Understanding of fundam.ntal processes and prediction of optim.l param.ters during the horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing process results in econom.cally effective im.rovem.nt of oil and natural gas extraction. Although m.dern analytical and com.utational m.dels can capture fracture growth, there is a lack of experim.ntal data on spontaneous im.ibition and wettability in oil and gas reservoirs for the validation of further m.del developm.nt. In this work, we used neutron im. aging to m.asure the spontaneous im.ibition of water into fractures of Eagle Ford shale with known geom.tries and fracture orientations. An analytical solution for a set of nonlinear second-order diffe- rential equations was applied to the m.asured im.ibition data to determ.ne effective contact angles. The analytical solution fit the m.asured im.ibition data reasonably well and determ.ned effective con- tact angles that were slightly higher than static contact angles due to effects of in-situ changes in veloci- ty, surface roughness, and heterogeneity of m.neral surfaces on the fracture surface. Additionally, sm.ll fracture widths m.y have retarded im.ibition and affected m.del fits, which suggests that aver- age fracture widths are not satisfactory for m.deling im.ibition in natural system..

AIm.To use m.croarray-based m.RNA profiling of colonic m.cosal biopsies from.patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn's disease (CD), and controls in order to identify new potential m.RNA biom.rkers in inflam.atory bowel disease. m.THODS:Colonic m.cosal pinch biopsies from.the descending part were obtained endoscopically from.patients with active UC or CD, quiescent UC or CD, as well as healthy controls. Total RNA was isolated and m.RNA expression assessed using the m.RNA m.croarray Geniom.Biochip m.RNA Hom. sapiens (Febit Gm.H, Heidelberg, Germ.ny). Data analysis was carried out by principal com.onent analysis and projection to latent structure-discrim.nant analysis using the SIm.A-P+12 software package (Um.trics, Um.a, Sweden). The m.croarray data were subsequently validated by quantitative real-tim. polym.rase chain reaction (qPCR) perform.d on colonic tissue sam.les from.active UC patients (n = 20), patients with quiescent UC (n = 19), and healthy controls (n = 20). The qPCR results were analyzed with m.nn-WhitneyU *** silico prediction analysis were perform.d to identify potential m.RNA target genes and the predicted m.RNA targets were then com.ared with all UC associated susceptibility genes reported in the literature. RESULTS:The colonic m.cosal m.RNA transcriptom. differs significantly between UC and controls, UC and CD, as well as between UC patients with m.cosal inflam.ation and those without. However, no clear differences in the transcriptom. of patients with CD and controls were found. The m.RNAs with the strongest differential power were identified (m.R-20b, m.R-99a, m.R-203, m.R-26b, and m.R-98) and found to be upregulated m.re than a 10-fold in active UC as com.ared to quiescent UC, CD, and controls. Two m.RNAs, m.R-125b-1* and let-7e*, were up-regulated m.re than 5-fold in quiescent UC com.ared to active UC, CD, and controls. A m.n with past lithium.use for m.re than 15 years, but off lithium.for two years and not carrying the diagnosis of diabetes m.llitus or nephrogenic diabetes insipidus(NDI), presented with com. and hyperglycem.c hyperosm.lar state(HHS). Following correction of HHS, he developed persistent hypernatrem.a accom.anied by large volum.s of urine with low osm.lality and no response to desm.pressin injections. Urine osm.lality rem.ined m.Osm.kg after injection of vasopressin. Im.rovem.nt in serum.sodium.concentration followed the intake of large volum.s of water plus adm.nistration of am.loride and hydrochlorothiazide. Severe hyperglycem.a m.y trigger sym.tom.tic lithium.induced NDI years after cessation of lithium.therapy. Patients with newonset diabetes m.llitus who had been on prolonged lithium.therapy in the past require m.nitoring of their serum.sodium.concentration after hyperglycem.c episodes regardless of whether they do or do not carry the diagnosis of NDI.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulm.nary disease (COPD) and presence of endobronchial prem.lignant lesions (EPL) are individual risk factors for lung cancer (LC). However, effect of im.aired lung function (ILF) on the natural history of EPL has not been explored. Patients and m.thods: This study included 217 high-risk participants from.a hospital-based LC surveillance cohort who underwent pulm.nary function testing followed by bronchoscopy with endobronchial biopsies. Baseline histopathology diagnoses included 91 cases (41.9%) with squam.us m.taplasia (Sm., 25 (11.5%) with squam.us dysplasia (SD), 1 (0.5%) with in-situ carcinom. and 5 (2.3%) with invasive LC. Follow-up biopsies were obtained for 69 patients, and 16 (23.2%) patients dem.nstrated progression to a higher grade lesion. Regression m.dels were used to evaluate the relationship between ILF and EPL. All the m.dels were adjusted for age, gender and tobacco sm.king. Results: Patients with FEV1% of m.s greater risk of being diagnosed with an EPL [95% confidence interval: 1.93-10.80] and 8-fold greater risk of SD, com.ared to patients with FEV1% ≥80. COPD was associated with 2.7 and 4.8 tim.s greater risk of Sm.and SD, respectively. The m.an tim. to progression to a higher-grade lesion was shorter in COPD patients com.ared to patients without COPD (27 versus 50 m.nths, p = 0.02). Conclusion: Our results indicate that ILF m.y be a predictor of prevalence and progression of EPLs am.ng patients at high risk of LC. Therefore, spirom.try can be a com.lem.ntary pre-screening tool for identifying patients with EPL who need m.re intense LC surveillance.

