A Novel Approach for Sugarcane Yield Prediction Using Landsat Time Series Imagery: A Case Study on Bundaberg Region

Quantifying sugarcane production is critical for a wide range of applications, including crop management and decision making processes such as harvesting, storage, and forward selling. This study explored a novel model for predicting sugarcane yield in Bundaberg region from time series Landsat data. From the freely available Landsat archive, 98 cloud free (j.ly 31st (2001-2015) were sourced for this study. The images were masked using the field boundary layer vector files of each year and the GNDVI was calculated. An analysis of average green normalized difference vegetation index (GNDVI) values from all sugarcane crops grown within the Bundaberg region over the 15 year period identified the beginning of April as the peak growth stage and, therefore, the optimum time for satellite image based yield forecasting. As the GNDVI is an indicator of crop vigor, the model derived maximum GNDVI was regressed against historical sugarcane yield data, which showed a significant correlation with R2 = 0.69 and RMSE = 4.2 t/ha. Results showed that the model derived maximum GNDVI from Landsat imagery would be a feasible and a modest technique to predict sugarcane yield in Bundaberg region.

Background: The determination of prognosis in heart failure (HF) has focused primarily on the identification of potential biological and physiological markers and not on communication. High morbidity and mortality rates suggest that patients require prognostic information to assist in life planning. This study examined the preferences of both patients with HF and cardiologists for prognosis communication in the outpatient clinical setting, with the aim of guiding practitioners in undertaking prognosis conversations. Methods: Using qualitative descriptive techniques informed by a grounded theory approach, 32 patients with HF and 9 cardiologists from outpatient settings in Ontario, Canada were interviewed to identify convergent preferences for prognosis communication. Strategies to enhance methodological rigor were employed. Results: Individualized, context-specific prognosis communication between patients and cardiologists was preferred. Two main themes and ten related attributes were identified to describe convergent preferences;1) Set the Stage for Prognosis Communication, and 2) Map the HF route. Attributes reflected the complex, dynamic, interactive and iterative nature of prognosis communication preferences. Conclusions: Prognosis communication occurs within a complex, adaptive healthcare system. While specific preferences exist, changing contextual elements within and outside of the system create conditions that require cardiologists to adj.st their approach to individual patients. Patients with HF and cardiologists each have preferences that affect their willingness and ability to engage in dyadic HF-specific prognosis communication. Findings have relevance for the implementation of any efforts, including HF guidelines, aimed at improving prognosis communication. Our findings, informed by a complexity science approach, offer an innovative and robust alternative to traditional linear approaches to prognosis communication.

Obj.ctives: Edema in partial-thickness burn wounds can decrease tissue perfusion, increase tissue ischemia, and deepen the burn inj.ry. We report the results of a clinical trial comparing the effectiveness of a hydro-conductive dressing to our standard burn dressing at removing edema fluid from partial-thickness burns and present the proposed mechanisms of action of the hydroconductive dressing. Methods: An internally controlled comparison of two wound dressings was performed on 10 patients with non-contiguous partial-thickness burns. Each patient served as his/her own control. One burn was treated with our standard burn dressing and the other with hydroconductive dressing. Dressings were weighed prior to application, removed at 24 and 48 hours, weighed, and new pre-weighed dressings applied. Weight gain of each dressing at 24 and 48 hours was determined. Statistics were applied using the Student’s paired T-test. The VAS pain scale was measured prior to, during, and after each dressing change. Results: At 24 hours, the hydroconductive dressing had increased 85.6% ± 29.3% in weight compared with 61.3% ± 32.7% for the control (P = 0.053). For the second 24 hour period, the respective numbers were statistically significantly different at 59.7% ± 23.4% vs. 34.2% ± 19.1% (P = 0.038). Averaging the weight gain over the two dressing periods demonstrated that the differences were highly statistically significant as the hydroconductive dressing increased in weight by 71.0% ± 20.3% compared with 44.5% ± 17.4% for the gauze dressing (P = 0.005). VAS scores revealed no statistical differences. Mechanisms of action included capillary, hydroconductive, and electrostatic actions. Conclusions: A hydroconductive dressing designed to draw off excessive wound fluid removes more wound edema fluid than standard burn gauze dressings.

The identification of j.ts originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS *** taggers with high performances in rej.cting j.ts from gluon over j.ts from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the j.t,and the other combines several j.t substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the j.t *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for j.ts with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.
