Emergency Intramedullary Nailing in Open Leg Fractures: What Results?

Introduction: Leg fractures are the prerogative of violent trauma, which lead to pluritissular lesions, including the opening of the focus, thus worsening the prognosis. The indication of centromedullary nailing (CMN) is subject to time and trained team requirements. The aim of this work is to evaluate the results of CMN in emergency cases of open leg fractures in adults. Patients and Methods: This was a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2018. It concerned adult patients with an open leg fracture treated by CMN in emergency at the Orthopedics-Traumatology Department of the Yalgado Ouedraogo University Hospital. During five years, 91 patients were registered. Their average age was 34.1 years with a sex ratio of 2.2. The average admission time was 1 hour 41 minutes. Cauchoix and Duparc type I open fractures predominated (64.8%). Antibiotic therapy was instituted as soon as the patient arrived. The functional results of osteosynthesis were evaluated according to the Lysholm score after an average follow-up of 48 months. Results: The majority of our patients (51.3%) were operated on between the 6th and 18th hour. After careful trimming of the open fracture, CMN was performed in all our patients. The average hospital stay was six days. The mean Lysholm score was 87.23 ± 11.06 with a satisfactory functional result in 81.3% of cases. Discussion:

Background: This study assessed the effect of a nutrition education intervention. This intervention aimed to improve the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of mothers on food safety in the peri-urban areas of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso. Methods: A total of 243 mothers of children under 5 years in the peri-urban of Bobo-Dioulasso were administered the FAO questionnaire for food safety knowledge, attitudes, and practices assessment during two cross-sectional surveys, before and after the intervention, in j.nuary and October 2017. The intervention included two components consisting of a theoretical phase (counselling and discussion) and cooking demonstrations implemented for ten months. To account for the before-and-after design of the study, the McNemar’s test was used to assess the effect of the intervention on food safety KAP of mothers of children under 5 years. Results: The mean age of mothers was 29 ± 6.2 years and 50.6% of them were between 20 and 29 years old. One for knowledge (cooking thoroughly with, p-value = 0.0001) and another for attitudes (perceived benefits of reheating leftovers before eating them, p-value = 0.0001), significantly increased after the intervention. In terms of food safety practices, all the indicators (cleaning of dirty surfaces, plates and utensils and storage of perishable foods) significantly increased (all p = 0.0001 Conclusion: This study provided some evidence of an effective nutrition education intervention for improving maternal KAP on food safety for their child’s feeding.

A homogeneous DNA assay by recovering inhibited emission of rare earth ions-doped upconversion nanoparticles

Robust and easy-to-use kits specific for a particular DNA sequence are desirable for early detection of diseases. However, the maj.r challenge with these tests is often the background fluorescence artifacts arising from biological species due to employing UV and visible range of light. Here, we have reported a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence "turn-on" kit based on rare earth ions doped nanoparticles, upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), which forms a fluorescence-quencher pair,brought together by a hairpin structure through the formation of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), with quenched upconversion luminescence. In the presence of analytes, the molecular beacon opens to push AuNPs away from UCNPs, with a distance longer than the efficient quenching distance, so that the inhibited upconversion emission will be restored. We demonstrated that this assay provides a homogeneous, facile, simple and highly selective HIV-1 based DNA detection system with restore efficiency up to 85%, and the detection limit of 5 nm.

The aquafeed industry continues to expand in response to the rapidly growing aquaculture ***,the identification of alternative protein sources in aquatic animal diets to replace conventional sources due to cost and sustainability issues remains a maj.r ***,insects have shown tremendous results as potential replacers of fishmeal in *** present study aimed to review the utilization of insects in aquafeeds and their effects on aquatic animals’growth and feed utilization,immune response and disease resistance,and fish flesh quality and *** many insect species have been investigated in aquaculture,the black soldier fly(Hermetia illucens),and the mealworm(Tenebrio molitor)are the most studied and most promising insects to replace fishmeal in ***,insect rearing conditions and biomass processing methods may affect the product’s nutritional composition,digestibility,shelf life and required insect inclusion level by aquatic ***,insect-recommended inclusion levels for aquatic animals vary depending on the insect species used,biomass processing method,and test ***,while an appropriate inclusion level of insects in aquafeed provides several nutritional and health benefits to aquatic animals,more studies are needed to establish optimum requirements levels for different aquaculture species at different stages of development and under different culture systems.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of deaths and hundreds of millions of confirmed infections *** pandemic has prompted researchers to produce medications or vaccines to reduce or stop the progression and spread of this disease.A variety of previously licensed and marketed medications are being tested for the treatment and recurrence of SARS-CoV2,including favipiravir(Avigan).Favipiravir was recognized as an influenza antiviral drug in j.pan in 2014,and has been known to have a potential in vitro activity against SARS-CoV-2,in addition to its broad therapeutic safety *** was recently approved and officially used in many countries *** review provides insights and up-to-date knowledge of the current role of favipiravir in the treatment of COVID-19 infection,focusing on preclinical and ongoing clinical trials,evidence of its efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 in COVID-19,side effects,anti-viral mechanism,and the pharmacokinetic properties of the drug in the treatment of *** to its teratogenic effects,favipiravir cannot be offered to expectant or pregnant *** practical efficacy of such an intervention regimen will depend on its dose,treatment duration,and cost as well as difficulties in application.

Background: This study assessed the effect of a nutrition education intervention aiming to improve the knowledge and practices of under 5 years children’s mothers on infant and young child feeding in peri urban areas of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso. Methods: A total of 243 mothers of children under 5 years in the peri-urban of Bobo-Dioulasso were surveyed before and after the intervention using the FAO questionnaire for infant and young child feeding (IYCF) knowledge and practices assessment in j.nuary and October 2017. The intervention included two components consisting of a theoretical phase (counselling and discussion) and cooking demonstrations implemented for ten months. To account for the before-and-after design of the study, the McNemar’s test was used to assess the effect of the intervention on mothers’ infant and young child feeding knowledge and practices. Results: The mean age of mothers was 29 ± 6.2 years and 50.6% of the mothers were between 20 and 29 years old. All indicators used to assess the mothers’ knowledge of breastfeeding and complementary feeding significantly improved after the intervention (all p-values < 0.05). In terms of child feeding practices, half of the indicators (early breastfeeding initiation, age of complementary feeding initiation, and minimum meal frequency) significantly increased (all p = 0.001) while two indicators (minimum dietary diversity, and minimum acceptable diet) did not change (p = 0.06 and 0.67) after the intervention. Finally, continued breastfeeding, significantly declined after the intervention (73.3% vs 86.0% p = 0.001). Conclusion: The intervention improved the mothers’ knowledge on breastfeeding and complementary feeding and some child feeding practices. This study provided some evidence of an effective nutrition education intervention to increase maternal knowledge and practices.
