Particle deposition during crossflow filtration is significantly influenced by the operating conditions,in particular the permeate flux and crossflow ***,there is a lack of detailed knowledge about how deposit layer structures and distributions depend on operating *** study uses a microfluidic visualisation filtration system to examine the influence of operating conditions on the deposition process during crossflow ultrafiltration from a microscopic *** the permeate flux caused an increasing amount of deposition and a thicker deposit *** crossflow velocities reduced the extent of *** degree of deposition varied over a range of operating conditions due to the altered hydrodynamic forces exerted on the particles,which can be examined by the deposition probability according to an existing *** on this,an empirical correlation between the deposition probability and volume of deposition as a function of filtration time was developed,which gave good agreement with experimental *** effect of solution conditions was also involved in this correlation as a interaction *** could be useful for predicting the dynamic deposition process during crossflow filtration over a range of operating and solution conditions.

Most existing models for predicting bubble size and bubble frequency have been developed for freely bubbling fluidized *** prediction of bubbling behavior in deep fluidized beds,however,has been a challenge due to the higher degree of bubble coalescence and break up,high probability of the slugging regime,partial fluidization,and chaotic behavior in the bubbling *** this work,the bubbling and fluidization behavior of potash particles was investigated in a deep fluidized bed employing a twin-plane electrical capacitance tomography(ECT)*** volume fraction,average bubble velocity,average bubble diameter,and bubble frequency in both bubbling and slugging regimes were measured at two different bed height ratios(H/D=3.5 and H/D=3.78).This work is the first to illustrate a sequential view of bubbles at different superficial gas velocities in a fluidized *** results show that both the bubble diameter and rising velocity increased with increasing the superficial gas velocity for the two bed heights,with larger values observed in the deeper bed compared to the shallower *** values for bubble diameter,bubble rise velocity and bubble frequency from different models are compared with the experimental data obtained from the ECT system in this *** agreement has been achieved between the values predicted by the previous models and the experimental data for the bubble diameter and bubble rise velocity with an average absolute deviation of 16%and 15%for the bed height of 49 cm and 13%and 8%for the bed height of 53 cm,respectively.

The solubility, induction period and nucleation parameters of pure and amino acids like L-arginine, L-lysine and L-alanine doped potassium dihydrogen phosphate (kDP) crystals have been determined. Solubility study of pure and amino acids doped kDP crystals were carried out for different temperatures. The induction period was measured at different supersaturation level. The nucleation parameters like interfacial tension, radius of critical nucleus and energy of formation were calculated based on the classical theory of nucleation. Values of different parameters were found to be larger for amino acid doped crystals than pure kDP crystal.

We present the case of an adolescent who presented with rhabdomyolysis due to severe hypokalemia arising from chronic diarrhea. Initial evaluation for celiac disease, known to present in this manner, was negative. Further evaluation with colonoscopy showed a normal appearing colon but biopsies showed a significant number of apoptotic cells in the mucosal crypts supporting a diagnosis of apoptotic colitis. Investigation into the cause of apoptotic colitis resulted in a diagnosis of common variable immune deficiency due to a defect in the inducible T-cell costimulator (ICOS) gene. Physicians should be aware of this uncommon condition and the importance of mucosal biopsy despite the presence of normal appearing mucosa.

Temporally weighted regression models with a spatial autoregressive component may estimate nonlinearities in spatiotemporal-sampled data of Culex quinquefasciatus, a major vector of West Nile Virus (WNV) which can help implement control strategies by determining optimal predictors associated to prolific habitats. The design of this kind of mixed model can specifically incorporate spatial autocorrelation whilst including the influence of other aspatial predictor variables. Currently, the lack of an estimation theory that allows for het- eroscedasticity and corresponding joint hypothesis testing in the presence of spatial dependence in georefer- enced Cx. quinquefasciatus habitat data is a serious shortcoming in WNV research. In this paper we used spatially lagged and simultaneous autoregressive models based on multiple predictor variables of immature Cx. quinquefasciatus and Worldview 1 (WV-1) data to help implant a remote habitat-based surveillance sys- tem in Trinidad. Initially, we used Geomatica Ortho Engine? v. 10.2 for extracting a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) from the WV-1 raw imagery. Results of the DEM analyses indicated a statistically significant inverse linear relationship between total sampled Cx. quinquefasciatus data and elevation (m) (R2 = -0.439;p kov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) specifications. jadomycin is an antibiotic that has shown activities against bacteria, yeasts and fungi as well as cytotoxic properties to cancer cells. Because of the wide range of its inhibitory actions, jadomycin shows promise as a novel antibiotic and cancer treatment drug. Streptomyces venezuelae are aerobic bacteria that produce jadomycin and the size of bacterial population can significantly affect the yield of jadomycin. Therefore, the bacterial population must be accurately measured in order to standardize the reproducibility of jadomycin production process. In this study, a dehydrogenase activity measurement test, using triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC), was used to measure the dehydrogenase activity of Streptomyces venezuelae during growth in maltose-yeast extract-malt extract (MYM) broth. The aims were to evaluate the effectiveness of the test for measuring microbial growth and to study the effects of the test conditions (incubation time, incubation temperature and medium pH) on triphenyl formazan (TF) yield. The results showed that the TF yield was highly correlated to the optical density. The highest TF yield was observed at a pH of 6 at all incubation times and temperature. Lower TF yields were obtained at higher temperature (40 and 50oC) compared to those obtained at lower temperatures (22 and 30oC). The difference between the yields obtained at 22oC and 30oC were not significant. The differences between incubation time were also not significant. The recommended test conditions are an incubation time of 1 hour at a temperature of 30oC and a pH of 6 followed by three extractions using methanol.

16S rDNA PCR and sequencing are powerful tools for bacterial detection and identification, although their routine use is not currently widespread in the field of clinical microbiology. The availability of pyrosequencing now makes 16S rDNA assays more accessible to routine diagnostic laboratories, but this approach has had limited evaluation in general diagnostic practice. In this study we evaluated a real-time 16S rDNA PCR and pyrosequencing assay for use in a routine microbiology laboratory, by retrospectively testing joint fluid and joint tissue specimens received for conventional culture. We found that use of the real-time 16S rDNA assay was clinically valuable in this specimen type because it enabled us to identify a small number of culture-negative infections. Although faster and less labour-intensive, we found that the utility of pyrosequencing for pathogen identification is still hampered by shorter read lengths compared to conventional (Sanger) sequencing. Combining results from both molecular and conventional culture methods, bacteria were only detected in 11.8% specimens in this study. However, the detection rate was increased to 18.6% if specimens were only included from patients with a documented clinical suspicion of infection. In conclusion, while pyrosequencing had significant advantages in speed and ease-of-use over conventional sequencing, multiple reactions will be required to deliver comparable species-level identification, thus negating many of the benefits of using the technique. We found that 16S rDNA PCR and sequencing should be rationally targeted on the basis of good clinical information in the routine diagnostic setting, and not used as a general screening test for the exclusion of bacterial infection in joint specimens.
