Background:Volcanic eruptions have large effects on forest ecosystems and create new substrates,triggering primary succession processes.The Paricutín volcano,born in central-western Mexico,erupted between 1943 and 1952.After the cessation of the eruptive activity,plant colonization began on the lava flows and tephra deposits,including the conifer species that dominate the surrounding mature forests.This study aims to reconstruct the history of the establishment of conifer trees on the substrates created by the Paricutín eruption.Methods:16 sampling plots were established along three transects with northern,southern,and south-western aspects,located every 250 m from the preserved forest to the volcanic cone.Increment cores from 400 conifer trees were extracted and their age was determined by cross-dating annual tree rings.The order of the species colonization and the tree establishment,abundance,and dominance patterns were characterized.Also,the influence of the distance from the mature forests and the inter-annual climatic conditions on the temporal tree establishment pattern was evaluated.Results:Eight pine and one fir species have been established since 1970,only 18 years after the end of the eruptive period.However,tree establishment increased by 12.9%annually after 1995,with the youngest tree in our sample getting established in 2015.We did not find a well-defined temporal and spatial pattern of species arrival,which suggests that colonization occurred randomly,although the four pine species that were established early became the most abundant and dominant.Tree establishment was not influenced by the distance from the mature forest,and wet inter-annual conditions did not enhance pulses of tree recruitment,exhibiting a continuous tree establishment pattern.Conclusions:Conifer species have shown a great capacity for colonizing volcanic substrates created by the Paricutín eruption,which suggests that tropical montane conifers can regenerate rapidly under high-magnitude disturbances.These findings support the use

Potential Areas for Commercial Timber Plantations of Tabebuia rosea(Bertol.)DC.in Michoacan,Mexico

The targeted area for plant reforestation in the state of Michoacan is made up of eroded areas and pasture induced areas, both adding to 525,260 ha and representing 10.9% of the total surface of the state. The regions with the largest areas in need of reforestation are the Costa with 185,396 ha (29%), Oriente with 106,836 (17%) and Tierra Caliente with 96,284 (15%). Commercial forest plantations are an alternative for reducing the pressure on natural forests and creating options for sustainable and diversified development, changing the land use from fragmented agricultur and livestock purposes to forestry. The object of this study was to determine potential areas for the establishment of commercial forest plantations of Tabebuia rosea (Bertol.) DC. in the state of Michoacan, Mexico, by using geographic information systems. The outlining of potential areas was performed with the IDRIsI 32 and ArcView programs, according to the environmental requirements of T. rosea. These environmental requirements include precipitation, temperature, soil, altitude, land use and slope. The analysis resulted in two maps where the potential areas for the establishment of commercial forest plantations with this species were shown, which turned out a total potential area of 54,320 ha, distributed in 47,566 ha considering a slope of 0% - 15% for non-manual forest plantations, and 6754 ha considering a slope of 15% - 30% for manual forest plantations. The ecologic conditions in Michoacan are favorable for successful establishment and development of commercial forest plantations of T. rosea.

Michoacán has a deforested area of 525,260 ha, representing 52,526 ha per year, mainly caused by anthropogenic disturbances such as agricultural burning and forest fires (50%), change of use of land for extensive livestock farming (28%), agriculture (17%) and illegal logging (5%). The establishment of forest plantations is an alternative for reducing the pressure on natural forests and creating options for sustainable development and diversification of production and conversion of land for agricultural and livestock fragmented for forestry purposes. The aim of this study was to determine the potential areas for commercial forest plantations of Enterolobium cyclocarpum (jacq.) Griseb. in the state of Michoacán, México, through the use of Geographic information systems (GIs). Areas were identified using IDRIsI 32, and ArcView software. screening variables include annual temperature, annual precipitation, land use, soil type, elevation and slope. Products obtained were field verified. Two maps where potential areas for the establishment of commercial forest plantations of E. cyclocarpum shown were obtained. Potential areas for commercial forest plantation establishment are (0% - 15% slope) for commercial forest plantations mechanized was 57,227 ha and (15% - 30% slope) for manual plantations was 6273 ha. The total area in the state with potential for the establishment of the species in the study was 63,500 ha.

