Anthropometric Analysis of the Upper Eyelid and Eyebrow in Patients Attended by the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Service of the Hospital Central Sur De Petróleos Mexicanos

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the most frequently performed surgeries by plastic surgeons worldwide. A prospective observational study was conducted to describe the anthropometric measurements of the upper eyelid and eyebrow in a Mexican population. The researcher measured the anthropometry of the eyelids and eyebrows to establish the diagnosis and surgical plan according to the checklist created and applied by the plastic and reconstructive surgery service. In anatomical position with a caliper instrument, the marginal reflex distance (MRD1), the tarsal thickness, the length of the vertical and horizontal slit, and finally the distance at which the external canthus is located with respect to the internal canthus were measured in millimeters. For the anthropometry of the eyebrows, the distance from the eyebrows to the hairline, the position in millimeters of the orbital rim with respect to the eyebrow, and the angle of its apex were measured. A sample of 210 patients was obtained, of which 65 were male and 145 females, divided by age groups. It was observed that in the three age groups, females presented a vertical palpebral fissure with a higher mean than males. Similar is the case of tarsal thickness, in which the difference was significantly greater in the female of the three age groups. On the other hand, it was observed that the horizontal slit in males was higher than that of females, while the MDR1 was similar in both sexes. Finally, it was identified that in the group of 41 to 50 years old significant decreases are observed both in the vertical cleft, tarsal thickness and the position of the external canthus compared to the group of 20 to 30 years old, this is due to the aging process. When evaluating the anthropometrics of the eyebrows, a greater distance from the trichion to the eyebrow was observed in males than in females, in contrast to the position of the eyebrow with respect to the supraorbital rim and its apex, in which it was shown that in females there is a greater distance. The genus Argemone L.(Papaveraceae)is found widely distributed in Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert(CD).Some species of this genus are of phytochemical or ethnobotanical interest.They are inedible plants considered as scrubs.To date they have not been broadly studied;thus,their ecology is,to our knowledge,unknown.The present work was centered around carrying out a morphometric analysis and the determination of minerals in the soil and seeds of the wild populations of Argemone at sites belonging to two ecoregions of the CD in Mexico.In April 2021 and April 2022,seeds of Argemone spp.,and soil samples were collected at 10 sites of the CD.The seeds were selected under a randomized design,and weight,length,diameter,thickness,buoyancy,and mineral content were determined.The soil samples were obtained under the Mexican regulation NOM-021-RECNAT-2000,and determinations of mineral content,electrical conductivity,apparent density,and soluble anions were performed.The information obtained was grouped by variable,species,and place of precedence.The statistical tests consisted of an ANOVA,Tukey means tests considering p≤0.05,and a Principal Components Analysis.Argemone pleiacantha exhibited differences in terms of weight(F=54.79,p=0.001),length(F=90.83,p=0.001),thickness(F=104.89,p=0.001),and diameter(F=155.82,p=0.001),and the differences in Argemone mexicana were in weight(F=46.71,p=0.001),thickness(F=187.49,p=0.001),length(F=191.56,p=0.001),and diameter(F=215.83,p=0.001).The evaluated seeds reached their maximal imbibition velocity at 24 h of evaluation.The content of the micro-and macro-nutrients analyzed in the seeds and soil suggest a tight relation with the morphometric characteristics of the seeds.

Surgical Complications in Breast Reconstruction: Assessment and Associations

Introduction: Breast cancer represents a pathology that generates catastrophic impact and has recently increased its incidence and survival due to timely diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, improving the quality of life of cancer survivors has become a priority, offering reconstructive procedures that reduce complications, costs, hospital stay, and optimize resources. Material and methods: 264 patients reconstructed with autologous tissue (TRAM flap and latissimus dorsi) and alloplastic (breast tissue expander—breast implant and direct breast implant) were included. Variables such as demographic, anthropometric, and histologic type were collected. Results: 62% were reconstructed through the use of alloplastics and 38% with autologous tissue. The risk factors related to a greater probability of immediate postoperative complications (surgical site infection, surgical wound dehiscence and reconstruction failure) were obesity (OR: 2.1, CI: 1.5 - 2.7), preoperative radiation (OR: 1.89, CI: 1.75 - 1.92), arterial hypertension (OR: 1.2), Diabetes Mellitus (OR: 1.78) and smoking (OR: 1.31). Conclusions: The reconstructive process is complex and influenced by patient factors, surgeon experience and the hospital center. However, when choosing the reconstructive strategy, risk factors present in each patient must be considered, since radiation and obesity present a greater probability of postoperative complications.

