Use of ^(137)Cs and ^(210)Pb_(ex) fallout radionuclides for spatial soil erosion and redistribution assessment on steeply sloping agricultural highlands

The steeply sloping agricultural highlands in Korea have severe soil *** of both soil erosion and sedimentation in these highlands is necessary to make plans for soil-conservation measures,but it is not feasible using existing soil-erosion *** study measured the site-specific concentrations of ^(137)Cs and ^(210)Pb_(ex) on both a highland slope(33%slope)and a reference site(undisturbed flat area)to estimate soil erosion and *** use of the fallout radionuclide(FRN)method was evaluated to see if it is a suitable method for characterizing soil *** were compared with those obtained with the Universal Soil Loss equation(USLe),which is an empirical model that estimates annual soil *** average concentrations of ^(137)Cs and ^(210)Pb_(ex) at the reference site were 11.57±0.24 Bq kg^(-1) and 59.74±4.2 Bq kg^(-1),*** of ^(137)Cs and ^(210)Pb_(ex) in the experimental slope were 16.4%and 10.8%,respectively,of those at the reference *** inventories were lower at the upper point of the slope than those at the basal point of the *** of ^(137)Cs and ^(210)Pb_(ex) were significantly correlated with available phosphorus,organic matter,CeC,and exchangeable *** of soil redistribution rate using ^(137)Cs and ^(210)Pb_(ex) showed site-specific variations at different points along the slope,and respective ranges were^(-1)7.46~-207.51 and 1.55~-581.38 Mgha^(-1) yr^(-1),which indicated that more erosion was assessed by ^(210)Pb_(ex) than by ^(137)*** analysis showed that soil erosion occurred along the entire slope,except for the bottom point of the slope where 1.55 Mgha^(-1) yr^(-1) of sediment *** USLe provided a single value of the average annual soil loss in the entire slope,which was either 166 or 398 Mgha^(-1) yr^(-1),depending on the soil erodibility factor(soil series factor and calculated factor from soil sample analysis)used in t

Soil erosion is a complex process involving multiple natural and anthropic agents,causing the deterio-ration of multiple components comprising soil ***,we provide an estimate of the spatial pat-terns of cropland susceptibility to erosion by sheet and rill,gully,wind,tillage,and root crops harvesting and report the co-occurrence of these processes using a multi-model *** addition,to give a global overview of potential future changes,we identify the locations where these multiple concurrent soil erosion processes may be expected to intersect with projected dry/wet climate changes by *** a modelled 1.48 billion hectares(B ha)of global cropland,our results indicate that 0.56 B ha(-36%of the total area)are highly susceptible(classes 4 and 5)to a single erosion process,0.27 B ha(-18%of the total area)to two processes and 0.02 B ha(1.4%of the total area)to three or more *** estimated 0.82 B ha of croplands are susceptible to possible increases in water(0.68 B ha)and wind(0.14 B ha)*** contend that the presented set of estimates represents a basis for enhancing our founda-tional knowledge on the geography of soil erosion at the global *** generated insight on multiple erosion processes can be a useful starting point for decision-makers working with ex-post and ex-ante policy evaluation of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 15(Life on Land)***,this work provides the hitherto most comprehensive assessment of soil erosion risks at the global scale,based on state-of-the-art models.

Ru/NiMnB spherical cluster pillar for highly proficient green hydrogen electrocatalyst at high current density

Advanced OeR/HeR electrocatalytic alternatives are crucial for the wide adaptation of green hydrogen ***,Ru/NiMnB spherical cluster pillar （SCP）,denoted as Ru/NiMnB,is synthesized using a combination of electro-deposition and hydrothermal *** investigation of Ru doping in the NiMnB matrix revealed significant improvements in electrocatalytic *** Ru/NiMnB SCPs demonstrate superior OeR/HeR activity with low overpotentials of 150 and 103 mV at 50mA/cm2in 1 M KOH,making them highly competitive with state-of-the-art ***,the Ru/NiMnB SCPs exhibit a low 2-e cell voltage of 2.80 V at ultra-high current density of 2,000 m A/cm2in 1 M KOH,outperforming the standard benchmark electrodes of RuO2||Pt/C,thereby positioning Ru/NiMnB as one of the best bifunctional *** SCPs exhibit exceptional high-current characteristics,stability and corrosion resistance,as evidenced by continuous operation at 1,000 mA/cm2high-current density for over 150 h in 6 M KOH at elevated temperatures under harsh industrial *** a small amount of Ru incorporation significantly enhances the electrocatalytic performances of NiMnB,attributed to increased active sites and improved intrinsic properties such as conductivity,adsorption/desorption capability and reaction ***,Ru/NiMnB SCPs present a promising bi-functional electrode concept for efficient green H2production.

Uncertainty Assessment of Soil erosion Model Using Particle Filtering

Recent advances in computer with geographic information system(GIS) technologies have allowed modelers to develop physics-based models for modeling soil erosion processes in time and ***, it has been widely recognized that the effect of uncertainties on model predictions may be more significant when modelers apply such models for their own modeling *** of uncertainty involved in modeling include data, model structural, and parameter *** deal with the uncertain parameters of a catchment-scale soil erosion model(CSeM) and assess simulation uncertainties in soil erosion, particle filtering modeling(PF) is introduced in the *** proposed method, CSeM-PF, estimates parameters of non-linear and non-Gaussian systems, such as a physics-based soil erosion model by assimilating observation data such as discharge and sediment discharge sequences at *** provides timevarying feasible parameter sets as well as uncertainty bounds of outputs while traditional automatic calibration techniques result in a time-invariant global optimal parameter ***-PF was applied to a small mountainous catchment of the Yongdamdam in Korea for soil erosion modeling and uncertainty assessment for three historical typhoon ***, the most optimal parameter sets and uncertainty bounds of simulation of both discharge and sediment discharge at each time step of the study events are provided.

