We present a method to f.bricate handcraf.ed thermoelectric devices on standard of.ice paper *** devices are based on thin f.lms of.WS_(2),Te,and BP(P-type semiconductors)and TiS_(3)and TiS_(2)(N-type semiconductors),deposited by simply rubbing powder of.these materials against *** thermoelectric properties of.these semiconducting f.lms revealed maximum Seebeck coef.icients of.+1.32±0.27)mV K^(-1)and(-0.82±0.15)mV K^(-1)f.r WS_(2)and TiS_(3),***,Peltier elements were f.bricated by interconnecting the P-and N-type f.lms with graphite electrodes.A thermopower value up to 6.11 mV K^(-1)was obtained when the Peltier element were constructed with three *** f.ndings of.this work show proof.of.concept devices to illustrate the potential application of.semiconducting van der Waals materials in f.ture thermoelectric power generation as well as temperature sensing f.r low-cost disposable electronic devices.

‘Compound casting’simplif.es j.ining processes by directly casting a metallic melt onto a solid metal substrate. A continuously metallurgic transition is very important f.r industrial applications, such as j.int structures of.spacef.ame constructions in transport industry. In this proj.ct, ‘compound casting’ of.light metals is investigated, aiming at weight-saving. The substrate used is a wrought aluminium alloy of.type AA5xxx, containing magnesium as main alloying element. The melts are aluminium alloys, containing various alloying elements (Cu, Si, Zn), and magnesium. By replacing the natural oxygen layer with a zinc layer, the inherent wetting dif.iculties were avoided, and compounds with f.awless interf.ces were successf.lly produced (no contraction def.cts, cracks or oxides). Electron microscopy and EDX investigations as well as optical micrographs of.the interf.cial areas revealed their continu- ously metallic constitution. Dif.usion of.alloying elements leads to heat-treatable microstructures in the vicinity of.the j.ining interf.ces in Al-Al couples. This permits signif.cant variability of.mechanical properties. Without signif.cantly cutting down on wettability, the f.rmation of.low-melting intermetallic phases (Al3Mg2 and Al12Mg17 IMPs) at the interf.ce of.Al-Mg couples was avoided by applying a protective coating to the substrate.

Are hydrides under high-pressure-high-temperature superconductors?

Contrary to the current consensus, I argue that the existing evidence f.r high-temperature superconductivity in hydrides under high pressure is not compelling. I suggest that the f.cus of.the f.eld should urgently shif. to establish unequivocally experimentally whether or not superconductivity in pressurized hydrides exists, instead of.continuing to search f.r new materials that might show elusive signals of.unproven superconductivity at ever higher temperatures. The implications of.a negative f.nding f.r the theoretical understanding of.superconductivity are discussed.

The accessory reproductive glands of.male mammals contribute the bulk of.the secretions in which spermatozoa are transported to the f.male tract during copulation. Despite their morphological diversity, and the chemical complexity of.their products, little is known about the possible ef.ects of.sexual selection upon these glands in mammals. Here we consider the seminal vesicles and prostate glands in a sample of.89 species and 60 genera representing 8 Orders of.mammals. The sizes of.the accessory glands are analysed in relation to body weight and testes weight. Both the seminal vesicles size and prostate size （corrected f.r body weight） correlate positively with relative testes size in this sample; this f.nding remains highly signif.cant af.er application of.procedures to correct f.r possible phylogenetic biases in the data set. The accessory reproductive glands are also signif.cantly larger in those mammals which have large relative testes sizes, and in which the likelihood of.sperm competition is greatest. These results support the hypothesis that sexual selection has played an important role in the evolution of.the mammalian prostate gland and seminal vesicles.

Organic agricultural systems rely on organic amendments to achieve crop f.rtility requirements, and weed control must be achieved without synthetic herbicides. Our obj.ctive was to determine the crop yield and soil quality as af.ected by a transition f.om grass to dryland organic agriculture in the Central Great Plains of.North America. This study evaluated three beef.f.edlot compost(Bf.)treatments in 2010–2015 f.llowing biennial application rates: 0(control), 22.9, and 108.7 t ha^(-1) on two dryland organic cropping systems: a wheat(Triticum aestivum)-f.llow(Wf. rotation harvested f.r grain and a triticale(Triticosecale)/pea(Pisum sativum)-f.llow(T/P-f. rotation harvested f.r f.rage. The triticale + pea biomass responded positively to the 108.7-t ha^(-1) Bf. treatment,but not the 22.9-t ha^(-1) Bf. treatment. The wheat biomass was not af.ected by Bf. addition, but biomass N content *** f.edlot compost input did not increase wheat grain yields, but had a positive ef.ect on wheat grain Zn content. Soil total C and N contents increased with the rate of.108.7 t ha^(-1) Bf. af.er three applications, but not with 22.9 t ha^(-1) Bf.. Soil enzyme activities associated with N and C cycling responded positively to the 108.7-t ha^(-1) Bf. treatment. Saturated salts were high in the soil receiving 108.7 t ha^(-1) of.Bf., but did not af.ect crop yields. These results showed that Bf. was ef.ective in enhancing f.rage yields, wheat grain quality, and soil C and N, as well as specif.c microbial enzymes important f.r nutrient cycling. However, the large rates of.Bf. necessary to elicit these positive responses did not increase grain yields, and resulted in an excessive buildup of.soil P.

