Comparison of mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestions of thermal hydrolysis pretreated swine manure: Process performance,microbial communities and energy balance

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of swine manure (SM) commonly shows low biogas output and unsatisfactory economic performance. In this study, thermophilic AD (TAD, 50±1℃) was combined with thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP, 170℃/10 bar), to investigate its potential for maximizing biogas yield, securing successful digestion and microbial diversity, as well as improving energy balance. Four lab-scale continuously stirred tank reactors were operated for 300 days and compared with each other, i.e., reactor 1 (raw SM fed in mesophilic AD:RSM-MAD), reactor 2 (THP-treated SM fed in MAD:TSM-MAD), reactor 3 (RSM-TAD),and reactor 4 (TSM-TAD). The results showed that THP was efficient to increase methane production of SM, TSM-TAD mode led to the highest methane yield (129.8±40.5 mL-CH_(4)/gVS/day) among the tests (p 700 mg/L) or volatile fatty acids (> 6000 mg/L) accumulation compared with MAD in start-up phase, TSM-TAD treatment mode behaved a sustainable digestion process in a long-term operation. For TSM-TAD scenario, higher Shannon–Weaver (3.873) and lower Simpson index (0.061) indicated this mode ensured and enlarged the diversity of bacteria communities. Phylum Bathyarchaeota was dominant (59.3%-90.0%) in archaea community,followed by Euryarchaeota in the four reactors. RSM-MAD treatment mode achieved the highest energy output (4.65 GJ/day), TSM-TAD was less effective (-17.38 GJ/day) due to increased energy demands. Thus improving the energetic efficiency of THP units is recommended for the development of TSM-TAD treatment mode.

Two-Terminal Lithium-Mediated Artificial Synapses with Enhanced Weight Modulation for Feasible Hardware Neural Networks

Recently,artificial synapses involving an electrochemical reaction of Li-ion have been attributed to have remarkable synaptic properties.Three-terminal synaptic transistors utilizing Li-ion intercalation exhibits reliable synaptic characteristics by exploiting the advantage of nondistributed weight updates owing to stable ion migrations.However,the three-terminal configurations with large and complex structures impede the crossbar array implementation required for hardware neuromorphic systems.Meanwhile,achieving adequate synaptic performances through effective Li-ion intercalation in vertical two-terminal synaptic devices for array integration remains challenging.Here,two-terminal Au/LixCoO_(2)/Pt artificial synapses are proposed with the potential for practical implementation of hardware neural networks.The Au/LixCoO_(2)/Pt devices demonstrated extraordinary neuromorphic behaviors based on a progressive dearth of Li in LixCoO_(2)films.The intercalation and deintercalation of Li-ion inside the films are precisely controlled over the weight control spike,resulting in improved weight control functionality.Various types of synaptic plasticity were imitated and assessed in terms of key factors such as nonlinearity,symmetricity,and dynamic range.Notably,the LixCoO_(2)-based neuromorphic system outperformed three-terminal synaptic transistors in simulations of convolutional neural networks and multilayer perceptrons due to the high linearity and low programming error.These impressive performances suggest the vertical two-terminal Au/LixCoO_(2)/Pt artificial synapses as promising candidates for hardware neural networks.

Protective Effect of 10-Hz,1-mT Electromagnetic Field Exposure Against Hypoxia/Reoxygenation Injury in HK-2 Cells

We investigated the protective effects of electromagnetic field（EMF）on the survival of the human renal proximal tubular cell line,HK-2,using an in vitro hypoxia/reoxygenation（H/R）injury model.The survival rate of cells cultured under H/R condition declined significantly,while the intracellular reactive oxygen species（ROS）levels markedly increased.The 10 Hz/1 m T EMF exposure could inhibit H/R-induced cell death of HK-Z via suppression of intracellular ROS production and that this treatment might be clinically useful for the amelioration of renal ischemia/reperfusion injury.

