Diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of gastrointestinal angiodysplasias: A critical review and view points

Gastrointestinal angiodysplasias (GIADs), also called angioectasias, are the most frequent vascular lesions. Its precise prevalence is unknown since most of them are asymptomatic. However, the incidence may be increasing since GIADs affect individuals aged more than 60 years and population life expectancy is globally increasing worldwide. They are responsible of about 5% to 10% of all gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) cases. Most GIADs are placed in small bowel, where are the cause of 50 to 60% of obscure GIB diagnosed with video capsule endoscopy. They may be the cause of fatal severe bleeding episodes;nevertheless, recurrent overt or occult bleeding episodes requiring repeated expensive treatments and disturbing patient’s quality-of-life are more frequently observed. Diagnosis and treatment of GIADs (particularly those placed in small bowel) are a great challenge due to insidious disease behavior, inaccessibility to affected sites and limitations of available diagnostic procedures. Hemorrhagic causality out of the actively bleeding lesions detected by diagnostic procedures may be difficult to establish. No treatment guidelines are currently available, so there is a high variability in the management of these patients. In this review, the epidemiology and pathophysiology of GIADs and the status in the diagnosis and treatment, with special emphasis on small bowel angiodysplasias based on multiple publications, are critically discussed. In addition, a classification of GIADs based on their endoscopic characteristics is proposed. Finally, some aspects that need to be clarified in future research studies are highlighted.

Impact of Land Degradation on Soil Microbial Biomass and Activity in Northeast Brazil

Si-SiO_2 interface passivation by plasma NH_3 and atomic H

Plasma ammonia treatment at 400 ℃ leads to de-passivation of a fully hydrogenated Si-SiO2 interface, and to passivation of a fully de-hydrogenated Si-SiO2 interface. Plasma NH3 exposure causes irreversible Si surface damage and degradation of thermal stability. Atomic hydrogen exposure, although it results in similar effects on the Si-SiO2 interface, does not introduce additional defects or a decrease of the Si surface thermal stability. The difference between plasma NH3 exposure and atomic H exposure is speculated to be due to either the nitridation of Si-SiO2 interface or radiation damage resulting from plasma NH3 exposure. EPr measurements indicate changes of the paramagnetic defect properties and an increase in the paramagnetic defect density generated by plasma NH3 exposure.

Coastal tidal wetlands produce and accumulate significant amounts of organic carbon(C) that help to mitigate climate change. However, previous data limitations have prevented a robust evaluation of the global rates and mechanisms driving C accumulation. Here, we go beyond recent soil C stock estimates to reveal global tidal wetland C accumulation and predict changes under relative sea level rise, temperature and precipitation. We use data from literature study sites and our new observations spanning wide latitudinal gradients and 20 countries. Globally, tidal wetlands accumulate 53.65(95%CI: 48.52–59.01)Tg C yr-1, which is ～30% of the organic C buried on the ocean floor. Modeling based on current climatic drivers and under projected emissions scenarios revealed a net increase in the global C accumulation by2100. This rapid increase is driven by sea level rise in tidal marshes, and higher temperature and precipitation in mangroves. Countries with large areas of coastal wetlands, like Indonesia and Mexico, are more susceptible to tidal wetland C losses under climate change, while regions such as Australia, Brazil, the USA and China will experience a significant C accumulation increase under all projected scenarios.

Graduate students who are beginning academic research want to learn how to create and verify new knowledge in their research. Their supervisors, on the other hand, are seeking appropriate research environments including effective research guidance methods. In order to meet these demands, this paper proposes a knowledge creation model that supports the objectives of both graduate students and their supervisors. This is an academic knowledge creation model for individuals supported by a group and its origin can be traced back to a famous organizational knowledge creation model. Since this type of model is constructed from empirical knowledge, it is not easy to prove its objective significance. But, this paper tries to show the effectiveness of the proposed model as an initial stage of model validation based on a questionnaire survey of students in a graduate school in China.

The homogeneous plastic flow of fully amorphous and partially crystallized Zr(41.2)Ti(13.8)Cu(12.5)Ni(10)Be(22.5) bulk metallic glass (Vitl) has been investigated by compression tests at high temperatures in supercooled liquid region. Experimental results show that at sufficiently low strain rates, the supercooled liquid of the fully amorphous alloy reveals Newtonian flow with a linear relationship between the flow stress and strain rate. As the strain rate is increased, a transition from linear Newtonian to nonlinear flow is detected, which can be explained by the transition state theory. Over the entire strain rate interval investigated, however, only nonlinear flow is present in the partially crystallized alloy, and the flow stress for each strain rate is much higher. It is found that the strain rate-stress relationship for the partially crystaltized alloy at the given temperature of 646 K also obeys the sinh law derived from the transition state theory, similar to that of the initial homogeneous amorphous alloy. Thus, it is proposed that the flow behavior of the nanocrystalline/amorphous composite at 646 K is mainly controlled by the viscous flow of the remaining supercooled liquid.

A systematic approach was developed to investigate the stability of gentamicin sulfate(GS) and GS/poly(lacticco-glycolic acid)(PLGA) coatings on hydroxyapatite *** influence of environmental factors(light,humidity,oxidation and heat) upon degradation of the drug in the coatings was investigated using liquid chromatography with evaporative light scattering detection and mass *** coated rods were found to be stable across the range of environments assessed,with only an oxidizing atmosphere resulting in significant changes to the gentamicin *** contrast,rods coated with GS/PLGA were more sensitive to storage conditions with compositional changes being detected after storage at 60 °C,75% relative humidity or exposure to *** effect of γ-irradiation on the coated rods was also investigated and found to have no significant ***,liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis revealed that known gentamines C_1,C_1 aand C_2were the major degradants *** degradation of gentamicin coatings did not produce any unexpected degradants or impurities.

Much of the western United States is considered to be rangeland. rangeland areas produce a diverse mix of benefits and products, and their overall health, in an ecosystem context, is of national *** sediment yield from a watershed is an integrated expression of all soil erosion and sedimentation processes occurring within it, it is logical that we seek to quantify and interpret sediment yield in the context of soil/site stability and watershed function as measures of rangeland health. Depth integrated suspended sediment samples were combined with runoff measured using flumes to calculate sediment discharge and yield from two experimental watersheds in the southwestern USA. Sediment yield estimates for individual runoff events were summed to produce estimates of annual sediment yield from these two rangeland watersheds. Estimated annual sediment yield data were then combined with the concepts of sediment delivery ratio and soil loss tolerance to assess soil/site stability at the watershed scale. Analyses suggest that using sediment yield estimates from distributed watershed processes with time-space averaged soil loss tolerance values is inconsistent. Thus, new distributed soil/site stability criteria are needed to replace the soil loss tolerance concept in assessing the health of rangeland watersheds. Sediment transport/yield models are used at interior points in a watershed to simulate distributed sedimentation processes. However, application of these models requires calibration and validation data and is thus dependent upon the availability of sediment concentration and yield databases. Therefore, additional efforts are required to build sediment yield databases through rescue of historical data along with continued measurement and monitoring at existing and new sampling sites.
