AIM To test the hypothesis that helicobacter pylori eradication alone can reduce the incidence of gastric cancer in a subgroup of individuals with an increased risk for this fatal *** It is a prospective, randomized,double-blind, placebo-controlled multinational multicenter trial. Men between 55 and 65 years of age with a gastric cancer phenotype of helicobacterpylori gastritis are randomized to receive a 7-day course of omeprazole 2 × 20 mg,clarithromycin 2 × 500 mg, and amoxicillin 2 ×lg for 7 days, or omeprazole2 × 20mg plusplacebo. Follow - up endoscopy is scheduled 3months after therapy, and thereafter in one-year intervals. Predefined study endpoints are gastric cancer, precancerous lesions (dysplasia, adenoma), other cancers, *** Since March 1998, 1524 target patients have been screened, 279 patients (18.3%) had a corpus-dominant type of *** gastritis, and 167 of those were randomized (58.8%). In the active treatment group (n -- 86), h. pylori infection infection was cured in 88.9% of patients. Currently, thecumulative follow-up time is 3046 months (253.8patient-years, median follow-up 16 months). So far, none of the patients developed gastric cancer or any precancerous lesion. Three(1.8%) patients reached study endpoints other than gastric *** Among men between 55 and 65years of age, the gastric cancer phenotype of *** gastritis appears to be more common than expected. Further follow- up and continuing recruitment are necessary to fulfil the main aim of the study.

Dielectric constant of baTiO ceramics are theoretically calculated based on the chemical structure of the oxides and the mixing rule of dielectric material in this paper. Meanwhile, the microwave properties (εr, Q and τf) of practical ba2Ti9O20 ceramics are experimentally measured at microwave frequencies. Some of useful suggestions are therefore provided for material optimization of practical ceramics.

The prime function of the Philippine National Collection of Microorganisms (PNCM), being the national repository of microbial strains, is to collect and preserve strains for their continued viability and availability for future use. To date, a total of 2144 strains of bacteria (1357), yeasts (250), filamentous fungi (377), algae (14), and strains still to be identified (146) are maintained at the PNCM. These are preserved and maintained using various methods which include modified liquid drying (lyophilization), ultra-low temperature (-70℃) storage in 10% glycerol, storage in sterile soil, distilled water and overlaying with mineral oil. Periodic viability testing is done to assess the stability of these preserved cultures under storage. Aside from preservation and maintenance of cultures, the PNCM is also involved in several research activities. One of these is the isolation, characterization and identification of some Vibrio isolates from the Philippines. Details on this particular study is presented in this report.

Very preterm infants who develop bronchopulmonarydysplasia are often treated with dexamethasone (DEXA) to wean them from the ventilator. As DEXA has growth-supp-ressive and catabolic effects, which might have long-term consequences on growth and organ development, we investigated whether high-dose Gh treatment could overcome these effects. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 30 ventilated very low birth weight infants were assigned to receive either Gh or placebo treatment after start of DEXA. DEXA was given for 24 d (starting dose 0.5 mg· kg- 1· d- 1, tapering off every third day). Simultaneously, high-dose Gh (0.3 mg· kg- 1· d- 1) or placebo was administered during 6 wk. During high-dose DEXA treatment (dose 0.5- 0.3 mg· kg- 1· d- 1), no gain in head circumference, weight, crown-heel length, and knee-heel length occurred in the Gh and placebo groups. Growth during the 6- wk study period was not different between the Gh and the placebo groups. Two patients in the placebo group died, but the number and the severity of adverse effects was not statistically different between the Gh and placebo groups. In conclusion, high-dose Gh treatment did not improve growth in DEXAtreated very preterm infants and thus cannot be recommended to prevent growth failure in these infants. During high-dose DEXA, a complete growth arrest occurred, including stunting of head growth. Growth in head circumference and weight with lower dose DEXA was comparable to growth after discontinuation of DEXA.

Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is an autoimmune disease of unknown etiology, often associated with other autoimmune conditions. Controlled studies have so far provided conflicting data on risk factors and comorbidity rates in PBC. We enrolled patients with PBC (n = 1032) from 23 tertiary referral centers for liver diseases in the United States and random-digitdialed controls (n = 1041) matched for sex, age, race, and geographical location. Patients and controls were administered a modified version of the US National health and Nutrition Examination Study (NhANES III) questionnaire by trained personnel to evaluate associations between PBC and social, demographic, personal and family medical histories, lifestyle, and reproductive factors and the rates of comorbidity in affected individuals. Data indicate that having a first-degree relative with PBC (adjusted odds ratio AOR 10.736; 95% confidence interval 4.227-27.268), history of urinary tract infections (AOR1.511,95% CI 1.192-1.915),past smoking (AOR 1.569, 95% CI 1.292-1.905), or use of hormone replacement therapies (AOR 1.548, 95% CI 1.273-1.882)were significantly associated with increased risk of PBC. The frequent use of nail polish slightly increased the risk of having PBC. Other autoimmune diseases were found in 32% of cases and 13% of controls (P hrough urinary tract infections or chemicals contained in cigarette smoke, may induce PBC in genetically susceptible individuals. Exogenous estrogens may also contribute to explain the female predominance of the disease.

In order to study the temporal and spatial variations of PM 2.5 and its chemical compositions in the region of Beijing, Tianjin, and hebei （BTh）, PM 2.5 samples were collected at four urban sites in Beijing （Bj）, Tianjin （Tj）, Shijiazhuang （SjZ）, and Chengde （CD）, and also one site at Shangdianzi （SDZ） regional background station over four seasons from 2009 to 2010. The samples were weighted for mass concentrations and analyzed in the laboratory for chemical profiles of 19 elements （Al, As, ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, P, Pb, Sr, Ti, V, and Zn）, eight water-soluble inorganic ions （Na+ , Nh4+ , K+ , Mg2+ , Ca2+ , Cl- , NO3- , and SO42- ）, and carbon fractions （OC and EC）. The concentrations of PM 2.5 and its major chemical species were season dependent and showed spatially similar characteristics in the plain area of BTh. The average annual concentrations of PM 2.5 were 71.8-191.2 μgm -3 at the five sites, with more than 90% of sampling days exceeding 50 μg m -3 at Bj, Tj, and SjZ. PM 2.5 pollution was most serious at SjZ, and the annual concentrations of PM 2.5 , secondary inorganic ions, OC, EC, and most crustal elements were all highest. Due to stronger photochemical oxidation, the sum of concentrations of secondary inorganic ions （Nh4+ , NO3- , and SO42- ） was highest in the summer at SDZ, Bj, Tj, and CD. Analysis of electric charges of water-soluble inorganic ions indicated the existence of nitric acid or hydrochloric acid in PM 2.5 . For all five sites, the concentrations of OC, EC and also secondary organic carbon （SOC） in the spring and summer were lower than those in the autumn and winter. SOC had more percentages of increase than primary organic carbon （POC） during the winter. The sums of crustal elements （Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, Ti, ba, and Sr） were higher in the spring and autumn owing to more days with blowing or floating dust. 【目的】为南酸枣果实的贮藏提供参考。【方法】以成熟的南酸枣果实为试验材料,将其分别放置于5、10、15和20℃(常温)条件下贮藏,使用色彩色差计测定果皮色泽,采用质构仪质地多面分析法测定贮藏期间果肉的质地参数,探讨不同贮藏温度条件下南酸枣果实贮藏期间果皮色泽和果肉质地的变化,并使用SPSS软件对各指标进行相关性分析。【结果】在贮藏期间,南酸枣果皮L^(*)值、b^(*)值、C^(*)值和h^(*)值逐渐降低,a^(*)值逐渐升高,果实硬度随贮藏时长延长逐渐降低,果实弹性、内聚性和回复性整体呈增加的变化趋势,咀嚼性呈先升高、后下降的变化趋势。相关性分析结果表明,南酸枣果皮颜色与果实质地间存在显著相关性。与常温贮藏相比,低温冷藏能够有效延缓南酸枣果皮L^(*)值、b^(*)值、C^(*)值、h^(*)值和果实硬度的下降,抑制果皮a^(*)值的升高,同时提高南酸枣果实的采后弹性、内聚性和回复性,其中,5℃条件下冷藏效果最佳。在贮藏末期,5℃条件下贮藏果实的L^(*)值、b^(*)值、C^(*)值和h^(*)值均高于其他处理组,且显著高于20℃条件下贮藏的果实,a^(*)值低于其他处理,并且5℃条件下贮藏的南酸枣果实硬度、弹性、内聚性和回复性均维持在较高水平。【结论】低温贮藏能有效延缓南酸枣果实贮藏期间果皮颜色和果实质地的劣变,提高果皮品质。在5、10、15和20℃贮藏条件中,以5℃低温条件下冷藏效果最佳。