GIGANTEA Shapes the Photoperiodic Rhythms of Thermomorphogenic Growth in Arabidopsis

Plants maintain their internal temperature under environments with fluctuating temperatures by adjusting their morphology and architecture,an adaptive process termed thermomorphogenesis.Notably,the rhythmic patterns of plant thermomorphogenesis are governed by day-length information.However,it remains elusive how thermomorphogenic rhythms are regulated by photoperiod.Here,we show that warm temperatures enhance the accumulation of the chaperone GIGANTEA(Gl),which thermostabilizes the DELLA protein,REPRESSOR OF ga1-3(RGA),under long days,thereby attenuating PHYTOCHROME INTERACTING FACTOR 4(PIF4)-mediated thermomorphogenesis.In contrast,under short days,when Gl accumulation is reduced,RGA is readily degraded through the gibberellic acid-mediated ubiquitination-proteasome pathway,promoting thermomorphogenic growth.These data indicate that the GI-RGA-PIF4 signaling module enables plant thermomorphogenic responses to occur in a day-length-dependent manner.We propose that the Gl-mediated integration of photoperiodic and temperature information shapes thermomorphogenic rhythms,which enable plants to adapt to diel fluctuations in day length and temperature during seasonal transitions.

Valorising Ikseon-dong’s Hanok residence as a heritage place

This study aims to create a basis for sustainable conservation by identifying the heritage value of 166 Ikseon-dong.Based on old land registers and cadastral maps of the 1920s and 1930s,it interpreted the construction procedure,social background,and urban architectural characteristics of the road and plot subdivision of the modern Hanok district.Ikseon-dong Hanok produced four types of ground plans based on the grid-street system.This study argues that these innovative experiments have already been attempted through Bak young-hyo’s proposals in his Geonbaekseo and the architectural activities of Jeong Segwon,and that the idea of applying various housing types,layouts,and grid-street system planning was embodied through the development of the Hanok complex in Ikseon-dong.Further,this attempt greatly influenced the design of other Hanok complexes built in colonial Gyeongseong after 1936,taking the Ikseon-dong Hanok as a role model.The radiation of new perspectives will be a groundwork for the future sustainable conservation of heritage places.

Case of inappropriate ADH syndrome:Hyponatremia due to polyethylene glycol bowel preparation

Colonoscopic screening has been reported to reduce deaths from colorectal cancer.Adequate bowel preparation is essential for this and safety is an important issue in choosing the methods.Polyethylene glycol(PEG)is regarded as a safe method for cleansing,especially compared with oral sodium phosphate.Here,we present a case of hyponatremia caused by the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone(ADH)syndrome after PEG precolonoscopic cleansing resulting in generalized tonic-clonic seizures.A 62-year-old women had ingested PEG for precolonoscopic bowel cleansing.While waiting for the colonoscopy,she developed a stuporous mentality and generalized tonic-clonic seizures,which did not correlate with brain magnetic resonance imaging.Her serum sodium level was 113 mEq per liter and laboratory analyses were consistent with inappropriate ADH syndrome.Her thyroid and adrenal functions were normal.There were no malignancies,infections,respiratory disorders or central nervous disorders and she had no history of taking either diuretics or other medications,which might have caused inappropriate ADH syndrome.She was treated with 3%hypertonic saline and showed a complete neurological recovery as her sodium levels recovered.Follow-up visits showed the patient to have a normal sodium level without neurologic deficits.This case shows that inappropriate ADH syndrome can be caused by PEG preparation,which implies that physicians have to be aware of the possible side effects of this colonic cleansing approach and mindful of the possible ensuing symptoms.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a life-threatening disorder caused mainly by pneumonia.Clostridium difficile infection(CDI)is a common nosocomial diarrheal disease.Disruption of normal intestinal flora by antibiotics is the main risk factor for CDI.The use of broadspectrum antibiotics for serious medical conditions can make it difficult to treat CDI complicated by acute respiratory distress syndrome.Fecal microbiota transplantation is a highly effective treatment in patients with refractory CDI.Here we report on a patient with refractory CDI and acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by pneumonia who was treated with fecal microbiota transplantation.

Dual in-situ observation of tribochemical and morphological evolution of single-layer WS_(2)and multi-layer WS_(2)/C coatings

