A global-scale multidecadal variability driven by Atlantic multidecadal oscillation

Observational analysis shows that there is a predominant global-scale multidecadal variability(GMV) of sea-surface temperature(SST). Its horizontal pattern resembles that of the interdecadal Pacific oscillation(IPO) in the Pacific and the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation(AMO) in the Atlantic Ocean, which could affect global precipitation and temperature over the globe. Here, we demonstrate that the GMV could be driven by the AMO through atmospheric teleconnections and atmosphere–ocean coupling *** reveal a strong negative correlation when AMO leads GMV by approximately 4–8 *** experiments using a climate model driven by observed AMO signals reveal that the tropical Atlantic warm SST anomalies of AMO initiate anomalous cooling in the equatorial central-eastern Pacific through atmospheric teleconnections. Anticyclonic anomalies in the North and South Pacific induce equatorward winds along the coasts of North and South America, contributing to further cooling. The upper-ocean dynamics plays a minor role in GMV formation but contributes to a delayed response of the IPO to the AMO forcing. The possible impact of the GMV on AMO was also tested by prescribing only Pacific SST in the model; however, the model could not reproduce the observed phase relationship between the AMO and the GMV. These results support the hypothesis that the Atlantic Ocean plays a key role in the multidecadal variability of global SST.

Effects of surface roughness on bending properties of rolled AZ31 alloy

This study investigated the effects of mechanical-polishing-induced surface roughness and the direction of polishing lines on the bending properties of a rolled AZ31 *** this end,three-point bending tests were performed on one sample without polishing lines(SS sample)and two samples with polishing lines—one in which the polishing lines were parallel to the rolling direction(RS-RD sample)and the other in which they were parallel to the transverse direction(RS-TD sample).In all three samples,macrocracks were formed in the width direction on the outer surface,where tensile stress was predominantly generated in the longitudinal ***,the macrocracks formed in the SS sample were curved because of the merging of uniformly formed fine microcracks,whereas those formed in the RS-TD sample were linear owing to the formation of relatively coarse microcracks along the polishing *** bendability of the samples was in the order of SS>RS-RD>RS-TD,and their limiting bending depths were 4.8,4.6,and 4.4 mm,*** the presence of mechanical-polishing-induced surface roughness,polishing lines perpendicular to the direction of the major stress(i.e.,tensile stress along the longitudinal direction)resulted in a greater degree of stress concentration on the outer surface of the bending *** higher stress concentration promoted the formation of undesirable{10–11}contraction and{10–11}–{10–12}double twins—which typically act as crack initiation sites—and thereby facilitated crack generation and ***,the surface roughness caused premature fracture during bending deformation,which,in turn,caused deterioration of the bendability of the rolled Mg alloy.

Bending properties of extruded AZ91–0.9Ca–0.6Y alloy and their improvement through precompression and annealing

In this study,an extruded Mg–9Al–1Zn–0.3Mn–0.9Ca–0.6Y(AZXW9110)alloy is subjected to precompression and subsequent annealing(PCA)treatment for improving its bending formability,and the three-point bending properties of the as-extruded material and the precompressed and subsequently annealed(PCAed)material at room temperature are *** bending,microcracks formed in undissolved Al2Ca,Al2Y,and Al8Mn4Y particles propagate along the grain boundaries or twin boundaries and consequently form a macrocrack in the tension zones of the bending samples of both the ***,the bending formability of the PCAed material is 75%higher than that of the as-extruded material owing to the promoted twinning and slip behaviors in the *** as-extruded material has a strong normal direction(ND)texture and a weak transverse direction(TD)texture,and the ND-and TD-oriented grains are unfavorable for both{10–12}twinning and basal slip in the tension zone of the bending sample of this material,which eventually results in its low bending *** PCAed material has a strong extrusion direction(ED)texture,weak TD texture,and spread ND *** bending,{10–12}twins are fully formed in the ED-oriented grains,and this{10–12}twinning effectively accommodates the plastic strain in the tension *** addition,the activation of basal slip in the ND-oriented grains of the PCAed material is promoted owing to the spread ND texture of this ***,this material exhibits substantially superior bending formability because of the vigorous{10–12}twinning in its ED-oriented grains and promoted basal slip in its ND-oriented grains.

Porous FeS nanofibers with numerous nanovoids obtained by Kirkendall diffusion effect for use as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries

Porous FeS nanofibers with numerous nanovoids for use as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries were prepared by electrospinning and subsequent sulfidation. The post-treatment of the as-spun Fe（acac）3-polyacrylonitrile composite nanofibers in an air atmosphere yielded hollow Fe2O3 nanofibers due to Ostwald ripening. The ultrafine Fe2O3 nanocrystals formed at the center of the fiber diffused toward the outside of the fiber via Ostwald ripening. On sulfidation, the Fe2O3 hollow nanofibers were transformed into porous FeS nanofibers, which contained numerous nanovoids. The formation of porosity in the FeS nanofibers was driven by nanoscale Kirkendall diffusion. The porous FeS nanofibers were very structurally stable and had superior sodium-ion storage properties compared with the hollow Fe2O3 nanofibers. The discharge capacities of the porous FeS nanofibers for the Ist and 150th cycles at a current density of 500 mA.g-1 were 561 and 592 mA.h-g-1, respectively. The FeS nanofibers had final discharge capacities of 456, 437, 413, 394, 380, and 353 mA-h.g-1 at current densities of 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 5.0 A.g-1, respectively.

