Predictive factors of survival in patients treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy for squamous cell esophageal carcinoma

AIM： The aim of the study was to evaluate the predictive factors of survival in patients with locally advanced squamous cell esophageal carcinoma （LASCOC） treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy （CRT） regimen based on the 5FU/CDDP combination. METHODS： All patients with LASCOC treated with a definitive CRT using the 5FU/CDDP combination between 1994 and 2000 were retrospectively included. Clinical complete response （CCR） to CRT was assessed by esophageal endoscopy and C-F-scan 2 mo after CRT completion. Prognostic factors of survival were assessed using univariate and multivariate analysis by the Cox regression model. RESULTS： A total of 116 patients were included in the study. A CCR to CRT was observed in 86/116 （74.1%）. The median survival was 20 mo （range 2-114） and the 5-year survival was 9.4%. Median survival of responder patients to CRT was 25 mo （range 3-114） as compared to 9 mo （range 2-81） in non-responder patients （P 〈 0.001）. In univariate analysis, survival was associated with CCR （P 〈 0.001）, WHO performance status 〈 2 （P = 0.01）, tumour length 〈 6 cm （P = 0.045） and weight loss 〈 10% was in limit of significance （P = 0.053）. In multivariate analysis, survival was dependant to CCR （P 〈 0.0001）, weight loss 〈 10% （P = 0.034） and WHO performance 〈 2 （P = 0.046）. CONCLUSION： Our results suggest that survival in patients with LASCOC b＇eated with definitive CRT was correlated to CCR, weight loss and WHO performance status.

The quality of infant flours used during the weaning age is of great importance in that it conditions the nutritional health of infants and young children. This study aimed to assess the nutritional and sanitary quality of infant flours produced in the city of Ouagadougou. This was a cross-sectional study including 11 out of 25 infant flour production units that gave their consent to partake in the study. In total, 25 infant flour samples have been collected from July to September 2021. The physicochemical and microbiological parameters were determined according to standard methods. The ANOVA analysis of variance showed significant differences between the means of the physico-chemical and the means of the microbiological parameters respectively. The results showed that 60% of proteins and 80% of lipid and total carbohydrate contents were below the authorised limits. The energy values were below the authorised limit in 88% of the cases. All instant infant flours had microbiological loads compliant with Burkinabè standards. As for infant flour to be cooked, 63.64% and 81.82% had satisfactory numbers of total coliforms and faecal coliforms respectively. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were detected in these samples with 86.36% of infant formulae having results below the recommended limit. These results show that the infant flours produced in Ouagadougou were somehow of acceptable quality. However, there is a need to improve the formulae for macronutrient contents, energy values and sanitary quality to comply with the recommendations.

APOBEC3G Role on HIV Infection in Africa: A Systematic Review

The highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) has allowed people living with HIV to live longer with a better quality of life. However, toxicity and the emergence of drug resistance arise from HAART use. Therefore, new antiretroviral therapy is needed since no cure or vaccine is available against HIV. Virus-host interaction has been proven to be important in the last decade. Host factors such as the C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5), a receptor used by HIV to penetrate host cells, have led to the discovery of the Maraviroc, which is an antiretroviral medication used in the United States. In contrast, other factors like C-X-C Motif Chemokine Receptor 4 (CXCR4) and the Apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide-like 3G (APOBEC3G), a potent host defense factor against HIV, is under investigation. APOBEC3G antiviral activity remains a possible therapeutic target against HIV. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the available evidence on the role of APOBEC3G polymorphisms and their expression on HIV infection disease progression in Africa. We used Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar and searched for relevant publications in French or English reporting on APOBEC3G polymorphisms association with HIV infection in African populations from January 2009 to May 2023. The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyzes) was used to process for reporting systematic review. Fifteen studies were included, of which seven were on APOBEC3G polymorphisms and eight were on APOBEC3G expression. Among the APOBEC3G polymorphisms, the most studied was H186R or rs8177832. The average of the minor allele frequency of H186R of APOBEC3G available for the studies included in this study was 0.29 with a 95% CI (0.172;0.401) and varied from 0.108 reported in Uganda to 0.47 recorded from Burkina Faso. A unified plasticity methodology for rate-and temperature-sensitive alloys exhibiting a non-linear kinematic hardening behavior

In this paper, a novel unified plasticity methodology is proposed to allow the coupling of rate-and temperature-sensitivity of engineering alloys as well as the non-linear kinematic hardening behavior often observed during cyclic loading. The proposed methodology is general in the sense that an arbitrary constitutive model may be chosen for the viscoplastic part, as well as the cyclic part. We adapt our model with a physically-motivated viscoplasticity flow rule and a nonlinear kinematic hardening model. In contrast with other unified plasticity models, the simplified theory involves few material parameters that can be readily calibrated from standard mechanical tests. The capabilities of the proposed theory are demonstrated for a hot rolled annealed 304 L stainless steel supplied by Vimetal Peckover. The model is tested with stress–strain curves obtained from standard tensile and cyclic uniaxial tests at various strain amplitudes and strain-rates, and good accuracy of the response is obtained for strains up to 15%, within a temperature range of 293–673 K. We note that the cyclic plasticity model in our adapted theory can be readily enhanced with ratchetting, mean stress relaxation, strain amplitude history, Masing effects or other complex capabilities.

