Three-dimensional fuzzy graphene ultra-microelectrodes for subcellular electrical recordings

Microelectrode arrays(MEAs)have enabled investigation of cellular networks at sub-millisecond temporal ***,current MEAs are limited by the large electrode footprint since reducing the electrode’s geometric area to sub-cellular dimensions leads to a significant increase in impedance thus affecting its recording *** report a breakthrough ultra-microelectrodes platform by leveraging the outstanding surface-to-volume ratio of nanowire-templated out-of-plane synthesized three-dimensional fuzzy graphene(NT-3DFG).The enormous surface area of NT-3DFG leads to 140-fold reduction in electrode impedance compared to bare Au microelectrodes,thus enabling scaling down the geometric size by 625-fold to ca.2µm×2µ*** out-of-plane morphology of NT-3DFG leads to a tight seal with the cell membrane thus enabling recording of electrical signals with high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)of>*** work highlights the possibility to push the limits of the conventional MEA technology to enable electrophysiological investigation at sub-cellular level without the need of any surface *** presented approach would greatly impact our basic understanding of signal transduction within a single cell as well as complex cellular assemblies.

Background:Psycho social factors predict recurrent inj ury and return to preinjury level of performance following orthopedic injury but are poorly understood following *** management protocols prioritize physical measures of ***,the objective of this study was to describe the psychosocial factors associated with return to sport(RTS) and how they are measured in athletes who sustained a ***:MEDLINE,Embase,APA PsycINFO,CINAHL,and SPORTDiscus were searched through February 2,*** studies included original peer-reviewed publications describing psychosocial factors associated with RTS following a diagnosed *** primary outcome was scales or measures employed and/or key thematic ***:Of the 3615 studies identified,10 quantitative cohort studies(Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine Level-3) representing 2032 athletes(85% male;high-school and collegiate collision/contact athletes) and 4 qualitative studies representing 66 athletes(74% male;70% American football;aged 9-28 years) were *** identified 3 overarching themes and 10 outcome measures related to psychosocial factors associated with RTS following concussion:(a) fear(e.g,of recurrent concussion,of RTS,of losing playing status);(b) emotional factors(e.g,depression,anxiety,perceived stress,mental health,disturbance mood);and(c) contextual factors(e.g,social support,pressure,sense of identity).Conclusion:Although current medical clearance decisions prioritize physical measures of recovery,evidence suggests diverse psychosocial factors influence RTS following *** remains unclear which psychosocial factors contribute to a successful RTS,including the influence of sex/gender and *** studies should evaluate the association of psychological readiness with physical measures of recovery at medical clearance,preinjury level of performance,and risk of recurrent concussion to support RTS clinical decision-making.

Over the past 5 years there has been a rapid increase in the use of microarray technology in the field of cancer research, The majority of studies use microarray analysis of tumor biopsies for profiling of molecular characteristics in an attempt to produce robust classifiers for prognosis. There are now several published gene sets that have been shown to predict for aggressive forms of breast cancer, where patients are most likely to benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy and tumors most likely to develop distant metastases, or be resistant to treatment. The number of publications relating to the use of microarrays for analysis of normal tissue damage, after cancer treatment or genotoxic exposure, is much more limited. A PublVled literature search was conducted using the following keywords and combination of terms： radiation, normal tissue, microarray, gene expression profiling, prediction. With respect to normal tissue radiation injury, microarrays have been used in three ways：（1） to generate gene signatures to identify sensitive and resistant populations （prognosis）; （2） to identify sets of biomarker genes for estimating radiation exposure, either accidental or as a result of terrorist attack （diagnosis）; （3） to identify genes and pathways involved in tissue response to injury （mechanistic）. In this article we will review all （relevant） papers that covered our literature search criteria on microarray technology as it has been applied to normal tissue radiation biology and discuss how successful this has been in defining predisposition markers for radiation sensitivity or how it has helped us to unravel molecular mechanisms leading to acute and late tissue toxicity. We also discuss some of the problems and limitations in application and interpretation of such data.

