Radial Pulse and Electrocardiography Modulation by Mild Thermal Stresses Applied to Feet: An Exploratory Study with Randomized, Crossover Design

Objective:To investigate the changes in radial pulse induced by thermal stresses(TSs).Methods:Sixty subjects were *** an open-label,2x2 crossover randomization design,both feet of each subject were immersed in 15%:water for cold stress(CS)and in 40 X:water for heat stress(HS)for 5 min *** pulse,respiration and electrocardiogram(ECG)signals were recorded before,during and immediately after the ***:The an alysis of heart rate variability revealed that CS in creased the low-freque ncy(LF)and high-frequency(HF)components(Puced the LF and HF components(Puced the normalized LF,increased the normalized HF,and reduced the LF/HF *** differences in the ECG signals were more dominant during the TS sessions,but those in the radial pulse signals became more domi nant immediately after the TS sessi *** decreased the pulse depth(Pugme ntation in dex(Pulse pressure(Pube ndocardial viability ratio(Pulse rate during the three time sequences of each *** respiration rate was increased(Pulse rate per respiration(P/R ratio)was significantly decreased(Pulse spectral density was suppressed during both ***:CS induced vasoconstriction and sympathetic reactions,and HS induced vasodilation and parasympathetic reacti *** on defi nitions used in pulse diag no sis,we made the novel discoveries that the pulse became slower(decreased P/R ratio),more floating and tenser under CS and that the HF region of the spectral power decreased significantly under both TSs.

Human neural stem cells promote proliferation of endogenous neural stem cells and enhance angiogenesis in ischemic rat brain

Transplantation of human neural stem cells into the dentate gyrus or ventricle of rodents has been reportedly to enhance neurogenesis. In this study, we examined endogenous stem cell proliferation and angiogenesis in the ischemic rat brain after the transplantation of human neural stem cells. Focal cerebral ischemia in the rat brain was induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion. Human neural stem cells were transplanted into the subventricular zone. The behavioral performance of human neural stem cells-treated ischemic rats was significantly improved and cerebral infarct volumes were reduced compared to those in untreated animals. Numerous transplanted human neural stem cells were alive and preferentially localized to the ipsilateral ischemic hemisphere. Furthermore, 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine-labeled endogenous neural stem cells were observed in the subventricular zone and hippocampus, where they differentiated into cells immunoreactive for the neural markers doublecortin, neuronal nuclear antigen Neu N, and astrocyte marker glial fibrillary acidic protein in human neural stem cells-treated rats, but not in the untreated ischemic animals. The number of 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine-positive ？ anti-von Willebrand factor-positive proliferating endothelial cells was higher in the ischemic boundary zone of human neural stem cells-treated rats than in controls. Finally, transplantation of human neural stem cells in the brains of rats with focal cerebral ischemia promoted the proliferation of endogenous neural stem cells and their differentiation into mature neural-like cells, and enhanced angiogenesis. This study provides valuable insights into the effect of human neural stem cell transplantation on focal cerebral ischemia, which can be applied to the development of an effective therapy for stroke.

Graph Construction Method for GNN-Based Multivariate Time-Series Forecasting

Multivariate time-series forecasting(MTSF)plays an important role in diverse real-world *** achieve better accuracy in MTSF,time-series patterns in each variable and interrelationship patterns between variables should be considered ***,graph neural networks(GNNs)has gained much attention as they can learn both patterns using a *** accurate forecasting through GNN,a well-defined graph is ***,existing GNNs have limitations in reflecting the spectral similarity and time delay between nodes,and consider all nodes with the same weight when constructing *** this paper,we propose a novel graph construction method that solves aforementioned *** first calculate the Fourier transform-based spectral similarity and then update this similarity to reflect the time ***,we weight each node according to the number of edge connections to get the final graph and utilize it to train the GNN *** experiments on various datasets,we demonstrated that the proposed method enhanced the performance of GNN-based MTSF models,and the proposed forecasting model achieve of up to 18.1%predictive performance improvement over the state-of-the-art model.

Synthesis of Nano-sized Barium Titanate Powder by Solid-state Reaction between Barium Carbonate and Titania

Size control of BaTiO3 in solid-state reaction between BaCO3 and TiO2 was demonstrated by varying the size of TiO2 and milling conditions of BaCO3. The smaller TiO2 particles had higher surface area, resulting in faster initial reaction. The mechanically milled BaCO3 particles accelerated the diffusion process and decreased the calcinations temperature. It can be deduced from the results that the size control is possible and nano-sized BaTiO3 particles with about 60 nm can be synthesized by using the conventional solid-state reaction between BaCO3 and TiO2.

