Seaweed has been used in traditional cosmetics and as a herbal medicine in treatments for cough,boils,goiters,stomach ailments,and urinary diseases,and for reducing the incidence of tumors,ulcers,and *** the fact that seaweeds are frequently used in the practice of human health,little is known about the role of seaweed in the context of *** study aimed to investigate the influence of Jeju endemic seaweed on a mouse macrophage cell line(RAW 264.7) under the stimulation of lipopolysaccharide(LPS).Ethyl acetate extracts obtained from 14 different kinds of Jeju seaweeds were screened for inhibitory effects on pro-inflammatory *** results revealed that extracts from five seaweeds,Laurencia okamurae,Grateloupia elliptica,Sargassum thun-bergii,Gloiopeltis furcata,and Hizikia fusiformis,were potent inhibitors of the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide(NO),prostaglandin E2(PGE2),interleukin-6(IL-6),and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α).Based on these results,the anti-inflammatory effects and low cell toxicity of these seaweed extracts suggest potential thera-peutic applications in the regulation of the inflammatory response.

Effect of a seasonal diffuse pollution migration on natural organic matter behavior in a stratified dam reservoir

This article aims to describe the influence of diffuse pollution on the temporal and spatial characteristics of natural organic matter （NOM） in a stratified dam reservoir, the Daecheong Dam, on the basis of intensive observation results and the dynamic water quality simulation using CE-QUAL-W2. Turbidity is regarded as a comprehensive representation of allochothonous organic matter from diffuse sources in storm season because the turbidity concentration showed reasonable significance in a statistical correlation with the UV absorbance at 254 nm and total phosphorus. CE-QUAL-W2 simulation results showed good consistency with the observed data in terms of dissolved organic matter （DOM） including refractory dissolved organic carbon （RDOC） and labile DOC and also well explained the internal movement of constituents and stratification phenomenon in the reservoir. Instead turbidity and NOM were related well in the upper region of the reservoir according to flow distance, gradually as changing to dissolved form of organic matter, RDOM affected organic matter concentration of reservoir water quality compared to turbidity. To control the increase of soluble organic matters in the dam reservoir, appropriate dam water discharge gate operation provided effective measurement. Because of the gate operation let avoid the accumulation of organic matter within a dam reservoir by shorten of turbid regime retention time.

Endoscopic bilateral stent-in-stent placement for malignant hilar obstruction using a large cell type stent

BACKGROUND： Bilateral stent-in-stent （SIS） self-expandable metal stent placement is technically chghallenging for palliation of unresectable malignant hilar obstruction. In the SIS technique, the uniform large cell type biliary stent facilitates contralateral stent deployment through the mesh of the first metallic stent. This study aimed to assess the technical success and clinical effectiveness of this technique with a uniform large cell type biliary stent. METHODS： Thirty-one patients who underwentlbilateral SIS placement using a large cell type stent were reviewed retrospectively. All patients showed malignant hilarl obstruction （Bismuth types Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ） with different etiologies. RESULTS： Sixteen （51.6%） patients were male. The mean age of the patients was 67.0±14.0 years. Most patients were diagnosed as having hilar cholangiocarcinoma （58.1%） and gallbladder cancer （29.0%）. Technical success rate was 83.9%. Success was achieved more frequently in patients without masses obstructing the biliary confluence （MOC） than those with MOC （95.2% vs 60.0%, P=0.03）. Functional success rate was 77.4%. Complications occurred in 29.0% of the patients. These tended to occur more frequently in patients with MOC （50.0% vs 19.0%, P=0.11）. Median time to recurrent biliary obstruction was 188 days and median survival was 175 days. CONCLUSIONS： The large cell type stent can be used efficiently for bilateral SIS placement in malignant hilar obstruction. However, the risk of technical failure increases in patients with MOC, and caution is needed to prevent complications for these patients.

Aerodynamic design optimization of helicopter rotor blades including airfoil shape for hover performance

This study proposes a process to obtain an optimal helicopter rotor blade shape for aerodynamic performance in hover flight. A new geometry representation algorithm which uses the class function/shape function transformation （CST） is employed to generate airfoil coordinates. With this approach, airfoil shape is considered in terms of design variables. The optimization process is constructed by integrating several programs developed by author. The design variables include twist, taper ratio, point of taper initiation, blade root chord, and coefficients of the airfoil distribution function. Aerodynamic constraints consist of limits on power available in hover and forward flight. The trim condition must be attainable. This paper considers rotor blade configuration for the hover flight condition only, so that the required power in hover is chosen as the objective function of the optimization problem. Sensitivity analysis of each design variable shows that airfoil shape has an important role in rotor performance. The optimum rotor blade reduces the required hover power by 7.4% and increases the figure of merit by 6.5%, which is a good improvement for rotor blade design.

