Correlation between Polyphenol Contents and Antioxidant Activities in Different Echinacea Purpurea Varieties

Objective:Polyphenols are complex compounds containing multiple phenolic hydroxyl *** are widely distributed in plants and have antioxidant *** the antioxidant activities of the cultivated varieties of Echinacea are similar to or better than those of the wild ones and the relationship between the accumulation of polyphenols and their antioxidant activities are still not ***:Folin-Ciocalteu method,high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC),2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH)radical scavenging assay,ferric ion reducing antioxidant power(FRAP)assay,2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6)-sulfonic acid(ABTS)radical scavenging assay,and Fe^(2+)chelating ability assay were used,respectively,to detect the total polyphenols and 5 kinds of caffeic acid derivatives(chicoric acid,caffeic acid,caftaric acid,chlorogenic acid,and 1,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid)in the roots,stems,leaves,and flowers,and the antioxidant activities of 3 varieties of Echinacea:*** L.,cultivar ***'Aloha',and ***'White Swan'.Results:*** *** the highest contents of total polyphenols,5 caffeic acid derivatives and antioxidant activities,followed by ***'White Swan'and ***'Aloha',***'White Swan'had the strongest ability to remove the DPPH,ABTS·^(+)and free radicals,and to chelate Fe^(2+);*** *** the strongest ability to reduce *** correlation analyses revealed that the contents of total polyphenols and caffeic acid derivatives of *** *** ***'White Swan'were correlated with their antioxidant ***:*** *** the most appropriate material for the development of medicinal ***'White Swan'could be used as a substitute for *** *** terms of its antioxidant activity.

AIM: To evaluate the clinical factors related to chronic rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). METHODS: A retrospective case-control study. A total of 103 consecutive patients (103 eyes) with primary RRD were studied to evaluate the clinical factors related to chronic RRD. RESULTS: Chi-square test was used to sift out the following associated factors with chronic RRD: younger patients(P=0.0028), better preoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA, P=0.0316), atrophic retinal break (Pmined by stepwise logistic regression analysis as following: atrophic retinal break (odds ratio (OR)=7.997, P=0.007), inferior retinal break (OR=14.127, P<0.0001) and better preoperative BCVA (OR=1.636 P<0.0722). CONCLUSION: Atrophic retinal break, inferior retinal break and better preoperative BCVA are the independent risk factors related to chronic RRD.

Influence of the Energy Level Matching on the Performances of Organic/Polymeric Electroluminescent Devices

The performances such as the operating-voltage and the brightness of three types of devices: single-layer device, double-layer device and three-layer device, were examined. It is demonstrated that the I-V characteristics of single-layer device depends not on the applied voltage but instead on the electric-field strength, and the brightness increased by a factor of 50 and the operating-voltage decreased when introducing one electron transporting layer or an electron transporting layer and one hole blocking layer between the light emitting layer and the negative electrode. In fact, it is imperative to match the energy level of each layer in the electroluminescent device in order to improve its comprehensive performances.

Changes in Rat Brain MicroRNA Expression Profiles Following Sevoflurane and Propofol Anesthesia

Background： Sevoflurane and propofol are widely nsed anesthetics focused on changes in protein expression properties and membrane for surgery. Studies on the mechanisms of general anesthesia have lipid. MicroRNAs （miRNAs） regulate neural function by altering protein expression. We hypothesize that sevoflurane and propofol affect miRNA expression profiles in the brain, expect to understand the mechanism of anesthetic agents. Methods： Rats were randomly assigned to a 2% sevoflurane group, 600 μg-kg -1min propofol group, and a control group without anesthesia （n = 4, respectively）. Treatment group was under anesthesia for 6 h, and all rats breathed spontaneously with continuous monitoring of respiration and blood gases. Changes in rat cortex miRNA expression profiles were analyzed by miRNA microarrays and validated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction （qRT-PCR）. Differential expression of miRNA using qRT-PCR among the control, sevoflurane, and propotbl groups were compared using one-way analysis of variance （ANOVA）. Results： Of 677 preloaded rat miRNAs, the microarray detected the expression of 277 miRNAs in rat cortex （40.9%）, of which 9 were regulated by propofol and （or） sevoflurane. Expression levels of three miRNAs （rno-miR-339-3p, rno-miR-448, rno-miR-466b- 1 ＊） were significantly increased following sevoflurane and six （rno-miR-339-3p, rno-miR-347, rno-miR-378＊, rno-miR-412＊, rno-miR-702-3p, and rno-miR-7a-2＊） following propofol. Three miRNAs （rno-miR-466b-I ＊, rno-miR-3584-Sp and rno-miR-702-3p） were differentially expressed by the two anesthetic treatment groups. Conclusions： Sevoflurane and propofol anesthesia induced distinct changes in brain miRNA expression patterns, suggesting differential regulation of protein expression. Determining the targets of these differentially expressed miRNAs may help reveal both the common and agent-specific actions of anesthetics on neurological and physiological function.

