Rationale: Acute respiratory failure is an uncommon complication of pregnancy. However, it is the most frequent organ dysfunction associated with obstetric admissions to an intensive care unit. The obstetric population is a different group due to its physiology and the presence of the fetus that lacks evidence in the literature within the subject of ventilatory support. Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) is often avoided due to the lack of knowledge on the safety and efficacy of this modality. Currently, there are no guidelines for the management of respiratory failure in pregnancy. Objectives: To provide evidence in support of the use of NIPPV as a safe and reasonable modality for pregnant patients with respiratory failure. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 29 pregnant patients of the Obstetric Critical Care Unit of a tertiary hospital in Panamá City who received NIPPV from 2013 to 2015. Phosphate fertilizers when applied to the soil, besides being harvested by the crops, promote a residual effect that can be offered to subsequent crops. The objective of this research was to evaluate the residual effect of phosphate fertilization applied to maize cultivation on the successor crop, cowpea, in the Cerrado region in Maranhao. The research was carried out in the experimental area of Federal University of Maranhao (UFMA), located in the city of Chapadinha, MA (3°44'30"S, 43°21'37''W). The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with six treatments and four replications. The treatments were composed of the following residual P doses: 0, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 kg·ha-1 of P2O5. The cultivation of cowpea (cultivar BRS guariba) was sown at a spacing of 1.0 × 0.20 m. The cowpea proved to be efficient in the use of residual phosphate fertilization, since it promoted grain yield close to the national average. The cultivation of cowpea in previously cultivated areas is feasible, in order to take advantage of the residual phosphate fertilization in the Cerrado of East of Maranhao. The phosphorus dose applied in the predecessor crop corresponding to 80 kg·ha-1 of P2O5 promoted higher grain yield (393.44 Mg·ha-1) and a greater profit margin (US $326.26). Thus, it is feasible to grow cowpea in previously cultivated areas, in order to take advantage of residual phosphate fertilization.

We present the design and integration of a nine-pH microsensor array on a single silicon substrate with its own signal readout circuit, integrated in a 0.6-μm commercial standard complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process. An ion sensitive field effect transistor (ISFET) has been used as pH microsensor and an instrumentation amplifier as the read-out circuit. The ISFET structure is conformed by the channel length and ratio of MOS transistor, gate extended and the selective membrane, for which silicon nitride (Si3N4) is employed as an ion selective element. The complete design includes shielding around the pH microsensor and the readout circuit to avoid leakage of current to the substrate. The readout circuit is composed by three operational amplifiers and resistances that form the instrumentation amplifier, with a ±2.5 V bias has a 50 dB gain, power supply rejection ratio (PSSR) of 120 dB and common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of 127 dB. The complete system is integrated in a 1.12 mm2 silicon area;it presents a 59 mV/pH linearity, within a concentration range of 2 to 12 of pH level, making it a good alternative for biological or medical applications.

Better Selection Model for EML4-ALK Fusion Gene Test in Patients with Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer

Background: In the last decade, the search for gene mutations in lung cancer has been constantly growing. EGFR, KRAS mutations and, recently, the EML4-ALK fusion can guide the selection of treatment for patients who carry a specific mutation. Methods: During 2010-2011, EML4-ALK fusion test has been performed in Israel, mostly for wild type EGFR non-squamous NSCLC patients based on fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) technique to detect EML4-ALK rearrangements. Results: Between January 2010 and december 2011, 3341 patients were diagnosed with lung cancer in Israel. Of the 2997 patients with NSCLC 687 had squamous cell carcinoma and 2310 had non-squamous NSCLC. This study focused on available 125 non-squamous NSCLC cases in which analysis for EML4-ALK rearrangement was available. All were negative for EGFR mutation. Nineteen (15.2%) were found positive for the fusion, a figure 2 - 10 times higher compared with previously reported findings. The EML4-ALK fusion was significantly more prevalent in younger male patients (52.1 vs. 61.3 years, p = 0.049), in whom every additional year reduced the chance to find the fusion by 7% [CI = 0.93 (0.88 - 0.99), p = 0.03]. Conclusions: A stepwise approach based on histology and prior EGFR analysis to detect EML4-ALK fusion is highly efficient with a related increased yield of detection. We recommend testing patients with non-squamous cell lung carcinoma after ruling out an EGFR mutation. The chance to find the ALK fusion is significantly greater in younger men.

