Atlantic salmon(Salmo salar)fed a carbohydrate-rich diet exhibit suboptimal growth performance,along with other metabolic disturbances.It is well known that gut microbes play a pivotal role in influencing metabolism of the host,and these microbes can be modified by the diet.The main goal of the present study was to determine the effect of feeding graded levels of digestible carbohydrates to Atlantic salmon on the distal intestine digesta microbiota at 3 sampling times(i.e.,weeks 4,8 and 12),during a 12-week trial.A low carbohydrate-to-high protein diet(LC/Hp,0%wheat starch),a medium carbohydrate-tomedium protein diet(MC/Mp,15%wheat starch)or a high carbohydrate-to-low protein diet(HC/Lp,30%wheat starch)was fed to triplicate fish tanks(27 to 28 fish per tank).We performed an in-depth characterization of the distal intestine digesta microbiota.Further,growth parameters,liver histology and the expression of genes involved in hepatic neolipogenesis in fish were measured.Fish fed a HC/Lp diet showed greater hepatosomatic and viscerosomatic indexes(p=0.026 and p=0.018,respectively),lower final weight(p=0.005),weight gain(p=0.003),feed efficiency(p=0.033)and growth rate(p=0.003)compared with fish fed the LC/Hp diet.Further,feeding salmon a high digestible carbohydrate diet caused greater lipid vacuolization,steatosis index(p=0.007)and expression of fatty acid synthase(fas)and delta-6 fatty acyl desaturase(d6fad)(p=0.001 and p=0.001,respectively)in the liver compared with fish fed the LC/Hp diet.Although,the major impact of feeding a carbohydrate-rich diet to Atlantic salmon in beta diversity of distal intestine digesta microbiota was observed at week 4(HC/Lp vs MC/Mp and HC/Lp vs LC/Hp;p=0.007 and p=0.008,respectively)and week 8(HC/Lp vs MC/Mp;p=0.04),no differences between experimental groups were detected after 12 weeks of feeding.Finally,at the end of the trial,there was a negative correlation between lactic acid bacteria(LAB)members,including Leuconostoc and Lactobacillus,with hepatic steatosis level,the hepatosomat

Synthetic varieties(SVs)are populations generated by randomly mating their parents.They are a good alternative for low-input farmers who grow onions,maize,and other allogamous crops since the seed produced by a SV does not change from one generation to the next.Although SV progenitors are commonly pure lines,in this case a synthetic(Syn_(TC))whose parents are t three-way line crosses,a very common type of maize hybrid grown in Mexico,is studied.The aim was to develop a general and exact equation for the inbreeding coefficient of a Syn_(TC)eF_(m)^(f)Syn_(TC)T because of its relationship with the mean of economically important traits.This objective arose due to the need for a more advanced study in terms of determining whether F_(m)^(f)Syn_(TC)can be applied specifically and accurately for any number of parents(t),plants per parent(m)and inbreeding coefficient(IC)of the initial lines(F_(L)).A formula for the IC of the Syn_(TC)was derived that,given any values of F_(L)(0≤F_(L)≤1)and t,is specific for any value of m,not just for“large”numbers associated with the context in which the Hardy-Weinberg law is stated.It was found that F_(m)^(f)Syn_(TC)is very sensitive to changes in m when m is not greater than eight,after which it tends to stabilize very quickly.In summary,unlike previously derived formulas,F_(m)^(f)Syn_(TC)is exact for any values of t,m and F_(L).

The pancreaticoduodenectomy(pD) procedure may lead to pancreatic exocrine and endocrine insufficiency.There are several types of reconstruction for this kind of operation.pancreaticogastrostomy(pG) was introduced to reduce the rate of postoperative pancreatic fistula.Although some randomized control trials have shown no differences regarding pancreatic leakage between pG and pancreaticojejunostomy(pJ),recently some reports reveal benefits from the pG over the pJ.Some surgeons concern about the performing of the pG and inactivation of pancreatic enzymes being in contact with the gastric juice,and the detrimental results over the exocrine pancreatic function.The pancreatic exocrine function can be measured with direct and indirect tests.Direct tests have the highest sensitivity and specificity for detection of exocrine insufficiency but require tube placement.Among the tubeless indirect tests,the van de Kamer stool fat analysis remains the standard to diagnose fat malabsorption.The patient compliance and time consuming makes it not so suitable for its clinical use.Fecal immunoreactive elastase test is employed for screening of exocrine insufficiency,is not cumbersome,and has been used to study pancreatic function after resection.We analyze the FE1 levels in our patients after the pD with two types of reconstruction,pG and pJ,and we discuss some considerations about the pancreaticointestinal drainage method after pancreaticoduodenectomy.