Background: Active video games(AVGs) encourage whole body movements to interact or control the gaming system, allowing the opportunity for skill development. Children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD) show decreased fundamental movement skills in comparison with their typically developing(TD) peers and might benefit from this approach. This pilot study investigates whether playing sports AVGs can increase the actual and perceived object control(OC) skills of 11 children with ASD aged 6–10 years in comparison to 19 TD children of a similar *** was a secondary ***: Actual(Test of Gross Motor Development) and perceived OC skills(Pictorial Scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence for Young Children) were assessed before and after the intervention(6 × 45 min).Results: Actual skill scores were not improved in either group. The ASD group improved in perceived skill. All children completed the required dose and parents reported the intervention was ***: The use of AVGs as a play-based intervention may not provide enough opportunity for children to perform the correct movement patterns to influence skill. However, play of such games may influence perceptions of skill ability in children with ASD, which could improve motivation to participate in physical activities.

The field of acousto-optical tomography （AOT） for medical applications began in the 1990s and has since developed multiple techniques for the detection of ultrasound-modulated light. Light becomes frequency shifted as it travels through an ultrasound beam. This ＂tagged＂ light can be detected and used for focused optical imaging. Here, we present a comprehensive overview of the techniques that have developed since around 2011 in the field of biomedical AOT. This includes how AOT has advanced by taken advantage of the research conducted in the ultrasound, as well as, the optical fields. Also, simulations and reconstruction algorithms have been formulated specifically for AOT imaging over this time period. Future progression of AOT relies on its ability to provide significant contributions to in vivo imaging for biomedical applications. We outline the challenges that AOT still faces to make in vivo imaging possible and what has been accomplished thus far, as well as possible future directions.

Optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)is a rapid and non-invasive technique for imaging vasculature in the *** OCTA can produce high-resolution cross-sectional images and allow depth-resolved analysis for accurate localization of pathology of interest,it has become a promising method for anterior segment ***,OCTA offers a more patient-friendly alternative to the conventional invasive dye-based fluorescent ***,conventional OCTA systems are typically designed and optimized for the posterior segment of the eye,and thus using OCTA for anterior segment imaging can present several difficulties and *** this review,we summarized the recent developments and clinical applications in anterior segment OCTA(AS-OCTA)imaging,such as for the cornea,iris,sclera and *** also compared commercially available OCTA systems,discussed the limitations of adapting current OCTA technology for the anterior segment imaging,and proposed possible future directions for AS-OCTA ***-OCTA provides potential for future clinical applications such as diagnosis of corneal and iris pathologies,pre-operative surgical planning,assessment of new antiangiogenic therapeutics or evaluation of limbal stem cell *** further development,OCTA for anterior segment imaging in the clinics may become common in the near future.

Attitudes and diagnostic practice in low back pain:A qualitative study amongst Greek and British physiotherapists

AIM To explore current diagnostic practice and attitudes of Greek and United Kingdom physiotherapists(PTs)on assessing low back pain(LBP)*** Three focus groups were undertaken,followed by a structured questionnaire-type survey comprising 23 health professionals and a random stratified sample of 150 PTs,***-nine themes relating to LBP diagnostic practice *** were then given to 30 British PTs assessing their level of agreement with their Greek *** was performed by percentage agreements andχ2 *** The survey was divided into three subsections;PTs’attitudes on LBP assessment,patients’attitudes and diagnostic/healthcare issues,each constituting 14,7 and 8 statements,*** half of the statements fell within the 30%-80%agreement between Greece and United Kingdom whereas,5 statements reported low(90%)PT percentage *** across British and Greek PTs were detected in history taking methods and in the way PTs feel patients perceive physiotherapy practice whereas,re-assessment was undertaken less frequently in *** according to 91%of the Greek PTs is considered a“privilege”which is exclusive for doctors in Greece(only 17%British PTs agreed)and is accompanied with a great overuse of medical *** percent of Greek PTs(compared to 0%of British)consider themselves as“executers”,being unable to interfere with treatment plan,possibly implying lack of *** Although similarities on history taking methods and on patients’attitudes were detected across both groups,gross differences were found in re-assessment procedures and diagnostic issues between Greek and British physiotherapists,highlighting differences in service delivery and professional autonomy.
