Online Case Based Self-Study Modules as an Adjunct Learning Tool in Otorhinolaryngology: A Pilot Study

Background/Need for innovation: Undergraduate students in Otolaryngology are on the lookout for easy modes of learning which can help them understand concepts better as well as score more in examinations. A need was hence felt to introduce a new learning resource to supplement traditional teaching-learning methods. Methods: Digital, case based self–study modules were prepared using all open source technology and validated by experts in the specialty. The modules were uploaded on a website specifically created for the purpose. They were pilot tested on twenty consenting third year undergraduate (MBBS) students using a crossover design. Post test comprising of multiple choice questions was administered to the students after a period of two weeks. Feedback was obtained from faculty and students. Results: Test scores were found to be significantly higher amongst students who used the learning modules as a supplement to regular bedside teaching (p < 0.001;Wilcoxon signed rank test). Majority of students agreed that the modules helped them gain confidence during internal assessment examinations and would help revision. Conclusions: Online, case based, self-study modules helped students to perform better when used as a supplement to traditional teaching methods. Students agreed that it enabled easy understanding of subject and helped them gain confidence.

Fast-neutron （FN） irradiation has been used to create mutagen- ized collections of many plant species （Bolon et al., 2014）, FN- induced mutagenesis has clear advantages： it is an efficient means of saturating the genome, and it does not involve time- consuming plant transformation or tissue culture. In rice, most mutant collections, although highly valuable, were generated us- ing either T-DNA insertion or transposon tagging approaches that often induce mutations unlinked to the insertion and complicating analysis （Wang et al., 2013）. Another disadvantage of some of these collections is that they were created in rice varieties that are photoperiod-sensitive and often have long generation times.

The novel Coronavirus Disease (nCOVID-19) is a highly contagious viral infection which emerged as “Pneumonia of Unknown Etiology” at Hubei province of Wuhan city in China. The health authorities provided a considerable empirical evidence after this outbreak and it was notified that the causative virus, named Novel Coronavirus (subsequently SARS-CoV-2) is the culprit for progressively exerting grim effects not only on individual patients but also on the International public health, with high mutational tendencies. WHO declared nCOVID-19 as a Pandemic on 11th March 2020. The spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 plays a pivotal role in the entry of virus into the cell and it further interacts with ACE-II receptors which are widely distributed on the human cell surface especially on alveolar type II cells (AT-2) and endothelium. The mortality in nCOVID-19 patients is usually preceded by acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) because of the cytokine storm. Advanced molecular biology and regenerative sciences renders a breakthrough in the treatment of severely ill nCOVID-19 patients with Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs). Autologous or allogenic MSCs attenuate cytokine storm, improvise lung compliance, regulate inflammatory response, maintain functional alveoli microenvironment, promote endogenous regeneration and repair with no or minimal side effects. MSCs are naturally resistant to this novel Coronavirus. Even though it is corroborated with evidences from current clinical trials and pilot study, we emphasize the need for conducting more clinical trials with ethical consideration to prove the efficacy and safety of MSCs in combating nCOVID-19 infection and its complications.

Background: The availability of thousands of sequenced rice genomes from diverse varieties and accessions provides a rich genetic resource for in-depth exploration in rice function genomics. One drawback to these collections is that most of these rice varieties have long life cycles, and/or low transformation efficiencies, which limits their usefulness as model organisms for biological studies. In contrast, the rice variety Kitaake has a rapid life cycle(9 weeks seed to seed) and is easy to transform and propagate. For these reasons, Kitaake has emerged as a model for studies of diverse monocotyledonous species. Results: We report the de novo genome sequencing and analysis of an early flowering Geng/japonica variety KitaakeX. Our KitaakeX sequence assembly contains 377.6 Mb, consisting of 33 scaffolds(476 contigs) with a contig N50 of 1.4 Mb. Complementing the assembly are detailed gene annotations of 35,594 protein coding genes. To further facilitate rice research, we generated and sequenced a fast-neutron-induced mutant population. We sequenced 1,504 mutant lines at 45-fold coverage and identified 91,513 mutations affecting 32,307 genes, i.e., 58% of all rice genes. To facilitate public access to this genetic resource, we established an open access database called KitBase that provides access to sequence data and seed stocks. We have screened this mutant population for lines altered in plant immunity and identified multiple mutant candidates. One of them named rbl1 showed enhanced resistance to the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae. We cloned the target gene that is involved in phospholipid biosynthesis and plasma membrane integrity. RBL1 is mainly located in endoplasmic reticulum(ER). Lipidomics assays show that the phosphatidylinositol(PI) level is significantly reduced in the rbl1 mutant. We have used RNA-seq assays to analyze genes with altered expression levels and identified multiple downstream candidate genes, including receptor-like cytoplasmic kinases(

The discovery and application of genome editing introduce a new era of plant breeding,giving researchers efficient tools for the precise engineering of crop ***, we demonstrate the power of genome editing for engineering broad-spectrum disease resistance in rice( Oryza sativa).We first isolated a lesion mimic mutant( LMM) from a mutagenized rice population, demonstrated that a29-bp deletion in a gene we named RESISTANCE TO BLAST1( RBL1) caused this phenotype and showed that this mutation caused a ca.20-fold reduction in *** encodes a cytidine diphosphate diacylglycerol(CDP-DAG) synthase required for phospholipid *** of RBL1 results in reduced levels of phosphatidylinositol(P1) and its derivative PI(4, 5) *** PI(4, 5) P is enriched in cellular structures specifically associated with effector secretion and fungal infection, suggesting a role as a disease susceptibility *** targeted genome editing, we obtained an allele of RBL1, named RBL1, which confers broad-spectrum resistance but does not decrease yield in a model rice variety as assessed in small-scale field *** study has demonstrated the usefulness of editing of an LMM gene, a strategy relevant to diverse LMM genes and crops.

In dealing with nonparametric regression the GAM procedure is the most versatile of several new procedures. The terminology behind this procedure is more flexible than traditional parametric modeling tools. It relaxes the usual assumptions of parametric model and enables us to uncover structure to establish the relationship between independent variables and dependent variable in exponential family that may not be obvious otherwise. In this paper, we discussed two methods of fitting generalized additive logistic regression model, one based on Newton Raphson method and another based on iterative weighted least square method for first and second order Taylor series expansion. The use of the GAM procedure with the specified set of weights, using local scoring algorithm, was applied to real life data sets. The cubic spline smoother is applied to the independent variables. Based on nonparametric regression and smoothing techniques, this procedure provides powerful tools for data analysis.

Removing the smog from digital images is a challenging pre-processing tool in various imaging ***,many smog removal(i.e.,desmogging)models are proposed so far to remove the effect of smog from *** desmogging models are based upon a physical model,it means it requires efficient estimation of transmission map and atmospheric veil from a single smoggy ***,many prior based restoration models are proposed in the literature to estimate the transmission map and an atmospheric ***,these models utilized computationally extensive minimization of an energy ***,the existing restoration models suffer from various issues such as distortion of texture,edges,and ***,in this paper,a convolutional neural network(CNN)is used to estimate the physical attributes of smoggy *** gradient channel prior(OGCP)is utilized to restore the smoggy ***,a dataset of smoggy and sunny images are ***,we have trained CNN to estimate the smog gradient from smoggy ***,based upon the computed smog gradient,OGCP is utilized to restore the still smoggy *** analyses reveal that the proposed CNN-OGCP based desmogging model outperforms the existing desmogging models in terms of various performance metrics.
