In situ plasmonic optical fiber detection of the state of charge of supercapacitors for renewable energy storage

In situ and continuous monitoring of electrochemical activity is key to understanding and evaluating the operation mechanism and efficiency of energy storage ***,this task remains *** example,the present methods are not capable of providing the real-time information about the state of charge(SOC)of the energy storage devices while in *** address this,a novel approach based on an electrochemical surface plasmon resonance(SPR)optical fiber sensor is proposed *** approach offers the capability of in situ comprehensive monitoring of the electrochemical activity(the electrode potential and the SOC)of supercapacitors(used as an example).The sensor adopted is a tilted fiber Bragg grating imprinted in a commercial single-mode fiber and coated with a nanoscale gold film for high-efficiency SPR *** conventional“bulk”detection methods for electrode activity,our approach targets the“localized”(sub-μm-scale)charge state of the ions adjacent to the electrode interface of supercapacitors by monitoring the properties of the SPR wave on the fiber sensor surface located adjacent to the electrode.A stable and reproducible correlation between the real-time charge–discharge cycles of the supercapacitors and the optical transmission of the optical fiber has been ***,the method proposed is inherently immune to temperature cross-talk because of the presence of environmentally insensitive reference features in the optical transmission spectrum of the ***,this particular application is ideally suited to the fundamental qualities of optical fiber sensors,such as their compact size,flexible shape,and remote operation capability,thereby opening the way for other opportunities for electrochemical monitoring in various hard-to-reach spaces and remote environments.

In situ and continuous monitoring of thermal effects is essential for understanding photo-induced catalytic processes at catalyst's ***,existing techniques are largely unable to capture the rapidly changing temperatures occurring in sub-μm layers at liquid-solid interfaces exposed to *** address this,a sensing system based on a gold-coated conventional single-mode optical fiber with a tilted fiber Bragg grating inscribed in the fiber core is proposed and *** spectral transmission from these devices is made up of a dense comb of narrowband resonances that can differentiate between localized temperatures rapid changes at the catalyst's surface and those of the *** using the gold coating of the fiber as an electrode in an electrochemical reactor and exposing it to light,thermal effects in photo-induced catalysis at the interface can be decoded with a temperature resolution of 0.1℃and a temporal resolution of 0.1 sec,without perturbing the catalytic operation that is measured *** a demonstration,stable and reproducible correlations between the light-to-heat conversion and catalytic activities over time were measured for two different catalysis processes(linear and nonlinear).These kinds of sensing applications are ideally suited to the fundamental qualities of optical fiber sensors,such as their compact size,flexible shape,and remote measurement capability,thereby opening the way for various thermal monitoring in hard-to-reach spaces and rapid catalytic reaction processes.

We propose and demonstrate a superfine multiresonant fiber grating sensor characterized by superior spectral resolution and enhanced sensing capabilities. This sensor can be easily constructed by inserting a tilted fiber Bragg grating(TFBG) probe into a silica capillary filled with a refractive index(RI) matching oil. As the fiber cladding,the RI-matching oil, and the capillary all have the same RI, the cladding modes excited by the TFBG can extend into the RI-matching oil and capillary, facilitating surface sensing outside the capillary. Our study shows that the number of cladding modes increases, and the resonance spectrum becomes denser as the outer diameter of the capillary gets larger. As a result, the detection accuracy of RI based on mode cutoff wavelength identification can be improved. Particularly, with a capillary diameter of 1 mm, the heightened spectral density enhances refractometric accuracy by nearly an order of magnitude compared to the intrinsic TFBG. The superfine multiresonant fiber grating sensor proposed here is flexible in configuration and easy to fabricate, providing a new strategy for developing new fiber sensing devices. ? 2024 Chinese Laser Press

Multiple mode resonance shifts in tilted fiber Bragg gratings(TFBGs)are used to simultaneously measure the thickness and the refractive index of TiO_(2) thin films formed by Atomic Layer Deposition(ALD)on optical *** is achieved by comparing the experimental wavelength shifts of 8 TFBG resonances during the deposition process with simulated shifts from a range of thicknesses(T)and values of the real part of the refractive index(n).The minimization of an error function computed for each(n,T)pair then provides a solution for the thickness and refractive index of the deposited film and,a posteriori,to verify the deposition rate throughout the process from the time evolution of the wavelength shift *** of the results were carried out with a conventional ellipsometer on flat witness samples deposited simultaneously with the fiber and with scanning electron measurements on cut pieces of the fiber *** final values obtained by the TFBG(n=2.25,final thickness of 185 nm)were both within 4%of the validation *** approach provides a method to measure the formation of nanoscale dielectric coatings on fibers in situ for applications that require precise thicknesses and refractive indices,such as the optical fiber sensor ***,the TFBG can also be used as a process monitor for deposition on other substrates for deposition methods that produce uniform coatings on dissimilar shaped substrates,such as ALD.