Parkinsonism by unilateral,intranigralβ-sitosterolβ-D-glucoside administration in rats is distinguished in that theα-synuclein insult begins unilaterally but spreads bilaterally and increases in severity over time,thus replicating several clinical features of Parkinson’s disease,a typicalα-synucleinopathy.As Nurr1 repressesα-synuclein,we evaluated whether unilateral transfected of rNurr1-V5 transgene via neurotensin-polyplex to the substantia nigra on day 30 after unilateralβ-sitosterolβ-D-glucoside lesion could affect bilateral neuropathology and sensorimotor deficits on day 30 post-transfection.This study found that rNurr1-V5 expression but not that of the green fluorescent protein(the negative control)reducedβ-sitosterolβ-D-glucoside-induced neuropathology.Accordingly,a bilateral increase in tyrosine hydroxylase-positive cells and arborization occurred in the substantia nigra and increased tyrosine hydroxylase-positive ramifications in the striatum.In addition,tyrosine hydroxylase-positive cells displayed less senescence markerβ-galactosidase and more neuron-cytoskeleton markerβIII-tubulin and brain-derived neurotrophic factor.A significant decrease in activated microglia(positive to ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1)and neurotoxic astrocytes(positive to glial fibrillary acidic protein and complement component 3)and increased neurotrophic astrocytes(positive to glial fibrillary acidic protein and s100 calcium-binding protein A10)also occurred in the substantia nigra.These effects followed the bilateral reduction inα-synuclein aggregates in the nigrostriatal system,improving sensorimotor behavior.Our results show that unilateral rNurr1-V5 transgene expression in nigral dopaminergic neurons mitigates bilateral neurodegeneration(senescence and loss of neuron-cytoskeleton and tyrosine hydroxylase-positive cells),neuroinflammation(activated microglia,neurotoxic astrocytes),α-synuclein aggregation,and sensorimotor deficits.Increased neurotrophic astrocytes and brain-derived neurotrophic factor can mediate t

Nitric oxide(NO)is an essential reactive oxygen species and a signal molecule in plants.Although several studies have proposed the occurrence of oxidative NO production,only reductive routes for NO production,such as the nitrate(NO_(3)^(-))-upper-reductase pathway,have been evidenced to date in land plants.However,plants grown axenically with ammonium as the sole source of nitrogen exhibit contents of nitrite and NO3−,evidencing the existence of a metabolic pathway for oxidative production of NO.We hypothesized that oximes,such as indole-3-acetaldoxime(IAOx),a precursor to indole-3-acetic acid,are intermediate oxidation products in NO synthesis.We detected the production of NO from IAOx and other oximes catalyzed by peroxidase(POD)enzyme using both 4-amino-5-methylamino-2′,7′-difluorescein fluorescence and chemiluminescence.Flavins stimulated the reaction,while superoxide dismutase inhibited it.Interestingly,mouse NO synthase can also use IAOx to produce NO at a lower rate than POD.We provided a full mechanism for POD-dependent NO production from IAOx consistent with the experimental data and supported by density functional theory calculations.We showed that the addition of IAOx to extracts from Medicago truncatula increased the in vitro production of NO,while in vivo supplementation of IAOx and other oximes increased the number of lateral roots,as shown for NO donors,and a more than 10-fold increase in IAOx dehydratase expression.Furthermore,we found that in vivo supplementation of IAOx increased NO production in Arabidopsis thaliana wild-type plants,while prx33-34 mutant plants,defective in POD33-34,had reduced production.Our data show that the release of NO by IAOx,as well as its auxinic effect,explain the superroot phenotype.Collectively,our study reveals that plants produce NO utilizing diverse molecules such as oximes,POD,and flavins,which are widely distributed in the plant kingdom,thus introducing a long-awaited oxidative pathway to NO production in plants.This knowledge has essential implications for und

Improvement in Hurst exponent estimation and its application to financial markets

