Advances in magnesium-containing bioceramics for bone repair

Reconstruction of bone defects or fractures caused by ageing, trauma and tumour resection is still a great challenge in clinical treatment. Although autologous bone graft is considered as gold standard, the source of natural bone is limited. In recent years, regenerative therapy based on bioactive materials has been proposed for bone reconstruction. Specially, numerous studies have indicated that bioactive ceramics including silicate and phosphate bioceramics exhibit excellent osteoinductivity and osteoconductivity, further promote bone regeneration. In addition, magnesium (Mg) element, as an indispensable mineral element, plays a vital role in promoting bone mineralisation and formation. In this review, different types of Mg-containing bioceramics including Mg-containing calcium phosphate-based bioceramics (such as Mg-hydroxyapatite, Mg-biphasic calcium phosphate), Mg-containing calcium silicate-based bioceramics (such as Mg2SiO4, Ca2MgSi2O7and Mg-doped bioglass), Mg-based biocements, Mg-containing metal/polymer-bioceramic composites were systematacially summarised. Additionally, the fabrication technologies and their materiobiological effects were deeply discussed, Clinical applications and perspectives of magnesium-containing bioceramics for bone repair are highlighted. Overall, Mg-containing bioceramics are regarded as regenerative therapy with their optimised performance. Furthermore, more in-depth two-way researches on their performance and structure are essential to satisfy their clinical needs. © 2024, Chinese Medical Multimedia Press Co Ltd. All rights reserved.

Complete surgical resection(R0)of liver tumors,primary or metastatic,remains the main obj.ctive in management of primary and metastatic liver tumors[1].Tumors invading to the proximity of the hepatic venous outflow pose a peculiar challenge to achieve R0 resections,because this location may render a tumor *** median survival of patients with liver tumor without surgery is less than 12 months[2].Even with surgery,post-hepatectomy liver failure and subsequently increased mortality are the main problems associated with complex resection[3].Moreover,when the vein is affected,vein resection and subsequent reconstruction are *** resection is a standard practice in liver resection and transplantation[4],for example,hepatic vein reconstruction during a living-donor liver transplant,porto-mesenteric axis reconstruction during resection of advanced pancreatic cancer and caval reconstruction during resection of retroperitoneal ***,novel techniques like total hepatic vascular exclusion(HVE)[5],veno-venous bypass[6]and ex vivo hepatic resection[7,8]have facilitated curative resections of tumors close to one or more maj.r hepatic veins.

Electricity Generation from Heatwaves

We chose a definition of heatwaves (HWs) that has ~4-year recurrence frequency at world hot spots. We first examined the 1940-2022 HWs climatology and trends in lifespan, severity, spatial extent, and recurrence frequency. HWs are becoming more frequent and more severe for extratropical mid- and low-latitudes. To euphemize HWs, we here propose a novel clean energy-tapping concept that utilizes the available nano-technology, micro-meteorology knowledge of temperature distribution within/without buildings, and radiative properties of earth atmosphere. The key points for a practical electricity generation scheme from HWs are defogging, insulation, and minimizing the absorption of infrared downward radiation at the cold legs of the thermoelectric generators. One sample realization is presented which, through relay with existing photovoltaic devices, provides all-day electricity supply sufficient for providing air conditioning requirement for a residence (~2000-watt throughput). The provision of power to air conditioning systems, usually imposes a significant stress on traditional city power grids during heatwaves.

Why Don’t We Adequately Identify and Manage Adverse Drug Reactions despite Having the Needed Information?

Importance/Obj.ctive: Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) are unavoidable, but recognizing and addressing ADRs early can improve wellness and prevent permanent inj.ry. We suggest that available medical information and digital/electronic methods could be used to manage this maj.r healthcare problem for individual patients in real time. Methods: We searched the available digital applications and three literature databases using the medical subj.ct heading terms, adverse drug reaction reporting systems or management, filtered by clinical trial or systemic reviews, to detect publications with data about ADR identification and management approaches. We reviewed the reports that had abstract or summary data or proposed or implemented methods or systems with potential to identify or manage ADRs in clinical settings. Results: The vast maj.rity of the 481 reports used retrospectively collected data for groups of patients or were limited to surveying one population group or class of medication. The reports showed potential and definite associations of ADRs for specific drugs and problems, mostly, but not exclusively, for patients in hospitals and nursing homes. No reports described complete methods to collect comprehensive data on ADRs for individual patients in a healthcare system. The digital applications have ADR information, but all are too cumbersome or incomplete for use in active clinical settings. Several studies suggested that providing information about potential ADRs to clinicians can reduce these problems. Conclusion and Relevance: Although investigators and government agencies agree with the need, there is no comprehensive ADR management program in current use. Informing the patient’s healthcare practitioners of potential ADRs at the point of service has the potential for reduction of these complications, which should improve healthcare and reduce unneeded costs.

