The bone marrow contains a heterogeneous milieu of cells, including macrophages, which are key cellular mediators for resolving infection and inflammation. Macrophages are most well known for their ability to phagocytose foreign bodies or apoptotic cells to maintain homeostasis; however, little is known about their function in the bone microenvironment. In the current study, we investigated the in vitro interaction of murine macrophages and bone marrow stromal cells （BMSCs）, with focus on the juxtacrine induction of IL-6 signaling and the resultant effect on BMSC migration and growth. The juxtacrine interaction of primary mouse macrophages and BMSCs activated IL-6 signaling in the co-cultures, which subsequently enhanced BMSC migration and increased BMSC numbers. BMSCs and macrophages harvested from IL-6 knockout mice revealed that IL-6 signaling was essential for enhancement of BMSC migration and increased BMSC numbers via juxtacrine interactions. BMSCs were the main contributor of IL-6 signaling~ and hence activation of the IL-6/ gp130/STAT3 pathway. Meanwhile, macrophage derived IL-6 remained important for the overall production of IL-6 protein in the co-cultures. Taken together, these findings show the function of macmphages as co-inducers of migration and growth of BMSCs, which could directly influence bone formation and turnover.

Recent studies on natural killer(NK)cells have challenged the dogma that immunological memory is a phenomenon restricted to the adaptive immune *** interactions between the NK cell receptor Ly49H and the murine cytomegalovirus virus(MCMV)-encoded glycoprotein m157 result in selective expansion of the Ly49H+NK cell subpopulation and the establishment of a long-lived memory-like population.1–3 Further,memory NK cells show augmented IFNγresponses,and transfer of the memory population into naive mice confers enhanced protection against infection-induced mortality.1 These observations along with cytotoxicity and cytokine secretion functions that overlap with CD8 T cells have led to the description of NK cells as a bridge between the innate and adaptive immune systems.

Based on the performance results of the previously suggested smart building isolation systems （lst companion paper）, this following study verifies the control effects of the systems from the view point of energy dissipation and damage level metrics. Several different model cases of the strategically isolated multi-story building structures utilizing passive dampers and semi-active resettable devices are analyzed and the energy-based target indices are compared. Performance comparisons are conducted on statistically calculated story/structural hysteretic energy and story/structural damage demands over realistic suites of earthquake ground motion records, representing seismic excitations of specific return period probability. Again, the semi-active solutions show significant promise for applications ofresettable device, offering advantages over passive systems in the consistent damage reductions. The specific results of this study include the identification of differences in the mechanisms by which smart building isolation systems remove energy, based on the differences in the devices used. Less variability is also seen for the semi-active isolation systems, indicating an increased robustness.

We report on pyramiding different disease resistance genes against fungal pathogens in Canadian winter wheat germplasm based on available DNA markers and gene *** resistance represents a safe, economical and ecological method for protecting plants, growers and the health of consumers. Major diseases of wheat on the Canadian Prairies are common bunt, rusts(leaf, stem and stripe) and Fusarium head blight. Over the years markers for resistance genes against these diseases have been identified and used by the international wheat community. We describe markers that we have used to pyramid different resistance genes and indicate their presence in Canadian winter wheat cultivars issued from the winter wheat breeding program at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada,Lethbridge Research and Development Centre, the only winter wheat breeding program in Western Canada actively delivering new varieties for all regions of the Canadian *** sources of resistance and identities of PCR primers and amplification conditions are indicated to enable the transfer and pyramiding of different resistance(R) genes to breeding lines. We conclude by reviewing new tools for identifying R genes in wheat and indicate how mutagenesis and gene editing can help future efforts to extend the protection offered by known R genes.

Since first isolation in 1947 from the Zika forest in Uganda, Zika virus(ZIKV) has been principally known as a benign agent associated with sporadic human infections in a restricted number of African countries. However, during 2015–2016,an Asian lineage of ZIKV caused an unprecedentedly large outbreak in the Americas and sizeable numbers of exported cases across the globe. In this review, we critically appraise the recent advances in molecular epidemiological studies of ZIKV performed to date, and we highlight the pivotal role played by genomic surveillance in elucidating the origins,dissemination and evolution of the Asian lineage of ZIKV in Asia and in the Americas.