Propofol Ameliorates Calpain-induced Collapsin Response Mediator Protein-2 Proteolysis in Traumatic Brain Injury in Rats

Background： Collapsin response mediator protein-2 （CRMP2）, a multifunctional cytosolic protein highly expressed in the brain, is degraded by calpain following traumatic brain injury （TBI）, possibly inhibiting posttraumatic neurite regeneration. Lipid peroxidation （LP） is involved in triggering postinjury CRMP2 proteolysis. We examined the hypothesis that propo（bl could attenuate LP, calpain-induced CRMP2 degradation, and brain injury after TBI. Methods： A unilateral moderate controlled cortical impact injury was induced in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals were randomly divided into seven groups： Sham control group, TBI group, TB1 ＋ propofol groups （including propofol I h, 2 h, and 4 h groups）, TBI ＋ U83836E group and TBI ＋ fat emulsion group. The LP inhibitor U83836E was used as a control to identify that antioxidation partially accounts for the potential neuroprotective effects of propofol. The solvent of propofol, （＇at emulsion, was used as the vehicle control, lpsilateral cortex tissues were harvested at 24 h post-TBI. Immunofluorescent staining, Western blot analysis, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling were used to evaluate LP, calpain activity, CRMP2 proteolysis and programmed cell death. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and a paired t-test. Results： Propofol and U83836E significantly ameliorated the CRMP2 proteolysis, In addition, both propofol and U83836E significantly decreased the ratio of 145-kDa cdl-spectrin breakdown products to intact 270-kDa spectrin, the 4-hydroxynonenal expression and programmed cell death in the pericontusional cortex at 24 h after TBI. There was no difference between the TB1 group and the （＇at emulsion group. Conclusions： These results demonstrate that propofol postconditioning alleviates calpain-mediated CRMP2 proteolysis and provides neuroprotective effects following moderate TBI potentially by counteracting LP and reducing calpain activation

Optimal incision sites to reduce corneal aberration variations after small incision phacoemulsification cataract surgery

AIM： To analyze the effect of steep meridian small incision phacoemulsification cataract surgery on anterior,posterior and total corneal wavefront aberration.· METHODS： Steep meridian small incision phacoemulsification cataract surgery was performed in age-related cataract patients which were divided into three groups according to the incision site： 12 o＇clock, 9o＇clock and between 9 and 12 o＇clock（BENT） incision groups. The preoperative and 3-month postoperative root mean square（RMS） values of anterior, posterior and total corneal wavefront aberration including coma,spherical aberration, and total higher-order aberrations（HOAs）, were measured by Pentacam scheimpflug imaging. The mean preoperative and postoperative corneal wavefront aberrations were documented.·RESULTS： Total corneal aberration and total lower-order aberrations decreased significantly in three groups after operation. RMS value of total HOAs decreased significantly postoperatively in the 12 o＇clock incision group（P 〈0.001）. Corneal spherical aberration was statistically significantly lower after steep meridian small incision phacoemulsification cataract surgery in BENT incision group（P 〈0.05） and Pearson correlation analysisindicated that spherical aberration changes had no significant relationship with total astigmatism changes in all three corneal incision location.·CONCLUSION： Corneal incision of phacoemulsification cataract surgery can affect corneal wavefront *** 12 o＇clock corneal incision eliminated more HOAs and the spherical aberrations decreased in BENT incision group obviously when we selected steep meridian small incision. Cataract lens replacement using wavefront-corrected intraocular lens combined with optimized corneal incision site would improve ocular aberration results.

