Paraspinal strength and electromyographic fatigue in patients with sub-acute back pain and controls:Reliability,clinical applicability and between-group differences

Prediction of salinity intrusion in the sheltered estuary of Terengganu River in Malaysia using 1-D empirical intrusion model

Generally one dimensional （l-D） empirical salinity intrusion model is limited to natural alluvial estuary. However, this study attempts to investigate its ability to model a sheltered alluvial estuary of the Terengganu River in Malaysia. The constructed breakwater at the mouth of the river shelters the estuary from direct influence of the open sea. The salinity density along the estuary was collected during the wet and dry seasons for scenarios before and after the constructed breakwater. Moreover, the freshwater discharges, tidal elevations and bathymetry data were also measured as model inputs. A good fit was demonstrated between simulated and observed variables, namely salinity distribution and intrusion length for both scenarios. Thus, the results show that 1-D empirical salinity model can be utilized for sheltered estuarine condition at the Terengganu Estuary, but with an appropriate determination of an initial point. Furthermore, it was observed that the salinity intrusion in the study area is largely dependent on the freshwater discharge rather than tidal elevation fluctuations. The scale of the salinity intrusion length in the study area is proportional to the river discharge of the -1/2 power. It was appeared that the two lines of the 1-D empirical salinity model and discharge power based equation fitted well to each other, with the average predicted minimum freshwater discharge of 150 m^3/s is going to be required to maintain acceptable salinity levels during high water slack （HWS） near the water intake station, which is located at 10.63 km from river mouth.

Predator-prey size relationships are among the most important patterns underlying the structure and function of ecological ***,these relationships have already been shown to be important for understanding patterns of macroevolution and differential extinction in the terrestrial vertebrate fossil *** isotope analysis(SIA)is a powerful remote approach to examining animal diets and *** approach is based on the principle that isotope compositions of consumer tissues reflect those of their *** systems where resource isotope compositions are distributed along a body size gradient,SIA could be used to reconstruct predator-prey size *** analyzed stable carbon isotope distributions amongst mammalian herbivores in extant and Plio-Pleistocene African savanna assemblages,and show that the range ofδ^(13)C values among mammalian prey species(herbivores and rodents)increases with body mass(BM),because C_(4) plant feeding(essentially grazing)is more common among larger ***,δ^(13)C values of mammalian carnivores in these systems are related to species’BM,reflecting a higher average C_(4) prey component in the diets of larger-bodied *** pattern likely emerges because only the largest carnivores in these systems have regular access to the C_(4) prey base,whereas smaller carnivores do ***δ^(13)C-BM relationship observed in mammalian carnivores is a potentially powerful approach for reconstructing and parameterizing predator-prey size relationships in contemporary and fossil savanna assemblages,and for interpreting how various behavioral,ecological and environmental factors influence prey size selection.

Descemet＇s membrane detachments post cataract surgery：a management paradigm

Descemet’s membrane detachments （DMD） are relatively common after cataract surgery and most do not require any treatment. However, if large DMD are not treated appropriately, significant visual morbidity can ensue. We aim to develop a guideline for the management of DMD post cataract surgery based on a retrospective review of all cases encountered at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, Australia over a 4-year period from 2010 to 2014. We suggest conservative management if the visual axis is not involved; however, after 3mo surgical intervention may be warranted to prevent corneal sequelae. In cases where the visual axis is involved we suggest early intervention with air tamponade. The main risk factor for irreversible corneal oedema and subsequent endothelial transplant appears to be direct endothelial trauma rather than the DMD itself.

Impact of a new aggressive nutrition policy incorporating early introduction of parenteral nutrition and mother's own milk on growth of preterm infants

Trichomoniasis is the most common, sexually transmitted infection. It is caused by the flagellated protozoan parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Symptoms include vaginitis and infections have been associated with preterm delivery, low birth weight and increased infant mortality, as well as predisposing to HIV/AIDS and cervical cancer. Trichomoniasis has the highest prevalence and incidence of any sexually transmitted infection. The 5-nitroimidazole drugs, of which metronidazole is the most prescribed, are the only approved, effective drugs to treat trichomoniasis. Resistance against metronidazole is frequently reported and cross resistance among the family of 5-nitroimidazole drugs is common, leaving no alternative for treatment, with some cases remaining unresolved. The mechanism of metronidazole resistance in T. vaginalis from treatment failures is not well understood, unlike resistance which is developed in the laboratory under increasing metronidazole pressure. Stakeholder responses to mandating environmental,social and governance reporting in Hong Kong China

We examine stakeholders’comment letters regarding the Hong Kong China Exchange’s(HKEX)2015 Consultation Paper,which proposed mandating ESG reporting in Hong Kong *** test for significant differences in responses between stakeholder groups and whether the HKEX’s decision was consistent with stakeholders’preferences in the consultation *** comment letters submitted by six lobbying groups—preparers,investors,the accounting profession,NGOs,other institutions and individuals—we analyze survey responses using textual analysis software and statistical *** find that users and the accounting profession participated more than *** also find that preparers and users took different positions on mandating ESG reporting when lobbying the HKEX,whereas preparers and the accounting profession advocated similar ***,we find a significant association between stakeholder groups’preferences and the HKEX’s decision on most proposed changes.
