The phosphorus cycle in the Sanggou Bay

The phosphorus cycle is studied during 2013–2014 in the Sanggou Bay（SGB）, which is a typical aquaculture area in northern China. The forms of measured phosphorus include dissolved inorganic phosphorus（DIP）, dissolved organic phosphorus（DOP）, particulate inorganic phosphorus（PIP）, and particulate organic phosphorus（POP）.DIP and PIP are the major forms of total dissolved phosphorus（TDP） and total particulate phosphorus（TPP）,representing 51%–75% and 53%–80%, respectively. The concentrations and distributions of phosphorus forms vary among seasons relative to aquaculture cycles, fluvial input, and hydrodynamic conditions. In autumn the concentration of DIP is significantly higher than in other seasons（P〈0.01）, and higher concentrations are found in the west of the bay. In winter and spring the phosphorus concentrations are higher in the east of the bay than in the west. In summer, the distributions of phosphorus forms are uniform. A preliminary phosphorus budget is developed, and shows that SGB is a net sink of phosphorus. A total of 1.80×10^7 mol/a phosphorus is transported into the bay. The Yellow Sea is the major source of net input of phosphorus（61%）, followed by submarine groundwater discharge（SGD）（27%）, river input（11%）, and atmospheric deposition（1%）. The main phosphorus sink is the harvest of seaweeds（Saccharina japonica and Gracilaria lemaneiformis）, bivalves（Chlamys farreri）,and oysters（Crassostrea gigas）, accounting for a total of 1.12×10^7 mol/a. Burial of phosphorus in sediment is another important sink, accounting for 7.00×10^6 mol/a. Biodeposition by bivalves is the major source of phosphorus in sediment, accounting for 54% of the total.

Photosynthetic and metabolic responses of eelgrass Zostera marina L. to short-term high-temperature exposure

In recent years, extreme heat events have occurred worldwide and the ocean temperature has been rising, causing stress on the photosynthesis and growth of seagrass. Metabolomics enables detection of metabolic changes under environmental stress. In this study, the photosynthetic physiology and metabolic changes of the eelgrass Zostera marina L. in response to 48 h exposure to 32°C were investigated. The results showed that high temperature induced signi?cant inhibition of photosynthetic effciency(Δ F/F′ m)(23.9%lower than the control), enhanced respiration(58.3% higher), and decreased carbohydrate decomposition products and tricarboxylic acid(TCA) cycle intermediate products, indicating that the energy supply of the eelgrass may be insuffcient at high temperature. In addition, high temperature decreased stearic acid and linoleic acid in eelgrass, suggesting the composition of the membrane system of eelgrass may change at high temperature and implying that high temperature may cause the membrane system to be unstable.

Response of Yesso scallop Patinopecten yessoensis to acute temperature challenge: physiological and biochemical parameters

Water temperature is generally considered to be a major factor af fecting the physiological and biochemical activities of marine bivalves. Here, the physiological and biochemical responses of Yesso scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis, to acute water temperature changes in summer were studied. Scallops were transferred directly to a lower temperature( T dec treatment)(from 23°C to 15°C) or to a higher temperature( Ti nc treatment)(from 15°C to 23°C) for 72 h, respectively. Results showed that the oxygen consumption and ammonia-N excretion rates of P. yessoensis decreased signi?cantly in the T dec treatment but increased dramatically at 6 h in the Ti nc treatment( P <0.05). In the T dec treatment, hepatopancreas antioxidant enzyme activities, superoxide dismutase(SOD) and catalase(CAT) activities, increased substantially within 72 h( P <0.05). However, a signi?cant decrease in CAT activity was found at 12 h in the Ti nc treatment( P <0.01).A signi?cant enhancement of acid phosphatase(ACP) activity and malondialdehyde(MDA) content was detected when scallops were acutely exposed to a temperature of 15°C. The levels of Cu/Zn-SOD gene expression in their gills up-regulated signi?cantly in response to acute temperature changes( P <0.01). These data suggest that acute temperature change af fects physiological and biochemical functions, and improve our knowledge of P. yessoensis under conditions of thermal stress.