BACKGROUND The guiding effect of prognostic stratification in multiple myeloma(MM) for treatment has been increasingly emphasized in recent years. According to IL-32 level, patients were divided into two *** variables under consideration included age, blood β2-microglobulin,albumin, C-reactive protein, serum calcium, serum creatinine, lactate dehydrogenase, M protein type, ISS stage, DS stage, and IL-32 levels and minimal residual disease(MRD) after induction treatment. The main outcomes were progression-free survival(PFS) and overall survival(OS).RESULTS IL-32 was an important factor affecting PFS and OS in patients with *** with patients with IL-32 levels ≥ 856.4 pg/m L, patients with IL-32 levels < 856.4 pg/m L had longer PFS(P = 0.0387) and OS(P = 0.0379);Univariate analysis showed that IL-32 level and MRD were significantly associated with OS and PFS(P < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that IL-32 levels ≥ 856.4 pg/m L and MRD positive were still independent risk factors for OS and PFS(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION IL-32 is valuable for assessing the prognosis of MM patients. IL-32 level combined with MRD may be a useful routine evaluation index for MM patients after treatment.

North Atlantic subtropical mode water formation controlled by Gulf Stream fronts

The North Atlantic Ocean hosts the largest volume of global subtropical mode waters(STMWs) in the world,which serve as heat,carbon and oxygen silos in the ocean *** are formed in the Gulf Stream region where thermal fronts are pervasive and result in feedback with the ***,their roles in STMW formation have been *** eddy-resolving global climate simulations,we find that suppressing local frontal-scale ocean-to-atmosphere(FOA) feedback leads to STMW formation being reduced almost by *** is because FOA feedback enlarges STMW outcropping,attributable to the mixed layer deepening associated with cumulative excessive latent heat loss due to higher wind speeds and greater air-sea humidity contrast driven by the Gulf Stream *** enhanced heat loss overshadows the stronger restratification induced by vertical eddies and turbulent heat transport,making STMW colder and he *** more realistic representation of FOA feedback,the eddy-present/rich coupled global climate models reproduce the observed STMWs much better than the eddy-free *** improvement in STMW production cannot be achieved,even with the oceanic resolution solely refined but without coupling to the overlying atmosphere in oceanic general circulation *** findings highlight the need to resolve FOA feedback to ameliorate the common severe underestimation of STMW and associated heat and carbon uptakes in earth system mo dels.

Superior pancreatic lymphadenectomy with portal vein priority via posterior common hepatic artery approach in laparoscopic radical gastrectomy

BACKGROUND D2 lymph node dissection for advanced gastric cancer is advocated,and station 8p lymph node should be considered in selected patients,which is,however,technically *** To introduce a new and easy-to-perform procedure for dissection of the lymph nodes superior to the *** A series of patients who underwent laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer were retrospectively included with utilization of a new procedure for superior pancreatic lymphadenectomy(LND)with portal vein priority via the posterior common hepatic artery approach(SPLD-PPPH)based on a newly defined portal *** surgical outcome of the patients,as well as the efficacy and safety of SPLD-PPPH are *** A total of 51 patients were included with most of them being male(n=34,66.7%).According to the 8th edition of AJCC TNM staging,there were four(7.8%)patients in stage I,13(25.5%)in stage II,33(64.7%)in stage III and one(2.0%)in stage *** average duration for LND was about 1 h(67.7±6.9 min).After surgery,four patients developed morbidities,but all were treated successfully with no perioperative *** the 51 patients included,the percentage of patients who had lymph node metastasis at station 8p was 9.8%.Of note,with a total of 14 lymph nodes harvested at station 8p,the incidence of nodal metastasis was 14.3%.CONCLUSION About one in 10 patients with advanced gastric cancer had nodal metastasis at station *** new approach of SPLD-PPPH is safe and effective for D2+LND during laparoscopic radical gastrectomy.