The topics on toilets, defecation and perianal cleansing may be perceived as taboo subjects in daily discussions but are markedly important from health and hygienical perspectives. In multicultural countries like Australia, no research attention has been given to domestic toilet hygienical requirements from the perspective of the society＇s cultural traditions or religious teachings. The Western sitting lavatories with toilet paper facilities are the most common toilet systems available in Australian homes, which may be contradictory to persons coming from non- Western backgrounds. Squat latrines used widely in many Asian countries are acknowledged to be more conducive for maintaining a healthy bowel system, but are unattractive to Westerners and also unsuitable for those with physical disabilities. Similarly, water is regarded as the most hygienica[ option for perianal cleansing in many cultures but is rarely used in Western cultures. This paper investigates the experiences of seven Muslim families living in Brisbane with respect to whether or not the Australian toilet systems in their homes meet their personal and familial requirements. This paper further explores whether modifications were made to their domestic toilets to meet these essential needs. Some design recommendations are presented, which are based on the extant literature on this topic as well as the findings from this study. These design options provide an opportunity for future research focussed on a universal toilet design solution that is adaptable and able to meet the needs of all users, especially for those countries with a multicultural PoPulation.

EBSD characterization of density and dispersion of high angle boundaries was carried out in niobium microalloyed steels of HTP base chemistry with 0.09 wt % Nb,which were thermo-mechanically processed under laboratory *** studies were carried out in higher grade (X-100 and above) line pipe steels with different chemistries,which were processed under simulation of industrial rolling *** twin objectives are (i) to understand the effect of chemistry and processing parameters on the density and dispersion of high angle boundaries,and (ii) to correlate the microstructure and density of high angle boundaries with strength and fracture *** present studies confirm that refinement of austenite grain size prior to pancaking,large strain accumulation in austenite conditioning,alloy design with high hardenability and high cooling rates are essential to control high density and uniformity of dispersion of high angle boundaries in the final microstructure in order to achieve high strength,toughness,low DBTT and consistently 100% ductile shear in DWTT in thermo-mechanically rolled higher grade line pipe steels.

INTRODUCTION Humans and plants depend on an adequate supply of clean water for numerous reasons,from food production to sustaining terrestrial and aquatic *** average Virginia resident uses about 47 gallons(178 L)of fresh water daily(VDEQ 2008).While a majority of Virginians are provided water from a centralized,public utility,there are nearly two million Virginia residents who depend on well water as their main source(VDH 2008).Replenishing groundwater withdrawals depends on recharge(water moving from the surface to groundwater)from infiltration of precipitation through permeable surfaces in the environment;an important part of the hydrologic,or water,cycle(VDEQ 2010).Forests and grasslands provide much of the available recharge area due to their high capacities to infiltrate ***,the urbanization process is rapidly converting forested areas and grasslands to commercial,residential,or industrial *** conversion creates a significant increase in impervious surfaces such as concrete,asphalt,building roofs,and even compacted vegetated sites(*** 2003).Impervious surfaces decrease infiltration and groundwater *** also generate increases in stormwater runoff;defined as any precipitation from a rain or snow event that flows off of an impervious *** water runs off urban impervious surfaces,it picks up sediment,oils,debris,nutrients,chemicals,and *** runoff is then collected in a conveyance system,transported,and discharged to surface waters such as creeks and rivers;most of the time without any type of water quality treatment(*** 2003;Paul and Meyer 2001).In addition to carrying pollutants,the runoff is also typically warmer than the receiving surface *** increased volume and velocity of the stormwater runoff erodes soil and stream channels and can lead to stream“blow out.”Water quality is degraded and aquatic habitats are adversely altered(Meyer,et al.2005,Booth and jackson 1997).Due to the interc