A Simulation of the Dependence of Tidal Interaction on Galaxy Type in Compact Groups

We have investigated the role that different galaxy types have in galaxy-galaxy interactions in compact groups. N-body simulations of 6 galaxies consisting of a differing mixture of galaxy types were run to compare the relative importance of galaxy population demographic on evolution. Three different groups with differing galaxy content were tested: all spiral, a single elliptical and 50% elliptical. Tidal interaction strength and duration were recorded to assess the importance of an interaction. A group with an equal number of spiral and elliptical galaxies has some of the longest and strongest interactions with elliptical-elliptical interactions being most significant. These elliptical-elliptical interactions are not dominated by a single large event but consist of multiple interactions. Elliptical galaxies tidally interacting with spiral galaxies, have the next strongest interaction events. For the case when a group only has a single elliptical, the largest magnitude tidal interaction is an elliptical on a spiral. Spirals interact with each other through many small interactions. For a spiral only group, the interactions are the weakest compared to the other group types. These spiral interactions are not dominated by any singular event that might be expected to lead to a merger but are more of an ongoing harassment. These results suggest that within a compact group, early type galaxies will not form via merger out of an assemblage of spiral galaxies but rather that compact groups, in effect form around an early type galaxy.

“Yin-Yang philosophy” for the design of anticancer drug delivery nanoparticles

Understanding the in vivo transport process provides guidelines for designing ideal nanoparticles (NPs) with higher efficacy and fewer off-target effects. Many factors, such as particle size, morphology, surface potential, structural stability, and etc., may influence the delivering process of NPs due to the existence of various physiological barriers within the body. Herein, we summarise the distinct influences of NP physicochemical properties on the four consecutive in vivo transport steps: (1) navigating with bloodstream within blood vessels, (2) transport across vasculature walls into tumour tissues, (3) intratumoural transport through the interstitial space, and (4) cellular uptake & intracellular delivery by cancerous cells. We found that the philosophy behind the current consensus for NP design has certain similarities to the “Yin-Yang” theory in traditional Chinese culture. Almost all physicochemical properties, regardless of big or small sizes, long or short length, positive or negative zeta potentials, are double-edged swords. The balance of potential benefits and side effects, drug selectivity and accessibility should be fully considered when optimising particle design, similar to the “Yin-Yang harmony”. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the advancements in NPs research, focusing on their distinct features in tumour targeting, drug delivery, and cell uptake. Additionally, it deliberates on future developmental trends and potential obstacles, thereby aiming to uncover the ways these characteristics influence the NPs’ biological activity and provide theoretical guidance for the targeted delivery of NPs. © 2024, Chinese Medical Multimedia Press Co Ltd. Leptin Modulates the Differentiation of Keratinocytes via Autophagy in Psoriasis Patients with Metabolic Syndrome

Obj.ctive: Psoriasis is associated with a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS), and patients with concomitant psoriasis and MS are more severely affected and less responsive to treatment. However, the molecular mechanisms behind these effects are unknown. Recent studies have shown that leptin may serve as a molecular link between psoriasis and MS, suggesting that high leptin concentrations may exacerbate psoriasis. However, the molecular mechanism of this effect is still unclear. We aimed to investigate the effect of leptin on autophagy in patients with psoriasis. Methods: From j.nuary 2021 to j.ne 2022 in PLA General Hospital, we enrolled 51 patients with psoriasis, including 21 patients with MS and 30 without MS, and 30 healthy controls who had undergone nevus surgery. We measured the epidermal leptin, P62, and LC3B concentrations of patients by immunohistochemistry, and measured the serum leptin concentration by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We then performed correlation analyses to compare these proteins' concentrations between patients with concomitant psoriasis and MS, patients with psoriasis alone, and healthy control groups. Additionally, we performed western blotting after in vitro culture of HaCaT cells with different concentrations of leptin and measured the expression levels of the autophagy markers Beclin1, LC3B, and P62; the differentiation markers K10, K16, and K17; and PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway-related proteins of HaCat cells. Next, we transfected ATG5 into HaCaT cells to revert autophagy and used the specific PI3K inhibitor LY294002 to block PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling. The expression levels of K10, K16, and K17 of HaCat cells were again measured. One-way analysis of variance was used for the comparison of means of multiple samples, and LSD-t post hoc test was used for comparison between the 2 groups. Generalized Hopf Bifurcation in a Delay Model of Neutrophil Cells Model