Causes of Infertility of Couples Residing in Libreville

Introduction: According to the World Health Organization, globally one in six people experience infertility in their lifetime. Infertility is considered as a major and global public health issue. In most cases, women bear the burden of infertility to protect the male ego. Although men and women are equally likely to have fertility problems. The aim of this study was to identify the causes of infertility of couples residing in Libreville. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study performed over 2 years, from 1st January 2021 to 31st December 2022. Data was obtained from 162 couples attending the assisted reproduction department of the mother and child hospitals in Libreville. Statistical analysis was done using IBM SPSS Statistics version 22.0 software. Results: During the study period, 28.5% of couples could afford IVF treatment. The average for woman age was 39.1 ± 4.06 while the average age for male patients was 41.53 ± 7.08 years with minimum and maximum age of 34 et 66 years. More than half (58.6%) of female partners were employed in the public sector. Half of the male partners (50%) were employed in the private sector. The median duration of infertility was 6 years. Approximately 49.4% of couples were diagnosed with primary infertility. The most common causes of infertility in female patients were Fallopian tubes obstruction (53.2%), uterine factors (24.2%) and hormonal problems (19.6%). With regards to male factors infertility, testicular causes were predominant (53.6%). Oligoasthenoteratozoospermia were the major semen abnormalities (55.7%) found after semen evaluation. Both male and female partners were sub-fertile in 47.5% of cases. Unexplained infertility was found in 11% of couples. Conclusion: This study showed that the diagnostic of infertility faced by couples residing in Libreville should involve both male and female partner.

Introduction: Stillbirths are estimated at 2 million each year, of which more than 40% occur during labour. Our objective was to study the epidemiological aspects of stillbirth and neonatal deaths in the delivery room in our health facility. Patients and methods: Prospective, descriptive and analytical study, conducted at the Jeanne Ebori Foundation Mother-Child University Hospital over 4 years (January 2019-December 2022). All neonatal deaths in the delivery room or foetal death in utero, were included. Results: Among the 18,346 deliveries performed, 512 newborns were declared dead in the delivery room (27.9‰ live births), divided into in utero foetal death (19.0‰) and immediate neonatal death (8.9‰). The mean age was 34.3 weeks of amenorrhea. The rate of preterm birth was 60.4%. The sex ratio was 1.1. The average weight was 2186.6. The main causes were vascular (46.1%), foetal (20.2%), adnexal (17.1%) and asphyxia per partum (16.6%). Foetal causes were more likely to result in IUFD than other causes (OR = 6.4 [2.4 - 15.7], p < 0.001). After birth, partum asphyxia was more likely to lead to death before 15 minutes of life than other causes (OR = 11 [6.1 - 18.9], p Conclusion: The causes of stillbirth and early neonatal mortality are dominated by maternal vascular pathologies. However, the proportion of childbirth-related causes remains worrying. Better monitoring of pregnancy and labour will minimize this prevalence in our hospital.

Introduction: Breast cancer is currently the most common malignant tumour in women worldwide. Objective: To evaluate conservative treatment of breast cancer and oncoplasty at the teaching hospital Mother and Child of Jeanne Ebori Foundation (CHUMEFJE). Patients and methods: This is an observational, descriptive study, which took place from August 2019 to December 2021 at CHUMEFJE. Data were collected using patients’ medical records, and operative and pathological anatomy reports. Results: Conservative treatment and oncoplasty were performed in 12 (34.2%) patients. Of these patients, 8 (66.7%) benefited from an external technique and 2 (16.7%) from a pamectomy. Post-operative complications were dominated by lymphocele in 5 (41.6%) patients. Ten (83.3%) patients were satisfied with the post-operative aesthetic result. At the time of updating the records, 1 (8.3%) patient had died and 11 (91.7%) were alive. Conclusion: Conservative treatment and oncoplasty are giving satisfactory results at the CHUMEFJE in Libreville.

The placenta abruptio is an extremely serious pathology which involves the maternal-fetal prognosis. We report the case of a 19-year-old patient who consulted for abdominopelvic pain associated with heavy vaginal bleeding on 19SA in a context of arterial hypertension. The symptomatology suddenly worsened with the onset of hemorrhagic shock, which prompted an emergency hysterotomy. The diagnosis of placenta abruptio grade III b of SHER was evoked. Uterine atony was objectified intraoperatively and uterine compression by the B-Lynch technique was performed. The evolution of the patient was favorable after a stay of 5 days in intensive care.

Introduction: The end of pregnancy is a high-risk period for both mother and foetus. Rigorous monitoring can prevent complications before delivery. Materials and Method: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional observational study. It took place in the delivery room of the Teacher hospital Mother and Child of Jeanne Ebori Fondation from the 01 October 2020 to 01 October 2021. All patients followed at the Functional Investigation Centre (FIC) of the CHUMEFJE and who gave birth in that same hospital were included. Data were collected on the basis of pregnancy diaries, the fic register and delivery room registers. They were analysed using SPSS Statistical Software. Results: During the period of our study, 4086 parturients arrived in the delivery room. Of these, 150 were followed up at the FIC, giving a prevalence of 3.7%. The majority of parturients (48%) had only one prenatal contact. 6 (4%) patients underwent pelvic scans, and 4 (2.6%) presented with a narrowed pelvis. A vaginal delivery was performed in 80% of cases, and of the caesarean sections, 9 (30%) could be scheduled. The maternal prognosis was marred by one post-partum complication of hypertension, and newborns with poor adaptation to life outside the womb accounted for 3.3% of cases. Conclusion: The Functional Investigation Centre makes it possible to detect anomalies at the end of pregnancy with a view to better planning of delivery.