Anthropometric Breast Measurements: Analysis of the Average Breast in the Mexican Female Population

Introduction: The elements and perception of beauty vary between populations around the world. To obtain better results, surgical techniques should be planned based on anthropometric characteristics of the race, location, and body mass index (BMI). Objectives: To determine which are the standard measurements and anatomical proportions of the breast in a healthy Mexican women population. Materials and Methods: Female Mexican volunteers between 20 and 60 years of age, without any history of breast illness or breast surgery were studied. Demographic information and standard breast anthropometric measurements were collected manually by one of the authors. For the statistical analysis a Student-T test was performed, and the Pearson correlation coefficient was obtained using the latest version of SPSS software. Results: 78 volunteers were included in the analysis. Mean height, weight and BMI were 1.6 m, 68.9 Kg, and 26.6 Kg/m2 respectively. The mean anthropometric values found were: Supra Sternal notch to nipple distance (SSN:N) 22 cm, Breast volume (BV) 372.6 cm3, Upper breast pole length (UBPL) 11 cm, Lower Breast Pole length (LBPL) 7.7 cm, Midline to Nipple distance (ML:N) 10.2 cm, Transverse diameter of the Nipple areola complex (NAC-T) 4.1 cm, Height of the Nipple Areola Complex (NAC-H) 4.1 cm, Base of the breast (BB) 13.4 cm, Upper Pole to Lower Pole Ratio (UPP:LPP) 58.9:41.1. A statistically significant difference between Right and left breast was not found. The UPP/ LPP ratio in our population is far different from what is considered internationally aesthetic (45:55). A positive correlation was found between weight/ BMI and SSN:N, BV, BB, ML:N and LBPL. Also between age and SSN:N, LBPL, BV and BB. Conclusion: This study sets the Anthropometric grounds in Mexican population for an objective individual patient analysis and comparison with the female population of this and other nations.

Designing for well-Being: Using facial micro-expression analysis and EEG biosensor to evaluate human responses to 2D biophilically-driven geometries

This research explores the capacity of emerging technologies to enhance well-being. It involves the generation of 2D biophilically-driven geometries to represent human-response-oriented built environments and conducts inter and intra-individual analyses to assess human responses using a range of technologies within the realms of facial micro-expression analysis and EEG biosensor use. The outcomes of this analysis allow for the grading of these geometries in terms of emotional valences, meditation levels, and subjective preferences. These graded geometries can subsequently be employed in specific architectural contexts, such as interior decor, wallpapers, furniture surfaces, or other architectural and interior components. It is an interdisciplinary effort that underscores the importance of incorporating emerging technological means with human-response-oriented design approaches to foster built environments that promote well-being.

Virtual Transmission Solution Based on Battery Energy Storage Systems to Boost Transmission Capacity

The increasing penetration of variable renewable energy(VRE)generation along with the decommissioning of conventional power plants in Chile,has raised several operational challenges in the Chilean National Power Grid(NPG),including transmission congestion and VRE curtailment.To mitigate these limitations,an innovative virtual transmission solution based on battery energy storage systems(BESSs),known as grid booster(GB),has been proposed to increase the capacity of the main 500 kV corridor of the NPG.This paper analyzes the dynamic performance of the GB using a wide-area electromagnetic transient(EMT)model of the NPG.The GB project,composed of two 500 MVA BESS units at each extreme of the 500 kV corridor,allows increasing the transmission capacity for 15 min during N-1 contingencies,overcoming transmission limitations under normal operation conditions while maintaining system stability during faults.The dynamic behavior of the GB is also analyzed to control power flow as well as voltage stability.The results show that the GB is an effective solution to allow greater penetration of VRE generation while maintaining system stability in the NPG.

Grouping tree species to estimate basal area increment in temperate multispecies forests in Durango,Mexico

Multispecies forests have received increased scientific attention,driven by the hypothesis that biodiversity improves ecological resilience.However,a greater species diversity presents challenges for forest management and research.Our study aims to develop basal area growth models for tree species cohorts.The analysis is based on a dataset of 423 permanent plots(2,500 m^(2))located in temperate forests in Durango,Mexico.First,we define tree species cohorts based on individual and neighborhood-based variables using a combination of principal component and cluster analyses.Then,we estimate the basal area increment of each cohort through the generalized additive model to describe the effect of tree size,competition,stand density and site quality.The principal component and cluster analyses assign a total of 37 tree species to eight cohorts that differed primarily with regard to the distribution of tree size and vertical position within the community.The generalized additive models provide satisfactory estimates of tree growth for the species cohorts,explaining between 19 and 53 percent of the total variation of basal area increment,and highlight the following results:i)most cohorts show a"rise-and-fall"effect of tree size on tree growth;ii)surprisingly,the competition index"basal area of larger trees"had showed a positive effect in four of the eight cohorts;iii)stand density had a negative effect on basal area increment,though the effect was minor in medium-and high-density stands,and iv)basal area growth was positively correlated with site quality except for an oak cohort.The developed species cohorts and growth models provide insight into their particular ecological features and growth patterns that may support the development of sustainable management strategies for temperate multispecies forests.