One-neutron stripping process between^(6)Li and^(209)Bi was studied at 28,30,and 34 MeV using the in-beamγ-ray spectroscopy ***γ-γcoincident analysis clearly identif.ed twoγ-rays f.eding the ground and long-lived isomeric states,which were employed to determine the cross *** one-neutron stripping cross sections were similar to the cross sections of.complete f.sion in the^(6)Li+^(209)Bi system,but the one-neutron stripping cross sections decreased more gradually at the sub-barrier region.A coupled-reaction-channel calculation was perf.rmed to study the detailed reaction mechanism of.the one-neutron stripping process in^(6)*** calculations indicated that the f.rst excited state of.5 Li is critical in the actual one-neutron transf.r mechanism,and the valence proton of.209Bi can be excited to the low-lying excited state in(^(6)Li,^(5)Li)reaction,unlike in the(d,p)reaction.

In this paper,we analyzed the physical characteristics of.the ternary alloys RE_(2)Rh_(3)Ge(RE=Pr and Sm)using the f.rst principles calculation based on f.nctional density theory integrated in the Wien2k *** calculated f.rmation energies of.Pr_(2)Rh_(3)Ge and Sm_(2)Rh_(3)Ge are−5.3827 and−5.2782 eV/atom,respectively,showing that these alloys may exist *** results of.the band structure and density of.states indicate that all of.the compounds tested are magnetic metals,and their magnetism is mostly related to the contribution of.Pr and Sm *** total magnetic moments of.Pr_(2)Rh_(3)Ge and Sm_(2)Rh_(3)Ge are 4.07245 and 11.16161μB/f.u,*** parameters such as heat capacity at constant pressure,entropy,Debye temperature,lattice volume,compressibility coef.icients,and Grüneisen parameter alloys were calculated using the Gibbs algorithm and studied in depth over a large temperature range of.0-900 *** Debye temperature increases with increasing pressure and decreases with decreasing ***,the Debye temperatures calculated at p=0 GPa and T=300 K are equal to be 342 and 322 K f.r Pr_(2)Rh_(3)Ge and Sm_(2)Rh_(3)Ge,*** optical characteristics such as the real and imaginary portions of.the dielectric f.nction,the absorption coef.icient,the energy-loss f.nction,and the ref.active index were investigated and discussed in more depth.

Coral-like structures of.the Y_(3-x)Pr_(x)f._(5-y)Yb_(y)O_(12),(0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.04, 0.00 ≤ y ≤ 0.02) compound were synthesized using the sol-gel method. Structural investigation certif.ed the YIG cubic crystal structure f.rmation, without any secondary phase. It is shown that, the relatively large ionic radius of.the dopant cations results in an expansion of.the lattice parameter, variations in the Iona-O-Iondangle, Iona-O,Iond-O and Ionc-O bond distances and decrease in the average crystallite size. f.urier transf.rm inf.ared(f.IR) and Raman measurements are essential to testif. the single-phase f.rmation of.YIG crystal structure and are observed changes in the stretching and vibrational modes, respectively. The morphological study, energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) spectra and textural properties show corallike structures, peaks associated with Pr^(3+) and Yb^(3+) atoms and the ef.ect of.dopants on surf.ce area,diameter, and pore volume, respectively. The optical analysis f.om dif.use ref.ectance spectra witnessed an increase in the optical gap band, a decrease in Urbach energy and blue shif. in the charge transf.r,correlated with the expansion of.the unit cell due to the dopant's insertion in the YIG structure. A typical f.rrimagnetic behavior is exhibited by the Y_(3-x)Pr_(x)f._(5-y)Yb_(y)O_(12)compound. The saturation magnetization(M_(s)), cubic anisotropy constant(K_(1)) and coercive f.eld(H_(c)) increase with the Pr^(3+)cations content, as consequence of.their magnetic nature and distribution around of.f.^(3+)ions due to the coexistence with the Yb^(3+). f.nally, f.r the f.rst time, antibacterial tests by mean of.the direct contact method were perf.rmed f.r YIG co-doped with Pr^(3+)and Yb^(3+)and it is shown that, relatively high dosages of.Pr^(3+) cations f.vored the activity against S. aureus, theref.re, a new biological property f.r YIG doped with rare earths is presented.
