Energy saving in existing buildings is of vital *** this work,the characterization of housing stock in Spain for energy retrofitting purposes has been *** regulations in force when the existing stock was constructed(1980–2007)were considered to model the envelope and thermal systems of single-family and block *** energy consumption and cO_(2) emissions were estimated for each type of dwelling and location,ranging from 44.2 to 130.6 kWh/(m^(2)·year)(13.6–32 kg cO_(2)/(m^(2)·year))for multi-family homes,and 85.5 to 213.5 kWh/(m^(2)·year)(17.1–45.2 kg cO_(2)/(m^(2)·year))for single-family homes.A global picture of the energy performance and emissions for 13 different climate zones was obtained with a total of 504 *** of the envelope allowed the reduction of consumption and emissions from 37.7%to 58%,depending on the climate *** consumption per square meter in block housing was lower than in single-family housing;nevertheless,single-family houses responded more effectively to energy improvement ***,non-renewable primary energy savings seem a better indicator of the improvement by retrofitting than the energy *** building models designed in this work may serve as a reference for subsequent research concerning energy retrofitting and energy savings of housing stock.

The electrochemical cO_(2) reduction reaction(cO_(2)RR) to controllable chemicals is considered as a promising pathway to store intermittent renewable energy. Herein, a set of catalysts based on copper-nitrogendoped carbon xerogel(cu-N-c) are successfully developed varying the copper amount and the nature of the copper precursor, for the efficient cO_(2)RR. The electrocatalytic performance of cu-N-c materials is assessed by a rotating ring-disc electrode(RRDE), technique still rarely explored for cO_(2)RR. For comparison, products are also characterized by online gas chromatography in a H-cell. The as-synthesized cu-Nc catalysts are found to be active and highly cO selective at low overpotentials(from -0.6 to -0.8 V ***) in 0.1 m KHcO_(3), while H_(2) from the competitive water reduction appears at larger overpotentials(-0.9 V vs. RHE). The optimum copper acetate-derived catalyst containing cu-N_(4) moieties exhibits a cO_(2)-to-cO turnover frequency of 997 h^(-1) at -0.9 V vs. RHE with a H_(2)/cO ratio of 1.8. These results demonstrate that RRDE configuration can be used as a feasible approach for identifying electrolysis products from cO_(2)RR.

AIm:To examine the detection rate of viable mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis(mAP) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease [crohn's disease(cD) and ulcerative colitis(Uc)].mETHODS:Thirty patients with cD(15 with at least one NOD2/cARD15 mutation),29 with Uc,and 10 with no inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).were tested for mAP by polymerase chain reaction(specific IS900 fragment) and blood ***:mAP DNA was detected in all original blood samples and 8-wk blood cultures(cD,Uc and non-IBD).Positive mAP DNA status was confirmed by dot blot *** 69 cultures were negative by acid-fast Ziehl-Neelsen *** mAP,in spheroplast form,was isolated from the 18-mo blood cultures of all 30 cD patients,one Uc patient,and none of the non-IBD *** association was found between positive mAP cultures and use of immunosuppressive drugs or cDassociated single nucleotide ***:mAP is widely present in our area and mAP DNA can be recovered from the blood of cD,Uc and non-IBD ***,mAP spheroplasts were only found in cD patients.

Nuclear accidents have led to the release to the environment of radioactive isotopes,mainly radioactive cesium(cs^(+)),contaminating large areas of soil for very long periods of time(Burger and Lichtscheidl,2018).These contaminated soils contain^(134)cs^(+)and^(137)cs^(+)radioisotopes that are readily accumulated into plants and that,through the food chain,are transferred to animals and humans,causing important health problems(Burger and Lichtscheidl,2018).

An important factor for the sustainability of soils highly susceptible to degradation is the use of monitoring tools that promptly and realistically reflect changes imposed on soil by different cropping systems. To select soil quality indicator variables in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) production areas that fulfill the criteria of sensitivity to management practices and between-season consistency in the management discrimination, ten c.m.osite soil samples (0–10 cm) were collected in july 2005 (rainy season) and again in march 2006 (dry season) from areas under cultivation of organic sugarcane (os), green sugarcane (GS), burned sugarcane (BS) and from an adj.c.nt native forest (NF) area at Usina Triunfo, Boca da mata, Alagoas, Brazil. microbial biomass-c (mBc), total organic c (TOc), soil enzyme activity expressed as the rate of fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolysis, mean weight diameter of water-stable soil aggregates (mWD), and percentage of water-stable macroaggregates (PWSA) were analyzed. Although mBc and TOc were higher in NF than in the cultivated areas, no differences were observed in these c pools between the three sugarcane systems. The response of FDA to the site management was dependent on the sampling time. In the rainy period, the activity followed the order: NF > os > GS > BS, whereas in the dry season, only NF differed from the other treatments. Irrespective of the sampling time, mWD and PWSA decreased in the order NF > os = GS > BS. The variables mWD and PWSA are quite sensitive for discriminating between site management histories regardless the sampling season.

Dialysis plays a crucial role in the purification of nanomaterials but its impact on the structural properties of carbon nanomaterials was never ***,a carbon-based nanomaterial generated electrochemically in potassium phosphate buffer,was characterized before and after dialysis against pure *** is shown that dialysis affects the size of the carbon domains,structural organization,surface functionalization,oxidation degree of carbon,and grade of ***,dialysis drives the nanomaterial organization from discrete roundish carbon domains,with sizes ranging from 70 to 160 nm,towards linear stacking structures of small nanoparticles(m).In parallel,alcohol and ether(epoxide)surface groups evolve into more oxidized carbon groups(e.g.,ketone and ester groups).Investigation of the as-prepared nanomaterial by electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR)revealed a resonance signal consistent with carbon-oxygen centred ***,this study brings to light the selective affinity of the carbon nanomaterial under study to capture Na^(+)ions,a property greatly enhanced by the dialysis process,and its high ability to trap oxygen,particularly before *** findings open new perspectives for the application of carbon-based nanomaterials and raise awareness of the importance of structural changes that can occur during the purification of carbon-based nanomaterials.

A patient with myoclonus- dystonia syndrome was treated by implanting electr odes in the internal segment of the globus pallidus (GPi) and applying deep brai n stimulation. Surgery was done in two sessions. The most affected limb was trea ted first and the other limb one year later. Neuronal recordings showed that mos t pallidal neurones discharged in bursts at a relatively low firing rate (mean ( SD), 46 (18) Hz) compared with cells in the GPi in patients with Parkinson’ s d isease. Neurones modified the rate and mode of discharge with dystonic postures and rapid involuntary contractions of limb muscles. Neurological examination at 24 months after surgery showed a decline of 47.8% and 78.5% in the Burke- F ahn- marsden and disability rating scales, respectively.
