CONTROLliNG SMALLPOX UNDER CHINESE RURAL CONDITIONS

Apparently, smallpox was not found in China in ancient times. The disease seems to have been introduced from Western Asia, possibly not far from the Caspian Sea. A passage from the Ancient history records shows that in the 25th year of the reign of Chien Wu (A.D. 49), while at war with the barbarians, a large proportion of the soldiers succumbed to an epidemic disease, which was thought to be smallpox. The first authentic description of the disease, however, appeared later in the "Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies" 肘後備急方(A.D. 265-313). ＜正＞ It is well known that rare-gas atoms interact weakly with various surfaces since they have simple and stable electronic structures. Therefore, interactions among adsorbed rare-gas atoms have been widely studied to understand the characteristics of ideal gas systems, using the techniques including inelastic He scattering, high-resolution He diffraction and thermal ***, scanning tunneling microscopy （STM） studies have revealed intriguing characteristics of interactions between rare-gas atoms and substrate metal surfaces.

＜正＞Hot electrons and x-ray photons emitted by water plasmas produced by single and multiple laser pulses are investigated. For the same pulse energy of 5 mj.in our experiments, the multipulse mode greatly enhances the generation of hot electrons. The hot-electron temperature is about 64 keV, and electrons with energies higher than 25 keV are emitted in two directions symmetrically at 46?from the direction of the laser electric field and in the polarization plane. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations reproduce well the experimental results and indicate that the acceleration mechanism of hot electrons is mainly due to the resonance absorption at the edge of the spherical droplets formed by leading pulses.

Over the past years, hard coatings deposited by physical vapor deposition techniques have been developed from monolayer coatings to multi-component or multilayered coatings for improving performance in the field of cutting tools and molds. Compared with single layer coatings, multilayered coating demonstrate obvious enhancement of mechanical and tribological properties, which is difficult to obtain with the single coating.

Analysis of delivery and recalculation of dose using DICOM treatment records

Obj.ctive:A procedure has been proposed for patient-specific QA that,instead of comparing a measurement to the planned dose,compares the dose calculated by an independent system to the dose calculated by the planning *** is still prudent,however,to check the accuracy of the beam *** this purpose,the DICOM records from the first treatment fraction can be compared to the planned treatment using an in-house developed planning ***:Totally 1,398 patient portals were subj.cted to the new QA *** dose distribution for each portal was first recalculated on a water phantom by two treatment planning systems and the dose distributions were *** agreement was observed,the patient was allowed to start treatment without a *** record from the first day was imported into an in-house planning system which was used to evaluate the delivery for errors and calculate the delivered dose distribution and compare it to the planned dose ***:A total of 266 portals passed a strict comparison between the clinical and QA dose calculations and directly used for treatment without *** those portals,the comparison of the delivery records to the plan showed that 99%of spot positions deviated less than 0.2 mm and 99.7%of spot metersets deviated by less than 0.3%.On the other hand,64 portals showed spot size deviations greater than the tolerance of15%with some as large as25%.For 32 portals in which the record was used to calculate the delivered dose distribution,the Gamma passing rates between the planned and delivered distributions were always above 95%using a 2%dose difference and 2 mm distance-to-agreement ***:The new QA process has been implemented slowly with strict *** amount of beam time required has been reduced while maintaining safety.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering （SERS） is a nanostructure-based vibrational spectroscopy with extremely high detection sensitivity up to single molecule level. However, it is in principle difficult if not impossible to directly use SERS to study atomically flat single-crystal surfaces that cannot effectively support the strong surface plasmon resonance （SPR）. As a consequence, SERS has not been well adopted by the surface science community. Recently, its application to atomically-flat single crystal surfaces has been realized to a large extent by devising and utilizing two types of nanostructure based on the borrowing SERS activity strategy.

A novel system for 3D microchannel fabrication based on CO2 laser-micromachining is presented. The system consists of a CO2 laser and a 3D precision positioning platform. The design of the CO2 laser and the focusing system is discussed as well as the precision platform system. The CO2 laser focusing system can regulate a laser beam which is of high-energy and of micron dimension in beam diameter. The movement precision of the 3D platform is of micron dimension also. The fabrication of 3D microchannel system in PMMA can be realized by controlling the CO2 laser and the platform. A special ’sacrificial mask’ process was used to produce translucent channels of micron dimensions with low surface roughness using the developed system. The experimental results are presented in this paper.