The outstanding tribological performance of transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs)is attributed to their unique sandwich microstructure and low interlayer shear stress.This advantageous structure allows TMDs to demonstrate exceptional friction reduction properties.Furthermore,the incorporation of TMDs and amorphous carbon(a-C)in multi-layer structures shows excellent potential for further enhancing tribological and anti-oxidation properties.Amorphous carbon,known for its high ductility,chemical inertness,and excellent wear resistance,significantly contributes to the overall performance of these multi-layer coatings.To gain an in-depth understanding of the tribological mechanism and evolution of TMDs’multi-layer coatings,a dual in-situ analysis was carried out using a tribometer equipped with a 3D laser microscope and a Raman spectrometer.This innovative approach allowed for a comprehensive evolution of the tribological,topographical,and tribochemical characteristics of both single-layer WS_(2)and multi-layer WS_(2)/C coatings in real time.The findings from the dual in-situ tribotest revealed distinct failure characteristics between the single-layer WS_(2)coating and the multi-layer WS_(2)/C coating.The single-layer WS_(2)coating predominantly experienced failure due to mechanical removal,whereas a combination of mechanical removal and tribochemistry primarily influenced the failure of the multi-layer WS_(2)/C coating.The tribological evolution process of these two coatings can be classified into four stages on the basis of their tribological behavior:the running-in stage,stable friction stage,re-deposition stage,and lubrication failure stage.Each stage represents a distinct phase in the tribological behavior of the coatings and contributes to our understanding of their behavior during sliding.

Introduction Antibiotic use for acute otitis media(AOM)is one of the major sources of antimicrobial resistance.However,the effective minimal antibiotic duration for AOM remains unclear.Moreover,guidelines often recommend broad ranges(5-10 days)of antibiotic use,yet the clinical impact of such a wide window has not been assessed.Methods We systematically searched PubMed/MEDLINE,Embase,Scopus,Web of Science,and Cochrane Library from database inception to 6 October 2021.Network meta-analysis was conducted on randomized controlled trials that assessed antibiotic treatment for AOM in children(PROSPERO CRD42020196107).Results For amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanate,7-day regimens were noninferior to 10-day regimens in clinical responses[amoxicillin:risk ratio(RR)0.919(95%CI 0.820-1.031),amoxicillin-clavulanate:RR 1.108(0.957-1.282)],except for≤2 years.For the third-generation cephalosporins,7-day and 10-day regimens had similar clinical responses compared to placebo[7-day:RR 1.420(1.190-1.694),10-day:RR 1.238(1.125-1.362)compared to placebo].However,5-day regimens of amoxicillin-clavulanate and third-generation cephalosporins were inferior to 10-day regimens.Compared to amoxicillin,a shorter treatment duration was tolerable with amoxicillin-clavulanate.Conclusions Our findings indicated that 1O days of antibiotic use may be unnecessarily long,while the treatment duration should be longer than 5 days.Otherwise,5-day regimens would be sufficient for a modest treatment goal.Our findings revealed that the current wide range of recommended antibiotic durations may have influenced the clinical outcome of AOM,and a narrower antibiotic duration window should be re-established.

Factors affecting length of stay according to bronchopulmonary dysplasia severity:a nationwide cohort study in Korea

Background Longer hospitalizations for preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia(BPD)delay developmental outcomes,increase the risk for hospital-acquired complications,and exert a substantial socioeconomic burden.This study aimed to identify factors associated with an extended length of stay(LOS)at different levels of severity of BPD.Methods A cohort study was conducted using the Korean Neonatal Network registry of very low birth weight infants with BPD between 2013 and 2017 through retrospective analysis.Results A total of 4263 infants were diagnosed with BPD.For mild BPD,infants requiring surgical treatment for patent ductus arteriosus needed a longer LOS[eadjustedβcoefficients(adjβ)1.041;95%confidence interval(CI):0.01–0.08]and hydrocephalus(eadjβ1.094;95%CI 0.01–0.17).In moderate BPD,infants administered steroids or with intraventricular hemorrhage required a longer LOS(eadjβ1.041;95%CI 0.00–0.07 and eadjβ1.271;95%CI 0.11–0.38,respectively).In severe BPD,infants with comorbidities required a longer LOS:pulmonary hypertension(eadjβ1.174;95%CI 0.09–0.23),administrated steroid for BPD(eadjβ1.116;95%CI 0.07–0.14),sepsis(eadjβ1.062;95%CI 0.01–0.11),patent ductus arteriosus requiring surgical ligation(eadjβ1.041;95%CI 0.00–0.08),and intraventricular hemorrhage(eadjβ1.016;95%CI 0.05–0.26).Additionally,the higher the clinical risk index score,the longer the LOS needed for infants in all groups.Conclusions The factors affecting LOS differed according to the severity of BPD.Individualized approaches to reducing LOS may be devised using knowledge of the various risk factors affecting LOS by BPD severity.