The likelihood of having a serum PSA level of ≥ 2.5 or ≥ 4.0 ng ml^-1 according to obesity in a screened Korean population

This study aimed to determine if lower serum total prostate-specific antigen （PSA） levels in obese Korean men affect prostate cancer （PCa） screening, as an increased body mass index （BMI） is inversely associated with the PSA level. Between March 2007 and December 2012, 22 208 native Korean men who were eligible to receive a serum PSA test were recruited. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds of an ＇abnormal＇ PSA （ ≥ 2.5 or/〉 4.0 ng ml^- 1） in these men （age： 45-75 years, PSA 〈 10 ng ml^-1） based on BMI, which was categorized as normal （BMI 〈25 kg m^-2） and obese （BMI i〉 25 kg m-2）. In all, 20 509 men （92.3%） were included in the study after applying the inclusion criteria. After controlling for age, there was a statistically significant trend towards a lower likelihood of having a serum PSA level ≥ 2.5 ng ml^-1 with an increased BMI, with obese men having an 18% lower likelihood （odds ratio： 0.823, 95% confidence interval： 0.743-0.912; P〈0.001） compared to men with a normal BMI. Obese men were approximately 82% as likely to have a PSA level ≥ 2.5 ng ml^-2 as men with a normal BMI. These results might affect PCa screening using serum total PSA. Further studies are needed to better define these results in clinical biopsy practice.

General regular shaped diagrid structures can express diverse shapes because braces are installed along the exterior faces of the structures and the structures have no columns. However, since irregular shaped structures have diverse variables, studies to assess behaviors resulting from various variables are continuously required to supplement the imperfections related to such variables. In the present study, materials elastic modulus and yield strength were selected as variables for strength that would be applied to diagrid structural systems in the form of Twisters among the irregular shaped buildings classified by Vollers and that affect the structural design of these structural systems. The purpose of this study is to conduct sensitivity analysis for axial rotation diagrid structural systems according to changes in brace angles in order to identify the design variables that have relatively larger effects and the tendencies of the sensitivity of the structures according to changes in brace angles and axial rotation angles.

A global-scale multidecadal variability driven by Atlantic multidecadal oscillation

Observational analysis shows that there is a predominant global-scale multidecadal variability(GMV) of sea-surface temperature(SST). Its horizontal pattern resembles that of the interdecadal Pacific oscillation(IPO) in the Pacific and the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation(AMO) in the Atlantic Ocean, which could affect global precipitation and temperature over the globe. Here, we demonstrate that the GMV could be driven by the AMO through atmospheric teleconnections and atmosphere–ocean coupling *** reveal a strong negative correlation when AMO leads GMV by approximately 4–8 *** experiments using a climate model driven by observed AMO signals reveal that the tropical Atlantic warm SST anomalies of AMO initiate anomalous cooling in the equatorial central-eastern Pacific through atmospheric teleconnections. Anticyclonic anomalies in the North and South Pacific induce equatorward winds along the coasts of North and South America, contributing to further cooling. The upper-ocean dynamics plays a minor role in GMV formation but contributes to a delayed response of the IPO to the AMO forcing. The possible impact of the GMV on AMO was also tested by prescribing only Pacific SST in the model; however, the model could not reproduce the observed phase relationship between the AMO and the GMV. These results support the hypothesis that the Atlantic Ocean plays a key role in the multidecadal variability of global SST.

endoscopic papillary large balloon dilation for the removal of bile duct stones

endoscopic papillary large balloon dilation(ePLBD)with endoscopic sphincterotomy(eST)has been widely used as the alternative to eST along with endoscopic mechanical lithotripsy(eML)for the removal of large or difficult bile duct ***,ePLBD without eST was recently introduced as its simplified alternative ***,we systematically searched PubMed,Medline,the Cochrane Library and eMBASe,and analyzed all gathered data of ePLBD with and without eST,respectively,by using a single standardized definition,reviewing relevant literatures,published between 2003and June 2013,where it was performed with largediameter balloons(12-20 mm).The outcomes,including the initial success rate,the rate of needs for eML,and the overall success rate,and adverse events were assessed in each and compared between both of two procedures:"ePLBD with eST"and"ePLBD without eST".A total of 2511 procedures from 30 published articles were included in ePLBD with eST,while a total of413 procedures from 3 published articles were included in ePLBD without *** the results of outcomes,the overall success rate was 96.5%in ePLBD with eST and97.2%in ePLBD without eST,showing no significant difference between both of *** initial success rate(84.0%vs 76.2%,Pe success rate of ePLBD without eML(83.2%vs 76.7%,P=0.001)was significantly higher,while the rate of use of eML was significantly lower(14.1%vs 21.6%,PePLBD with *** rate of overall adverse events,pancreatitis,bleeding,perforation,other adverse events,surgery for adverse events,and fatal adverse events were 8.3%,2.4%,3.6%,0.6%,1.7%,0.2%and 0.2%in ePLBD with eST and 7.0%,3.9%,1.9%,0.5%,0.7%,0%and 0%in ePLBD without eST,respectively,showing no significant difference between both of *** conclusion,recent accumulated results of ePLBD with or even without eST suggest that it is a safe and effective procedure for the removal of large or difficult bile duct stones without any additional risk of severe adv