Acceleration of aging behavior and improvement of mechanical properties of extruded AZ80 alloy through(10–12) twinning

The effects of pre-existing {10–12} extension twins on the precipitation behavior of an extruded AZ80 material during aging and on its mechanical properties after peak aging are investigated. The material containing {10–12} twins-which are formed by compression before aging(twinned material)-has a finer grain size and higher dislocation density than the extruded material. Although the peak hardnesses of the twinned and extruded materials are almost the same, the time to reach the peak hardness is considerably shorter in the former material than in the latter(4 h and 24 h, respectively). In the twinned material, the high dislocation density of the {10–12} twins promotes continuous precipitation, which results in the formation of numerous fine Mg17Al12precipitates within the twins in the early stage of *** formation of these continuous precipitates reduces the driving force for discontinuous precipitation, which consequently suppresses the formation and growth of coarse Mg17Al12precipitates at the grain boundaries. Despite its shorter peak-aging time, the 4 h-peak-aged twinned material shows higher tensile strength and elongation than the 24 h-peak-aged extruded material. These higher mechanical properties of the former material are attributed primarily to the presence of more abundant fine continuous precipitates, which are effective in strengthening the material, and less abundant coarse discontinuous precipitates, which can act as crack initiation sites. These results demonstrate that the introduction of {10–12} twins into wrought Mg–Al-based alloys can accelerate the Mg17Al12precipitation kinetics considerably and improve the strength and ductility of the peak-aged alloys simultaneously.

Anion exchange membrane(AEM)water electrolyzers are promising energy devices for the production of clean hydrogen from ***,the lack of active and robust electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction(OER)severely impedes the development of this *** this study,a ternary layered double hydroxide(LDH)OER electrocatalyst(NiFeCo-LDH)is developed for high-performance AEM alkaline seawater *** AEM alkaline seawater electrolyzer catalyzed by the NiFeCo LDH shows high seawater electrolysis performance(0.84 A/cm^(2)at 1.7 Vcell)and high hydrogen production efficiency(77.6%at 0.5 A/cm^(2)),thus outperforming an electrolyzer catalyzed by a benchmark IrO_(2)*** NiFeCo-LDH electrocatalyst greatly improves the kinetics of the AEM alkaline seawater electrolyzer,consequently reducing its activation loss and leading to high *** on the results,this NiFeCo-LDH-catalyzed AEM alkaline seawater electrolyzer can likely surpass the energy conversion targets of the US Department of Energy.

AIM:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of grasper type scissors(GTS)for endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD)of gastric epithelial ***:The study was performed by 4 endoscopists in 4 institutions affiliated to The Catholic University of *** was performed in 76 consecutive patients with gastric epithelial neoplasia by using the GTS(37 patients)or the hook knife plus coagrasper(HKC)(39 patients).The complete resection rate,complication rate,total time elapsed and elapsed time per square centimeter of the dissected specimen were analyzed between the GTS and HKC ***:The mean age of the GTS group was 62.3±11.4 years and mean age of the HKC group was 65.6±10.1 *** adenocarcinoma was found in32.4%in the GTS group and 33.3%in the HKC *** procedures were performed without interruption in every case in both *** en bloc resection rates of both groups were 100%.The total time elapsed during the procedure was 44.54±21.72 min in the GTS group and 43.77±21.84 min in the HKC group(P=0.88)and the time elapsed per square centimeter of the resected lesion was 7.53±6.35 min/cm2in the GTS group and 6.92±5.93 min/cm2in the HKC group(P=0.66).The overall complication rate was not significantly different between the two ***:GTS is a safe and effective device for ESD compared with *** can be performed with GTS alone,which can reduce the costs for ESD.

Tonicity response element binding protein associated with neuronal cell death in the experimental diabetic retinopathy

AIM: To study the contribution of tonicity response element binding protein(Ton EBP) in retinal ganglion cell(RGC) death of diabetic retinopathy(DR).METHODS: Diabetes was induced in C57BL/6 mice by five consecutive intraperitoneal injections of 55 mg/kg streptozotocin(STZ). Control mice received vehicle(phosphate-buffered saline). All mice were killed 2mo after injections, and the extent of cell death and the protein expression levels of Ton EBP and aldose reductase(AR) were ***: The Ton EBP and AR protein levels and the death of RGC were significantly increased in the retinas of diabetic mice compared with controls 2mo after the induction of diabetes. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase(Td T)-mediated d UTP nick end labeling(TUNEL)-positive signals co-localized with Ton EBP immunoreactive RGC. These changes were increased in the diabetic retinas compared with ***: The present data show that AR and Ton EBP are upregulated in the DR and Ton EBP may contribute to apoptosis of RGC in the DR.

BACKGROUND Acute myeloid leukemia(AML)harboring 11q23 translocations is classified as therapy-related AML in patients who have undergone prior treatment with cytotoxic *** have been only a few reports of AML that subsequently developed during imatinib mesylate(IM)treatment for gastrointestinal stromal tumors(GISTs).CASE SUMMARY A 63-year-old woman was diagnosed with a hepatic GIST recurrence in April 2012;she was administered IM 400 mg/*** November 2015,she developed dyspnea with pancytopenia while IM treatment was continued for 42 mo.A chromosome study using a bone marrow sample showed a 46,XX karyotype with t(11;19)(q23;p13.1)in 22 of 26 analyzed metaphase *** in situ hybridization using the locus-specific indicator(11q23)gene break-apart probe showed positive rearrangement in 82%of interphase ***-transcription polymerase chain reactions subsequently confirmed the KMT2A/ELL *** achieved complete response with incomplete neutrophil recovery with two decitabine treatment *** the third cycle of decitabine,the disease relapsed,and she refused further *** died of hemorrhagic stroke 5 mo after *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first report of AML with KMT2A gene rearrangements in a patient with a GIST receiving IM *** Physicians should consider the potential risks of developing hematologic malignancies,including therapy-related AML,in patients with GISTs receiving IM treatment.
