Role of nanomaterials in improving the functionality of probiotics; integration of nanotechnology onto micro-structured platforms

There is a growing interest in the production of probiotics (PRO) enriched food and pharmaceutical products as personalized nutrition and/or medicines. Due to the limitations associated with PRO such as their survival and targeted delivery in food/gastrointestinal matrices, it is necessary to introduce the next-generation PRO (NGPs). Combined formulation of PRO and nanomaterials (NMs) as a promising progress in nano-biotechnology has interesting potential applications. These NMs as proper carrier or coating agents have pivotal importance in food/drug applications of NGPs. There are several case studies related to the unique and promising capabilities of NMs for targeted delivery, long-term viability and stability of PRO, as well as potent infection control by these essential microorganisms and engineering of the smart constructs with enhanced functionalities using these innovative valuable platforms. Furthermore, surface to volume ratio of the produced constructs and adhesion of the PRO onto the intestinal epithelial mucus can be improved using novel NMs. Although integration of PRO with nanostructured platforms has promising beneficial effects, there are some limitations such as potential inhibitory effect of NMs on metabolic activity of PRO that needs to be considered. Furthermore, potential interactions between NMs and food components, their potential side effects on gut hemostasis, as well as concerns about their toxicity and biosafety are important issues in this context. This review sought to present and discuss the most recent cutting-edge publications associated with capabilities of NMs to improve crucial functionalities of the NGPs for their essential and innovative applications.

Enhanced viability and improved in situ antibacterial activity of the probiotic LAB microencapsulated layer-by-layer in alginate beads coated with nisin

In the present study, a layer-by-layer technique was used to prepare alginate-nisin (Alg-N) as coating layer to encapsulate a potential probiotic-protective lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolate in order to improve its both survival and antibacterial activities in situ. The isolate was identified as Pediococcus acidilactici according to the sequencing results of the PCR products. The mean size of Alg and Alg-N microcapsules was also equal to 762.63 and 501.77 mu m, respectively based on the results of field emission scanning electron microscopy. In accordance with the zeta potential data, the Alg-N surrounding layer was confirmed. Furthermore, the Fourier transform infrared findings revealed the adsorption of nisin on the Alg beads. The antibacterial activity of the produced microcapsule on Staphylococcus aureus (100% inhibition) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than that of the other foodborne bacteria studied. In addition, enhanced viability of the microencapsulated LAB in simulated gastrointestinal conditions and flavored milk, as well as its improved in situ inhibitory effect on S. aureus were verified.

Free vibration and transient response of double curved beams connected by intermediate straight beams

This paper investigates the free vibration and transient response of interconnected structures including double curved beams and intermediate straight beams,which are all constructed from functionally graded porous(FGP) materials. The strain potential and kinetic energies of each beam along with the work done by the external force are calculated. Additionally, a higher-order beam element is introduced to derive stiffness and mass matrices, along with the force vector. The curved and straight beams are discretized, and their assembled stiffness, mass matrices, and force vectors, are *** conditions at the joints are used to derive the total matrices of the entire structure. Subsequently, the natural frequencies and transient response of the system are determined. The accuracy of the mathematical model and the self-developed computer program is validated through the comparison of the obtained results with those of the existing literature and commercial software ANSYS, demonstrating excellent ***, a comprehensive study is conducted to investigate the effects of various parameters on the free vibration and transient response of the considered structure.

Effect of extrusion parameters on degradation of magnesium alloys for bioimplant applications:A review

Magnesium alloys,as a new generation temporary biomaterial,deserve the desirable biocompatibility and biodegradability,and also contribute to the repair of the damaged bone ***,they do not possess the required corrosion resistance in human body *** mechanical workings,such as extrusion,influence both the mechanical properties and bio-corrosion behavior of magnesium *** review aims to gather information on how the extrusion parameters(extrusion ratio and temperature)influence the bio-corrosion performances of magnesium *** effects are mainly ascribed to the alteration of extruded alloy microstructure,including final grain size and uniformity of grains,texture,and the size,distribution and volume fraction of the second *** recrystallization and grain refinement during extrusion provide a more homogeneous microstructure and cause the formation of basal texture,resulting in improved strength and corrosion resistance of magnesium *** temperature and extrusion ratio are reported as the influential factors in the *** reports reveal that the increase in extrusion ratio and/or the reduction in extrusion temperature cause a decrease in the final grain size,leading to intensification of basal texture,in parallel side of the samples with extrusion line,and to lower volume fraction and size of precipitates in magnesium *** all lead to improving the bio-corrosion resistance of the magnesium alloy implants.

Non-harmonic resonance of viscoelastic structures subjected to time-dependent exponentially decreasing transverse distributed loads

In this paper,the non-harmonic resonance of Bernoulli viscoelastic beams,Kirchhoff viscoelastic plates,Timoshenko viscoelastic beams,and Mindlin viscoelastic plates subjected to time-dependent exponentially decreasing transverse distributed load is investigated for the first *** constitutive equations are expressed utilizing Boltzmann integral law with a constant bulk *** displacement vector is approximated by employing the separation of variables *** Laplace transformation is used to transfer equations from the time domain to the Laplace domain and vice *** novel point of the proposed method is to express,prove and calculate the critical time in which the displacement will be several times the displacement at time *** addition,this new method calculates the maximum deflection at the critical time,explicitly and exactly,without any need to follow the time-displacement curve with a low computational ***,the proposed method introduces the critical range of time so that the responses are greater than the responses at time zero.

Corrosion Behaviors of Two Types of Commercial Stainless Steel after Plastic Deformation

Cross-focusing of two chirped Gaussian laser beams and THz wave generation in plasmas of multi-ion species under a weakly relativistic and ponderomotive regime

The generation of terahertz(THz)waves via the beating of two high-intensity chirped Gaussian lasers in a multi-ion-species plasma is numerically studied by taking into account the weak relativistic and ponderomotive regime of *** coupled differential equations for beamwidth parameters are extracted by introducing the dielectric function of such plasma and using WKB and paraxial ray *** amplitude of THz radiation at beat frequency resulting from the nonlinear current density induced by the beat ponderomotive force of the cross-focusing of beams was *** impacts of the chirp frequency parameter,initial laser intensity and initial ionic species density(specifically,the presence of singly and doubly charged ions)in the plasma on THz generation were *** numerical results reveal that THz radiation generation strongly depends on the chirp frequency parameter.A specific range of chirp frequencies exists for self-focusing as well as THz generation with a'turning point',where the THz emission reaches its maximum *** results show that the strength of self-focusing and consequently the generated THz radiation are reduced by increasing the density of doubly charged ionic species in the plasma due to the suppression of the nonlinear effects.

Data driven models for compressive strength prediction of concrete at high temperatures

The use of data driven models has been shown to be useful for simulating complex engineering processes,when the only information available consists of the data of the *** this study,four data-driven models,namely multiple linear regression,artificial neural network,adaptive neural fuzzy inference system,and K nearest neighbor models based on collection of 207 laboratory tests,are investigated for compressive strength prediction of concrete at high *** addition for each model,two different sets of input variables are examined:a complete set and a parsimonious set of involved *** results obtained are compared with each other and also to the equations of NIST Technical Note standard and demonstrate the suitability of using the data driven models to predict the compressive strength at high *** addition,the results show employing the parsimonious set of input variables is sufficient for the data driven models to make satisfactory results.
