Changes in Mangrove Epifaunal Assemblages Caused by Forest Logging during Hunting of the Neotropical Cormorant (<i>Phalacrocorax brasilianus</i>) on the Colombian Pacific Coast

Although the importance of mangroves is clearly recognized around the world, these ecosystems are being strongly altered by the logging of their forests for multiple purposes. The Colombian Pacific coast is not an exception to this situation, and apart from the traditional logging of wood, the hunting of the Neotropical Cormorant or Pato-cuervo (Phalacrocorax brasilianus), an activity largely unknown but widespread in the region, is also causing the logging of great extensions of mangroves. The aim of this research was to determine if the assemblages of mollusks and crustaceans of these mangroves are being affected by the hunting of the cormorant. To answer this question, quantitative samplings were realized in four transects in logged and unlogged mangrove areas on the southwestern coast of the Colombian Pacific and diversity, equitability and dominance of macrofaunal assemblages of mangroves were calculated. The data show that although significant differences between diversity indices were not found, there were important differences in equitability (total J’: 0.55 in T1, 0.77 in T2, 0.46 in T3 and 0.65 in T4), specific dominance, and composition of species (T1: 11 species, T2: 13, T3: 9 and T4: 11) between logged and unlogged areas. Based on these results, although forest structure and interstitial salinity were different among transects, we conclude that the present practice of exploitation of the Neotropical Cormorant is affecting the epifaunal populations of mangroves, causing changes in the composition and dominance of species.

The environmental protection of tropical marine and coastal areas faces different challenges due to the diversity of aspects related to these areas, which include natural, social and economical issues. Despite these challenges, efforts for the protection of these areas are urgent nowadays because of the dramatical increase of human related threats like habitat destruction and population growth. Malaga Bay (MB) is a tectonic estuarine system located in Panama Bight (central region of the Colombian Pacific coast), which due to its origin shows important environmental characteristics of few sites in the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP) match. For these reasons, the government of Colombia declared in 2010, the bay’s marine area as a Marine National Natural Park in order to preserve its unique estuarine marine biodiversity. Despite this measure, MB presents several conditions that make environmental protection a very difficult task. In this paper, we present the geographical context, biodiversity and natural resources, environmental threats, the complexity of economic and social context, and the institutional and legal context of MB, to exemplify the difficulty that the protection of marine areas face in the TEP.

Modeling egg development of the pest Clavipalpus ursinus （Coleoptera： Melolonthidae） using a temperature-dependent approach

Predicting the population dynamics of insects in natural conditions is es- sential for their management or preservation, and temperature-dependent development models contribute to achieving this. In this research the effects of temperature and soil moisture content on egg development and hatching of Clavipalpus ursinus （Blanchard） were evaluated. The eggs were exposed to seven temperature treatments with averages of 7.2, 13.0, 15.5, 19.7, 20.6, 22.0 and 25.3~C, in combination with three soil moisture contents of 40%, 60% and 80%. A linear and two non-linear （Lactin and Briere） models were evaluated in order to determine the thermal requirements of this developmental stage. Temperature affected significantly the time of development and egg hatching, while no significant effect was observed for moisture content. Thermal requirements were set as： 7.2℃ for lower developmental threshold, 20.6℃ for optimum developmental threshold, 25.3℃ for maximum temperature and 344.83 degree-days for the thermal constant. The linear model described satisfactorily egg development at intermediate temperatures; nev- ertheless, a slightly better fit of the observed data was obtained with the Lactin model. Egg development took place inside a narrow range of temperatures. Consequently, an increment of soil temperature could generate a negative impact on the population size of this species or changes in its biological parameters.

The Locust (Tropidacris spp) within the Ejido “El Cuayo”

Tropidacris spp. represent the largest known group among acridoids. Their presence ranges from southeastern Mexico and has so far been confirmed only in tropical habitats. This publication seeks to highlight the current and potential challenges associated with their presence. For decades, the use of chemical insecticides has been the primary method for controlling locust populations, though these substances pose significant risks to human health and the environment. Recent research efforts are directed toward developing control methods that are less detrimental to both ecological and human health, such as biopesticides derived from pathogenic fungi, plant extracts, and strategically prescribed burns. Satellite surveillance enables the monitoring of the origination and progression of outbreaks to inform control strategy selection.

