Background:Hepatitis C(HCV)remains a serious public health problem in high-risk persons such as patients on chronic *** aimed to estimate the serological prevalence of HCV,the HCV viral load and genotype,and liver fibrosis stage among patients on chronic hemodialysis at the National Renal Health Center in Lima,***:From june 2019 to March 2021,all patients who received chronic hemodialysis were invited to *** who provided written informed consent were *** with HCV-positive serology underwent determination of HCV viral *** from subjects with detectable viral load,underwent determination of HCV ***,HCV infected subjects underwent determination of liver fibrosis using transitional elastography(Fibroscan 402):Metavir score:F0-F1:2.5-7.5 kPa,F2:7.6-9.5 Kpa,F3:9.6-12 Kpa,F4(Cirrhosis):12.1-75 ***:Of the 303 subjects invited to participate,174(57.4%)subjects gave their written *** age was 52 years(range 22-91)and 116(66.6%)were *** serology was positive in 35.1%of patients(61/174);however,the prevalence of positive serology with detectable viral load was 20.11%(35/174).Genotype 1a was the most prevalent(85%).The majority(83.6%)of subjects with detectable viral load had values lower than 800.000 IU/***-nine of those 35 subjects underwent elastography evaluation,and 13(44.8%)of them were found to have stage F2-F4 ***:The prevalence of HCV at the largest reference center for hemodialysis in Lima remains high,with GT1a predominance,viral load usually below 800,000 IU/mL and significant liver fibrosis.

Exercise and antioxidant supplements in the elderly

Both exercise and aging increase reactive oxygen species （ROS）, which can result in damage to cells. Aging is the result of damage caused by ROS to the mitochondrial genome in post mitotic cells and numerous studies have demonstrated an increase in ROS or their byproducts with exercise. ROS can cause oxidative stress as they overwhelm the antioxidant cellular defenses. Therefore interventions aimed at limiting or inhibiting ROS production, such as supplementation with antioxidant vitamins, should be able to reduce fatigue during muscle contraction and the rate of formation of aging changes with a consequent reduction of the aging rate and disease pathogenesis. However, it has been shown that ROS are essential signaling molecules which are required to promote the health benefits of exercise and longevity. In young individuals, ROS are required for normal force production in skeletal muscle, for the development of training-induced adaptations in endurance performance, as well as for the induction of the endogenous defense systems. Thus, taking antioxidants during training, in young athletes, seems to be detrimental. However, antioxidant supplementation may be expected to be beneficial and is receiving growing attention in the active old population. In this manuscript we review the literature associated with the main areas of interest in this topic.

Antibacterial activities of ethanol extracts of Philippine medicinal plants against multidrug-resistant bacteria

Objective: To investigate the antibacterial activities of crude ethanol extracts of 12 Philippine medicinal ***: Crude ethanol extracts from 12 Philippine medicinal plants were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycinresistant Enterococcus, extended spectrum β-lactamase-producing, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae and metallo-β-lactamase-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii. Results: The leaf extracts of Psidium guajava, Phyllanthus niruri, Ehretia microphylla and Piper betle(P. betle) showed antibacterial activity against the Gram-positive methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus. P. betle showed the highest antibacterial activity for these bacteria in the disk diffusion(16-33 mm inhibition diameter), minimum inhibitory concentration(19-156 μg/m L) and minimum bactericidal concentration(312 μg/m L) assays. P. betle leaf extracts only showed remarkable antibacterial activity for all the Gram-negative multidrug-resistant bacteria(extended spectrum β-lactamaseproducing, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae and metallo-β-lactamase-producing) in the disk diffusion(17-21 mm inhibition diameter), minimum inhibitory concentration(312-625 μg/m L) and minimum bactericidal concentration(312-625 μg/m L) assays. Conclusions: P. betle had the greatest potential value against both Gram-negative and Grampositive multidrug-resistant bacteria. Favorable antagonistic activities were also exhibited by the ethanol extracts of Psidium guajava, Phyllanthus niruri and Ehretia microphylla.