The DDE-Biftool software is applied to solve the dynamical stability and bifurcation problem of the neutrophil cells model. Based on Hopf point finding with the stability property of the equilibrium solution loss, the continuation of the bifurcating periodical solution starting from Hopf point is exploited. The generalized Hopf point is tracked by seeking for the critical value of free parameter of the switching phenomena of the open loop, which describes the lineup of bifurcating periodical solutions from Hopf point. The normal form near the generalized Hopf point is computed by Lyapunov-Schimdt reduction scheme combined with the center manifold analytical technique. The near dynamics is classified by geometrically different topological phase portraits.

Effects of different ratios of soluble to insoluble dietary fiber on growth performance and intestinal health of piglets

This study investigated the impact of different ratios of soluble to insoluble dietary fiber (SDF:IDF) formulations by sugar beet pulp (SBP) supplementation on piglet growth performance, nutrient digestibility, immune function, intestinal morphology, intestinal microbiota and intestinal health. A total of 60 crossbred piglets (Duroc x [Landrace x Yorkshire]) at 40 d old with body weight of 10.0 +/- 0.3 kg were randomly assigned to 5 treatments with 6 replicates per treatment and 2 piglets per replicate in a 21d trial. The dietary treatments included a corn-soybean meal diet (0% SBP supplementation; CON), and diets supplemented with 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% SBP, representing different SDF:IDF ratios at 10.16%, 13.53%, 16.79%, 19.86%, and 24.81%, respectively. The results indicated that the 8% SBP treatment had a negative effect on feed-to-gain ratio (linear, P = 0.009) compared with the CON treatment (P = 0.021). The apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of crude protein was lower in treatments supplemented with SBP (P = 0.002) and showed a linear decrease (P = 0.001), while the ATTD of IDF showed a linear increase (P = 0.037) in four SBP treatments compared to the CON treatment. The 4% SBP treatment increased serum concentrations of triglyceride (quadratic, P = 0.019) and K (linear, P < 0.0037), and decreased alanine transaminase concentration (quadratic, P = 0.015) compared with the CON treatment. The concentrations of Cit, Cys, Ile, Leu, Orn, Arg, taurine, urea, 1-methylhistidine, a-aminoadipic acid, aaminobutyric acid and cystathionine in the 4% SBP treatment were highest among all treatments (P < 0.05). The serum concentrations of interleukin-6, interleukin-8, interleukin-10, transforming growth factor-b, and tumor necrosis factor-a in the 6% SBP treatment were higher than those in the CON treatment (P < 0.05), which also increased mucin-2 and G protein-coupled receptor 41 mRNA expression (P < 0.05) in colonic mucosa compared with the CON treatment and improved th

The Oral Health Status of Person with Special Needs in Kumasi

Background: The most prevalent non-communicable disease worldwide is oral health-related disease, with dental caries and periodontal conditions being common. Oral health status significantly impacts overall health and quality of life. Barriers to dental care affect children with special needs. This study evaluates the oral health status and treatment requirements of people with special needs. Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study in Kumasi, Ghana examined oral health status among people, 121 children with special needs over two months, in j.ne-j.ly 2022. Dental caries, periodontal changes, malocclusion, and trauma were assessed. The data was analyzed using SPSS 20.0. Results: The oral health status among people with special needs in this study was generally moderate, with a range from very good to very poor. The prevalence of dental caries was 37%, with a mean DMFT score of 2.82. Periodontal health showed unsatisfactory indicators such as mobile teeth, poor gingival health, high plaque scores, and the presence of halitosis. Conclusion: This descriptive study aimed to provide baseline data on the oral health status of special needs students in Kumasi, addressing the lack of knowledge in this area. It highlighted the importance of dental care in maintaining good oral health and overall well-being in individuals with special needs. Coordinated efforts by dental professionals are needed to provide dental health education and preventive interventions for these children.