Feedback Control of an Achiral Robotic Microswimmer

Magnetic microswimmers are useful for navigating and performing tasks at small scales. To demonstrate effective control over such microswimmers, we implemented feedback control of the three-bead achiral microswimmers in both simulation and experiment. The achiral microswimmers with the ability to swim in bulk fluid are controlled wirelessly using magnetic fields generated from electromagnetic coils. The achirality of the microswimmers introduces unknown handedness resulting in uncertainty in swimming direction. We use a combination of rotating and static magnetic fields generated from an approximate Helmholtz coil system to overcome such uncertainty. There are also movement uncertainties due to environmental factors such as unsteady flow conditions. A kinematic model based feedback controller was created based on data fitting of experimental data. However, the controller was unable to yield satisfactory performance due to uncertainties from environmental factors; i.e., the time to reach target pose under adverse flow condition is too long. Following the implementation of an integral controller to control the microswimmers＇ swimming velocity, the mieroswimmers were able to reach the target in roughly half the time. Through simulation and experiments, we show that the feedback control law can move an achiral microswimmer from any initial conditions to a target pose.

Micro Manipulation using Magnetic Microrobots

When developing microscale robotic systems it is desired that they are capable of performing microscale tasks such as small scale manipulation and transport. In this paper, we demonstrate the transport of microscale objects using single or multiple microrobots in low Reynolds number fluidic environment. The microrobot is composed of a ‘u＇ shaped Su-8 body, coated on one side with nickel. Once the nickel coating is magnetized, the motion of the microrobots can be driven by external magnetic fields. To invoke different responses from two microrobots under a global magnetic field, two batches of microrobots were fabricated with different thicknesses of nickel coating as a way to promote heterogeneity within the microrobot population. The heterogeneity in magnetic content induces different spatial and temporal responses under the same control input, resulting in differences in movement speed. The nickel coated microstructure is manually controlled through a user interface developed using C＋＋. This paper presents a control strategy to navigate the microrobots by controlling the direction and strength of ex- ternally applied magnetic field, as well as orientation of the microrobots based on their polarity. In addition, multiple micro- robots are used to perform transport tasks.

The use of artificial nest boxes by Siberian flying squirrels (Pteromys volans) in South Korea

In this study, we examined the use of artificial nest boxes by Siberian flying squirrels (Pteromys volans) in three coniferous and mixed forests in Gangwon Province, South Korea. Six hundred and twelve boxes with different sized entry holes (ranging from 3 to 7 cm in diameter) were placed in the forests between 2004 and 2009. Pteromys volans used nine boxes in the coniferous forests and two boxes in the mixed forests. The squirrels only used boxes with entrance holes measuring 3.5, 4, and 5 cm in diameter, showing a strong and moderate preference for boxes with 5 and 4-cm holes, respectively, and a strong avoidance for boxes with 3- and 7-cm holes. Therefore, we suggest placing artificial nest boxes with entrance holes 5 cm in diameter to encourage breeding activity. Most nests made in the artificial boxes were composed of fibrous materials from woody vines. We recommend placing artificial nest boxes with holes of 5-cm diameter in coniferous forests, which support dense populations of P. volans, to survey whether this approach would positively affect the breeding habits and population maintenance of this species.

Late Pleistocene spore-pollen record and climatic change at the Chongphadae Cave Site,Democratic People's Republic of Korea

We present a detailed pollen record and interpretations of late Pleistocene climatic change at the Chongphadae Cave Site, Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The mean annual paleotemperature and mean annual paleoprecipitation of the site were calculated using the temperature index and precipitation index based on ecological features and geographical distribution of each taxon. Temperature index and precipitation index range from 8.8℃ to 10.4℃ and from 805.0 mm to 963.1 mm, respectively. Four dates(radiocarbon, uranium series, fission track, and paleomagnetic excursion dating) of the deposit profile investigated yield a range of ~21.3 ka BP to ~117 ka BP, geochronologically corresponding to the late Pleistocene, and extend from the last interglacial highstand through the Last Glacial Maximum. Our results are thus consistent with the climatic shift from interglacial to glacial conditions, provide evidence that the environments of the region, which was reconstructed from the paleoclimatic index, changed from a mild and humid to a cool and dry climate during the late Pleistocene, and suggest trends similar to those of several parts of the Northern Hemisphere which lie in the same latitudinal zone as our study area.
