Superinsulating BNNS/PVA Composite Aerogels with High Solar Reflectance for Energy-Efficient Buildings

With the mandate of worldwide carbon neutralization,pursuing comfortable living environment while consuming less energy is an enticing and unavoidable choice.Novel composite aerogels with super thermal insulation and high sunlight reflection are developed for energy-efficient buildings.A solvent-assisted freeze-casting strategy is used to produce boron nitride nanosheet/polyvinyl alcohol(BNNS/PVA)composite aerogels with a tailored alignment channel structure.The effects of acetone and BNNS fillers on microstructures and multifunctional properties of aerogels are investigated.The acetone in the PVA suspension enlarges the cell walls to suppress the shrinkage,giving rise to a lower density and a higher porosity,accompanied with much diminished heat conduction throughout the whole product.The addition of BNNS fillers creates whiskers in place of disconnected transverse ligaments between adjacent cell walls,further ameliorating the thermal insulation transverse to the cell wall direction.The resultant BNNS/PVA aerogel delivers an ultralow thermal conductivity of 23.5 mW m^(−1) K^(−1) in the transverse direction.The superinsulating aerogel presents both an infrared stealthy capability and a high solar reflectance of 93.8%over the whole sunlight wave-length,far outperforming commercial expanded polystyrene foams with reflective coatings.The anisotropic BNNS/PVA composite aerogel presents great potential for application in energy-saving buildings.

Heterojunction between bimetallic metal-organic framework and TiO_(2):Band-structure engineering for effective photoelectrochemical water splitting

Bimetallic Fe/Ni-based metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)with different Fe/Ni ratios were coated on TiO_(2)nanorods(NRs),and the performances of the heterojunction photoanodes in photoelectrochemical water splitting were investigated.The bandgaps and band positions of the MOFs could be modulated by changing the ratio of the Fe and Ni components.An ideal band alignment was achieved between the TiO_(2)NRs and bimetallic MOFs with an optimum ratio of[Fe]/[Ni]=0.25/0.75,which allowed efficient light absorption and charge separation.The coating of NH_(2)-MIL(Fe)-88 layer on the TiO_(2)NRs decreased the photocurrent density by 33%.In comparison,TiO_(2)/NH_(2)-MIL(Ni)-88 showed a modest improvement in photocurrent density(0.85 mA·cm^(−2)at 1.23 V vs.a reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE)).When bimetallic NH_(2)-MIL(Fe_(0.25)Ni_(0.75))-88 was coated on the TiO_(2)NRs,the photocurrent density reached 1.56 mA·cm^(−2),which was an efficiency enhancement of 3.2 times.The mechanism underlying high photoelectrochemical performance was investigated.

Observation of baroclinic eddies southeast of Okinawa Island

In the region southeast of Okinawa, during May to July 2001, a cyclonic and an anticyclonic eddy were observed from combined measurements of hydrocasts, an upward-looking moored acoustic Doppler current profiler (MADCP), pressure-recording inverted echo sounders (PIESs), satellite altimetry, and a coastal tide gauge. The hydrographic data showed that the lowest/highest temperature (T) and salinity (S) anomalies from a 13-year mean for the same season were respectively -3.0/+2.5℃ and -0.20/+0.15 psu at 380/500 dbar for the cyclonic/anticyclonic eddies. From the PIES data, using a gravest empirical mode method, we estimated time-varying surface dynamic height (D) anomaly referred to 2000 dbar changing from -20 to 30 cm, and time-varying T and S anomalies at 500 dbar ranging through about ±2 ℃ and ±0.2 psu, respectively. The passage of the eddies caused variations of both satellite-measured sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) and tide-gauge-measured sea level anomaly to change from about –20 to 30 cm, consistent with the D anomaly from the PIESs. Bottom pressure sensors measured no variation related to these eddy activities, which indicated that the two eddies were dominated by baro-clinicity. Time series of SSHA map confirmed that the two eddies, originating from the North Pacific Subtropical Countercurrent region near 20°―30°N and 150°―160°E, traveled about 3000 km for about 18 months with mean westward propagation speed of about 6 cm/s, before arriving at the region southeast of Okinawa Island.

