Diel vertical migration of the copepod Calanus sinicus before and during formation of the Yellow Sea Cold Bottom Water in the Yellow Sea

To understand the effects of the Yellow Sea Cold Bottom Water （YSCBW） on the diel vertical migration （D- VM） of the copepod Calanus sinicus, we surveyed vertical distribution of C. sinicus at a fixed station in the Yellow Sea before （spring） and during （summer） formation of the YSCBW. Cold water （〈10℃） was observed in the bottom layer when the water column was thermally stratified in summer, but the water column was thermally well-mixed in spring 2010. Samples were collected from five different layers at 3-h intervals using an opening-closing net. Adult females （1-155 ind./m3） showed a clear normal DVM pattern throughout the entire water column in spring, whereas adult males did not migrate. DVM of copepodite V （CV） individuals was not clear, but the maximum abundance of CI-CIV occurred consistently in the upper 10-20 m layer, where there was a high concentration of chlorophyll-a （Chl-a）（0.49-1.19μg/L）. In summer, weak DVM was limited to cold waters beneath the thermocline for adult females （〈30 ind./m3）, but not for adult males. The maximum abundance of CI-CIV also occurred consistently in the subsurface layer （20-40 m） together with high concentrations of Chl-a （0.81-2.36 μg/L）. CV individuals （1-272 ind./m3） moved slightly upward noc- turnally to the near-surface layer （10-20 m）, where the average temperature was 25.74℃, but they were not found in the surface layer （0-10 m; 28.31℃）. These results indicate that the existence of the YSBCW affected food availability at depth and the vertical temperature distribution, leading to variation in the amplitude and shape of stage-specific vertical distributions （CI to adults） in C. sinicus before and during the formation of cold waters in the Yellow Sea during the study period.

Severity of ultrasonographic liver steatosis and metabolic syndrome in Korean men and women

AIM：To evaluate the association between the severity of liver steatosis and metabolic syndrome in apparently healthy Korean adults. METHODS： We examined 1022 men and women, aged 30-79 years, who participated in a health screening test. A standard interview, anthropometrics, biochemical studies, and abdominal ultrasonography were conducted for each participant. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel Ⅲ, with a modification for the waist circumference cut-off level. The severity of liver steatosis was evaluated using liver ultrasonography, and serum aspartate aminotransferase（AST）, alanine aminotransferase （ALT）, and γ-glutamyl transferase （γ-GT） levels were determined. RESULTS： Ultrasonographic liver steatosis was strongly associated with metabolic syndrome and common metabolic abnormalities. Compared with people without steatosis, people with mild, moderate, and severe steatosis had adjusted odds ratios for metabolic syndrome of 2.72 （95% CI, 1.01-2.94）, 2.89 （1.75-4.76） and 3.53 （1.25-9.98） in men, and 2.86 （1.64-5.01）, 3.19 （1.80-5.65） and 3.70 （0.82-16.73） in women, respectively. The serum AST level was not associated with metabolic syndrome. The serum ALT and γ-GT levels were significantly associated with metabolic syndrome in men but not in women.CONCLUSION： The occurrence of metabolic syndrome shows a stronger association with the severity of ultrasonographic steatosis than with the serum liver enzyme levels. The degree of fatty infiltration detected on ultrasonography can be used as an indicator of liver dysfunction attributable to metabolic abnormalities.

The study of photonic sintering has gained interest based on the advantages of fast processing at room ***,printed electronics made from photonic sintering with an intensive pulsed light(IPL)energy source exhibit more mechanical instability than those made from conventional thermal sintering *** solve the mechanical instability problems,we fabricated Ag flake hybrid pastes with a variety of concentrations of Ag flake(0,25,50,75,and 100 wt.%).All of the screen-printed hybrid Ag circuits were fabricated on polyimide substrates and were sintered at 3.5 *** porosity was analyzed using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller *** IPC(Packaging Electronic Circuits)sliding test was performed to analyze the flexibility of the screen-printed Ag flake hybrid *** adhesion strength of the hybrid circuits was evaluated with a roll-type 90°peel *** hybrid Ag printed circuit showed improvements in both the flexibility and adhesion strength with the addition of Ag flake.

Selexipag as Add-on Therapy for Patients with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Associated with Congenital Heart Disease:A Single-Center Retrospective Study

Purpose:This study examined the efficacy and safety of selexipag in treating pulmonary arterial hypertension(PAH)associated with congenital heart disease(CHD).Materials and Methods:We conducted a retrospective study of patients with CHD-associated PAH,treated with selexipag since December *** adult patients(mean age,45.4 years;women,77%)were treated with selexipag as add-on *** characteristics,World Health Organization functional class,6-minute walking distance(6MWD)test results,N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide levels,echocardiographic data,and incidence of side effects were ***:The majority of patients(12/13,92.3%)experienced more than one treatment-associated complication;one patient dropped out of the study due to intolerable *** results of 6MWD test(from 299.2±56.2 m to 363.8±86.5 m,p=0.039)and tricuspid regurgitation(TR)pressure gradient(from 84.7±20.5 mmHg to 61.6±24.0 mmHg,p=0.018)improved and remained improved after selexipag treatment in 12 *** on the results of a non-invasive risk assessment,8(66.7%)patients showed improvement,3(25.0%)showed no interval change,and the status of one patient(8.3%)***,compared to patients treated with a low dosage,patients treated with a medium-to-high dosage showed a greater increase in 6MWD results(88.3±26.4 m vs.55.3±27.6 m,p=0.043)and a greater reduction in the TR pressure gradient(-33.7±10.9 mmHg vs.-12.5±12.0 mmHg,p=0.015).Conclusion:Selexipag is an efficient pulmonary vasodilator as add-on therapy in treating CHD-associated PAH.

