An initial note on quasi- stationary, cold-core Lanyu eddies southeast off Taiwan Island

Drifting buoys, satellite altimetry and satellite-derived sea surface thermal images are used to identify the existence of a large cold-core, cyclonic Kuroshio frontal eddy between Hengchun Peninsula and Lanyu, southeast off Taiwan Island around March 1.96. The cold eddy accompanies an offshore meander of the Kuroshio near Lanyu, about 70 km and 1.0 km in horizontal zonal and meridional scales, respectively. The cold eddy is different from normal Kuroshio frontal eddies for its persisting of about 2 months near Lanyu. Supporting evidence suggests that the Kuroshio intruded into the South china Sea (SCS, hereafter) forming a loop-like structure during the persisting period of the cold eddy and that similar eddies occur occasionally in the same location. Compared with the corresponding studies in the Gulf of Mexico, it is suggested that Lanyu cold eddies are SCS analogues of Tortugas eddies found in the southern Straits of Florida. Overshooting of the meandering Kuroshio when it leaves the SCS and effects from conservation of potential vorticity are the possible mechanism of eddy genesis.

Coupling and propagating of mesoscale sea level variability between the western Pacific and the South china Sea

The coupling and propagating features of mesoscale sea level variability between the western Pacific (WP) and the South china Sea (SCS) were studied based on time series analyses of satellite altimeter measured, along-track sea surface height anomalies (SSHA) along 21.N and the slope of the northern SCS. The analyses show that mesoscale sea level fluctuations in the WP have rather limited coherent effects on the SCS, and no statistically significant propagation of mesoscale variability through the Luzon Strait was observed except in the 45-day band. Evidence suggests that the 45-day fluctuation is very much likely a character of the Kuroshio originating from its low-latitude beginning. It is also sug- gested that the westward propagating Rossby waves will deform when they encounter the dynamical barrier of the Kuroshio. The Kuroshio will then acts on the SCS in its own way. The SCS is a relatively isolated system in the sense of coupling and propagating of oceanic mesoscale waves.

A low-level β counting-or spectrum apparatus used for the detection of the β radiation of thorium-234 and α spectrum of thorium- 228 simultaneously and an easy operating procedure for the enrichment, radiochemical separating, sampling and measurement of thorium-234 and uranium-238 in the ocean are developed based on the requirements of analyzing export productivity in the eupho- ric zone via thorium-234 - uranium-238 radioactivity disequilibrium. The detecting efficiency both of 1. and α radiation is higher than 20%. The background of βradiation is less than 0. 5 min ^-1., and the energy resolution of ct detector is better than 1.. Total recycle ratio of thorium-234 is about 75%. Using the above apparatus and procedure, the radioactivities of dissolved thorium-234 and uranium-238, particle thorium-234 and uranium-238 in seawater of the South china Sea, the Southern Ocean and the Arctic Ocean were analyzed.

A formaldehyde-degrading fungus was isolated from deep sea sediment of East Pacific by enrichment culture technique and was identified as Penicillium chrysogenum DY-F2 based on microscopic spore morphology and 1. S r RNA gene sequence analysis. The fungus showed high formaldehyde resistance and was able to grow in the presence of formaldehyde up to 3000 mg l-1. The optimal temperature and p H for the growth of fungus in the presence of 1.00 mg l-1.of formaacknowlegementldehyde was 25 °C and 6.0, respectively. The fungus was able to degrade formaldehyde as the sole source of carbon and energy with the formation of formic acid as the intermediate. Degradation of formaldehyde by the fungus conformed to a first-order kinetic model. This study showed that the deep sea sediment fungi are the potential microbial resources for bioremediation of formaldehyde pollution in marine environment.
