A procedure to assess the spatial variability in the importance of abiotic factors affecting distributions： the case of world freshwater fishes

Understanding the factors shaping species' distributions is a key longstanding topic in ecology with unresolved issues. The aims were to test whether the relative contribution of abiotic factors that set the geographical range of freshwater fish species may vary spatially and/or may depend on the geographical extent that is being considered. The relative contribution of factors, to discriminate between the conditions prevailing in the area where the species is present and those existing in the considered extent, was estimated with the instability index included in the R package SPEDInstabR. We used 3 different extent sizes: 1) each river basin where the species is present (local); 2) all river basins where the species is present (regional); and 3) the whole Earth (global). We used a data set of 16,543 freshwater fish species with a total of 845,764 geographical records, together with bioclimatic and topographic variables. Factors associated with temperature and altitude show the highest relative contribution to explain the distribution of freshwater fishes at the smaller considered extent. Altitude and a mix of factors associated with temperature and precipitation were more important when using the regional extent. Factors associated with precipitation show the highest contribution when using the global extent. There was also spatial variability in the importance of factors, both between species and within species and from region to region. Factors associated with precipitation show a clear latitudinal trend of decreasing in importance toward the equator.

Emerging technologies such as electric vehicles,solid-state transformers,and DC transformers are implemented using the closed-loop bi-directional dual-active-bridge(DAB)converter.In this context,it is necessary to have average models that provide an efficient way of tuning the proportional integral(PI)compensator parameters for large-and small-signal applications.We present a novel small-signal model(SSM)for DAB converter with a single closed-loop PI controller and the total elimination of reactive current(IQ=0).The method applies a modulation technique for IQ=0 and introduces a composite function in the controller while reducing the original nonlinear switching model,which allows to decrease the order of the transfer function and analyze the closed-loop operation.The proposed SSM is analyzed using different response time,load,and DC voltage changes.The simulation and experimental results demonstrate the ease of implementation and effectiveness of the proposed model with respect to other SSM techniques.

This paper addresses the modeling of fracture in quasi-brittle materials using a phase-field approach to the description of crack topol-ogy.Within the computational mechanics community,several studies have treated the issue of modeling fracture using phase fields.Most of these studies have used an approach that implies the lack of a damage threshold.We herein explore an alternative model that includes a damage threshold and study how it compares with the most popular approach.The formulation is systematically explained within a rigorous variational framework.Subsequently,we present the corresponding three-dimensional finite element discretization that leads to a straightforward numerical implementation.Benchmark simulations in two dimensions and three dimensions are then presented.The results show that while an elastic stage and a damage threshold are ensured by the present model,good agreement with the results reported in the literature can be obtained,where such features are generally absent.

Extract of Codiaeum luzonicum Merr. overcomes multidrug resistance in human colon cancer cells by modulating P-glycoprotein

Objective:To investigate anti-multidrug resistance(MDR)activity and safety of the bioactive fraction(CL11)from Codiaeum luzonicum crude leaf extract.Methods:Cytotoxic activity of CL11 against MDR and nonresistant colon cancer cells was assessed using MTT assay.Mode of cell death was investigated by annexin V-propidium iodide staining,TUNEL,and JC-1 assays.To examine mechanism of action,the effect on the expression and function of the MDR-implicated protein P-glycoprotein was tested using Western blotting and calcein assay,respectively.Results:CL11 had an EC50 of 0.18,1.03 and 38.52µg/mL against HCT-15,HCT-15/Dox and HCT116,respectively.Cytotoxicity was mediated by inhibition of P-glycoprotein function and expression.The mode of cell death involved mitochondrial membrane depolarization and was mostly non-apoptotic at EC50 concentrations against HCT-15 and HCT-15/Dox.Conclusions:Fraction CL11 of Codiaeum luzonicum induces nonapoptotic cell death in MDR cancer cells by overcoming MDR through inhibition of P-glycoprotein expression and function.