One-step method to enhance biotribological properties and biocompatibility of DLC coating by ion beam irradiation

A one-step method was developed to create a highly biocompatible micropatterned surface on a diamond-like carbon(DLC)through irradiation with a nitrogen ion beam and thus enhance the biocompatibility of osseointegrated surfaces and biotribological performance of articular *** biocompatibility and biotribological mechanisms were analyzed in terms of the structure and morphology of *** was demonstrated that a layer enriched in sp^(3) C-N bonds was formed on the surface of the DLC after nitrogen ion beam ***,with an increase in the radiation dose,the content of sp^(3) C-N on the DLC surface increased significantly,and the biocompatibility was positively correlated with *** adhesion of the MC3T3 osteoblasts increased significantly from 32%to 86%under an irradiation dose of 8×10^(15) ions/cm^(2).In contrast,the micropattern had a significant negative effect on the adhesion of the osteoblasts as it physically hindered cell expansion and *** micropattern with a depth of 37 nm exhibited good friction properties,and the coefficient of friction was reduced by 21%at relatively high speeds.

Weekend and nighttime effect on the prognosis of peptic ulcer bleeding

AIM:To evaluate whether weekend or nighttime admission affects prognosis of peptic ulcer bleeding despite early ***:Retrospective data collection from four referral centers,all of which had a formal out-of-hours emergency endoscopy service,even at weekends.A total of 388 patients with bleeding peptic ulcers who were admitted via the emergency room between January 2007 and December 2009 were *** parameters included time from patients' arrival until endoscopy,mortality,rebleeding,need for surgery and length of hospital ***:The weekday and weekend admission groups comprised 326 and 62 patients,*** were no significant differences in baseline characteristics between the two groups,except for younger age in the weekend *** patients (97%) had undergone early endoscopy,which resulted in a low mortality rate regardless of point of presentation (1.8% overall vs 1.6% on the weekend).The only outcome that was worse in the weekend group was a higher rate of rebleeding (12% vs 21%,P = 0.030).However,multivariate analysis revealed nighttime admission and a high Rockall score (≥ 6) as significant independent risk factors for rebleeding,rather than weekend ***:Early endoscopy for peptic ulcer bleeding can prevent the weekend effect,and nighttime admission was identified as a novel risk factor for rebleeding,namely the nighttime effect.

Significance of dysplasia in bile duct resection margin in patients with extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma:A retrospective analysis

BACKGROUND Radical resection is the only indicator associated with survival in extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(EHCC).However,limited data are available regarding the implications of dysplasia at the resection margin following *** To evaluate the prognostic significance of dysplasia-positive margins in patients diagnosed with *** We reviewed the records of patients who had undergone surgery for EHCC with curative intent between January 2013 and July *** retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological data of 116 patients followed for longer than 3 *** status of resection margin was used to classify patients into negative low-grade dysplasia(LGD)and high-grade dysplasia(HGD)/carcinoma in situ(CIS)*** Based on postoperative status,72 patients underwent resection with negative margins,19 had LGD-positive margins,and 25 showed HGD/CIS-positive *** mean survival rates of the patients with negative margins,LGD margins,and HGD/CIS margins were 49.1±4.5,47.3±6.0,and 20.8±4.4 mo,respectively(P70 years and HGD/CIS-positive margins were significant independent factors for survival(hazard ratio=1.90 and 2.47,respectively).CONCLUSION HGD/CIS margin in resected EHCC is associated with a poor ***,the LGDpositive resection margin is not a significant indicator of survival in patients with EHCC.

Bending Properties of GCr15 Steel Guide Rail under the Multi-step Loading

To analyze the bending properties of GCr15 steel guide rail based on the elastic-plastic theory, the novel bending loading method consisting of multi-step loading and corresponding unloading was applied in three specimens with different cross section shape and different heat treatment condition. According to the experimental results, using numerical calculation software program and the numerical simulation with finite element analysis （FEA）, the relationships among the maximal load and displacement on cross section shape with each step bend loading, the loading stroke with the heat treatment condition, and the loading stroke with cross section shape were gained, and also those curves were discussed qualitatively. Finally, the contrast results between the numerical simulation and experiment were carried out to study the influence about the multi-step loading on specimen. It is put forward that enlightenment for the straightening stroke in the precision linear guide rail manufacture process.

Collocation Methods for Hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations with Singular Sources

A numerical study is given on the spectral methods and the high order WENO finite difference scheme for the solution of linear and nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations with stationary and non-stationary singular *** singular source term is represented by theδ-*** the approximation of theδ-function,the direct projection method is used that was proposed in[6].Theδ-function is constructed in a consistent way to the derivative *** sine-Gordon equation with a stationary singular source was solved with the Chebyshev collocation ***δ-function with the spectral method is highly oscillatory but yields good results with small number of collocation *** results are compared with those computed by the second order finite difference *** modeling general hyperbolic equations with a non-stationary singular source,however,the solution of the linear scalar wave equation with the nonstationary singular source using the direct projection method yields non-physical oscillations for both the spectral method and the WENO *** numerical artifacts arising when the non-stationary singular source term is considered on the discrete grids are explained.
