The Digital Earth concept as originally proposed by former US Vice president Al Gore is now well established and widely adopted ***,many researchers world-wide are studying the causes,effects and impacts of Global *** authors commence by describing a five-step approach to the development of Digital Earth *** is followed by a detailed account of Digital Earth research and developments in *** authors then present the research results of Global Change studies carried out in China,based on the Digital Earth *** research results are based on a classification of global change *** covers the following global change situations:Forest and grassland fires in Northern China,temperate region desertification and dust storms,underground coal fires,deforestation and carbon sequestration,protection and utilisation of wetlands,Avian Influenza and the spread of diseases,Tibet Plateau uplift and sub-tropical monsoon climate region,and sea-level *** research results show that the environment does not behave in a way easily understood by the traditional disciplinary *** man is clearly a contributing factor to certain Global Change aspects,such as underground coal fires,desertification,land use changes etc.,many of the aspects of Global Change are naturally occurring phenomena which have been changing over centuries,and will continue to do so,no matter what actions we undertake to reverse these ***,in their conclusions,the authors propose that the communities involved in Digital Earth modelling and in Global Change research co-operate closer to overcome the limitations inherent in the current‘conventional’scientific approach,where scientists have very much stayed within their respective scientific *** an integrated approach will enable us to build the next level of scientific infrastructure required to understand and predict naturally occurring environmental changes,as well as

In Air Traffic Control extensive use is planned of data links. One of the major candidates is the data link capability of SSR mode *** data link capability of SSR mode S however is rather limited when using conventional rotating antennas with a short and fixed time-on-target,and a long time interval between two successive beam *** results in a high access delay and too long transaction times for long messages consisting of several ELM frames. The paper presents a method for the analysis of the cause of reply losses,and then discusses a novel approach to the data link’s short comings,while maintaining the surveillance capability:the substitution of a number of interrogators with a rotating antenna by a distributed network of(listen-only)SSR mode S ground system receivers and a transmitter. The results show that the mode S transponders suffer from a high reply loss,by occupancy due to mode A/C interrogations, and shows that the novel approach offers adequate data link performance while maintaining the reply loss numbers at an acceptable low probability.

Essential thrombocythemia(ET) and polycythemia vera(PV) frequently present with erythromelalgia and acrocyanotic complications, migraine-like microvascular cerebral and ocular transient ischemic attacks(MIAs) and/or acute coronary disease. The spectrum of MIAs in ET range from poorly localized symptoms of transient unsteadiness, dysarthria and scintillating scotoma to focal symptoms of transient monocular blindness, transient mono- or hemiparesis or both. The attacks all have a sudden onset, occur sequentially rather than simultaneously, last for a few seconds to several minutes and are usually associated with a dull, pulsatile or migraine-like headache. Increased hematocrit and blood viscosity in PV patients aggravate the microvascular ischemic syndrome of thrombocythemia to major arterial and venous thrombotic complications. Phlebotomy to correct hematocrit to normal in PV significantly reduces major arterial and venous thrombotic complications, but fails to prevent the platelet-mediated erythromelalgia and MIAs. Complete long-term relief of the erythromelalgic microvascular disturbances, MIAs and major thrombosis in ET and PV patients can be obtained with low dose aspirin and platelet reduction to normal, but not with anticoagulation. Skin punch biopsies from the erythromelalgic area show fibromuscular intimal proliferation of arterioles complicated by occlusive plateletrich thrombi leading to acrocyanotic ischemia. Symptomatic ET patients with erythromelalgic microvascular disturbances have shortened platelet survival, increased platelet activation markers β-thromboglobulin(β-TG), platelet factor 4(PF4) and thrombomoduline(TM), increased urinary thromboxane B2(TXB2) excretion, and no activation of the coagulation markers thrombin fragments F1+2 and fibrin degradation products. Inhibition of platelet cyclooxygenase(COX1) by aspirin is followed by the disappearance and no recurrence of microvascular disturbances, increase in platelet number, correction of the shor