This research aims to improve the efficiency in estimating the Hurst exponent in financial time series.A new procedure is developed based on equality in distribution and is applicable to the estimation methods of the Hurst exponent.We show how to use this new procedure with three of the most popular algorithms(generalized Hurst exponet,total triangles area,and fractal dimension)in the literature.Findings show that this new approach improves the accuracy of the original methods,mainly for longer series.The second contribution of this study is that we show how to use this methodology to test whether the series is self-similar,constructing a confidence interval for the Hurst exponent for which the series satisfies this property.Finally,we present an empirical application of this new procedure to stocks of the s&P500 index.similar to previous contributions,we consider this to be relevant to financial literature,as it helps to avoid inappropriate interpretations of market efficiency that can lead to erroneous decisions not only by market participants but also by policymakers.

Identification and heterologous expression of the globomycin biosynthetic gene cluster

Globomycin is a cyclic lipodepsipeptide originally isolated from several streptomyces species which displays strong and selective antibacterial activity against Gram-negative pathogens.Its mode of action is based on the competitive inhibition of the lipoprotein signal peptidase II(LspA),which is absent in eukaryotes and considered an attractive target for the development of new antibiotics.Despite its interesting biological properties,the gene cluster encoding its biosynthesis has not yet been identified.In this study we employed a genome-mining approach in the globomycin-producing streptomyces sp.CA-278952 to identify a candidate gene cluster responsible for its biosynthesis.A null mutant was constructed using CRIsPR base editing where production was abolished,strongly suggesting its involvement in the biosynthesis.The putative gene cluster was then cloned and heterologously expressed in streptomyces albus j1074 and streptomyces coelicolor M1146,therefore unambigu-ously linking globomycin and its biosynthetic gene cluster.Our work paves the way for the biosynthesis of new globomycin derivatives with improved pharmacological properties.

Natural sediment at a dam and its inorganic materials as adsorbents of praseodymium(Pr(Ⅲ))

The sediment deposited behind a dam(Ds) and its inorganic materials(IM-Ds) were characterized and used for the removal of praseodymium(Pr) from aqueous solutions. Quartz, albite, and kaolinite were found in the sediment by X-ray diffraction. Kinetic data fit well to a pseudo second-order model, the equilibrium time for Ds and IM-Ds was 2 h and 3 min, respectively, and the adsorption capacity was higher for Pr/Ds(qe= 4.91 mg/g) than for Pr/IM-Ds(qe= 3.01 mg/g) in these conditions. Pr/Ds and Pr/IM-Ds data isotherms were in agreement with the Langmuir-Freundlich model and the maximum adsorption capacities were 4.95 and 4.01 mg/g, respectively. Both processes are exothermic(enthalpy change, ΔH0=-22.8 and-21.8 k j/mol for Ds and IM-Ds, respectively), the increase of the randomness is small, and the feasibility and spontaneity are low. Praseodymium was desorbed by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium(EDTA-Na2), sodium chloride, nitric, citric, and humic acids solutions, and one hundred percent of praseodymium was desorbed by the EDTA-Na2solution. The Pr2(EDTA)3(praseodymium ethylenediaminetetraacetate) complex was completely desorbed from both materials(Ds and IM-Ds). Distribution coefficients(KD) depend upon praseodymium concentration,temperature, p H, and the kind of adsorbent. Chemical reactions of praseodymium with kaolinite and iron minerals could explain the adsorption.

CD74 is a protein whose initial role in antigen presentation was recognized two decades ago. Recent studies have revealed that it has additional functions as a receptor for macrophage migration inhibitory factor and as a receptor for an important human pathogen, Helicobacter pylori (H pylori). The role of CD74 as a receptor is important because after binding of migration inhibitory factor or H pylori, NF-κB and Erk1/2 activation occurs, along with the induction of proinflammatory cytokine secretion. This review provides an up-to-date account of the functions of CD74 and how it might be involved in inflammation and cancer within the gastrointestinal tract.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider,as standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced background.This paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAs Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAs experiment.Two taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet pseudorapidity.Differences in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.