目的:探讨东帝汶传统医学的发展概况。方法:对东帝汶主要转诊医院圭多瓦拉达雷斯国家医院的50名外科患者、50名内科患者、50名医务工作人员和50名医院访客进行结构化访谈问卷调查。结果:60%的受访者表示接受过传统医学治疗;32%的受访者在过去一年内服用过传统药物,其中外科病人使用频率最高,医务工作人员使用最少。传统医学不受地域差异、教育水平等因素影响,使用频率相差无异。东帝汶传统医学有价格低廉、无毒副作用、亲友推荐等优势。约50%的患者在治疗时使用传统药物,许多患者治疗慢性病也联合传统医学疗法。结论:东帝汶传统医学运用非常普遍,并且传统医学与现代医学具有同等重要的地位和作用。

Plants have developed multiple strategies to respond to salt stress.In order to identify new traits related to salt tolerance,with potential breeding application,the research focus has recently been shifted to include root system architecture(RSA)and root plasticity.Using a simple but effective root phenotyping system containing soil(rhizotrons),RSA of several tomato cultivars and their response to salinity was investigated.We observed a high level of root plasticity of tomato seedlings under salt stress.The general root architecture was substantially modified in response to salt,especially with respect to position of the lateral roots in the soil.At the soil surface,where salt accumulates,lateral root emergence was most strongly inhibited.Within the set of tomato cultivars,H1015 was the most tolerant to salinity in both developmental stages studied.A significant correlation between several root traits and aboveground growth parameters was observed,highlighting a possible role for regulation of both ion content and root architecture in salt stress resilience.

Cytotoxic activity of crude extracts and fractions from Premna odorata(Blanco),Artocarpus camansi(Blanco) and Gliricidia sepium(Jacq.) against selected human cancer cell lines

Objective:To evaluate the cytotoxic activities of Premna odorata(P.odorata)leaves and bark,Artocarpus camansi(A.camansi)and Gliricidia sepium against selected human cancer cell lines by using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide(MTT)assay.Methods:The crude extracts of P.odorata,A.camansi and Gliricidia sepium were subjected to liquid–liquid partitioning by using hexane and ethyl acetate to separate compounds based on their polarity.The fractions were tested for their cytotoxic activity against human colon cancer cell line(HCT116),breast cancer cell line(MCF-7),lung adenocarcinoma cell line(A549)and Chinese hamster ovary cell line(AA8)by using MTT assay.Results:Based on the standard values of toxicity set by the study of Suffness and Pezzuto,P.odorata leaves and P.odorata bark hexane fractions and A.camansi leaves were all considered highly cytotoxic against the selected human cancer cell lines.P.odorata bark hexane extract exhibited the highest selectivity index for HCT116,MCF-7 and A549 cancer cell lines.Conclusions:The results obtained indicated that P.odorata leaves and bark and A.camansi leaves have excellent cytotoxic activity and warrant further studies to isolate novel compounds for chemotherapeutic use.

Plant extracts as natural photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy:in vitro activity against human mammary adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cells

Objective: To examine three plant extracts [Lumnitzera racemosa(Combretaceae)(L.racemosa), Albizia procera(Fabaceae)(A.procera) and Cananga odorata(Annonaceae)] for their potential as source of photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy.Methods: Human mammary adenocarcinoma(MCF-7) cells were treated with the plant extracts, which were irradiated with 5.53 m W and 0.553 mW broadband light.Cell viability was assessed using MTT assay and induction of apoptosis was determined using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-dUTP nick end labeling assay.Results: The crude ethanolic extracts, independently, were nontoxic against cancer and non-cancer cells but when irradiated with 5.53 mW broadband light, L.racemosa and A.procera extracts were cytotoxic against MCF-7 with IC_(50) of 11.63 mg/mL and10.73 mg/mL, respectively.With 0.553 mW broadband light, the IC_(50) values were higher at 17.14 mg/mL and 19.59 mg/mL, respectively.Photoactivated L.racemosa and A.procera extracts were found to be more cytotoxic against MCF-7 than the non-cancer cell line, human dermal fibroblast-neonatal.Moreover, the cytotoxicity of the extracts was mediated by apoptosis.Conclusions: Two of the plant extracts used, L.racemosa and A.procera were toxic and induced apoptosis to mammary cell adenocarcinoma, MCF-7 when photoactivated.These extracts were also more toxic to human cancer than non-cancer cell lines.
