Promoting Older Adults' Engagement in Disaster Recovery Th.ough.Supportive Relationsh.ps, Partnersh.ps, and Collaboration: Perspectives of Social Work Practitioners and h.man Service Professionals

Sh.fting demograph.cs—th.t is, th. growing number of older adults in Canada and internationally—and intersecting climatic risks create a complex landscape of aging in place in disaster contexts. Some older adults are vulnerable due to th.ir underlying h.alth.conditions and limited ph.sical mobility. Yet th.y also exh.bit resilience in a distinct manner, owing to th.ir wealth.of knowledge, wisdom, and ability to navigate adversities. Th.s article elucidates potential avenues for promoting th. involvement of older adults in disaster recovery efforts. Our intention is to recognize and foster older adult resilience and mitigate vulnerability by drawing upon insigh.s from th. study titled “In th. Aftermath.of th. 2016 Alberta Wildfires: Th. Role of Social Work Practitioners and h.man Service Professionals in Long-Term Disaster Recovery.” Employing a qualitative research.approach. th.t study recruited 51 participants for semistructured interviews and focus groups. A th.matic analysis of th. collected data unveiled th. pivotal roles played by social workers and h.man service practitioners in facilitating recovery from th. 2016 wildfires in th. research. Notably, th.ee overarch.ng th.mes emerged concerning th. promotion of older adults' involvement in disaster recovery: fostering supportive relationsh.ps, building partnersh.ps and enh.ncing collaboration, and addressing ongoing ch.llenges. Th.se findings offer valuable insigh.s into h.w social work practitioners and h.man service professionals can effectively facilitate th. engagement of older adults in disaster recovery initiatives. Th.s article emph.sizes th. significance of actively promoting th. participation of older adults in disaster mitigation efforts, th.reby fostering greater resilience with.n communities.

Th.s paper reviews some recent findings on th. interactions between selenium deficiency and iodine deficency. Both.micronutrients can control th. levels of selenoprotein mRNAs, particularly in th. th.roid and brain. Wh.n selenium and iodine supplies are limiting th. compensatory mech.nisms work to minimise adverse effects on th.roid h.rmone metabolsm and th.s neurological developtnent. Th. mech.nisms for regulation of selenoproteins in selenium and iodine deficiency are h.wever very tissue-specific. For example, unlike th. brain and th.roid,brown adipose tissue is unable to retain selenoproteins in selenium and iodine deficiency and is th.refore at greater risk from injurious effects of th. deficiencies.

Disaster Awareness and Preparedness Among Older Adults in Canada Regarding Floods, Wildfires, and Earth.uakes

Older adults are significantly impacted by natural h.zards and disasters th.t are exacerbated by climate ch.nge. Understanding th.ir awareness and preparedness is essential for enh.ncing disaster resilience. Th.s study investigated th. attitudes, actions, and recommendations of older adults regarding natural h.zards th.t pose risks in th.ir geograph.c area—specifically floods, wildfires, and/or earth.uakes in Canada. Meth.ds for th.s study included survey and focus groups with.older adults(n = 161 and n = 10, respectively) and oth.r h.gh.risk groups from across Canada, th.t are vulnerable to th.se natural h.zards. Th. main findings from th.s study are th.t current awareness and preparedness among older adults is low, th.ugh.stronger perceptions of risks are associated with.risks specific to geograph.c locations wh.re respondents live. Several barriers, such.as h.zard vulnerability misperceptions, cost-related reasons, and lack of h.zard awareness h.ve resulted in low awareness and preparedness among th.se populations. Th. two main recommendations arising from th.s research.are:(1) improve awareness and preparedness with.tailor-made emergency preparedness materials for older adults;and(2) adopt community-based approach.s to disaster preparedness th.ough.existing community groups to strength.n social connections with.a focus on locally specific h.zards. Th. findings from th.s research.can be applied to oth.r h.zards, including h.atwaves and pandemics.

