The U.S. Geological Survey has a rich tradition of collecting hydrologic data, especially for fluxes of water and suspended sediment, that provide a foundation for studies of soil and water conservation. Applied and basic research has included investigations of the effects of land use on rangelands, croplands, and forests; hazards mapping; derivation of flood and drought frequency, and other statistics related to streamflow and reservoir storage; development and application of models of rainfall-runoff relations, chemical quality, and sediment movement; and studies of the interactive processes of overland and channel flow with vegetation. Networks of streamgaging stations and (or) sampling sites within numerous drainage basins are yielding information that extends databases and enhances the ability to use those data for interpretive studies.

A "Watershed-Scale Sediment Information Network" (WaSSIN), designed to complement UNESCO’s International Sedimentation Initiative, was endorsed as an initial project by the World Association for Sedimentation and Erosion Research. WaSSIN is to address global fluvial-sediment information needs through a network approach based on consistent protocols for the collection, analysis, and storage of fluvial-sediment and ancillary information at smaller spatial scales than those of the International Sedimentation Initiative. As a second step of implementation, it is proposed herein that the WaSSIN have a general structure of two components, (1) monitoring and data acquisition and (2) research. Monitoring is to be conducted in small watersheds, each of which has an established database for discharge of water and suspended sediment and possibly for bed load, bed material, and bed topography. Ideally, documented protocols have been used for collecting, analyzing, storing, and sharing the derivative data. The research component is to continue the collection and interpretation of data, to compare those data among candidate watersheds, and to determine gradients of fluxes and processes among the selected watersheds. To define gradients and evaluate processes, the initial watersheds will have several common attributes. Watersheds of the first group will be: (1) six to ten in number, (2) less than 1000 km2 in area, (3) generally in mid-latitudes of continents, and (4) of semiarid climate. Potential candidate watersheds presently include the Weany Creek Basin, northeastern Australia, the Zhi Fanggou catchment, northern China, the Eshtemoa Watershed, southern Israel, the Metsemotlhaba River Basin, Botswana, the Aiuaba Experimental Basin, Brazil, and the Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed, southwestern United States.

The structural stability of methane hydrate under pressure at room temperature was examined by both in-situ single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques on samples with structure types I, II, and H in diamond-anvil ceils. The diffraction data for types II （slI） and H （sH） were refined to the known structures with space groups Fd3m and P63/mmc, respectively. Upon compression, sl methane hydrate transforms to the sll phase at 120 MPa, and then to the sH phase at 600 MPa. The slI methane hydrate was found to coexist locally with sI phase up to 500 MPa and with sH phase up to 600 MPa. The pure sH structure was found to be stable between 600 and 900 MPa. Methane hydrate decomposes at pressures above 3 GPa to form methane with the orientationally disordered Fm3m structure and ice VII （Pn3m）. The results highlight the role of guest （CH4）-host （H2O） interactions in the stabilization of the hydrate structures under pressure.

The Cosic Resonance Recognition Model (RRM) for amino acid sequences was applied to the classes of proteins displayed by four strains (Sudan, Zaire, reston, Ivory Coast) of Ebola virus that produced either high or minimal numbers of human fatalities. The results clearly differentiated highly lethal and non-lethal strains. Solutions for the two lethal strains exhibited near ultraviolet (~230 nm) photon values while the two asymptomatic forms displayed near infrared (~1000 nm) values. Cross-correlations of spectral densities of the RRM values of the different classes of proteins associated with the genome of the viruses supported this dichotomy. The strongest coefficient occurred only between Sudan-Zaire strains but not for any of the other pairs of strains for sGP, the small glycoprotein that intercalated with the plasma cell membrane to promote insertion of viral contents into cellular space. A surprising, statistically significant cross-spectral correlation occurred between the “spike” glycoprotein component (GP1) of the virus that associated the anchoring of the virus to the mammalian cell plasma membrane and the Schumann resonance of the earth whose intensities were determined by the incidence of equatorial thunderstorms. Previous applications of the RRM to shifting photon wavelengths emitted by melanoma cells adapting to reduced ambient temperature have validated Cosic’s model and have demonstrated very narrowwave-length (about 10 nm) specificity. One possible ancillary and non-invasive treatment of people within which the fatal Ebola strains are residing would be whole body application of narrow band near-infrared light pulsed as specific physiologically-patterned sequences with sufficient radiant flux density to perfuse the entire body volume.