Strongly influenced by the advances in the semiconductor industry,the miniaturization and integration of optical circuits into smaller devices has stimulated considerable research efforts in recent decades.Among other structures,integrated interferometers play a prominent role in the development of photonic devices for on-chip applications ranging from optical communication networks to point-of-care analysis instruments.However,it has been a longstanding challenge to design extremely short interferometer schemes,as long interaction lengths are typically required for a complete modulation transition.Several approaches,including novel materials or sophisticated configurations,have been proposed to overcome some of these size limitations but at the expense of increasing fabrication complexity and cost.Here,we demonstrate for the first time slow light bimodal interferometric behaviour in an integrated single-channel one-dimensional photonic crystal.The proposed structure supports two electromagnetic modes of the same polarization that exhibit a large group velocity difference.Specifically,an over 20-fold reduction in the higher-order-mode group velocity is experimentally shown on a straightforward all-dielectric bimodal structure,leading to a remarkable optical path reduction compared to other conventional interferometers.Moreover,we experimentally demonstrate the significant performance improvement provided by the proposed bimodal photonic crystal interferometer in the creation of an ultra-compact optical modulator and a highly sensitive photonic sensor.

Objective:To determine larvicidal activity of the essential oil,hydrolat and botanical extracts derived from leaves ol pseudocalymma alliaceum an mosquito larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus.Methods:Groups of twenty lanae were used in the larvicidal assays.The mortality,relative growth rate,the larval and pupal duration and viability was estimated.The essential oil was analyzed by solid phase microextraction using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.Results:Essential oil at 800 ppm showed larvicidal activity at 24 h with lethal values of LC_(50) and LC_(90) of 267.33 and 493.63 ppm.The hvdrolat at 20% and 10% on 2nd stage larvae showed 100%effectiveness after 24 h.The aqueous extract at 10% had a relative growth index of 0.***.while the ethanolic and methanolic extract obtained values of 0.76 and 0.70 and control reached 0.99.Larvae treated with 10% of methanol,ethanol and aqueous extract showed a reduction in larval duration of 5.00,2.20 and 4.35 days;ethanol extract at 1% provoke decrease of 2.40 days in the development and exhibited an increment of 3.30 days when treated with 0.01%.Aqueous,ethanol and methanol extracts at 10%reduced in 6.15,3.42 and 5.57 days pupal development.The main compounds were diallyl disulfide(50.05%),diallyl sulfide(11.77%) and disulfide di-2-propenyl(10.37%).Conclusions:The study demonstrated for the first time,the larvicidal activity of the essential oil and hydrolat of pseudocalymma alliaceum:aqueous,ethanol and methanol extracts inhibited the normal growth and development of mosquito larvae,prolonging and delaying larval and pupal duration.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Lactobacillus acidophilus（LAC）, exogenous enzymes of ZAD（exogenous enzyme preparation） or their combination on feed conversion, and dressing of rabbits fed different treatments of sugarcane bagasse（SCB）. Five rations were allotted randomly to five groups of New-Zealand White（NZW） rabbits（n=10） with initial live body weight of（838±42.4） g and 5 weeks of age. Rabbits were fed on diets with different sources of fiber as follows,（i） a control diet composed of 100% berseem hay and 0% SCB,（ii） 50% berseem hay and 50% untreated SCB（USCB）,（iii） 50% berseem hay and 50% SCB treated with L. acidophilus（LAC）,（iv） 50% berseem hay and 50% SCB treated with ZAD（ZAD）, and（v） 50% berseem hay and 50% SCB treated with a combination of LAC＋ZAD（LZ）. Treatments of SCB with L. acidophilus, ZAD and LAC＋ZAD had the highest feed conversion ratio than both USCB and control. The dressing percentage of rabbits that fed the LAC and LZ diets was higher（p〈0.05） compared with that in the other groups. performance index（pI） for LAC group was improved（p〈0.05） compared to that for the other groups; however, pI for USCB group was the lowest（p〈0.05）. It could be concluded that treating SCB with L. acidophilus, exogenous enzymes of ZAD or their combination improved feed conversion and performance with more positive effects with L. acidophilus than the other treatments.

The reliability optimization process in earthquake engineering requires that the expected present value of the total cost is minimized, including the initial cost as well as the damage costs caused by earthquakes, which include indirect costs. One of these costs is concerned with how much society is willing to invest for preserving human life. Ethical principles, on which to base the assessment of this cost, are presented and discussed in this work. Individual and social values are analyzed. Finally, an optimal seismic design coefficient with the results obtained is calculated for a site with low seismicity.

Fibrosing cholestatic hepatitis(FCH) is a variant of viral hepatitis reported in hepatitis B virus or hepatitis C virus infected liver,renal or bone transplantation recipients and in leukemia and lymphoma patients after conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy.FCH constitutes a well-described form of fulminant hepatitis having extensive fibrosis and severe cholestasis as its most characteristic pathological findings.Here,we report a case of a 49-year-old patient diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer who developed this condition following conventional chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression.This is the first reported case in the literature of FCH after conventional chemotherapy for a solid tumor.In addition to a detailed report of the case,a physiopathological examination of this potentially life-threatening condition and its treatment options are discussed.