The phenomenon called “flashover” or “eruptive fire” in forest fires is characterized by a sudden change in fire behavior: everything seems to burst into flames instantly and firefighters are overwhelmed by a sort of eruption, spreading at a speed at far several meters per second. Unfortunately it has cost several lives in the past. The reasons for such an accident always create controversy in the research field. Different theories are highlighted and especially two major axes are currently subject to discussion because they are very popular among people involved in fire-fighting. The one with regard to VOCs emissions is the best-known among firemen. Under great heat, during summer or with a fire approaching, plants emit VOCs and the more the temperature grows, the more the amount of VOCs emitted grows. Under specific conditions (essentially topographical, meteorological and atmospheric), the cloud of gas can accumulate in an appropriate zone. The concentration of VOCs may therefore reach the Lower Explosive Limit, triggering the burst of the cloud when in contact with the fire. The second theory depends on physical considerations. An example is based on a convective flow created by the fire itself. When a fire spreads on a slope, it creates an aspiration phenomenon in a way to supply the fire with oxygen. The more this phenomenon is important, the more the flames tilt and increase the rate of speed, needing even more oxygen and thus induced flow. This vicious circle can stabilize or have an erratic behavior to trigger off a fire eruption. This article presents these two theories, and especially the new advances on this research subject.

Rapid HPLC Method for Determination of Parachloroaniline in Chlorhexidine Antiseptic Agent in Mouthrinses, Ophthalmic and Skin Solution

We described a simple and rapid method to quantify simultaneously chlorhexidine (CHD) and its major metabolite, para Chloroaniline (pCA) by HPLC with UV detection without the additional need of mobile-phase amine modifiers or ion-pairing reagents, with good resolution between pCA and CHD, symmetry peak of the compound and short run time. HPLC-UV analyses were performed using a Dionex? Summit liquid chromatograph (Dionex Corp, Sunnyvale, CA, USA). Chromatographic separations were carried out on a Luna? 150 mm×3 mm i.d. column packed with 3 μm CN (cyano) particles (Phenomenex?), guarded by an on-line filter. Mobile phase consist of methanol:water with sodium chloride with 0.02% of formic acid (55:45). Wavelengths for pCA and for CHD are 238 and 255 nm respectively. Influence of methanol and of sodium chloride content in the eluant has been studied. Linearity of CHD is very good, from 0.5 up to 21.2 μg/l while linearity of pCA is in the range of 0.05 to 10 μg/l with correlation coefficients above 0.999. Resolution between the components is above 4, asymmetry is about 1.3 and 1.7 for pCA and CHD respectively and the run time is less than 5 minutes. This method has been applied to CHD solution of different medical devices. No interference has been reported, and the analysis of direct injection of solution, without any treatment is achieved in less than five *** conclusion, we present a validated method for dosage of CHD and its major impurity pCA, known to be carcinogen, available into medical products or medicinal device for in-vitro diagnostic.

Experimental and Finite Element Analysis of a T-Joint Welding

This paper presents the Finite Element （FE） modeling of a two-seam welding process for a T-joint with a V chamfer preparation： The aim of the model is to predict the deformations, distortions and residual stresses resulting from the welding of the plates and experiments have been carried out in order to compare to the FE model. The ＂birth and death＂ method is used in ANSYS to simulate the filler metal deposition and the heat generation and weld pool simulation are conducted accordingly with the double ellipsoid configuration as proposed by Goldak et al. The model takes into consideration the temperature dependent non-linear material properties and uses a new formulation to compute the temperature dependent combined coefficient of heat loss. Improvements in the calculation are achieved by combining two types of meshing. The FE simulation is divided into two consecutive parts： the thermal simulation followed by the structural simulation. The results of the numerical model are compared to experiments.

Eruptive fires are one of the main causes of human losses in forest fire fighting. The sudden change in fire behaviour due to a fire eruption is extremely dangerous for fire-fighters because it is unpredictable. Very little literature is available to support either modelling or occurrence prediction for this phenomenon. In this study, an unsteady physical model of fire spread is detailed, which describes the initiation and development of eruptive fires with an induced wind sub-model. The latter phenomenon is proposed as the mainspring of fire eruptions. Induced wind is proportional to the rate of spread and the rate of spread is in a non-linear relationship with induced wind. This feedback can converge or diverge depending on the conditions. The model allows both explaining why an eruption can occur and predicting explicitly its occurrence according to meteorological conditions, topographic parameters, fuel bed properties and fire front width. The model is tested by comparing its results to a set of experiments carried out at laboratory scale and during an outdoor wildfire, the Kornati accident.

Effect of Farming Practices on Honey Production in Boundary of Gishwati Forest National Park

Pesticides and inorganic fertilizers applied in agriculture are key factors which affect biodiversity, especially bees, butterfly and other pollinators. Therefore, this study assessed the effects of farming practices on honey production in boundary of Gishwati Forest National Park in Rwanda. Survey was conducted to collect data from 2000 year to 2018 year from 51 members grouped in UNICOAPIGI beekeeping and 73 members of JYAMBERE agricultural cooperatives to establish the impact of agriculture practice on honey production. The results showed that the change in agricultural inputs from 2000 to 2018 (R2 = 0.901) resulted in high corn yield and consequently induced honey reduction (R2 = 0.75). The correlation coefficients for pesticides and inorganic fertilizers used in corn production had strong negative effects on honey production {γ3 = -0.06 for chemical fertilizers (X3) and γ4 = -0.42 for pesticides (X4)}. JYAMBERE Agricultural cooperative with 75.78% of farmers reported that they used pesticides and inorganic fertilizers in corn production. However, 51 beekeepers grouped in UNICOAPIGI cooperative reported a serious decline of honey production from 27 Kg to 6 Kg of honey per hive after the 2008 year, which is suspected to be mainly the effect from applications of pesticides and fertilizers in corn production. The findings illustrated that the roles of honeybees as pollinator exposed them to toxic, especially pesticides applied in agriculture in boundary of Gishwati national forest reserve, therefore, beekeepers proposed that protection of forests and park is not only sufficient to reach sustainable conservation of bee biodiversity but also requires determining the land use pattern and socio-political factors around the Gishwati forest reserve.