Comparative study of chitosan/fibroin–hydroxyapatite and collagen membranes for guided bone regeneration in rat calvarial defects: micro-computed tomography analysis

This study aimed to utilize micro-computed tomography （micro-CT） analysis to compare new bone formation in rat calvarial defects using chitosan/fibroin-hydroxyapatite （CFB-HAP） or collagen （Bio-Gide） membranes. Fifty-four （54） rats were studied. A circular bony defect （8 mm diameter） was formed in the centre of the calvaria using a trephine bur. The CFB-HAP membrane was prepared by thermally induced phase separation. In the experimental group （n= 18）, the CFB-HAP membrane was used to cover the bony defect, and in the control group （n= 18）, a resorbable collagen membrane （Bio-Gide） was used. In the negative control group （n= 18）, no membrane was used. In each group, six animals were euthanized at 2, 4 and 8 weeks after surgery. The specimens were then analysed using micro-CT. There were significant differences in bone volume （BV） and bone mineral density （BMD）（P〈O.05） between the negative control group and the membrane groups. However, there were no significant differences between the CFB-HAP group and the collagen group. We concluded that the CFB-HAP membrane has significant potential as a guided bone regeneration （GBR） membrane.

We demonstrate a new type of multifocal and extended depth of focus(EDOF)intraocular lenses(IOLs)embeddingμm-thin geometric phase(GP)lens layers.As an emerging approach for lens phase design,the GP modulated IOLs outperform conventional diffractive IOLs in multifocality while completely avoiding the clinically undesirable demand for additional surface patterns to standard monofocal IOL designs.The number of foci and light splitting ratio of the GP IOLs are adjusted by changing the number of stacked GP layers and the thickness of each layer.Bifocal and trifocal GP IOLs are fabricated by radial alignment of anisotropic orientation in UV-curable liquid crystal polymers.After characterizing the defocus image and modulation transfer function of the GP IOLs,it is expected that GP IOLs will alleviate the most common problems associated with multifocal and EDOF IOLs,blurred vision and photic phenomena caused by light scattering and posterior capsule opacification.

Background:Hospitalized patients recovering from coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)may experience disability and suffer from significant physical and mental impairment requiring physical rehabilitation following their discharge.However,to date,no attempt has been made to collate and synthesize literature in this area.Objective:This systematic review examines the outcomes of different physical rehabilitation interventions tested in COVID-19 patients who were discharged from hospital.Search strategy:A systematic search of MEDLINE/PubMed,CINAHL,Scopus and medRxiv was conducted to identify articles published up to March 2022.Inclusion criteria:This systematic review included studies of outpatient rehabilitation programs for people recovering from COVID-19 who received physical activity,exercise,or breathing training to enhance or restore functional capacity,pulmonary function,quality of life,and mental health or function.Data extraction and analysis:Selection of included articles,data extraction,and methodological quality assessments were conducted by two review authors respectively,and consensus was reached through discussion and consultation with a third reviewer.Finally,we review the outcomes of studies based on four categories including:(1)functional capacity,(2)pulmonary function,(3)quality of life,and(4)mental health status.Results:A total of 7534 titles and abstracts were screened;10 cohort studies,4 randomized controlled trials and 13 other prospective studies involving 1583 patients were included in our review.Early physical rehabilitation interventions applied in COVID-19 patients who were discharged from the hospital improved multiple parameters related to functional capacity,pulmonary function,quality of life and mental health status.Conclusion:Physical rehabilitation interventions may be safe,feasible and effective in COVID-19 patients discharged from the hospital,and can improve a variety of clinically relevant outcomes.Further studies are warranted to determine the underlying mechanisms.

Colo-colonic intussusception with post-polypectomy electrocoagulation syndrome:A case report

BACKGROUND Post-polypectomy electrocoagulation syndrome(PPES)can occur after colonoscopic polypectomy and is usually treated conservatively with a positive prognosis.Nevertheless,there can be cases with complications developing.CASE SUMMARY A 58-year-old woman,who had no previous medical history,visited the Emergency Department of another hospital with symptoms of abdominal pain and fever,1 d after multiple colonoscopic polypectomies.An abdominopelvic computed tomography(CT)scan demonstrated colo-colonic intussusception,and she was transferred to our hospital to consider an operation.CT showed colocolonic intussusception with PPES and no evidence of obstruction.The physical examination showed localized mild tenderness on the right sided abdomen.The patient fasted and was admitted for treatment with intravenous antibiotics(piperacillin/tazobactam 4.5 g each 8 h,ornidazole 500 mg each 12 h).After admission,the symptoms got better and a follow-up CT scan demonstrated resolution of the PPES and intussusception.The patient was discharged on hospital day 9.CONCLUSION Colo-colic intussusception can occur with PPES,and it can be properly treated conservatively.

