Giant flares(GFs)are unusual bursts from soft gamma-ray repeaters(SGRs)that release an enormous amount of energy in a fraction of a *** afterglow emission of these SGR-GFs or GF candidates is a highly beneficial means of discerning their composition,relativistic speed and emission *** 200415A is a recent GF candidate observed in a direction coincident with the nearby Sculptor galaxy at 3.5 *** this work,we searched for transient gamma-ray emission in past observations by Fermi-LAT in the direction of GRB *** observations confirm that GRB 200415A is observed as a transient GeV source only once.A pure pair-plasma fireball cannot provide the required energy for the interpretation of GeV afterglow emission and a baryonic poor outflow is additionally needed to explain the afterglow emission.A baryonic rich outflow is also viable,as it can explain the variability and observed quasi-thermal spectrum of the prompt emission if dissipation is happening below the photosphere via internal *** the peak energy(Ep)of the time-resolved prompt emission spectra and their fluxes(Fp),we found a correlation between Ep and Fp or isotropic luminosity Liso for GRB *** supports the intrinsic nature of Ep-Liso correlation found in SGRs-GFs,hence favoring a baryonic poor *** results also indicate a different mechanism at work during the initial spike,and that the evolution of the prompt emission spectral properties in this outflow would be intrinsically due to the injection process.

Assessment of Man-made and Natural Hazards in the Surroundings of Hydropower Projects under construction in the Beas Valley of Northwestern Himalaya

Mountain ecosystem, on the earth, has plenty of natural resources. In Himachal Pradesh all the rivers are snowfed and therefore rich in water resources. These resources have been supporting enough for the generation of electricity through introducing hydropower projects since the last decade However, every developmental activity has its own negative impacts on the surrounding environment. Due to the fragile nature of topography and delicacy of ecology of the Himalaya, it results in lot of disturbances because of high degree of human interferences like construction of major hydropower projects. The increased extent of geological hazards, such as landslides, rock fall and soil erosion, have mainly due to alike developmental interventions in the natural ecosystem. So understanding and analysing such impacts of the hydropower projects have mainly been on the environment in various forms but natural hazards have been frequent ones. The present study, therefore, focuses mainly on the Parbati Stage II （800 MW） and the Parbati Stage III （520 MW） hydropower projects; both of which fall within the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. Based on the perception survey of the local communities, the existing land use pattern, status of total acquired land of the residents by hydropower projects, frequent natural hazards and resultant loss to the local communities due to upcoming construction of hydropower projects surrounding to the Parbati Stage II and III have been analysed in the paper. Also, the preventive measures to mitigate these adverse impacts have been suggested to strengthen these projects in eco-friendly manner in the mountain context.

Isolation and characterization of Nickel Uptake by Nickel Resistant Bacterial Isolate (NiRBI)

Objective Bioremediation technology has gained importance because microbes could be the convenient source of bio-absorption/bioaccumulation of metals from effluent streams. Methods The nickel-resistant bacterial isolates （NiRBI） were selected from various bacterial isolates from industrial effluent and grown in nutrient broth containing different concentrations of nickel sulfate （0.3-3.0 mmol/L） and their capability of accumulating metal from the medium. Results Well-defined growth of NiRBI was observed in the medium containing up to 2.5 mmol/L of nickel. The isolate was identified using 16S rRNA and closely related to Pseudomonas fragi. Maximum accumulation of nickel （0.59 mg/g dry weight of bacterial cells） was observed when NiRBI was grown in media containing 2 mmol/L of nickel. The protein profile of the NiRBI cellular extract by SDS-PAGE showed two metal stress-induced proteins of molecular weight 48 KD and 18 KD with a simultaneous down regulation of four proteins of 46.7 KD, 42.2 KD, 19.7 KD, and 4.0 KD. conclusion 48 KD and 18 KD proteins play a role in metal resistance mechanism by NiRBI.

combination immunotherapy with Survivin and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone fusion protein in murine breast cancer model