The Abundance of the Remaining Mammalian Fauna and the Impacts of Hunting in a Biodiversity Hotspot’s Hotspot in the Atlantic Forest of North-Eastern Brazil

Although hunting in the north-eastern Atlantic forest of Brazil began more than 500 years ago, no study to date has evaluated its impacts on the region’s mammalian fauna. For one year we carried out diurnal and nocturnal surveys using the Line Transect method in seven forest fragments varying from 7.32 ha to 469.76 ha, within a 4000 ha forest island archipelago, in Pernambuco State, Atlantic forest of northeastern Brazil. We calculated species density, population size, biomass and synergetic biomass, and recorded direct and indirect human impacts along the study transects. We recorded 44 mammalian species, of which 45.5% (n = 20) went extinct through hunting. The smallest forest fragment had the lowest richness, diversity, population size, and total biomass. It also had no synergetic biomass. The largest fragment had the highest richness, total density, and population size. There was a statistically significant relationship between fragment area and number of gunshots heard and suspended hunting platforms found;between population size and gunshots heard, suspended hunting platforms, free-roaming and feral dogs, and between total density and free-roaming and feral dogs. After more than 500 years of colonization hunting is still devastating, with larger fragments being linked to more hunters. Higher mammal abundances attracted more free-roaming and feral dogs, which have adapted to hunt wildlife on their own. Unless we protect every single forest fragment and create sustainable landscapes, we will not be able to save this hotspot’s hotspot.

An Emotion Model for Predator-Prey Bird Behavior

One of the main objectives of artificial intelligence lies in the simulation of the behavior of living organisms;emotions are a fundamental part of life, and they cannot be left aside when simulating behavior. In this research, software is developed that simulates the behavior of birds with different characteristics. The latter interacts by considering different stimuli from the environment (external), and the internal state of the subject (objectives). To achieve this, a model of birds in the role of prey and predators is developed that focuses on the study of the interaction between these organisms that exhibit specific behaviors in their environment. This project is a seminal work that aims to represent the emotions of birds, and the latter caused by stimuli from a dynamic environment.

Designing for well-Being: Using facial micro-expression analysis and EEG biosensor to evaluate human responses to 2D biophilically-driven geometries

This research explores the capacity of emerging technologies to enhance well-being. It involves the generation of 2D biophilically-driven geometries to represent human-response-oriented built environments and conducts inter and intra-individual analyses to assess human responses using a range of technologies within the realms of facial micro-expression analysis and EEG biosensor use. The outcomes of this analysis allow for the grading of these geometries in terms of emotional valences, meditation levels, and subjective preferences. These graded geometries can subsequently be employed in specific architectural contexts, such as interior decor, wallpapers, furniture surfaces, or other architectural and interior components. It is an interdisciplinary effort that underscores the importance of incorporating emerging technological means with human-response-oriented design approaches to foster built environments that promote well-being.

Morphometry and Mineral Content in the Seeds and Soil of Two Species of Argemone L.(Papaveraceae)in the Central Part of the Chihuahuan Desert

The genus Argemone L.(Papaveraceae)is found widely distributed in Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert(CD).Some species of this genus are of phytochemical or ethnobotanical *** are inedible plants considered as *** date they have not been broadly studied;thus,their ecology is,to our knowledge,*** present work was centered around carrying out a morphometric analysis and the determination of minerals in the soil and seeds of the wild populations of Argemone at sites belonging to two ecoregions of the CD in *** April 2021 and April 2022,seeds of Argemone spp.,and soil samples were collected at 10 sites of the *** seeds were selected under a randomized design,and weight,length,diameter,thickness,buoyancy,and mineral content were *** soil samples were obtained under the Mexican regulation NOM-021-RECNAT-2000,and determinations of mineral content,electrical conductivity,apparent density,and soluble anions were *** information obtained was grouped by variable,species,and place of *** statistical tests consisted of an ANOVA,Tukey means tests considering p≤0.05,and a Principal Components *** pleiacantha exhibited differences in terms of weight(F=54.79,p=0.001),length(F=90.83,p=0.001),thickness(F=104.89,p=0.001),and diameter(F=155.82,p=0.001),and the differences in Argemone mexicana were in weight(F=46.71,p=0.001),thickness(F=187.49,p=0.001),length(F=191.56,p=0.001),and diameter(F=215.83,p=0.001).The evaluated seeds reached their maximal imbibition velocity at 24 h of *** content of the micro-and macro-nutrients analyzed in the seeds and soil suggest a tight relation with the morphometric characteristics of the seeds.

Engineering Geological Investigations for the Foundations of Large Structures-Examples of a Concrete Dam and a long Bridge in Portugal

The safety of large structures requires adequate foundations, which implies a good knowledge of the geological and geotechnical conditions of the respective ground. In general, that is only possible through engineering geological studies which include proper site investigation techniques, adapted to the nature of the ground (rock mass or soil) and to the associated engineering problems. The paper illustrates the studies carried out for the design of the foundations of Ribeiradio 76 m high concrete gravity dam in a difficult rock mass and of Vasco da Gama Bridge, 13 km long, crossing the Tagus River in Lisbon, Portugal, through piles 75 m deep.