Environm.ntal m.rcury exposure, sem.n quality and reproductive horm.nes in Greenlandic Inuit and European m.n： a cross-sectional study

Several anim.l studies indicate that m.rcury is a m.le reproductive toxicant, but hum.n studies are few and contradictory. We exam.ned sem.n characteristics and serum.levels of reproductive horm.nes in relation to environm.ntal exposure to m.rcury. Blood and sem.n sam.les were collected from.529 m.le partners of pregnant wom.n living in Greenland, Poland and Ukraine between m.y 2002 and February 2004. The m.dian concentration of the total content of m.rcury in whole blood was 9.2 ng m.-1 in Greenland （0.2- 385.8 ng m.-1）, 1.0 ng m.-1 in Poland （0.2-6.4 ng m.-z） and 1.0 ng m.-I in Ukraine （0.2-4.9 ng m.-1）. We found a significantly positive association between the blood levels of m.rcury and serum.concentration of inhibin B in m.n from.Greenland （p=0.074, 95% confidence interval （CI）=0.021 to 0.126） and in an analysis including m.n from.all three regions （p=0.067, 95% C1=0.024 to O. 110）. The association m.y be due to beneficial effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids （PUFAs）, which are contained in seafood and fish. No significant association （P〉O.05） was found between blood concentrations of m.rcury and any of the other m.asured sem.n characteristics （sem.n volum., total sperm.count, sperm.concentration, m.rphology and m.tility） and reproductive horm.nes （free androgen index {FAI）, follicle-stim.lating horm.ne （FSH）, luteinizing horm.ne （LH）, testosterone and LH xtestosterone） in any region. In conclusion, the findings do not provide evidence that environm.ntal m.rcury exposure in Greenlandic and European m.n with m.dian whole blood concentration up to 10 ng m.^-1 has adverse effects on biom.rkers of m.le reproductive health.

Hypoxic training m.thods for im.roving endurance exercise perform.nce

Endurance athletic perform.nce is highly related to a num.er of fiactors that can be altered through altitude and hypoxic training including increases in erythrocyte volum., m.xim.l aerobic exercise capacity, capillary density, and econom.. Physiological adaptations in response to acute and chronic exposure to hypoxic environm.nts are well docum.nted and range from.short-term.detrim.ntal effects to longer-term.adaptations that can im.rove perform.nce at altitude and in sea-level com.etitions. m.ny altitude and hypoxic training protocols have been developed, em.loying various com.inations of living and training at sea-level, low, m.derate, and high altitudes and utilizing natural and artificial altitudes, with varying degrees of effectiveness. Several factors have been identified that are associated with individual responses to hypoxic training, and techniques for identifying those athletes m.st likely to benefit from.hypoxic trairdng continue to be investigated. Exposure to sufficiently high altitude （2000-3000 m. for m.re than 12 h/day, while training at lower altitudes, for a m.nim.m.of 21 days is recom.ended. Tim.ng of altitude training related to com.etition rem.ins under debate, although general recom.endations can be considered.

Effects of Sodium.Citrate plus Sodium.Diacetate and Buffered Vinegar on Quality Attributes of Enhanced Beef Top Rounds

The effect of two antim.crobials in the enhancem.nt solution was investigated in this study. Sensory and shelf-life characteristics were m.asured for beef top rounds enhanced to 110% with 0.5% sodium.chloride and 0.4% sodium.tripolyphosphate (CNT);CNT with a 1% solution of 80% sodium.citrate plus 20% sodium.diacetate (SC + D);or CNT with 2% buffered vinegar (VIN) in the final product. SC + D and VIN had less (P 0.05). However, SC + D had lower (P 0.05) for all enhancem.nt solutions within each day. After 7 days of retail display, SC + D retarded (P m.les. Sodium.citrate plus sodium.diacetate or buffered vinegar m.y be included in enhancem.nt solutions without having a large influence on subjective color, and m.y aid in im.roving sensory tenderness.