Isolation of Microorganisms According to Burned Body Surface: Experience in a Reference Center in Mexico City

Background: Burns is one of the most common and severe forms of trauma, as they cause an alteration in the protective barrier exerted by the skin. The objective of this work is to describe the bacterial pathogens that cause infections in the different body segments as well as to know the susceptibility in patients with burns during a period of two years. Methods: This study was conducted over a period of 2 years, January 2017 to January 2019. The analysis of the isolated microbiological agents was obtained from culture samples in different anatomic areas. The variables were measured in the general population and also by groups, considering: age, sex, TBSA with Wallace's rule of nine, anatomic area affected, type of burn, depth of burn, microorganism reported in cultures, antibiotics empirically administered and mortality rate. Results: Regardless of the anatomical segment studied, the most frequently isolated microorganism was Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Conclusions: Identification of the microorganisms that cause infection reduces the hospital stay, as well as the admission to the ICU. A fundamental research guideline is to pay more attention to the post-burn consequences, and the sequelae and functional limitations that it entails, since few since few studies focus on this aspect.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors:Are tumors smaller than 2 cm truly indolent?

BACKGROUND Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors(PNETs)are relatively rare but rank as the second most common pancreatic neoplasm.They can be functional,causing early metabolic disturbances due to hormone secretion,or non-functional and diagnosed later based on tumor size-related symptoms.Recent diagnoses of PNETs under 2 cm in size have sparked debates about their management;some practitioners advocate for surgical removal and others suggest observation due to the tumors’lower potential for malignancy.However,it is unclear whether managing these small tumors expectantly is truly safe.AIM To evaluate poor prognostic factors in PNETs based on tumor size(>2 cm or<2 cm)in surgically treated patients.METHODS This cohort study included 64 patients with PNETs who underwent surgical resection between 2006 and 2019 at a high-complexity reference hospital in Medellín,Colombia.To assess patient survival,quarterly follow-ups were conducted during the first year after surgery,followed by semi-annual con-sultations at the hospital's hepatobiliary surgery department.Qualitative variables were described using absolute and relative frequencies,and quantitative variables were expressed using measures of central tendency and their corresponding measures of dispersion.RESULTS The presence of lymph node involvement,neural involvement,and lymphovascular invasion were all associated with an increased risk of mortality,with hazard ratios of 5.68(95%CI:1.26–25.61,P=0.024),6.44(95%CI:1.43–28.93,P=0.015),and 24.87(95%CI:2.98–207.19,P=0.003),respectively.Neural involvement and lymphovascular invasion were present in tumors smaller than 2 cm in diameter and those larger than 2 cm in diameter.The recurrence rates between the two tumor groups were furthermore similar:18.2%for tumors smaller than 2 cm and 21.4%for tumors larger than 2 cm.Patient survival was additionally comparable between the two tumor groups.CONCLUSION Tumor size does not dictate prognosis;lymph node and lymphovascular involvement affect mortality,which high-lights that histopath

Upper Blepharoplasty Scar and Patient Satisfaction Evaluation in a Plastic Surgery Center in Mexico

Background: Eyes are one of the most important facial features, their appearance being associated with state of mind, age and beauty. Therefore, upper blepharoplasty is one of the most common procedures performed in plastic surgery. Standardized tools allow for measurement of outcomes through patient satisfaction and surgeon experience. Objectives: Our objective was to measure the satisfaction index and scar quality of patients who underwent upper blepharoplasty using the Patient-reported Outcome Measure Questionnaire (PROM-Q) and Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS). Methods: A retrospective review of patients that underwent upper blepharoplasty in our institution was performed. We included those with a preoperative anthropometric analysis, standardized incision markings (developed in our center), same operative technique and a 3-month postoperative evaluation with PROM-Q and POSAS. The sample for this study consists of 67 patients, all of them operated between January 1 2019 and June 30 2019 at the Department of Plastic Surgery, South Central High Specialty Hospital, Pemex, Mexico City, Mexico. Results: A total of 67 patients were included, 73% female and 27% male. The most frequent indication for surgery was functional visual symptoms. The index of PROM-Q at 3 months demonstrated an increased satisfaction above 90%, and the evaluation with POSAS reported an almost imperceptible scar. Conclusion: Evaluating outcomes with objective tools provides data useful to improve the surgical protocols of patients subjecting to aesthetic procedures.