Comparison between uncovered and covered self-expandable metal stent placement in malignant duodenal obstruction

AIM:To compare the clinical outcomes of uncovered and covered self-expandable metal stent placements in patients with malignant duodenal ***:A total of 67 patients were retrospectivelyenrolled from January 2003 to June *** patients had symptomatic obstruction characterized by nausea,vomiting,reduced oral intake,and weight *** exclusion criteria included asymptomatic duodenal obstruction,perforation or peritonitis,concomitant small bowel obstruction,or duodenal obstruction caused by benign *** technical and clinical success rate,complication rate,and stent patency were compared according to the placement of uncovered(n = 38) or covered(n = 29) ***:The technical and clinical success rates did not differ between the uncovered and covered stent groups(100% vs 96.6% and 89.5% vs 82.8%).There were no differences in the overall complication rates between the uncovered and covered stent groups(31.6% vs 41.4%).However,stent migration occurred more frequently with covered than uncovered stents [20.7%(6/29) vs 0%(0/38),P < 0.05].Moreover,the overall cumulative median duration of stent patency was longer in uncovered than in covered stents [251 d(95%CI:149.8 d-352.2 d) vs 139 d(95%CI:45.5 d-232.5 d),P < 0.05 by log-rank test] The overall cumulative median survival period was not different between the uncovered stent(70 d) and covered stent groups(60 d).CONCLUSION:Uncovered stents may be preferable in malignant duodenal obstruction because of their greater resistance to stent migration and longer stent patency than covered stents.

AIM:To compare the efficacy of self-expandable metal stents(SEMSs) with 10F plastic stents(PSs) in the endoscopic management of occluded ***:We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 56 patients who underwent SEMS insertion for palliation of unresectable malignant biliary obstruction between 2000 and 2007 and subsequent endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage(ERBD) with SEMS or PS for initial SEMS occlusion between 2000 and ***:Subsequent ERBD with SEMS was performed in 29 patients and with PS in *** median time to stent occlusion after subsequent ERBD was 186 d in the SEMS group and 101 d in the PS group(P= 0.118).Overall median stent patency was 79 d for the SEMS group and 66 d for the PS group(P = 0.379).The mean number of additional biliary drainage procedures after subsequent ERBD in patients that died(n = 50) during the study period was 2.54 ± 4.12 for the SEMS group and 1.85 ± 1.95 for the PS group(P = 0.457).The mean total cost of additional biliary drainage procedures after the occlusion of subsequent SEMS or PS was $410.04 ± 692.60 for the SEMS group and $630.16 ± 671.63 for the PS group(P = 0.260).Tumor ingrowth as the cause of initial SEMS occlusion was the only factor associated with a shorter time to subsequent stent occlusion(101 d for patients with tumor ingrowth vs 268 d for patients without tumor ingrowth,P = 0.008).CONCLUSION:Subsequent ERBD with PSs offered similar patency and number of additional biliary drainage procedures compared to SEMSs in the management of occluded SEMS.

Effect of Y and Y_2O_3 on oxidation of AZ91D Mg alloys between 400 ℃ and 500 ℃

AZ91D,AZ91D+1%Y,and AZ91D+3%Y2O3(mass fraction) alloys were cast,and oxidized between 400 and 500 ℃ in *** oxidation resistance increased in the order of AZ91D,AZ91D+3%Y2O3,and AZ91D+1%Y,indicating that Y was more effective than Y2O3 in increasing the oxidation resistance of the Mg ***,all the alloys tested experienced ignition because the major oxide was MgO.

Effect of Length Scale Tuning of Background Error in WRF-3DVAR System on Assimilation of High-Resolution Surface Data for Heavy Rainfall Simulation

We investigated the impact of tuning the length scale of the background error covariance in the Weather Research and Forecasting （WRF） three-dimensional variational assimilation （3DVAR） system. In particular, we studied the effect of this parameter on the assimilation of high-resolution surface data for heavy rainfall forecasts associated with mesoscale convective systems over the Korean Peninsula. In the assimilation of high-resolution surface data, the National Meteorological Center method tended to exaggerate the length scale that determined the shape and extent to which observed information spreads out. In this study, we used the difference between observation and background data to tune the length scale in the assimilation of high-resolution surface data. The resulting assimilation clearly showed that the analysis with the tuned length scale was able to reproduce the small-scale features of the ideal field effectively. We also investigated the effect of a double-iteration method with two different length scales, representing large and small-length scales in the WRF-3DVAR. This method reflected the large and small-scale features of observed information in the model fields. The quantitative accuracy of the precipitation forecast using this double iteration with two different length scales for heavy rainfall was high; results were in good agreement with observations in terms of the maximum rainfall amount and equitable threat scores. The improved forecast in the experiment resulted from the development of well-identified mesoscale convective systems by intensified low-level winds and their consequent convergence near the rainfall area.