Seasonal Variations in Phytoplankton Community Structure in the Sanggou,Ailian,and Lidao Bays

The seasonal variations in phytoplankton community structure were investigated for the Sanggou Bay （SGB） and the adjacent Ailian Bay （ALB） and Lidao Bay （LDB） in Shandong Peninsula,eastern *** species composition and cell abundance of phytoplankton in the bay waters in spring （April 2011）,summer （August 2011）,autumn （October 2011）,and winter （January 2012） were examined using the Uterm6hl method.A total of 80 taxa of phytoplankton that belong to 39 genera of 3 phyla were *** included 64 species of 30 genera in the Phylum Bacillariophyta,13 species of 8 genera in the Phylum Dinophyta,and 3 species of 1 genus in the Phylum *** the four seasons,the number of phytoplankton species （43） was the highest in spring,followed by summer and autumn （40）,and the lowest number ofphytoplankton species （35） was found in ***,especially Paralia sulcata （Ehrenberg） Cleve and Coscinodiscus oculus-iridis Ehrenberg,were predominant in the phytoplankton community throughout the study period,whereas the dominance of dinoflagellate appeared in summer *** maximum cell abundance of phytoplankton was detected in summer （average 8.08 × 103 cells L-1） whereas their minimum abundance was found in autumn （average 2.60 x 103 cellsL-1）.The phytoplankton abundance was generally higher in the outer bay than in the inner bay in spring and *** summer,the phytoplankton cells were mainly concentrated in the south of inner SGB,with peak abundance observed along the western *** winter,the distribution of phytoplankton cells showed 3 patches,with peak abundance along the western coast as *** seasonal average,the Shannon-Wiener diversity indices of phytoplankton community ranged from 1.17 to 1.78 （autumn 〉 summer 〉 spring 〉 winter）,and the Pielou＇s evenness indices of phytoplankton ranged from 0.45 to 0.65 （autumn 〉 spring 〉 summer〉 winter）.According to the results of canonical correspondence analysis,phosphate level was the major factor that li

Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture(IMTA)is an effective method for sustainable aquaculture as species from different trophic levels could reduce negative effects from fed species in the environment.A proper proportion of different trophic species in an IMTA system could improve the aquaculture production and environmental *** present,research on the proper proportions for farming species is *** investigated the effects of IMTA modes of oyster(Crassostrea gigas)and kelp(Saccharina japonica)in different weight ratios on water quality and carbonate system in a closed enclosure experiment for three days in the Sanggou Bay in Shandong Province,China,in December *** collocation modes in oyster:kelp weight ratio were tested showing as 24:3,24:2,24:1,16:3,16:2,16:1,8:3,8:2,and 8:*** water parameters were determined at 17:00 on Day 1(D1),and 6:00 and 17:00 on Days 2(D2)and 3(D3).As two-way ANOVA showed,all increased parameters(dissolved oxygen(DO),pH,chl a,the carbonate system and pCO2)were significantly related to oyster-kelp modes,and interaction between modes and time were also significant(P<0.05).On the 3th day,the 8:3 mode was the highest in DO,pH,chl a,CO32-(P<0.05),and dissolved inorganic carbon(DIC),HCO3-,CO2,and pCO2 were the lowest(P<0.05).According to previous references and the results of this study,the appropriate oyster:kelp proportion at the beginning of winter is from 8:2 to 8:*** results of this study may help government to optimize the aquaculture structure of Sanggou Bay.

Size fraction of phytoplankton and the contribution of natural plankton to the carbon source of Zhikong scallop Chlamys farreri in mariculture ecosystem of the Sanggou Bay

The biomass and size fraction of phytoplankton in terms of chlorophyll a（Chl a） was measured during four cruises conducted in April, July, October 2013 and January 2014 in mariculture area, the Sanggou Bay, *** show that total Chl a levels in the surface seawater of the Sanggou Bay generally range from 0.10 to 20.46μg/L, with an average value of 2.13 μg/L. Nano-phytoplankton was the most important size-fraction and accounted for about 65.1% of total Chl a. In order to evaluate the importance of the ＂protozoan trophic link＂ for energy transfer from the microbial loop to filter-feeding feeders, Zhikong scallop Chlamys farreri was then offered a natural planktonic community as potential prey. Results show that scallops obtained carbon source from natural plankton with the rate of 11 033.05 μg/（g·d）. Protists（nanoflagellates and ciliates） were the dominant source of carbon retained by scallop（48.78%）. The microbial loop provided 58.45% of the carbon source for farmed scallops. These results indicate that the microbial loop represent a valuable trophic resource in mariculture system of the Sanggou Bay.

