The Combination Effect of Daphne Extract and Imatinib on the Antiproliferative Activity of the K562 Cell Line

Background: Herbal medicine is well-known among the ancient medical sciences. Healing properties have been observed in some species of Daphne plant. The effect of Daphne plant extract on the K562 cell line has been previously studied, and Gleevec is a well-known and effective medicine for the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia. Material and Methods: In this study, the simultaneous effects of using herbal medicine and a target therapy medicine on the K562 cell line were investigated. The presence of some species of Daphne in Iran motivated us to evaluate the cytotoxic effect of Daphne mucronata on human leukemia cancer cells. The antiproliferative activity of the dichloromethane extract of Daphne mucronate (Thymelaeaceae), a new anticancer medicinal plant, was evaluated. Cell viability was quantitated by MTT assay. Apoptotic and necrotic changes in the cell membrane were examined using flow cytometry. Changes in Bax and Bcl2 gene expression were investigated using real-time PCR. The MIC and the IC50 of the crude extract were calculated, and the MIC and IC50 of the Daphne extract in combination of imatinib were tested in the K-562 cell line. Results: K-562 cells responded to the extract treatments in a dose-dependent manner, and the increase in the expression of Bcl2 and decrease in the expression of the Bax gene intensified with increasing extract concentration. Flow cytometry revealed that most of the cells underwent necrosis. Conclusion: Daphne extract effectively decreased the viability of the K562 cell line. The necrotic effect of the Daphne extract was evaluated, and an increase in the gene expression of Bcl2 was observed in cells exposed to the Daphne extract. The combination of Daphne extracts with imatinib enhances the cytotoxic effect of imatinib.

Environmental impact prediction using remote sensing images

Environmental impact prediction is an important step in many environmental studies. A wide variety of methods have been developed in this concern. During this study, remote sensing images were used for environmental impact prediction in Ro-batkarim area, Iran, during the years of 2005～2007. It was assumed that environmental impact could be predicted using time series satellite imageries. Natural vegetation cover was chosen as a main environmental element and a case study. Environmental impacts of the regional development on natural vegetation of the area were investigated considering the changes occurred on the extent of natural vegetation cover and the amount of biomass. Vegetation data, land use and land cover classes (as activity factors) within several years were prepared using satellite images. The amount of biomass was measured by Soil-adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) based on satellite images. The resulted biomass estimates were tested by the paired samples t-test method. No significant difference was observed between the average biomass of estimated and control samples at the 5% significance level. Finally, regression models were used for the environmental impacts prediction. All obtained regression models for prediction of impacts on natural vegetation cover show values over 0.9 for both correlation coefficient and R-squared. According to the resulted methodology, the prediction models of projects and plans impacts can also be developed for other environmental elements which may be derived using time series remote sensing images.

Functional response of Chrysoperla carnea （Neuroptera： Chrysopidae） to Helicoverpa armigera （Lepidoptera： Noctuidae） Effect of prey and predator stages

Understanding predator-prey interactions has a pivotal role in biological control programs. This study evaluated the functional response of three larval instars of the green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea （Stephens）, preying upon eggs and first instar larvae of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera Hubner. The first and second instar larvae of C. carnea exhibited typeⅡ functional responses against both prey stages. However, the third instar larvae of C. carnea showed a type II functional response to the first instar larvae of H. armigera, but a typeⅢ functional response to the eggs. For the first instar larvae of C. carnea, the attack rate on H. armigera eggs was significantly higher than that on the larvae, whereas the attack rate of the second instar C. carnea on H. armigera larvae was significantly higher than that on the eggs. For the third instar larvae of C. carnea, the attack rate on the larvae was 1.015±0.278/h, and the attack coefficient on the eggs was 0.036 ±0.005. The handling times of the third instar larvae on larvae and eggs were 0.087 ± 0.009 and 0.071 ± 0.001 h, respectively. The highest predation rate was found for the third instar larvae of C. carnea on H. armigera eggs. Results of this study revealed that the larvae of C. carnea, especially the third instar, had a good predation potential in controlling H. armigera eggs and larvae. However, for a comprehensive estimation of the bio- control abilities of C. carnea toward H, armigera, further field-based studies are needed.

本文的目的是对作为一系列观测数据的时间序列来进行拟合。在观测数据时要等时间段的间隔,每个观测值大小在某种程度上依赖于以前的观测值,因此随着时间的推移会产生随机误差。这一系列误差被称为白噪声或者残差。这些被研究的数据都是按时间次序有规律的排列,比如是按秒、分、小时、天、星期、年、千年等等。时间序列分析的最终目标是以过去、现在的数据特征状况为基础去预测未来。在时间序列分析中,使用ARIMA(一体化自动回归可变平均模型)在研究任何观测对象是有用的。它一般分三步进行：识别、预测、模型的合理性诊断。当预测的相关因素固定不变,我们首先使用平稳时间序列模型,这是很关键的一步。最大似然估计将被用于寻找预测的决定因素。ARIMA模型将会被使用,因为它赋予数据值的大小、显著的统计相关系数、以及更小的随机误差。Ljung-Box数据有p-值和卡方分布。如果p值不是显著的,则表明残差不是独立的。当代表ARIMA模型的特征多项式的精确根超过一个时,时间序列就会有一个常数均值。干预分析将用来评估在时间序列中某种特别事件的影响,重点是预测时间序列在平均水平下受到的影响,但其他的影响也会考虑。因此我们考虑研究时间序列的两类干预：a)脉冲型函数b)阶梯型函数。如果有特定的事件影响时间序列,那么干预分析可以解释。

The Synthesis of Nano TiO₂ and Its Use for Removal of Lead Ions from Aqueous Solution

In this study, nano-TiO2 particles were synthesized by sol-gel method. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The results showed that the average size of TiO2 nanoparticles and their specific surface area were 21.1 nanometer and 55.35 m2/gr, respectively. The effects of several variables such as adsorbent weight, pH and contact time on lead ions adsorption were studied in batch experiments and finally the optimum conditions for lead ions adsorption by synthesized nano-TiO2 were obtained. The results showed that the synthesized nano TiO2 had a good capacity to adsorb lead ion. The kinetic data were described by pseudo-first and second-order models. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models were used for the analysis of equilibrium data, and results showed that the Langmuir model was suitable for describing the equilibrium data of lead ion adsorption by nano TiO2. Using the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum sorption capacity of Pb2+ was estimated to be 7.41 (mg/g) at 25°C.
