conditions of soil coverage (no cover, P. glaucum and c. spectabilis). Geostatistical analysis of data was performed using data from temporal and spatial progress of R. areola, obtained through assessments of the incidence and severity of the disease in plants, and spatial dependence, and analyzed using semivariogram fittings. Through the isotropic exponential semivariogram model, it was possible to check the distribution pattern and spatial dependence of Ramularia leaf spot. Spatial dependence was observed for the disease—moderate to strong for most data evaluated. The pathogen spread from the primary source of inoculum, from the center portion towards the edges, forming foci originating from a source of secondary inoculum.

This study aimed to examine the prevalence and clinical correlates of tardive dyskinesia(TD) in a large sample of chinese inpatients with schizophrenia on long-term treatment with clozapine versus typical *** hundred and eighty-four male inpatients with schizophrenia on long-term clozapine(n=341) or typical antipsychotic(n=243) treatment were evaluated with the abnormal involuntary movement scale(AIMS).The patient s psychopathology was assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale(PANSS).The overall TD prevalence was 44.5%,with rates of 48.7%in the clozapine group and 38.7%in the typical antipsychotic group(p=0.017).The AIMS score was significantly lower in typical than in clozapine groups(pcandy associated with the AIMS score:clozapine vs typical medication(p=0.008),PANSS negative subscore(p=0.017) and age(p=0.04).There are significant differences in the prevalence and clinical correlates of TD in schizophrenia treated with clozapine versus typical antipsychotics.