Tolerance, Oxygen Consumption and Ammonia Excretion of Ophiopholis sarsii vadicola in Different Temperatures and Salinities

There are more than 2000 species of brittle stars in the world. For most of them, many scientific questions including basic characteristics of eco-physiology are still unknown. In the present study, Ophiopholis sarsii vadicola acclimated at 15 ℃, salinity 31, were assessed for temperature monia excretion were studied at different temperatures （5, 10, and salinity tolerance. Its oxygen consumption and am- 15, 20, 25℃） and salinities （25, 30, 35）. O. sarsii vadi- cola could tolerate 0-24℃ and no brittle star was dead in the salinity range of 19-48 in the experimental situation. Two-way ANOVA showed that the oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion normalized with both dry mass and wet mass, Q10, which is used to describe the temperature sensitivity of respiration, and moisture content were significantly affected by temperature and salinity, and the combined effects of the two factors were significant. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that logarithmic oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion showed a significant positive relationship with logarithmic temperature and salinity. The logarithmic moisture content of the brittle stars showed an inverse relationship with logarithmic salinity, but a positive relationship with logarithmic temperature. This suggests that the tolerance of temperature and salinity of brittle stars is closely related to their living environment, and that the effects of temperature on oxygen consumption are more significant at higher salinity, and that the ammonia excretion is less affected by salinity at lower temperatures.

The present study investigated the applicability of integrated polychaete-fish culture for fish waste removal to offset negative impact induced by organic benthic enrichment.A field study demonstrated that deposition rate was significantly higher underneath the fish farm than that in control *** material settling under the farm was characterized by a high amount of fish feces(45%) and uneaten feed(27%).Both feeding rate(FR) and apparent digestibility rate(ADR) increased with decreasing body weight,as was indicated by significantly a higher rate observed for the groups containing smaller individuals in a lab *** nutrient in fresh deposited material(De) was higher than that in sediments collected under the farm(Se),resulting in lower feces production but higher apparent digestibility rate for the De group as feeding rate was ***,higher nutrient removal efficiency was observed in the De group.A mass balance approach indicated that approximately 400–500 individuals m^(-2) is required for removing all waste materials deposited underneath the fish farm,whereas abundance can be lower(about 300–350 individuals m^(-2)) when only the fish waste needs to be *** results showed that a significant amount of waste had been accumulated in the fish cages in Sanggou *** integration of fish with *** seems promising for preventing organic pollution in the sediment and therefore is an effective strategy for mitigating negative effect of fish *** such integration can become a new IMTA(integrated multi-trophic aquaculture) model in Sanggou Bay.

China is the global leader in mariculture production. Increasing sequestered marine carbon(also known as blue carbon) via mariculture activities is a promising approach for mitigating climate change and promoting the development of a low-carbon economy. Mariculture blue carbon is also considered an important component of China's "sea granary". In addition to shellfish and macroalgae yields, which represent carbon removed from mariculture environment, blue carbon also includes other important components, which have been largely neglected in the past, such as the carbon transformed by microbes,dissolved organic carbon(mainly referred to as recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon), and sedimentary particulate carbon. Hence,from different aspects, a comprehensive study on the formation processes and mechanisms of carbon sequestration is of great significance for comprehensively unveiling the carbon sequestration capability in coastal mariculture environment, which will contribute to the sustainable development of the fishery economy and construction of an ecological civilization. Moreover, it may add significant economic benefits to the future carbon-trading market.

Impact of seawater carbonate variables on post-larval bivalve calcification

Several studies have demonstrated that shellfish calcification rate has been impacted by ocean acidification. However, the carbonate system variables responsible for regulating calcification rate are controversial. To distinguish the key variables, we manipulated a seawater carbonate system by regulating seawater pH and dissolved inorganic carbon(DIC). Calcification rates of juvenile blue mussel(M ytilus edulis) and Zhikong scallop(C hlamys farreri) were measured in different carbonate systems. Our results demonstrated that neither [HCO ˉ^+ 3 ], DIC, or p H([H ^+ ]) were determining factors for the shellfish calcification rate of blue mussel or Zhikong scallop. However, a significant correlation was detected between calcification rate and DIC/[H ^+ ] and [CO_3^(2ˉ)] in both species.