Intelligibility of Reverberant Speech with Amplification: Limitation of Speech Intelligibility Metrics, and a Preliminary Examination of an Alternative Approach

This study examines the effect of speech level on intelligibility in different reverberation conditions, and explores the potential of loudness-based reverberation parameters proposed by Lee et al. [j. Acoust. Soc. Am., 131(2), 1194-1205 (2012)] to explain the effect of speech level on intelligibility in various reverberation conditions. Listening experiments were performed with three speech levels (LAeq of 55 dB, 65 dB and 75 dB) and three reverberation conditions (T20 of 1.0 s, 1.9 s and 4.0 s), and subjects listened to speech stimuli through headphones. Collected subjective data were compared with two conventional speech intelligibility parameters (Speech Intelligibility Index and Speech Transmission Index) and two loudness-based reverberation parameters (EDTN and TN). Results reveal that the effect of speech level on intelligibility changes with a room’s reverberation conditions, and that increased level results in reduced intelligibility in highly reverberant conditions. EDTN and TN explain this finding better than do STI and SII, because they consider many psychoacoustic phenomena important for the modeling of the effect of speech level varying with reverberation.

Herbivores can drastically alter the morphology of macroalgae by directly consuming tissue and by inflicting structural wounds. Macroalgae host abundant and diverse epibiont communities, the dynamics of which tend to be mostly unknown in space and time. As the cultivation of macroalgae gains momentum worldwide, it is key to measure how epibionts could affect algal performance. We examined the epibiont community associated with farmed Alsidium triquetrum, a red macroalga with growing pharmacological interest. Measurements were conducted over two independent 60-day periods, one in summer and one in winter. Epibionts showed different patterns of succession in both seasons. Crustaceans, mainly amphipods, showed the highest overall density, with deleterious effects on daily growth rates of A. triquetrum in winter. Adverse effects as a function of epibionts were not detected in summer. A. triquetrum is a perennial alga. However, its performance as a crop in the nearshore can be significantly affected by the epibiont community structure that persists in winter. Amphipods and ascoglossan molluscs were risk factors in the mariculture of this agarophyte. In winter, they can destroy plants when they reach more than five individuals per gram of fresh biomass. Results highlight that commercial farming of A. triquetrum would be successful if grown throughout the summer.

The SARS-CoV-2-caused COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a devastating threat to human society in terms of health,economy,and *** the virus usually first invades and infects the lung and respiratory track tissue,in extreme cases,almost all major organs in the body are now known to be negatively impacted often leading to severe systemic failure in some ***,there is currently no effective treatment for this ***-existing pathological conditions or comorbidities such as age are a major reason for premature death and increased morbidity and *** immobilization due to hospitalization and bed rest and the physical inactivity due to sustained quarantine and social distancing can downregulate the ability of organs systems to resist to viral infection and increase the risk of damage to the immune,respiratory,cardiovascular,musculoskeletal systems and the *** cellular mechanisms and danger of this“second wave”effect of COVID-19 to the human body,along with the effects of aging,proper nutrition,and regular physical activity,are reviewed in this article.

大熊猫谱系数据是研究大熊猫种群动态性的重要数据基础,因此从保护大熊猫的角度考虑,大熊猫生态系统的数据建模具有重要意义。针对该问题提出了一种使用种群动态膜系统对大熊猫生态系统进行数据建模的方法。基于中国动物园协会已发布的大熊猫谱系数据从大熊猫个体行为上来模拟研究中国大熊猫保护研究中心圈养大熊猫种群特征,详细分析繁殖参数的变化规律并加入野放模块,设计了一个符合其特点的具有两层嵌套膜结构、对象集合和一系列进化规则的种群动态膜系统。在该膜系统的仿真实验中得到的全体大熊猫仿真结果与实际数据的相对误差最大不超过±4.13%,基本控制在±2.7%以内。实验结果验证了该计算模型的有效性和正确性,能够模拟预测大熊猫种群的变化趋势,给管理者的决策提供依据。

Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus Causes Catheter Associated Bacteriemia in a Patient with Esophagus Adenocarcinome

We report a case of a man suffering esophagus adenocarcinome who acquired catheter associated bacteriemia caused by a coagulase negative Staphylococcus. This CoNS was sensible to linezolid, teicoplanine, vancomycin and rifampicin. This information was relevant for antibiotherapy planning. The patient was successfully treated with teicoplanin together with the catheter exchange. In conclusion, infections should be treated with adequate doses and duration of antibiotics together with catheter exchange. Pre-emptive measurements in the cancer patient and establishing the most adequate treatment are imperative for obtaining good results.