This study aimed to examine the prevalence and clinical correlates of tardive dyskinesia(TD) in a large sample of Chinese inpatients with schizophrenia on long-term treatment with clozapine versus typical *** hundred and eighty-four male inpatients with schizophrenia on long-term clozapine(n=341) or typical antipsychotic(n=243) treatment were evaluated with the abnormal involuntary movement scale(AIMS).The patient s psychopathology was assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale(PANSS).The overall TD prevalence was 44.5%,with rates of 48.7%in the clozapine group and 38.7%in the typical antipsychotic group(p=0.017).The AIMS score was significantly lower in typical than in clozapine groups(p<0.005).A multiple regression analysis showed that the following variables were significandy associated with the AIMS score:clozapine vs typical medication(p=0.008),PANSS negative subscore(p=0.017) and age(p=0.04).There are significant differences in the prevalence and clinical correlates of TD in schizophrenia treated with clozapine versus typical antipsychotics.

In this paper, a novel solid state Nitric Oxide (NO) sensor made of a spin trap (iron(II)-diethyldithiocarbamate complex, FedeTC) encapsulated in a siloxane-poly(oxypropylene) (PPO) matrix was developed. Nitric oxide (NO), a free radical molecule, has numerous roles in various physiological functions, such as the regulation of blood pressure, immune response to bacterial infection, and nervous systems. Siloxane-polyether hybrid materials, for example siloxane-poly(oxypropylene) (PPO), are easy to prepare, transparent and flexible. The combination of all these characteristics in a unique material allows it to be used in several scientific and technological areas, including human health. NO radical is trapped in FedeTC, which allows its detection by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). FedeTC was added while PPO was a sol, which was then left in air for gelation. The novel sensor was dived directly into a solution of NO, when the NO-FedeTC complex was formed. Our results show that the novel sensor responds to NO, with similar sensitivity as previously published sensors. PPO sensors present a strong EPR signal and a high stability, keeping its signal for 45 days. We have studied ways to accelerate the NO release from the sensor, in order to study its potential as a drug delivery system. We observed an acceleration in NO release by using a modulated magnetic field of 40 G at 100 kHz;as well as by UV irradiation. Thermal induced NO release was also tested by heating NO-FedeTC PPO up to 50°C, with good results.

Geostatistics as a methodology for studying the spatiotemporal dynamics of Ramularia areola in cotton crops. Geostatistics is a tool that has been used to study plant pathology, by modeling the spatiotemporal pattern of diseases, generating hypotheses about their epidemiological aspects in order to use tactics and strategies of rational control. The objective of this study was to use geostatistics to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of Ramularia areola in cotton crops. The experiment was conducted at the experimental area of Mato Grosso State University-Tangará da Serra campus, and arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial design, with randomized blocks, with two spaicngs (0.45 and 0.90 cm) and three conditions of soil coverage (no cover, P. glaucum and C. spectabilis). Geostatistical analysis of data was performed using data from temporal and spatial progress of R. areola, obtained through assessments of the incidence and severity of the disease in plants, and spatial dependence, and analyzed using semivariogram fittings. Through the isotropic exponential semivariogram model, it was possible to check the distribution pattern and spatial dependence of Ramularia leaf spot. Spatial dependence was observed for the disease—moderate to strong for most data evaluated. The pathogen spread from the primary source of inoculum, from the center portion towards the edges, forming foci originating from a source of secondary inoculum.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the progress of the areolate mildew of cotton under different soil cover and spacing conditions. The experiment was carried out using randomized blocks and a 2 × 3 factorial design, with two spacings (0.45 m and 0.90 m) and three soil covers (no cover, Pennisetum glaucum and Crotalaria spectabilis) with four replications. The plants were inoculated with R. areola, sixty DAS. A total of 14 evaluations of disease severity were performed. At the lower, middle and upper thirds of plants, a diagram scale with nine levels of severity was used and the resulting data were converted into the AUDPC. Gompertz, logistic, and monomolecular mathematical models were tested in the disease severity curves for each third. Agronomics characteristics were evaluated as well. Significant differences of AUDPC were found for the cotton plants thirds, and the middle third was the highest AUDPC. Significant difference for the lower and upper thirds, whose AUDPC were highest on 0.90 m spacing, was observed too. The disease progress curves of the thirds did not fit the tested models. Significant results to the both covers situations, where the treatments grown on crotalária cover and without cover had highest AUDPC, were evidenced. The treatments with C. spectabilis cover were taller than other treatments. Significant data were observed for the cover crops used and in the treatments grown at 0.90 m spacing, to residual cover and crop yield, respectively.