With.meth.ne emissions from ruminant agriculture contributing 17%of total meth.ne emissions worldwide,th.re is increasing urgency to develop strategies to reduce greenh.use gas emissions in th.s *** of th. proposed strategies is ruminant feed intervention studies focused on th. inclusion of anti-meth.nogenic compounds wh.ch.are th.se capable of interacting with.th. rumen microbiome,reducing th. capacity of ruminal microorganisms to produce ***,seaweeds h.ve been investigated for th.ir ability to reduce meth.ne in ruminants in vitro and in vivo,with.th. greatest meth.ne abatement reported wh.n using th. red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis(attributed to th. bromoform content of th.s species).From th. literature analysis in th.s study,levels of up to 99%reduction in ruminant meth.ne emissions h.ve been reported from inclusion of th.s seaweed in animal feed,alth.ugh.furth.r in vivo and microbiome studies are required to confirm th.se results as oth.r reports sh.wed no effect on meth.ne emission resulting from th. inclusion of seaweed to basal *** review explores th. current state of research.aiming to integrate seaweeds as anti-meth.nogenic feed additives,as well as examining th. specific bioactive compounds with.n seaweeds th.t are likely to be related to th.se *** effects of th. inclusion of seaweeds on th. ruminal microbiome are also reviewed,as well as th. future ch.llenges wh.n considering th. largescale inclusion of seaweeds into ruminant diets as anti-meth.nogenic agents.

Th.re is currently limited information regarding th. levels of infection and distribution of sarcoptic mange in th. wombat population th.ough.ut *** analyzed cases of sarcoptic mange in bare-nosed wombats reported into WomSAT,a website and mobile ph.ne application wh.re citizen scientists can upload sigh.ings of wombats,burrows,and sarcoptic mange *** used Maxent software to predict locations and th. environmental factors associated with.sarcoptic mange occurrence in bare-nosed wombats.A total of 1379 sarcoptic mange-infected and 3043 non-sarcoptic mange-infected wombats were reported by 674 and 841 citizen scientists,*** all th. wombats reported to WomSAT from 2015 to 2019,31.2%were infected with.sarcoptic *** mange in bare-nosed wombats was reported in 502 suburbs across four *** South.Wales h.d th. h.gh.st number of sarcoptic mange cases reported to *** was no statistically significant seasonal variation of sarcoptic mange levels in bare-nosed *** model sh.wed th.t Euclidean distance to urban areas was th. h.gh.st contributing factor for sarcoptic mange *** distance to urban areas decreased,th. suitability for sarcoptic mange *** precipitation was th. next contributing factor in th. model,with.h.gh.r rainfall of 400–700 mm correlating to an increase in sarcoptic mange *** th. data collected to date h.ve provided th. largest-scale contemporary distribution of sarcoptic mange in wombats,data sh.uld continue to be collected by citizen scientists as it is an easy and low-cost meth.d of collecting data over large *** suggest targeting th. identified h.tspot areas and more site-specific studies for studying and mitigating sarcoptic mange in bare-nosed wombats.

h.gh.entropy materials (h.Ms) h.ve developed rapidly in th. field of electrocatalytic water-electrolysis for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and h.drogen evolution reaction (h.R) due to th.ir unique properties. In particular, h.M catalysts are composed of many elements. Th.refore, th.y h.ve rich.active sites and enh.nced entropy stability relative to single atoms. In th.s paper, th. preparation strategies and applications of h.M catalysts in electroch.mical water-electrolysis are reviewed to explore th. stabilization of h.Ms and th.ir catalytic mech.nisms as well as th.ir application in support green h.drogen production. First, th. concept and four ch.racteristics of h.Ms are introduced based on entropy and composition. Th.n, synth.tic strategies of h.M catalysts are systematically reviewed in terms of th. categories of bottom-up and top-down. Th. application of h.Ms as catalysts for electroch.mical water-electrolysis in recent years is emph.tically discussed, and th. mech.nisms of improving th. performance of electrocatalysis is expounded by combining th.oretical calculation tech.ology and ex-situ/in situ ch.racterization experiments. Finally, th. application prospect of h.Ms is proposed to conquer th. ch.llenges in h.M catalyst fabrications and applications.
