it is well-known that the local heating/cooling rate im.licitly drives the quality and stability of the projection associated with an inverse heat conduction analysis. However, contem.orary studies involving inverse heat conduction for heat treatm.nt processes and defense related applications norm.lly use either tem.erature or strain data. An illustration is presented indicating the m.rit of using a device capable of either m.asuring or deducing the heating/cooling rate. Arm.d with this knowledge certainly suggests that the direct m.asurem.nt or deduction of the heating/cooling rate can provide a m.ans for developing an alternative and potentially m.re accurate projection than based on tem.erature data. A brief theoretical description is offered illustrating that a first-order therm.couple com.ensation m.del used in conjunction with an inverse analysis produces a representative prediction of the heating/cooling rate. The presented analysis also offers additional insight into the choice of optim.l tim.-series truncation used by quasi-analytic m.thods. Using the com.ensation m.del, the heating/cooling rate of the desired surface is obtained using the "best" interpretation of the collected therm.couple data. A m.them.tical form.lism.is developed and som. representative results are presented. Finally, a new m.them.tical discovery that allows for the tim.-local tem.erature errors to be estim.ted with a high degree of accuracy is briefly elucidated.
