Untangling the influence of soil moisture on root pullout property of alfafa plant

Root pullout property of plants was of key importance to the soil reinforcement and the improvement of slope stability. To investigate the influence of soil moisture on root pullout resistance and failure modes in soil reinforcement process, we conducted pullout tests on alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) roots at five levels(40, 30, 20, 10 and 6 kPa) of soil matric suction, corresponding to respectively 7.84%, 9.66%, 13.02%, 19.35% and 27.06% gravimetric soil moisture contents. Results showed that the maximal root pullout force of M. sativa decreased in a power function with increasing soil moisture content from 7.84% to 27.06%. Root slippage rate increased and breakage rate decreased with increasing soil moisture content. At 9.66% soil moisture content, root slippage rate and breakage rate was 56.41% and 43.58%, respectively. The threshold value of soil moisture content was about 9.00% for alfalfa roots in the loess soil. The maximal pullout force of M. sativa increased with root diameter in a power function. The threshold value of root diameter was 1.15 mm, because root slipping force was greater than root breaking force when diameter >1.15 mm, while diameter ≤1.15 mm, root slipping force tended to be less than root breaking force. No significant difference in pullout forces was observed between slipping roots and breaking roots when they had similar diameters. More easily obtained root tensile force(strength) is suggested to be used in root reinforcement models under the condition that the effect of root diameter is excluded as the pullout force of breaking roots measured in pullout tests is similar to the root tensile force obtained by tensile tests.

The 2009 annual special issue of Time Magazine on March 23rd summarized the ＇10 Ideas Changing the World Right Now＇, in which ＇Biobank＇ had been listed as the eighth. Biobank or biorepository has been developed since last century. Tissue banks represented the early type of clinical biobanks and mainly concentrated on clinical usage such as transplantation at the beginning. The first tissue bank in the United States started in 1949 is the United States Navy Tissue Bank. In 1976, the foundation of American Association of Tissue Banks （AATB） claimed the official show of biobanks on social stage （***）. From the end of 20th Century to the beginning of 21st Century, diverse biobanks of clinical samples, seed banks, gene banks, germplasm banks of non-human species and other various types have sprung up.

Betulin, oleanolic acid, and betulinic acid are naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoids that have significant medicinal value. Considerable amounts of these triterpenoids are available in the outer bark of white birch. In this study, we used ultrasound-assisted extraction （UAE） to extract triterpenoids from birch bark rapidly and with high efficiency. Using high performance liquid chro- matography （HPLC）, three types of triterpenoids were separated and detected. We examined the differences among triterpenoids extracted from diploid versus tetra- ploid white birch. Then, we used factor analysis to screen out tetraploid white birches with comprehensively excel- lent performance. The results indicate that the optimum conditions for extraction include the use of ethanol as an extraction solvent, a solid-to-liquid ratio of 0.1 g/10 ml, ultrasonic power set at 100 W, a temperature of 60 ℃ and an extraction time of 15 min. A reversed-phase C18 col- umn （4.6 mm × 250 mm × 5 μm） with a column tem- perature of 30 ℃ and the mobile phase composed of A （acetonitrile） and B （0.1% aqueous phosphoric acid, v/v） at a flow rate of 0.5 ml/min were used, and the detection wavelength was 195 nm. No significant difference wasobserved between diploid and tetraploid white birch in terms of the content of three types of triterpenoids （at a confidence level of 0.05）. As triterpenoid content, height, and DBH （diameter at breast height） are strongly interre- lated, we used factor analysis to evaluate all individuals, and we screened out six plus trees with excellent com- prehensive characters.

Estimating genetic parameters of parental lines through progeny testing and choosing good hybrid parents are important for genetically improving seed orchard *** this study, 24 tetraploid progeny seedlings were used as experimental materials, which came from test cross design：six tetraploid Betula platyphylla lines（Q33, Q13, Q103,Q19, Q83 and Q14） as female parents and four individual B. platyphylla diploid lines（F3, F4, F9 and F11） as male parents were crossed. Variance analysis of height, diameter, height-to-diameter ratio, and internodal distance showed that the differences between hybrid combinations reached highly significant levels. Using multi-objective decisionmaking, we performed a comprehensive assessment of the various hybrid combinations. Using a selection rate of 20 % of the standard, five hybrids were selected;their genetic gains in average height, diameter, height-todiameter ratio, and internodal distance were 20.95, 6.07,13.07 and 8.96 %, respectively. We also analyzed the combining ability and genetic parameter effect values of parents and hybrid combinations. The combined analysis revealed that Q13, Q103, Q33 and Q83 were superior females; F3, F4, and F9 were superior males; and F3 × Q13, F4 × Q83 and F9 × Q33 were superior hybrid combinations. The heights and diameters of these progenies were 22.49 and 11.48 % greater than average,respectively.

In modern manufacturing pattern, there are many uncertain factors in the modern manufacturing process, such as changes of product attribute, changes of manufacturing resources＇ state, and so on, which cause production logistics bottleneck frequently shift, and make decisions of production planning and control based on formed bottleneck deviated from practical production process. Considering these factors, present researches mainly apply afterwards control to optimize production process to passively adapt to bottleneck changes If the direction of bottleneck shifting can be accurately forecasted, the transition from afterwards control of chasing bottleneck to beforehand control can be realized. Therefore, aiming at the phenomenon of production logistics bottleneck shifting under uncertain manufacturing circumstances, this paper starts off with dynamic property of capability and requirement and then builds the concepts of bottleneck degree and bottleneck index to describe dynamic bottleneck characteristic of production unit; taken production capability, production load and quality assurance capability into consideration, mathematical model of bottleneck index is established to measure bottleneck degree accurately, consequently, quantitative research on mechanism of production logistics shifting is achieved. Based on bottleneck index, the prediction model of production logistics bottleneck is founded to predict dynamic change of bottleneck accurately. Finally, an example of forecasting and monitoring the production logistics bottleneck in one manufacturing shop is given to testify the validation and practicability of the prediction method.