AIM To investigate the therapeutic potential of two recombinant proteins, Survivin and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) fusion protein [LHRH(6 leu)-LTB] for immunotherapy of breast *** Murine 4 T-1 breast cancer model was used to evaluate the efficacy of recombinant proteins in vivo. Twenty four Balb/c mice were divided into 4 groups of 6 mice each. Recombinant Survivin and LHRH fusion protein, alone or in combination, were administered along with immunomodulator Mycobacterium indicus pranii (MIP) in Balb/c mice. Unimmunized or control group mice were administered with phosphate buffer saline. Each group was then challenged with syngeneic 4 T-1 cells to induce the growth of breast tumor. Tumor growth was monitored to evaluate the efficacy of immune-response in preventing the growth of cancer *** Preventive immunization with 20 μg recombinant Survivin and MIP was effective in suppressing growth of 4 T-1 mouse model of breast cancer (P = 0.04) but 50 μg dose was ineffective in suppressing tumor growth. However, combination of Survivin and LHRH fusion protein was more effective in suppressing tumor growth (P = 0.02) as well as metastasis in vivo in comparison to LHRH fusion protein as vaccine antigen *** Recombinant Survivin and MIP suppress tumor growth significantly. combining LHRH fusion protein with Survivin and MIP enhances tumor suppressive effects marginally which provides evidence for recombinant Survivin and LHRH fusion protein as candidates for translating the combination cancer immunotherapy approaches.

The extraction behavior of platinum(Ⅳ) was studied with N-n-octylaniline as a function of different parameters,such as pH,concentrations of weak acids,mineral acids,reagents and elution time.A selective method was developed for the extraction chromatographic studies of platinum(Ⅳ) and its separation from several metal ions with N-n-octylaniline(liquid anion exchanger) as a stationary phase on silica *** quantitative extraction of platinum(Ⅳ) was observed with 0.067 mol/L N-n-octylaniline and 0.015 mol/L ascorbic acid at pH *** ion was stripped from the column with water and determined spectrophotometrically with stannous chloride *** proposed method is free from the interference of a large number of cations and ***(Ⅳ) was separated from pharmaceutical preparations,alloys and synthetic *** separation scheme was developed for platinum(Ⅳ),palladium(Ⅱ) and gold(Ⅲ).The log-log plot of N-n-octylaniline concentration versus the distribution ratio indicates that the probable extracted species is [RR′NH+2 ]· Pt(c6H7O6)-3.

Land use and land cover changes that occurred during the period from 1991 to 2001 in the Jahlma watershed of the Lahaul valley,a cold desert region of the northwestern Himalaya,were evaluated using land use data and visual interpretation of IRS Satellite imageries. The results revealed that out of the six major land use forms within the watershed,land areas under agriculture,kitchen garden and settlement land were found increased,whereas a declining trend was recorded in areas under grassland,barren land and Salix plantation. The cultivated land within the watershed increased from 54.87 % (total of agriculture land,kitchen garden,grassland,barren land,Salix plantation and residential area) in 1991 to 56.89 % in 2001,corresponding to an expansion of 4.41 ha. On the other hand,the areas of grassland decreased from 31.41 % in 1991 to 29.81 % in 2001. Such a dramatic land use and land cover changes taking place within the 33 km2 watershed area in a single decade clearly indicates the prevailing danger of land degradation and environmental deterioration in the region.

Impact of Variegated Temperature, cO<SUB>2</SUB>and Relative Humidity on Survival and Development of Beet Armyworm <i>Spodoptera exigua</i>(Hubner) under controlled Growth chamber

climate change will have a noteworthy bearing on survival, development, and population dynamics of insect pests. Therefore, we contemplated the survival and development of beet army worm, Spodoptera exigua under different temperatures, (15°c, 25°c, 35°c, and 45°c), cO2 (350, 550, 750 ppm) and relative humidity (55%, 65%, 75% and 85%) regimes. Maximum larval and pupal weights were recorded in insects reared at 25°c. The growth of S. exigua was faster at 35°c (larval period 7.4 days and pupal period 4.5 days) than at lower temperatures. At 15°c, the larval period was extended for 61.4 days and there was no adult emergence from the pupae till 90 days. The S. exigua hatchling was absent at 45°c. The larval survival ranged from 31.6% - 57.2%, maximum survival was recorded at 25°c, and minimum at 45°c. The maximum (84.27%) and minimum adult emergence were recorded in insects reared at 25°c and 35°c respectively. Maximum fecundity (384.3 eggs/female) and egg viability (51.97%) were recorded in insects reared at 25°c. Larval and pupal periods increased with an increase in cO2 concentration. The highest pupal weights (128.6 mg/larva) were recorded at 550 ppm. The highest larval survival (73.50%) was recorded at 550 ppm and minimum (37.00%) at 750 ppm cO2. Fecundity was the highest in insects reared at 550 ppm cO2 (657.