Coupled CUBIC Congestion Control for MPTCP in Broadband Networks

Recently,multipath transmission control protocol(MPTCP)was standardized so that data can be transmitted through multiple paths to utilize all available path bandwidths.However,when high-speed long-distance networks are included in MPTCP paths,the traffic transmission performance of MPTCP is severely deteriorated,especially in case the multiple paths’characteristics are heavily asymmetric.In order to alleviate this problem,we propose a“Coupled CUBIC congestion control”that adopts TCP CUBIC on a large bandwidth-delay product(BDP)path in a linked increase manner for maintaining fairness with an ordinary TCP traversing the same bottleneck path.To verify the performance excellence of the proposed algorithm,we implemented the Coupled CUBIC Congestion Control into Linux kernels by modifying the legacy MPTCP linked-increases algorithm(LIA)congestion control source code.We constructed asymmetric heterogeneous network testbeds mixed with large and small BDP paths and compared the performances of LIA and Coupled CUBIC by experiments.Experimental results show that the proposed Coupled CUBIC utilizes almost over 80%of the bandwidth resource in the high BDP path,while the LIA utilizes only less than 20%of the bandwidth for the same path.It was confirmed that the resource utilization and traffic transmission performance have been greatly improved by using the proposed Coupled CUBIC in high-speed multipath networks,as well as maintaining MPTCP fairness with competing single-path CUBIC or Reno TCP flows.

Morbidity analysis of left hepatic trisectionectomy for hepatobiliary disease and live donor

Background:Despite remarkable advances in surgical techniques and perioperative management,left hepatic trisectionectomy(LHT)remains a challenging procedure with a somewhat high postoperative morbidity rate compared with less-extensive resections.This study aimed to analyze the short-and long-term outcomes of LHT and identify factors associated with the postoperative morbidity of this technically demanding surgical procedure.Methods:The medical records of 53 patients who underwent LHT between June 2005 and October 2019 at a single institution were retrospectively reviewed.The independent prognostic factor of postoperative morbidity was analyzed using the logistic regression model.Results:Hepatocellular carcinoma was the most common indication for surgery(n=21),followed by hilar cholangiocarcinoma(n=14),intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma(n=10),and other pathologies(including colorectal liver metastasis,hepatolithiasis,gallbladder cancer,living donor,hemangioma,and multilocular biliary cyst;n=8).The rates of postoperative morbidities of Clavien-Dindo grade 3 or higher and 90-day mortality were 39.6% and 1.9%,respectively.The 1-,3-,and 5-year overall survival rates were 81.1%,61.4%,and 44.6%,respectively.Multivariate analysis revealed that preoperative jaundice[hazard ratio(HR)=6.15,95%confidence interval(CI):1.57-24.17,P=0.009]and operative time>420 min(HR=4.66,95%CI:1.27–17.17,P=0.021)were independent predictors of postoperative morbidity.Conclusions:The in-hospital mortality of LHT surgery can be minimalized by a reliable preoperative evaluation of liver function and selection of the dominant anatomic features of right posterior sector,active and appropriate preoperative management for obstructive cholangitis and compensatory hypertrophy of the future remnant posterior sector,and the experience of the surgeon.

Proxy-Based Hierarchical Distributed Mobility Management for Tactical Networks

An important requirement in a military domain is a highly reliable mobility management method,especially when components of the networks aremoving in tactical network environments.To increase reliability,themobility management technology of the tactical network should be able to reflect the characteristics of the tactical network,such as a limited environment,failure,and hierarchical unit structure.In this paper,we propose a proxy-based hierarchical distributedmobilitymanagement scheme,which is highly focused on tactical networks.Considering the characteristics of tactical networks,the proposed scheme is composed of the following:1)a proxy-based method,2)a distributed mobility management method that synchronizes a mobility database between entities,and 3)a method of managing mobility by dividing the tactical network into upper and lower layers.Mathematical analysis and modeling and simulation results demonstrate that the method outperforms the existing state-of-the-art method in overcoming entity failure,handover cost,and delay in tactical environments.
